I like many others replaced the Oil Sensor Switch on my 2012 Ford F150 XLT 5.0 4x4 because at an idle I would get the dreaded LOW OIL PRESSURE warning. Didn't fix the issue! I stumbled across another video that talked about the THROTTLE BODY. Followed that advice by removing the Throttle Body and giving a major cleaning! Now, NO issues and after 3 months now, not 1 Low Pressure warning message. Try it, can't hurt, and will make a huge difference in the idle. Fixed my issue, hope it fixed yours!
I had the oil light come on and my gauge was constantly dropping. I changed my sending unit on a Monday night, no problems so I thought it was fixed. As soon as I started my truck Tuesday morning, the light came on and the gauge dropped again. I remembered you talking about cleaning the throttle body so I tried it. So far I haven’t had a problem and it has been 1 week now! Thanks for the tip on the throttle body!
Can you add a reference for the 3.7l 2wd? Your video was extremely thorough, thank you for the visual. I'm concerned from another video referencing aftermarket sending units being a no go, is this going to damage the engine to drive to a mechanic, as long as fluid level is good and oil is in good condition?
Thank you! So frustrating! Several mechanics, even the better dealership in town have all been flummoxed. And I spent $450 getting the oil pressure switch replaced. No luck. If this is somewhat common, one would think the $200/hr guys at the dealership would have had a clue??
I appreciate the video (especially the tip about the alternator). I almost considered coming in from the top on my 5.0, but decided to follow your video. I think this is probably the best way to do it. You have all the access you need once the alternator is out of the way. I was able to get it done in about 45 min - 1 hour start to finish.
Thanks! I agree that it’s best to give yourself the most space so you can actually see what you’re doing. Plus, the way I show here is technically the correct way.
Excellent explanation! This is precisely the problem I'm having with my 2017 F-150. The warning comes up on the screen mostly when I've just stopped at a light. My truck is 2-wheel drive, so I hope it's not too difficult to replace the sensor. Thanks for posting a good video. My only wish is that you would do another video on a 2-wheel-drive F-150 with specific instructions on how and where to find the sensor. It's not at all obvious, but at least now I can look for a sensor that's cover with leaking oil.
Since your truck is 2-wheel drive, you can get to the sensor on the bottom without having to remove the alternator, which will make the job a lot easier. If the issue persists, try cleaning the throttle body because a low idle can create this issue also. Good luck!
I enjoyed your video. I used the bolt on the alternator like you showed at the end when I first loosened the bolt i tapped it with a hammer. I didn't have to struggle to get the alternator off. Great overall video and very helpful. Thank you for posting it.
Very good video and very informative. Also looked into the comments and good thing i did. Yes my 2012 F-150 also shows low oil pressure and thought it was just the oil pressure sensor but now others r saying indicator comes on at idle. Just like mine. So now clean the throttle body and c how that goes. Thank u all for the helpful info
Thanks a lot Jack. Your video allowed me to successfully remove and replace the oil pressure sensor on my truck today. I'm very grateful, thanks again!
I changed mine and went through the top. Took two bolts out of the coolant reservoir/air box and eased it over towards the intake manifold and let it rest there without unhooking any radiator hoses. Then I removed the cable off the alternator and that allowed enough room to get a socket and flex head ratchet on the switch. Took about a half hour.
Exactly whats been going on with my truck, just after an oil change. Level is good, maybe a touch on the full side. Doesn't come on all the time but when it does it's on/off, on/off repeatedly. I'll take a look but I think I'm getting to old to do this myself unfortunately. Thanks for the detailed video though.
You can reach the oil pressure switch from the top of a 4x4. I did it in my 2011 5.0 4x4. Took 30 mins. Had to take out some stuff on top to reach it but not too bad. Still hard to reach but not impossible.
Great Video Thank you so much for your time and all the information!!! I have this problem with my Truck. Now I have to take it to the shop to getting fix...
Did you use OEM sensor? If so, what was the part number? My brother in law has the low oil pressure light coming on also, when it does, engine automatically goes to idle, will not move until he switches the truck off, and restarts engine. Only happens when he comes to a stop, like a stop sign, or stop light. He had it to do that twice in one day. Next day worked just fine. I think he has a switch going bad.
Just got it finished doing from underneath with truck on ramps. Awesome lifesaver here. Only way in my opinion to do this. Doing relearn process now to speed process up. Went out and ran a bunch of lights for an hour with some highway. Now onto “service advanctrack”.
I replaced the pressure sensor. $20 part and about 3 hours of my own labor. Mostly it took longer because it’s hard to access with 4 wheel drive and I needed a couple of tools I didn’t have handy. Problem gone for three years now.
So you said if the low oil pressure light turns on either the switch is bad or there’s actually low pressure and the engine won’t run if that’s the case? Is it possible for the truck to actually have low oil pressure and be drivable
Keep in mind the wire from the sensor to the PCM can be broken or a connection can be loose. If the wire breaks (or is loose and making poor contact) the PCM will think there is no oil pressure. If there was intermittently -no- oil pressure, the truck at very least would be throwing codes for Variable valve timing, which requires oil pressure to function. Just my opinion I am not a ford tech.
But did it fix the problem. I have had the replaced the oil pressure replaced and connector cleaned, oil was fine but I went ahead and had a full oil and ford motor craft filter changed, and still does the same, when slowing down or at stop the warning and dinging goes off, drives me nuts..
Well, I cleaned the MAF sensor, cleaned the connections at the sensor, replaced the sensor with a Motorcraft version, and I still get the dreaded low oil pressure notice. Bummer. Nice tip on getting the alternator back in, by using that long bolt and hammer! Update: It actually worked! 2 weeks now, and no more oil pressure warning.
Awesome Video, even a novice can follow your instructions. If it warning light comes on at stops and speeds under 5mph and I shift into either neutral or park the warning goes away and the pressure gauge returns to midpoint. Where would you look next? This only happens after driving at least 10-15 miles first. Warning light never comes on at 10mph+
Nice video bro 👍 👌 not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but keep in mind this can be a wiring problem also! I have a customer truck right now that just had an OEM sensor put in by another shop with no change in symptom. Haven't tested circuit integrity yet, but the wiring looks terrible and i am suspecting that's gonna be yhe issue. Unfortunate that the customer has to pay twice for the problem to be fixed!
How about no light, but a random knock at hot idle that goes away with any amount of throttle blips. Sometimes not there, other times knock no knock. Oil pressure bleed off from timing tensioners is my best guess. 200k OG timing set. Pretty sure, bought at 184k. I want to do this first though. Could this video be my solution?
It would have been even a better idea to tap it back after he loosened the bolt a couple of turns when taking it out. It wouldn't have been such a struggle to remove the alternator. 😉
Great video i just did my oil pressure sensor and the connector both were bad and broken on my 2011 5.0 but now when i start it up the oil guage stays down until a few minutes that i start driving it would you know what went wrong or what to check didnt do it pryor to changing sensor any info and help is greatly appreciated
Go to your local Ford dealership and buy a Motorcraft sensor from the parts department. I hate to say it, but the issue is probably because you used an aftermarket sensor. Install a Motorcraft sensor and you should be good. Think about it: the problem didn’t start until you did the job. I see issues all the time at the shop with aftermarket sensors, even with brands that are supposed to be reputable.
Change the plug also! if you have done this before, My sending unit plug was bad, I couldn't tell it was until I pulled out and metered it. I was getting intermitant ohm readings as I moved the wire.
Hey ma I have a 2010harley 150 we’ll she would start shut down , they changed the fuel pump then it wasn’t that then they said the hole timing chain kit wasn’t that changed a brand new oil pump wasn’t that she starts and runs then her alarm comes on and she wants to stop and the low oil pressure and the gauge drops the needle help eny ideas ?
Old thread but you need to move the fuel pump fuse to the new location, Ford has a kit, and Amazon sells one too. Pull the fuse to the pump and if it looks burnt your in need of the fuse relocation kit.
Hey Jack, I see a lot of videos about this model and year having issues with the low pressure alarm coming on at an idle, but I had a different issue. I was 315 miles into a 350 mile trip, cruising in a traffic slowdown when I lost all oil pressure, couldn't accelerate. I pulled over and made sure I didn't spring a leak. Next I checked the fuse that goes to the oil pump and relay. Once I popped it out and back in again, the truck was able to start up and get me the rest of the way with no issue. Does this sound like it could still be the same sensor, or could I be looking at a computer issue? Thanks
This is happening with my 2011 f150. How much will this cost me to get fixed? I have 4wheel drive. So it sounds like it’s going to be more of a pain to fix.
Hi, so my truck it’d been having this issue. The low oil pressure would show up while driving. The last time it did it, I brought the truck to a stop and turned it off now it won’t turn on. What do you think it is? Could is be the low oil pressure, I’ve checked the oil and it’s got oil.
I’ve never seen this issue cause a no start situation. Is it the same truck as the one in the video? Also does the engine crank over like it’s trying to start or when you turn the key it does nothing at all?
I've had the oil pressure sensor replaced twice now. It did not solve the problem entirely but it doesn't happen as often as it used to. It was never an real issue because the truck never actually died on me. I took my truck to get the speed sensor recall taken care off because my truck started acting up. As soon as I picked it up I noticed there was something really wrong this time around, all they did was to reprogram the computer. Now my truck takes a good minute to go into 1st gear and while it does or if I'm up-hill or at a light. The low oil pressure warning light comes on, the rom goes to zero and the truck dies on me. I had to turn the truck off and on. And keep my foot on the pedal. Do you think it could be the actual oil pressure pump ? I replaced the sensor this morning and it died on me going up my drive way. I did noticed it was a bit low on oil, like a quart. Sorry for the long message 😅
You just saw how to do it. Get the new sensor and replace it. You need to get the timing belt out and alternator out. Good to go Approximately 3hours of job.
The book time is slightly over 2 hours (2.1) (for 4x4 models with the 5.0). That’s probably about how long it took me because I was filming but it can be done faster.
I only get mine when trying to go wot. Then it makes truck drop oil and flash the engine light. Can’t seem to find the issue but I get P066D truck runs great and has great idle so idk
hey man , i got a 2014 f150 5.0 4x4, i get the same warning light with the oil pressure gauge dropping from time to time, but my truck shuts off by itself sometimes when im at a stop sign and get the warning. is that normal or do you think its something more serious? because when it turns off i just turn it back on and it runs just like nothing happened? any idea of what's wrong?
my 2011 f150 5.0 112,000 miles did the same thing with the oil pressure warning, today it did it and shut off, now it won't stay running, when you start it it runs fine for a few seconds then says low oil pressure and shuts off, oil is full any ideas?
nice Video. I had mine changed and several months later the same thing happened again. I took it to my mechanic. He check the oil pressure mechanically and said when the light comes on that the oil pressure does not drop. It's an electrically problem. He said the part is not bad. I admit all of this sound fishy but I had this exact same problem with my 2002. I drove my 2002 for years and years with that message (actually no message the oil gauge would drop to zero) Never threw a code. And everything was fine. The point of my comment is this. The repair he made sometimes will fix the warning light and sometimes it reappears after a short while. I am looking for a way to silence the warning light. I know I know but it is extremely annoying and paying $300 to have a new oil sensor installed only to have this problem come back in a few months is not the answer either. If anyone knows how to silence the warning light please let me know.
@jackhfletcher I found it, it was right behind the alternator as well about to head to orielys and change that part out hopefully this does the trick I've already changed out the throttle body and the purge valve thinking that was the issue fingers crossed
Is there any reason why my engine starts knocking when the message comes up. When it starts to knock I turn it off and crank back up and it runs like new after
So I have 2014 with 5.0 and same warning message , oil message was first, then cht warning and code w/limp mode no a/c replaced cht sensor and truck went back to oil pressure gauge dropping and message but actually died at a stop, replaced oil sensor and maf then relearned idle same code sent to ford they replaced the same sensor and plastic plug then said it was fixed drove it home and it was not fixed after returning it to the dealer and 1700 for injector cleaning and throttle body +retune now they are quoting a new engine. Won’t know the motors tired but I have to see the live data of oil pressure dropping to believe it the truck drives amazing I picked it up from the dealer then picked up my kid gauge dropped once in reverse but truck seems normal
Definitely not. Most likely, that 2010 has the 5.4 engine and they are known for engine issues. If you can somehow prove that it’s an oil pressure switch and nothing more, then great. But otherwise I would pass.
It’s most likely just a bad sensor which would mean it’s ok to drive because the oil pressure is good but the sensor is lying. But if the sensor is good and the oil pressure is truly 0 then it’s not safe because the engine will grenade itself after a very short time.
Getting this message on my 2013 F150 4 x 4. Change the oil pressure sensor did not work. Change the throttle body that did not work. Plenty of oil in the vehicle. Got to be some other problem!
I learned an amazing thing! I switched to 5W30 full synthetic and I never got that alert again! 5W20 full synthetic is too thin!!! 5W20 full synthetic is much thinner than the recommended 5W20 blend or regular. 5W20 full synthetic will cause all kinds of issues in your 5.0!!!
Knock that sleeve back on the bottom alt. bolt before you remove it by loosening the bolt a couple of turns and smack it with a hammer. The alt. will slip right out. 😉
Took it to a grauge where they charged 130 to put a new oill send that I bought. They said they will buy an auto lite sensor, not use mine. Good to go. But not fixed. Took it back and asked what the oil pressure was. They didn't cheak it and told be a few days. So took to a truck shop and they said a bad engine. So after 5 motor installs, they got a good one $13,000. Ask them for old oil sender. It was not new and not an auto lite. I thought the engine was idleing to slow as when the light came on. But nether of the shop's agree. I still wonder. moter was quiet.
“Rip off” That’s a pretty bold accusation. In your previous comment, you mentioned that your truck is a 3.5 EcoBoost. The one in the video is a 5.0. Different engine, different procedure. The factory repair procedure states to remove the alternator on the 4x4 5.0 models and the book time labor is 2.2 hours according to Mitchell ProDemand. On the EcoBoost models, the procedure states to remove the switch from the top (no alternator removal). I’ve read a couple comment from others with the 5.0 who said they were able to remove the switch from on top after fighting it for a while. But the way I’m showing in the video is the correct way according to factory procedure.
2014 ford f150 4x4 echo boost. YOU DO NOT a have to take the alternator off so stop lying. You can do it from on top takes about 45-1Hr. All I had to do was take off my air filter box and water box off and take the wire off the alternator all from up top.
At 3:26 in the video I specifically state that on the EcoBoost models, you can reach the switch from on top. Before calling me a liar, maybe you should rewatch the video to jog your memory as to what I actually said.
One hell of a how to video. Excellent camera work and very thorough with everything. Outstanding. Thank you!

You must have had a low idle before. If the engine isn’t spinning fast enough, then neither is the oil pump. I’m glad you got it fixed!
I had the oil light come on and my gauge was constantly dropping. I changed my sending unit on a Monday night, no problems so I thought it was fixed. Yep, Air Filter and coolant reservoir and you have access. 2012 5.0

You took and put that belt on so easy. Thank for the video
Thank you for the detailed information. My 2014 KR started low pressure warning at idle. Took me 2hrs and $46 for the OEM part. Keep it up!

I had the “Service AdvanceTrack” warning on my 2012 and it was due to a leaking vacuum line that was easy to reach, near the coolant reservoir.
I replaced the pressure sensor. $20 part and about 3 hours of my own labor. Mostly it took longer because it’s hard to access with 4 wheel drive and I needed a couple of tools I didn’t have handy. Problem gone for three years now.
@@jefflundberg8068 excellent tip thanks. I have not thought of that possibility. Been dragging my feet a bit on issue with life’s other curveballs.

Jusy got a 2018 with the 5.0 and this problem started just 2 hours after taking it home. Thanks
I was able to replace it from the top without removing the alternator on my 2011 4x4 5.0. It was a PITA but it took maybe 30 minutes.
What was your method for reaching it and replacing it?
Didn’t remove the alternator on my 2011 6.2L f150 thanks for the video
Does the oil pressure switch change the operation of the engine

Depending on area 200-400
What kind of tools you used sir
Tapping the threaded insert is a great tip!
It would have been even a better idea to tap it back after he loosened the bolt a couple of turns when taking it out. It wouldn't have been such a struggle to remove the alternator. 😉
Hi Jack, Why not put your social link in description?
Good video! Very patient with your work. Experience for sure.
Common problem with the 5.0 I'll get to tackle this tomorrow. Yay me
From a few ppl saying the easiest way to get to it without removing the alternator is removing the air box and going from the top
Could this be done with front on ramps?
What if you already replaced the switch and that is still coming when driving
Same here
Have you seen a full limp mode with complete power loss, to accompany the low oil warning?
Yes, I have.

You don't have to take off the alternator you can take the coolant and air box off and you reach it.

Did you know what the problem was?
@@bohannon5175 no. The dealership people just called to tell me they can't reproduce the problem. To them, it shifts fine
Should oil be drained before doing this on my 2011 5.0? Or is it above where oil gathers?
No need to drain oil. You’ll loose some oil when you remove the switch, but draining the oil won’t make a difference.
@@jackhfletcher okay, thank you!
You never explained if you sprayed the inside.Where you screwed in as well with breaking or is it just a connector
I always spray a little bit inside the threaded hole but it’s not really necessary.
Great DIY video. Thanks Bud!
No problem!
great video! one of the best i've seen. thanks!
Thanks for watching!
My truck is doing the same thing. How much this job runs???
You just saw how to do it. Get the new sensor and replace it. You need to get the timing belt out and alternator out. Good to go
Approximately 3hours of job.
@@learnlkh1You mean the serpentine belt... this truck doesn't have a timing belt...
How long did the job take? Looking at how much it should cost me man hours and part
The book time is slightly over 2 hours (2.1) (for 4x4 models with the 5.0). That’s probably about how long it took me because I was filming but it can be done faster.
My son changed his and now it's leaking. Is it possible it's a bad part? Is there a way to Crack the piece it goes into? We can't figure it out
I only get mine when trying to go wot. Then it makes truck drop oil and flash the engine light. Can’t seem to find the issue but I get P066D truck runs great and has great idle so idk
Excellent presentation...very helpful. Thank you
Mine kept turning off then the message of low pressure came on I changed the negative wire on the battery going to body grounding and fixed my issue
hey man , i got a 2014 f150 5.0 4x4, i get the same warning light with the oil pressure gauge dropping from time to time, but my truck shuts off by itself sometimes when im at a stop sign and get the warning. is that normal or do you think its something more serious? because when it turns off i just turn it back on and it runs just like nothing happened? any idea of what's wrong?
Mine does the same thing did you ever figure yours out
Did you have to drain the oil first?
No. You’ll lose a little bit of oil when you remove the switch but you don’t have to drain the oil.
my 2011 f150 5.0 112,000 miles did the same thing with the oil pressure warning, today it did it and shut off, now it won't stay running, when you start it it runs fine for a few seconds then says low oil pressure and shuts off, oil is full any ideas?
That was very informative because I have that issue
Where is this oil pressure sensor at on a 2012 f150 3.7 2wd
It’s in a similar location. It’s located on the oil filter adaptor.
@jackhfletcher I found it, it was right behind the alternator as well about to head to orielys and change that part out hopefully this does the trick I've already changed out the throttle body and the purge valve thinking that was the issue fingers crossed
What if you drive without an oil pressure?
I replaced my oil pressure sensor motorcraft ford part, but still show low oil pressure 08/17/2024..
Anyupdates
This is the way to make a great video!
Thank you!
Thanks, excellent. Hope I can pull that off.
Is there any reason why my engine starts knocking when the message comes up. When it starts to knock I turn it off and crank back up and it runs like new after
Not a mechanic, but I think you actually lost oil pressure.
@@griz2166yeah sounds like it
More than helpful thank you
So I have 2014 with 5.0 and same warning message , oil message was first, then cht warning and code w/limp mode no a/c replaced cht sensor and truck went back to oil pressure gauge dropping and message but actually died at a stop, replaced oil sensor and maf then relearned idle same code sent to ford they replaced the same sensor and plastic plug then said it was fixed drove it home and it was not fixed after returning it to the dealer and 1700 for injector cleaning and throttle body +retune now they are quoting a new engine. Won’t know the motors tired but I have to see the live data of oil pressure dropping to believe it the truck drives amazing I picked it up from the dealer then picked up my kid gauge dropped once in reverse but truck seems normal
I'm thinking about buying a 2010 f150 with 260,000 miles on it with oil pressure issues, risk it or not?
Definitely not. Most likely, that 2010 has the 5.4 engine and they are known for engine issues. If you can somehow prove that it’s an oil pressure switch and nothing more, then great. But otherwise I would pass.
@@jackhfletcher what about a 2014? would it also cause transmission to not shift right? 195k miles
Is it safe to drive with psi shows 0?
It’s most likely just a bad sensor which would mean it’s ok to drive because the oil pressure is good but the sensor is lying. But if the sensor is good and the oil pressure is truly 0 then it’s not safe because the engine will grenade itself after a very short time.
This great i got part see if it works tomorrow 😶
Great job bud
Thank u. I got a 2012 doing it
Having the same problem on my 2011 ford f-150.
Getting this message on my 2013 F150 4 x 4. Change the oil pressure sensor did not work. Change the throttle body that did not work. Plenty of oil in the vehicle. Got to be some other problem!
Did you get it fixed? If so what was it?
@@lifeson8362lmk
Did u
I learned an amazing thing! I switched to 5W30 full synthetic and I never got that alert again! 5W20 full synthetic is too thin!!! 5W20 full synthetic is much thinner than the recommended 5W20 blend or regular. 5W20 full synthetic will cause all kinds of issues in your 5.0!!!
@@jeffl.dillard8681how’s it running after running with 5W-30?
Knock that sleeve back on the bottom alt. bolt before you remove it by loosening the bolt a couple of turns and smack it with a hammer. The alt. will slip right out. 😉
Good job i
😊😊
Rate 1 to 10. Guess this was about 5 scores pain in the butts job. Number 10 is changing a whole engine bay or whatever need to lift engine out.
At the end of the day? Bad oil causes all kinds of issues.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hey how did Jiffy Lube mess ur truck up? lol
It didn't help I can even see what direction
What a rip-off that is. A little part like that.
What does the guy do to put a million miles on his truck ??
Wrong video lol. But he sells fertilizer and drives all over the country to meet clients.
@@jackhfletcher appreciate it !
😂😂😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Good
I can fix it without a video. Buy a Dodge, Toyota, or a Chevy
Engine swap!
Wow. What a rip off. You did all that work and charged the customer ton of money for about an hr job from on TOP.
Way to be a douchebag.
Did you have to drain the oil first?
No need to drain oil. You’ll loose some oil when you remove the switch, but draining the oil won’t make a difference.
