- I believe the Genie Company might be trying to fool us. They have introduced two wall mount garage door motors. They claim they are different but after comparing them both it seems they are the same. Yet before you go out and buy one of them, you might want to see this video first. Because at the end of the day you don't want to be fooled.

I don't believe the voltage claim. All the marketing still says 24v. The parts diagram lists the same motor for the entire line of wall mounted openers. The replacement circuit board (part# 41181R.S) is compatible with all models as well. Still pretty strongly suspecting identical product, except the warranty as you pointed out.
After having a bad experience with a Menards Masterforce unit which is effectively the same controller as the Chamberlain and Liftmaster products I looked into Genie. My concerns are of a more practical type. Genie does have a more creative and possible more reliable way of detecting a stuck door in close mode than the slack detecting switch and roller arm the others have. The wireless feature is fine except you have to deal with the battery issue so there is no light on the button to find it in the dark. The big problem with all of these is that they rely on the door effectively FALLING down to close itself. If you have a door that is supposed to stay open once manually raised this is a big problem. These units cannot push the door down so if it wants to stay up, up it will stay. You have to loosen the springs and sometimes set the upper limit so that its on its way down with weight on the cable to begin with. This makes it impossible to raise the door manually because the springs arent helping you as much anymore and closing it can be dangerous because there is little to hold it back. I think these things are problematic and potentially dangerous. If you are going to have a wall mount unit the cable system has to be completely redesigned to provide bi-directional force. Maybe roller chain would be a better choice instead of trying to repurpose an inappropriate outdated cable system.
I had the same problem going on their website. That is probably the reason I haven’t bought it yet is because it is confusing as to what is the best model to order. I’ll have to call them to get the details.
You have to look at the plate on the motor itself. Too often the packaging is not consistent with the contents. But I take your point.
Thank you for this!! Awesome channel!!!
Well I’m a little confused now, which one would you say is superior?
Hello! They both offer the same performance. The 6170 will just offer a better warranty.
So I need an opener for a stand alone garage. Doesn’t look like I have enough clearance to put in a standard opener, so I’m looking at a wall mount. Noise isn’t an issue, but it must have a battery backup because this garage does not have any other doors. Which model do you recommend?
This is not a new marketing gimmick, it's been used for decades by other companies as well. Usually the other companies rebrand (different brand name) the higher priced version. For instance, Chamberlain conventional garage door openers versus Lift Master. Identical mechanically and electrically, the Lift Master comes with a one piece center rail and the Chamberlain comes with a two piece rail so it fits in the box in your local store. It was a scheme also used in automobiles for many decades. Same component parts, same engines and transmissions, built on the same assembly line, but the one with the luxury brand name was priced much higher. The subterfuge was even extended to the replacement parts; the exact same starter for instance cost much less at the Chevy dealership than it did at the Cadillac dealership. So no, this isn't a new scheme or scam.
So due to a freak accident involving wind and the e-release cable, I had my 6172h-b warrantied out, they sent me a 6170h and at first I was frustrated after all that just to get something different. But, despite the fact they are the "same" I can see the 70 is a little faster, I also have a 72 right next to the 70 on another door and there's a visible power difference. I'll have to do an amp draw test cause now I'm curious about the validity of the power ratings
Something you should probably add into this video is it if you buy a retail purchase genie opener they will not allow a dealer to warranty or get parts for that opener. You have to take it down box it up in the original packaging and send it back. I’m dealing with one for a customer right now and they will not fix it. You have to take it back to the retail store.
Excellent suggestions. I will include it in the update video.
Great video, thank you for the information. Can you provide more information about what you meant by “prone to short”. I have dedicated plugs for my two Genie Wall mount door openers but the circuit breaker is not continually throwing on these plugs. Thanks again.
Thank you for your feedback!
I've noticed that on Genie garage door openers across their product line or more susceptible to electrical surges or short circuits. If you have a dedicated plug for a wall mount garage door opener with a 20 amp breaker that should provide sufficient protection against damaging the circuit board.
@@sosgds thanks for reply. Can you clarify why you say on the video that people shouldn't use an extension cord with these motors? Most overhead plugs are in the middle of the garage door ceiling (to accommodate older style openers). It's a dedicated outlet in the sense that nothing else is plugged into it, so I can't see why running a short extension cord (say 6 to 8 feet) to get power closer to the door location would make it any more susceptible to shorts than if the outlet was relocated within 6 feet of the Genie opener. I don't want to have to get an electrician to move the dedicated outlets if I don't need to.
I have a 6170H-B. My garage door had some slowing down issues and at one point we couldn’t open the garage so I had to pull the red emergency cord. Now I’m not too sure how to fix it. Do you have any recommendation? Does that corn have to be set back in the place or something?
Hello. I would check the power to your outlet first. If the motor is running, it's possible it's running off the battery backup. If your outlet is good, then check your garage door balance. It could be that your spring needs to be adjusted or replaced.
Any experience with installing either of these Genie lifts onto a Wayne Dalton torque master spring. Using genie's adapter
Hello. Great question. I have yet to find a customer that is willing to move forward with the adapter. That's one of my very next videos once I get the experience and video footage. I hope one of my colleagues takes on the challenge.
Good video I agree seems shady business practice.
Hey Shane! We won't be fooled my friend!
Great video! Would you happen to know if there is a speed adjustment to either of these to increase or decrease the speed the door will move?
This is an excellent question. Unfortunately the only speed adjustment on the 6170 is the drum setting. If you set it for over a 4" drum it slows the opener down a little, but not much. There is no adjustment to increase the speed.
@@sosgdsThanks Santiago!
Hello Mr. Party Person…I appreciate your videos. Because of your recommendation, I went with the B6172H, self installed and no issues. A week later it goes up about 12 inches and stops. I troubleshooted the error message and pulled plug, reset up and down limits etc and still getting the error of the long led red flashing. Door and spring are only 2 yrs old….any help would be appreciated!!
Hello! Thank you for the support to the channel. Did you install the circular LED light fixture and the battery backup?
Yes. All work fine. I did not install the electronic lock
So what brand do you recommend for wall mount thanks for videos
Hello. As a contractor and installer I prefer the Genie.
Warranties are built into the price during product definition. It is how the parts are funded. It is not uncommon to have identical products have different prices due to the warranty.
Did you examine the motor part numbers for each?
Hello. Sad to report the part numbers are the same.
The site lists the difference is one doesn’t have Wi-Fi connectivity. There are four models. Two of each with or without battery backup
how much would you charge to install this?
Is the 6072 the same motor? Minus the Wi-Fi?
It sounds to me that the difference comes down to the warranty. That's how hot water heaters work - they install the same tank, then if you pay the extra $100-$200, they will slap a different sticker on the same tank. How much is the price difference?
This is also the case for this garage door motor. Originally, the 6172 retail wall mount was to be 18V motor. Yet they are exactly the same motors. The price difference between the two motors will vary from retailer to retailer. Yet on Amazon the 6172 can be found for $200 cheaper.
I am thinking of getting a genie wall mount opener but the closest plug point is about 12ft away can I use a 12 gauge extension chord and plug it?
Hello. Genie does offers a power extension kit for wall mount motors only.
Model: GAPK-P
Part#: 41194R
@@sosgds I couldn’t find it on genie website other sites it saying $300+
Can you share me the link ? Appreciate your help
@@shashikumaarb This is only place online that offers it. It's a bit pricey. www.movingupgaragedoors.com/genie-gapk-p-wall-mount-power-extension-kit-41194r?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4bipBhCyARIsAFsieCyYUsT1q_bnTnQ7G0cPylWQ0YfJ2NUu8wVJVeE3jVldkXvUWHrPr68aAopuEALw_wcB
Im reading multiple reviews from people who installed the 6172 that it has a plastic sprocket inside that seems very prone to bracking rather soon acter install. Is anyone else experiencing this? Does the 6170 also have a plastic sprocket?
Hello. That's a great question. Yes it is true, Genie did have an issue with the plastic sprocket. Yet that was an older design. The new design the sprocket is beefier. In the 4 years I have installed the 6170 opener, I have only had one gear go bad. Hope that helps.
I only have about 7 inches of space from tension rod and wall (both sides)Is there any wall mount that will work for me? Trying to avoid center mount.
Hello. Unfortunately I don't think there is a wall motor that fits smaller than a 8" of space to the door.
@@sosgds thanks for the quick reply. Sad sad news for me.
@kdawggie, I have exactly the same issue (i.e., barely 7" of clearance on two of my three garage doors). The product details on Amazon and the Genie website indicate that the 6172H unit is 6.8" wide and requires only 7" of side to side clearance to install. The 6070 seems to also have the same dimensions and clearance requirements
alil off subject, what garage door insulation do u like,
Thank you for the question. It depends on the circumstances but polyurethane insulation will offer a quality experience.
I just got a 6172 . Does it Humm while on standby ?
Hello. No ... It's the transformer in the motor. Take video of it and reach out to customer service. They can advise if it's faulty.
@@sosgds thank you
What do you think a good price is to install this?
Great question. The Genie 6170 opener is commonly installed from $1000 on up.
Looking to install 2 6172s. Going to have a 3 car garage so one for my 2 car and one for my 1 car. Can both be plugged in to one wall outlet or would you recommend having their own dedicated wall outlet. Hoping to mount them next to each other
Great question. You could use one outlet. It's rare both motors will be used at the same time. But for added peace of mind a dedicated circuit is the best way to go.
@@sosgds thank you. In the process of building a new home so I'll let the electrician know to have dedicated outlets.
How about the 6172H-0 is it different?
Hello Chevy. No it's the same, just with the option of a Battery Backup. But the "H" designation does mean it has a 6 foot long power cord.
Thanks for the info
Are these compatible with Google Assistant?
Yes it does!
Did you measure the voltage
Hello. Not in this video. But in an upcoming video I do have something planned.
So the chamberlain has a lifetime warranty on the motor while the Genie has 15 years. Seems indicative of the motor on the Chamberlain having better build quality and materials.
Hello. That's a solid supposition. Yet neither motor has had the benefit of time to come to that conclusion. I can say that since LiftMaster's introduction of the 3800; their 1st Gen wall mount motor, they have had more time to perfect their design and user experience. But as a dealer contractor I do prefer the Genie motor. It's just a preference.
bro my pull down wont engage after pulling it down, motor feels like its working
Hello. I have a bad feeling the gear is broken inside.
I dont understand why openers are only for doors up to a certain size. Doesnt the spring make the door basically weightless after its wound?
Hello. There is still a good amount of weight to a garage door even with well balance springs. The truth is, these motors were not design to lift very heavy doors. They work like tug boats. They the gravity of the door in order to open or close. Thus anything wider than a 16 by 14 tall door would require a commercial grade motor.
Im not going to be combative so ill just say thank you for the reply.
@@bus-fun-addict meanwhile I'm here just trying to figure out what exactly even there is to be combative about OP's answer to your query. Can't figure that one out. LOL
If you read my question and the op's answer you may see that the point (effective weightlessness regardless of door size) was not recognized or addressed. I did not want to press because the question may beyond the scope of posters knowledge. I hope i have cleared up any confusion you may have been experiencing.
I’ve been in this industry for several years and when I’ve asked the same question I hear the same answer parroted back. Tbh I don’t know why genie says it can only lift doors up to x lbs bc like u said, if a door is well balanced, it makes no difference to the motor. I guess I’m just saying it’s a mystery we may never solve lol
I dont think there selling the 6170 anymore
I believe you are correct. I can only find them thru my dealer rep.
Things are moving towards Diy it just is what it is. Look at Ring they almost completely cut out home security mom and pop shops due to the ease of install. The company will make more $ selling 100,000 directly to consumers then discounting 5000 units to you its the hard truth its not a disservice
Yes, And It's clear these corporations are only focused on their distribution. That's just how things work. But we have been able to survive and manage despite these challenges. Thanks for your feedback!
It’s just a mistake on their site. To verify you could test the voltage it actually uses.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Genie not only specs the same 24v BBU for all wall mount openers, they show the same circuit board and motor assembly part numbers for all wall mount units on their site.
You can't have a video stating they are the same yet say "practically" the same. Not the same thing
Valid point. Aside from nerves and the fear of sounding redundant I tried to convey that some still might find minor aesthetic differences. Never the less these motors perform the same.
just wait till your door comes down on anything that stops one side for a second or two and your cable jumps off the sprocket causing your door to jam up.
It's a common problem on all motors, overhead and wall mount alike.
No thank you.
Thank you Sam! Always love hearing from you! Stay safe out there!
genie openers are junk, go with chamberlain instead
2 local garage installers keep telling me not to get the genie and go with chamberlain/liftmaster 🥲. I want the genie though
go with the professional installer advise. Genies are garbage.
@@Fedup10710 I have the genie been great so far
Get the genie. Pros and cons for both when it comes to overhead openers but for sidemount, genie is the clear winner by a mile… unless u want to troubleshoot ur liftmaster opener every month lol
@Gary Giel deleted his comment 😅
@Roberto Gonzalez that's what I got I had a humming issues at first but it was my house electrical needing a ground. And it's been great since I got it . Open and close it daily .
