I hope y'all enjoyed this. This video was experimental in some ways, as I'm trying to walk the line of giving my opinions on train and transport stuff (especially here in Germany), being honest about it, but also not getting bogged down in the seriousness of it all.
Also, I'm thinking of ending future videos by answering a viewer question or two. So if there's anything you'd want to ask to get briefly featured in a video, let me know!

15:04 Regarding the biggest needed change: As a good, bureaucratic German citizen I have to point this out: You‘re pleading to the wrong institution. HVV has no say in terms of frequency or schedule. That’s down to each federal state. Once S5 crosses over into Lower-Saxony LNVG becomes responsible and they simply decided that an hourly service off-peak is good enough. That’s part of the reason why some trains simply terminate in Neugraben: Lowe-Saxony didn’t want to pay for them. Even the length of the trains (which is dictated by the platforms) are down to Lower-Saxony cheapening out on 200 m long trains since it would cost more and they’d need to finance platform extensions. Therefore the federal state of Hamburg swapped S3 and S5 to allow for longer trains on the more heavily used S3 service. German Kirchturmdenken in a nutshell.

Wow… I learned more about Hamburg in this video than I did… ever. S5 service reminds me of how the 5 train in NYC always gets rerouted somewhere and has 3 northbound termini during rush hours (and is also the most unpredictable and unreliable subway line in the trunk line it runs on)

In case you need video ideas: the S1 has a few issues too, especially the west branch between Wedel and Blankenese. There's only a single track and if during peak hours one train coming from HBF is delayed by more than ~20s every train after that (in both directions) will be delayed, too. Once the branch is about 7 minutes behind schedule a train gets cancelled, which leads to the next train being delayed because more people would like to use it and the whole cycle continues.
Also, Iserbrook is the only single track station in the whole network, Blankenese is a terminal station and Sülldorf signal box hasn't been modernized since 1927

As someone who primarily used the S21 and now the S2, I genuinely don't understand why they felt the need to change the numbering to remove the pattern between the single and double digit lines. For whom is this simpler? Newcomers and tourists will have to look at the plans no matter what, and with the old naming scheme there was also at least some clear pattern to learn and use.

I was in there once after i took the RB81 from Rahlstedt and got off at Hasselbrook, i wanted to go to home using the S1 to Ohlsdorf, but surprise... on the display board i somehow saw a train S5 running to Ohlsdorf. I really liked the old system of numbering the lines.
Explination for people who aren't involved in Hamburg's transit: A single digit line stands for lines that go through Jungfernstieg and adding a 1 behind it makes it a line through Dammtor. The first digit indicated which route it took out from the city. It was so simple and offered more direct connections and I wish it is reintroduced without any disadvantages that the new system offers (which is mostly frequency).

You even mentioned Karlsruhe once, your S5 reminds me of our S5. Here, it goes from Wörth Badepark to Pforzheim Hbf, but sometimes only from Knielingen Rheinbergstraße to Söllingen, or sometimes only Berghausen(Baden), and sometimes it's randomly a S5 EXPRESS from Pforzheim to Karlsruhe Albtalbahnhof (which is not on the regular S5 route). Some trains run through onto the S6 line to Bad Wildbad and did I already mention this is both a tram and a train at once :D

    • @GT670DN

Isnt it completely normal for a transit line to have staggered termini? That not every train runs the full route? You have 3 tph (trains per hour) between Wörth Badepark and Knielingen, 1 tph between Germersheim und Knielingen, 6 tph from Knielingen to Berghausen, 4 tph from Berghausen to Söllingen and 2 tph from Söllingen to Pforzheim. 1 tph continues on S6.
I dunno, I have grown up with this system, I find it weird that someone could find it weird :D

Hiyo, I LOVED watching your vid so much! The editing, your humour and delivery (the single ballpit at CCH as a cherry), its all so great!
I'm from Lübeck and actually work/study in this field. The problem with the off peak service is most definitely to blame on politicians in lower saxony. They have not had any ambition whatsoever to improve anything to the south of Hamburg in decades, and that's why S-Bahns and Buses to the South of Hamburg's state borders are so comparatively bad and infrequent.
From the state border on, lower saxony has to pay for service. Hence why lots of buses terminate at the border, or trains at Neugraben. Lower Saxony simply does not deem it important enough to pay for more. That's also why a lot of trans terminate at Elbgaustraße. But with Pinneberg and Poppenbüttel you can see that Schleswig-Holstein cares at least a bit more, so they pay for more service.
I'm subscribed and looking forward to more videos from you!

@@TFTSB I did write a Hausarbeit on the shortcomings and challenges of urban transportation this semester, so the funding situation is one thing I touched on. The main source was an Interview with Thomasz Kusiak from the Verkehrsbehörde in Hamburg. Mrs. Sundman (I believe that's the spelling) of Die Linke's speaker on transport, she was also recommended to me back then. Apart from that Allianz pro Schiene and Pro Bahn probably have publications or explainer on it too. If you want to, we can get into touch and I can send you the Hausarbeit.
Apart from that, the Bundesverkehrsministerium has a site explaining the rough funding process. There's a plethora of news articles on cuts in Schleswig-Holstein now, precisely because our minister said the Bund doesn't give the State enough money to order all the service. If you wanna look at a good example, see the cuts (and then the cut of the cuts) to Pinneberg, or the whole saga of the Bäderbahn-closure or not closure.
Gustav Richards youtube channel has some videos on Metronom and transport to the south of Hamburg - he works for DB, so covers the political and operational side of things. Lower saxonys attitude towards improving things can be most visibly seen on the track to hannover - and their lackluster improvement strategy for it. "Alpha E" would be a thing to search up if you wanna go into that more.
Sorry, that's a whole mouth full 🥴 Hope there was at least something useful in it!

Coming from the northern part I was used to be able to reach both Harburg with the S3, Bergedorf with the S21 and both going over Altona Reeperbahn as well as Sternschanze Route. Now it’s completely messed up and I have to change trains to reach my family in Bergedorf. Also coming from Bergedorf you have to change trains now if you want to reach the north. This is super frustrating, especially for the people with special needs. Berliner Tor doesn’t have any lift from the Sbahn and to change platforms in central station takes so much time you won’t make your connection as planned!

This renumbering was single-handedly the stupidest decision by HVV in recent years. Like many said it removed all logic, why remove a well working pattern that distinguishes the city tunnel and connecting rail.
Furthermore, I’m happy you mentioned the extension! You could actually make a 30min video on the ABSOLUTE GARBAGE of replacement service that currently services thousands of commuters from Hamburg’s north. What was an easy 45min trip to the centre with max 1 transfer is now min 1:10h with frequent delays of 20min or more. Yes we will soon have the SBahn but judging from this video S5 means the mess continues.
The problem rn is that the replacement busses get stuck in traffic bc commuters changed back to taking the car since it’s way faster and at the same time the north has seemingly decided to reconstruct all roads at once.
The replacement services randomly change routes and schedules by the week, never leave at the according time, and sometimes coming from Eidelstedt going to Kaltenkirchen you have to get off the bus at Quickborn and wait to go one stop further to Ellerau and back on the train to then go 2 stops to change again, making this sometimes a 3+ transfer route. Not to mention that in Ulzburg Süd it arrives at the western outer most track that only connects to the eastern outer most track (and on to Kaltenkirchen) by going off the station and back on, crossing the literal tracks twice without any protection and with running train service. With transfer times of 2min this is often times impossible for the elderly or non-locals to work out. So basically if you life in Henstedt Ulzburg and work in Schnelsen or Eidelstedt, you’re f****ed for the next 4 years. Also if you happen to be in Quickborn or Ellerau a logical alternative would be to take the A1 up to Ulzburg Süd and then go into the city centre via the much more frequent U1. While this is the most reliable alternative, the A1 often times misses the A2 by just a few seconds. So going to work you often need to leave 20min early to catch an earlier connection and if you get off work at 6 and have to go up to Ulzburg from the centre you miss the peak service, again often causing transfers of 20min.
I used all these services this summer and was glad that it was only temporary but I had conversations with other commuters everyday about how frustrating this is! Often times it took me 1.5h to get home for a route that in little traffic would take me max 30min by car. Ridiculous! And no regional trains to take off this pressure either…
The worst part however is, that you virtually have nowhere to complain to.. they brush it off since it’s just a few thousand people but trust me in the region north of Hamburg, no one is currently using the trains if they have other means of transportation. Really sad for public transport of Germany’s second biggest city in 2024..

Yes changing plattforms in busy times at the Hamburg Hbf is bothersome (especially if you are like me one of the unfortunate souls frequently arriving at plattform 13 a-c which is especially overcrowded), but to change the S-Bahn line while coming out of Stade doesn't require leaving the plattform at all (unless you want to go back the way you came to the south/east) and isn't even in the main building like the Plattform 1 is where the S-Bahn connections leading back south/east are. To get to Altona you literally just have to step out of the train and wait on the plattform until the right train arrives to get on. Even if you want to change direction to go to the Airport there is a seperate tunnel just for changing to the other S-Bahn plattform.(or to the U1 or U3)

In the U-Bahn System, every line has its own tracks and those are always one per direction. The S-Bahn network, in contrary, has a lot of interlining, sometimes also shares track with regular heavy-rail services and also has a single-track part. Therefore, delays on one train will spread throughout the system.

Great video, very well researched and explained. I agree with most of your points, not with the last one tho.
I mean, your main essance of this video is that we need more frequent commuter services, which I totally agree on. However, I think with the new S5 line, this will be provided. I mean, what is the point of rebranding the Kaltenkirchen branch from AKN to S6 if it still has the same terminus at Eidelstedt?
I.e. my Grandpa lives in Kaltenkirchen and if I want to visit him (I live in Hamburg proper close to the Kellinghusenstraße station), I need 1.5 to 2 hours to get to him, this would be dramatically decreased with the new S5 running through the Hamburg city centre towards Kaltenkirchen.
I also don't think this line is overstreched, most lads and lasses from Stade/Buxtehude/Neugraben or so on would probably get off earlier anyways (in central Hamburg somewhere), and I also think that such commuter trains need to stop at Hamburg main station. I'd rather reroute some underground lines to decrease passenger numbers at the main station instead or re-introduce some tram lines to provide more direct connections between suburbs.
Btw isn't the S6 meant to be extended further towards Kellinghusen?

Parallel zum Autobahntunnel macht iwo Sinn aber du musst einen sehr langen neuen Tunnel bauen (zB vom Tunnel bis Altona) und die Gelder und Baumkapazitäten haben wir nicht. I'm from the other side of Hamburg and I love to complain about the S-Bahn, and the RUclips algorithm knows me all too well so here I am. I'm from near Pinneberg and I used to always take the S3 from Halstenbek to get to Hamburg, but ever since they introduced an express bus line from Pinneberg to the airport, I've always been using that to get to Niendorf Nord and take the U2 from there because you can NEVER rely on the S-Bahn. Every single time I take the S-Bahn to get to some kind of important appointment or to catch a long distance train, there's ALWAYS some complimation. Because I'm now an U-Bahn enjoyer, I have never actually experienced the S5 until this day since I think I've only ever used the S-Bahn once since the network update when I had to go to Harburg. While the new network is probably better for central Hamburg as there won't be as many complications in Altona anymore, it sucks for people coming from outside the town. I was also a big fan of the single and double digit services, but I've actually noticed that many locals were never aware of the system behind it, so that might explain why they changed it. The old network map was certainly tough to read for outsiders with multiple services having the same colour, and S2 and S11 not even being marked properly because they were peak hours only. It definitely makes sense to run so many trains to Neugraben because of how busy the Hauptbahnhof - Harburg stretch is, but it's certainly silly to create the "new" S6 service instead of just running more S5 trains. It's also really silly to get rid of the Citytunnel connection so you HAVE to change trains. I like the AKN a lot, but extending S-Bahn services to Kaltenkirchen is certainly better for the people up there because of the annoying change at Eidelstedt (And it's certainly better than the rail replacement service that's been going on for way too long now). By the way, them adding and removing another set of 3 cars to trains also happens on the S3 at Elbgaustraße, or at least it used to on the old network, I'm not sure if they still do that. There's also an additional S-Bahn platform at Pinneberg because some S21 trains used to terminate there ages ago, but it's also fallen out use long ago and it's really sad to look at. Any way, long story short, you've earned yourself a sub and my condolences for having to rely on the S5. I keep seeing tweets from S-Bahn Hamburg every day that trains only run between Stade and Neugraben or not at all. Hopefully they'll fix some of their issues soon, but I fear with the extension to Kaltenkirchen you'll get even more delays and complications. Fun!

Thank you so much! I wish our S-Bahn network was as strong as the U-bahn network - even if the U4 feels very WIP still

    • @TyllToons
      @TyllToons 3 месяца назад +1

@@TFTSB The U4 is so dope but it's also such a huge letdown considering how long it took them to build two stations and then another one, and how long it is taking them to build the Horner Geest extension (which just got delayed by another year). The new stations are certainly the coolest on the network, but right now the line's kind of a joke that's only there to take pressure of the U2. It will be really cool to see when it eventually reaches Wilhelmsburg and Harburg... at some point before the heat death of the universe. Also I do not understand why the U4 does that huge 180 degrees turn from Jungfernstieg to Überseequartier without calling anywhere, and they should have built a stop near the Elbphilharmonie. They built a whole new U-Bahn line to serve the HafenCity, but you still have to use the U3 to get to the HafenCity's biggest attraction from Baumwall. I get why some people say it's a huge waste of tax money.

That leaves a lot of capacity issues. Starting off with everything behind Blankenese on the S1. Most of the railway is 1 train track only between Wedel and Blk. I have not seen the need to have this many trains go between Altona and hbf as of now.
Generally the more trains you add to this system the more delays you will have. Your approach is exactly what we tried to do the past decades. No major new lines just some rebranding and restructuring while just trying to fill to the maximum capacity. Most trains that want to go from Harburg to Hbf will wait behind Hammerbrook on the bridge because it's so congested. The solution to Hamburg's S Bahn problem is quite complicated one and huge investments and new builds will be necessary. Some speak of making a huge new Bahnhof Out of Berliner Tor to take stress away from HBF. Now the Verbindungsbahnentlastungstunnel is in the conception to make a huge new tunnel to relieve the congested of the Regionalbahn on Dammtor but that is so much money pulverised for nothing. But hey ho who knows what life will bring us. Imo Hamburg should decentralise completely with new citycenters just like Altona is and Harburg is trying to be. Make one around Wandsbek too and don't let everything funnel through the overcrowded Hbf

The bypass „problem“ of the S5 will mostly be solved after Diebsteich is turned into the new Altona Station in a few years. This will be a major upgrade for connecting S Trains and Regional Trains, who can run through the Station instead of going out of the Altona Station backwards. What do you think about i?

    • @TFTSB
      @TFTSB  Месяц назад

The new Altona station will still be a ways away from what will then be called "Altona Mitte", currently Altona. In addition, as all trains crossing south or east out of Hamburg will still have no way to bypass Hauptbahnhof, this is the rail infrastructure equivalent of a bandaid on an open wound
