- After we were treated to arguably the greatest weekend in the history of the sport, we’re delighted to be joined on the podcast today by ex All Blacks Captain Tana Umaga, a current World Champion in ex Springbok Francois Louw & ex Welsh International Philippa Tuttiett.
We discuss everything from the; All Blacks epic victory against the Irish to how the Springboks managed to shock the home nation in their capital, and arguably most surprisingly how the Puma’s managed to fight back to knock out the Welsh. Tana opens up about why he feels embarrassed by the way people have treated Ian Foster, how he helped forge Bundee Aki’s career, why he decided to change the All Blacks Haka in 2005 and what his relationship with Brian O’Driscoll is like after that famous incident in that Lions series.
Francois takes us behind the scenes to reveal; how Rassie meticulously plans for scenarios and outcomes better than anyone in world rugby, the secrets a team needs to know to win a World Cup and how the Springboks managed to put a game plan together against the French which saw them come out on top.
Plus Philippa reveals to us why everything seemingly went wrong for the Welsh on the weekend, why she felt that the Irish’s luck was running out and how England could still have a great chance at going onto win the World Cup.
This is your definitive review & preview of all of the World Cup action, so sit back, relax and enjoy the Official Rugby World Cup Podcast, presented by Asahi Super Dry. #BeyondExpected,

Mad love & respect for Tana Umaga - from Bok fan.

The translation for this comment is hilarious

Do you remeber the days when Wellington Hurricanes pitched at Loftus, Jerry Collins, Tana, Lomu and Cullen....FFS!!! they were just a treat to watch.
I'm not an AB fan, but I'm a big Tana Umaga fan. What a legend
do not remember Tana ever getting injured
@@stuarth43Tana injured a few… especially a certain Irishman 😢

@@camwells9726 On to the final for us! chooowhoo
It is always striking to me how much better the players get along with each other than the fans evidently do. Fans can learn a lot from these humble warriors.
you can never dismiss the All-Blacks, as they are most assuredly the upper most echelon of Rugby class acts, as well as the SpringBoks, i really hope both teams go thru and we have another N.Z vs S.A final.....
What a privilege watching and listening to Flow and Tana
My thoughts exactly
Two of my favs!
I love the meme going around saying the biggest mistake France did was giving Eben Etzebeth a 10 minute breather!
I thought it as it happened!
Plus the half time break...😂
Yes! He came back and bulldozed over them! 💪🇿🇦🏉
Love Flow's humility. He talks about how other players come and change the game in the last 10. "Was never my game." Mate, your 74th turnover vs Wales to get the match-winning penalty in that '19 semi-final was very much your game....🙂
He cant tell the truth about what is happening on the pitch so he has to say nice things, but if you keep having to push fictions all the time they start to scale up more than the PR people want.
I had the same thought
Tana was one of the most unbelievable centres ever. What a legend. Love from SA
Tana & Flo absolute legends
What a man Great man Tana!! From a South African supporter 👍👍
Boks and AB's winning reminds me of that great José Mourinho quote - *_This is_* -football- *_rugby heritage!_*
Interesting ppl still predicting an AB defeat. This is when this team is most dangerous. When they are favorites they find it tougher.
@@Wildlife_SA. Fiji vs Portugal... only fools differed. Japan vs South Africa the fools won.
Philippa holding is down nicely. Some quality insight from her perspective and a good sense of humor. Love it.
Nice to see the legends Umaga and Francois representing. Eben's nickname we call him Elizabert but some call him the return of Bakkies the enforcer.
Hello! Rule #1!! You are not allowed to speak out of the house!! You obviously want to get killed?!
Elizabedi
@@athigrootboom3974hahahaha after that video that is the only nickname for him!
Sharks supporter here, hitchhiking outside newlands after a stormers/sharks game with a mate, both wearing sharks jerseys. Dozens of cars drive by hooting and chirping us. Robbie Fleck pulls up with his missus in the front and gives us a lift. My ignorant opinion of fleck did a complete 180 that day. Legend!
Rugby is genuinely a special sport. The mutual respect and coming together of players (both men and women now, which is brilliant) through the love of the game and its values is just the best.
Tana Umaga! one of the greats for NZ for sure
Tana is my fav AB, amazing player.
What’s AB. I’m new to rugby

Awesome podcast!!! Thanks to all! It’s absolutely amazing to hear the stories that this beautiful game has given to the players that literally have to go into combat every single weekend for our pleasure of watching them!
May the best teams win this weekend!
Tana and Flo, absolute legends in this game.
Tana Umaga and Ma'a Nonu...hands down my two favorite ABs of all time. (Though I concede that Richie and Dan are probably the best of all time, I favour Tana and Ma'a over them.)
In fact, Ma'a and Duane are my favorite rugby players of all time, (as in dead even, I couldn't choose between the two) ...and I'm a Saffa.

Seeing Tana's dread locks bouncing through the center of the pitch was a highlight of my childhood
@@sports2hedz542 It was a nightmare from my childhood. I guess that's true for anyone who is not a Kiwi 😂
Lets not forget the great Jerry Collins
looked like The Predator.
In 2019, SA defeated the host nation, Japan, in the RWC in the quarter final
2023, SA defeated the host nation, France, in the quarter final
only 2 host nations have won as well south Africa and new Zealand
2027 South Africa to defeat Australia in the QF.
@@mitchellnganeko7534looking at the crystal ball aren't we😅
@@mitchellnganeko7534haha as sublime as that would be😂🔥 I hope we don't play Australia in the QF in 2027, it lowkey sucks being the ones to break the heart of the host nation. I feel terrible for France they 100% deserved to go to the final. As a side note I feel terrible for the Irish as well. But if it comes to it in 2027, then we shall beat Australia indeed😂💔
And................
Tana aah world class, so many incredible early Saturday morning childhood memories Tana&Ma’a in midfield for the Hurricanes… Francois aah brother thank you for never giving up, made the right call took the opportunity abroad and the dream came back, you were game changer on the field, and a true gentleman off the field!!!!
What an absolute scholar and a gentleman Gethan Jones is, him and big Jim have taken what the players have done on the field, off the field. What a pleasure to experience such intellect, fairness and understanding of the game and able to share it without bias.
Remember when we played NZ growing up...every time i saw tana i was like....geez we have to cope with this guy again😢😅😂. Love him😂
Great to see FLO. Tana was my favourite AB growing up.
Great Video with absolute Legends of the Game.. 🔥👌🇿🇦 Eben is Terminator, he keeps coming back 💪
Gethin Jones is a great host and this was an excellent panel. Really interesting to hear more details of the evolution of the Haka
EBEN'S NICKNAME:
A tik-tok doing it's rounds in S.A. - a young rugby enthusiast points to the tv encouraging the Boks. Next minute, Eben gets the ball and bulldozes his way past several French players, scores a magnificent try!! The young boy jumps up and down and shouts: "Elizabedi, Elizabedi, Elizabedi" clearly elated because Eben Etsebeth scored a try. I would say his nickname is ELIZABEDI !! 😂❤🇿🇦🏉
So cool to hear about the Haka....thanks for the video.
Tana....simply GREAT...from a South Africa.
Fabulous segment - great mix of guest choice. Well done indeed!
Francois and Tana are two cool cats 😎❄️
Phillipa is great! She needs more air-time and more platforms! I could listen to her all-day, love her energy enthusiasm and engagement man!
Actually, this hole crew in this episode works just so well together, make em a permanent feature, please!
Amazing info about the haka
That's some trivia to pull out at the pub 🥃👌
Tana, as eloquent off the field as he was deadly on the field. Respect From a Bok fan.
Tana Umaga what a legend 😊
You have to appreciate that beautiful view👍👌
The genuine respect that each team has for the other is amazing - easy to see why rugby is the greatest game in the world.
Tana Umaga was a great centre……Jacque Fourie had the same type of mind…..created the spaces for others
I think the heading "Stunned the World" means the Northern Hemisphere countries who were blowing the Irish and French trumpets so loudly. It has gone to the ABs and Boks but it could easily have gone to Ireland and France way, it was amazingly close. Interestingly a nation from different continents going to the semi finals.
Same old same old. Terrible pool selection as NZ-IRL and SA-FRA should have been semis, not quarters.
I really hope Francois’s son chooses SA over England one day.
On a different note, Francois Louw, what gentleman and proud Springbok ambassador (despite unfortunately living in Bath 😊)
So, we had 14 peeps for 10 minutes, and France only scored 3 points during that time. Simply brilliant. France had their chance, they botched it. Well done Bokke!
Tana Umaga speaks with such eloquence, well done very insightful.
49.11 - 51.53 - Louw so down to earth - classy guy
Great program, with awesome insights. Go Bokke!
Superb & very enriching rugby podcast! Thank you legends!
Great to see Tana🇿🇦 he terrorised us.
Taga Umaga, fan's remember watched this league✌️❤✌️
This world cup the best I've witteneced congratulations to France for that congrats to the teams still in the hunt, it has to be south Africa v new zealand final game that's a true 50/50
Can SA and NZ build themselves up again after two massive games? Do they even have to to get past and England and Arg? Are we in for a shock or two?
Stop the petrol sniffing, one of these days you will wake up with brain damage
I’m 🇿🇦, my dad was a massive All black fan, and he loved Tana ❤
Great chat with two legends of the game! I've always been a massive fan of Umaga and Flo was just a game-changer!
France and Ireland rushed themselves forward without any tactical idea. France gave away some the easiest counter attacks this world cup and ireland couldn´t handle high kicks. They were simply tactically outclassed.
Yo, I had no idea François Louw sounded like that. He's got the voice for animal documentaries
Lekker chat!! Super coach couches, thanx for sharing insights and inspiration, fun to listen thanx guys!! 😅
Tana has a future as a commentator. Good stuff
Things you never see in a test match, place kick charge-downs and calling a scrum on a mark in the 22. (Scrum penalty awarded - the kick to touch however brilliantly saved from over the line!)
the key moment in SA -France game was Kolbe running the conversion down....
That headline "How Springboks & All Blacks Stunned the Rugby World" how did they stun the world? We are talking about the 2 teams that have combined won the cup the overwhelming majority of championships. How was it a stun? Considering neither of their opponents have ever won it.
Whoever wins between S.A &N.Z will be deserving. They're truly the best. S.African🇿🇦
Very well spoken lady.. I can listen to her voice all day.
Four adults with diverse allegiances spoke for an hour with respect and insight. Would that could be said of more politicians.
Love Tana, what a Champion Player he was. One of the best to do it.
It should be an interesting final between the Boks and the AB's.
Really great pod, gents. Thank you.
What I hate about French supporters and some players is that they totally disregard South Africa’s performance. They are totally fixed on how they are entitled to winning that game that they didn’t look at all the technical details and facts. It’s all these talking points about being cheated that aren’t proven true.
I love Francois Louw's reference to traps. I keep waiting for Argentina to put in a really good effort in this world cup that i know they have in them. Now it's hoping they don't trip us up.
Flo-Lo - the top-most jackler of his era!
Rugby is the winner all the way, great to see the legends so easy with each other and always putting the game first, no other game comes close.
Flouw for James Bond, looking good 😂
I don't think there have been that many upsets. European media just felt Ireland and France DESERVED it... it would be an upset for New Zealand and South Africa not to be in the semi's
Did the "European media" win a test series in New Zealand a year ago, or was that the Irish national rugby team? The world rankings are based on results, not media.
All 4 matches were very close between France, Ireland, NZ and SA in this World Cup. Unless you're unreasonably biased, it's hard to act like there was only 1 realistic outcome to each QF.
No one DESERVES to win. Winning a test series in NZ doesn't mean you deserve to win the World Cup. @@andrasszabo1570
World rugby needs to shift away from the North... They win nothing and have created far to many problems within the sport. After how France recieved it's bid to host, the state of reffing and the collapse of the North once again come WC it's time for a change of guard, IRB included
Agree ... the way they stick doggedly to their 6 nations format is a bane on world rugby, I think the new WXV world womens comp with promotion and relegation thru 3 divisions is much more inclusive and lifts the standards of all teams ...
"A high tide, lifts all of the boats"
There should be a governing body for both,South and North, that only run their own Hemisphere, sick of World rugby, all ancient old private school dinosaurs
Tana looks like he could still be called up to the bench! (Playing SA in the final they might need him!😀) 🇿🇦🇳🇿 for the final! Can’t wait - mouth watering prospect!
TANA my All Black Legend! As a South African Ib loved to watch Tana and Cullen play !!
Tana your speaking terms were on point.
We lost in 99. I think that was a reality check on us to define correction and we as NewZealand worked on our mistakes than go from there.
TANA!! What a legend!! If you looking up the definition for the word "best", pick up the dictionary and look under "TANA" 😂 KIA ORA!
Tana is the man! He brings up a great point at 26:38
Tana Umaga!!! This guy was great 👑.
You asked the question “what is it that makes a difference?” - AN ARDENT DESIRE TO WIN!
Focus.
That pod was great to listen to, great job!
Great guests great presenters excellent channel
just remembered why TANA is my hero ! (speaking as an English fan !!!
Francois jou yster, respect!
Tana and Nonu. Try going through that midfield. And not only that, they were skillful too. Nice to see Flo. Go Boks
Stephen Donald said that Sam Kane tackles to hurt you. In my experience, the taller the timber the higher he runs. A real big target you can't miss. You're only interested in 6 stone rather than 18. Diaphragm up. Tackling is about changing minds. Chris Masoe was good at it. He wasn't alone. AB's need to bring this aspect of their tradition back. The secret is to keep your eyes open during the entire contact. Watch the other guy close his eyes. He's in get knocked out territory now. I watched Eben close his eyes before, during and after a contact recently. However, nearly everyone does.
Agree same princable as don't take your eye of the ball
Kia ora koutou katoa, Hello everyone... the calibre of talented players gathered together on this podcast is testament to amazing advancement of modern technology. Social Media Platforms such as RUclips have definitely added another feature utilised that reaches a far greater audience in every country around the world. An opportunity for others to experience the other "beautiful game" on the planet called Union.
Malo Tana, o a mai oe? He mihi mahana, he mihi aroha ki a koe, me nga kiwi katoa, kei reira i te whenua o nga tangata wi wi "Blessings and Love to you and all the other kiwis in France". I remember the first time you lead the Haka as captain, great job by the way. With all due respect to the legacy of the AB's, I've always been uncomfortable about performing the Haka in another country UNLESS, our hosts request it of us (humble) however, in Aotearoa NZ, on the land is definitely a must do. I also believe that the captain (no matter what nationality) must ALWAYS lead the Haka "Kapa o Pango" in my humble opinion, it's more appropriate to our identity in Aotearoa NZ. Noho ora mai ra (take care, farewell)... NZ to win by 20 and SA to win by 14
Stunned the Rugby World? Stunned the Northern Hemisphere, maybe. In the South we never doubted our ability.
Always love Tana.
Tana Umaga. What a Legend!
France beat NZ, NZ beat Ireland, Ireland beat S.A, S.A beat France😂
Thoughts to ponder.🤔🇿🇦🇳🇿
I expected Ireland and France to win…..they didn’t so gives me hope as an Englishman 😊
It has been an amazing world cup
Yep, they evened the score for each other. ABs my faves after the Boks.
With All Repsect Wales, they were in very low place , but huge achievement to get to Qtrs..
I'm gonna miss this podcast. Good work RWC 👌
First time I’ve heard of the origins of Kapa o Pango- Tana was All Black captain at the time and from this insight, he was clearly leading the charge to add the additional haka and it’s interesting that the younger players didn’t really get on board for nearly a year. I remember that 2005 test vs the Boks in Dunedin though. Epic test match & Tri-Nations decider, back & forth all night until the All Blacks finally won right at the end.
Very good boys 🤗
I am going to veer off topic a little bit here. While we all agree that we had some fantastic games between Fra vs RSA, NZL vs IRE, Eng vs Fiji and Arg vs Wal, I was most impressed by the officiating in the Wal vs Arg game. That substitute referee for me was tops, as was the TMO. Brilliant all round officiating. Very few incidents flew under the radar. What that does is, it ensures effective application of the laws of the game. We can discuss the merits afterwards, but not the application. In all the other matches there were a number of decisions (both sides) where you felt, even as a neutral, that the officiating could have been better. In that game I battled to find that. Truly exceptional.
This was very entertaining, the content this WC has been great
Flo and Tana = Legends.
Awesome show. Thanks
We believe. Kia rite, kia rite, kia mau. Get ready, get ready, take it.
Good to see Tana Umaga...
Tana! What a guy. SA love.
