How is it that a country (South Africa) whose Rugby Team is annually ranked in the TOP 3 in the WORLD, merit the Term 'UNDERDOG'??? The Springboks lost ONE GAME in the 2023 Tournament (a game they were 3 meters from winning at the final whistle!) - they beat France, New Zealand and, England by a combined total of 5(?) points in 3 classic games. THAT is not the achievement of an UNDERDOG but a DEFENDING WORLD CUP CHAMPION!!! The Springboks are setting the standard, not coming from nowhere like some unknown quantity. Seriously dude!
Alright, let's keep it simple about the Springboks' underdog story for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. 1. **Favorites vs. Springboks**: Coming into the 2023 World Cup, teams like Ireland, New Zealand, and France were the hot favorites. They had shown solid performance and consistency, leading many to believe they'd outshine others. The Springboks? They were seen as the experienced team but not necessarily the top pick to win it all. 2. **Springboks' Stats**: Despite being the previous champs, the Boks' journey to the 2023 World Cup wasn't all smooth sailing. They faced tough competition and had some losses, like to Ireland, which kind of added to their underdog status. But they also showed their strength, like when they made a massive statement by defeating the All Blacks with a significant margin and scoring big in other games prior 3. **The Underdog Label**: In sports, 'underdog' is sometimes about more than rankings. It's about the current form, the competition, and how a team is expected to perform. For the Springboks, their initial losses and the strength of other teams played into this narrative. So, , even a team as strong as the Springboks can be seen as underdogs when they're up against teams that are showing exceptional form. It's all part of the drama and unpredictability , and remember our kicking problems before the world cup 🤦🏿
Hmmm... yeah, still tho, definitely not underdogs. An England, Aus or Scot I'd have considered underdogs. With the exception of one demolition in NZ, there wasnt a single game in that 4 year cylce where we lost that we couldn't have just as easily won. I don't think the Springboks are ever considered favourites, which suits us just fine, for a couple of reasons: 1. Firstly we have learnt how to peak at just the right times which doesn't always look pretty in matches leading up to the RWC. 2. In general people don't like the Springboks because we have such a passion and drive to win that most other teams cannot combat it for the length that they need. 3. It is a strange thing, how they are always written off, even though they have consistently (except for a few years here and there) ranked very highly in terms of the ranking system.
Honestly a try-saving tackle is sometimes more satisfactory than a try. And while you are at it check how many times the engraving on the William Web Ellis trophy mentions tries scored compared to how many times the champion team is mentioned... Chuckle chuckle chuckle and a 4th chuckle😜 Edit: And while we are at it. Compared to their opponents in the last 3 games The Springboks scored 1 more try than the French (4 vs 3), one more than the English (1 vs 0) and 1 less than the All Blacks (0 vs 1) in their pool they also went evens with Ireland (1vs1) and scored 2 vs 0 against Scotland. In my humble opinion that is not too shabby for a team that "cant score tries"
The reason why South Africa keeps on winning the World Cup is because this other rugby national teams keeps on perceiving South Africa as the underdogs and South Africa keeps on winning NO other rugby national team has 4 World Cup
Tbh it's a round robin tournament played every 4 years, preparation and good luck wins World cups.A team that dominates between WC is the true world champion not a month long tournament winner
The scary thing is the Boks can still get better and better never settling always moving forward because the nation has their back........and forwards😉. We got the cake ready for our boys
The all-time, major question asked by Jacques Nienaber: "what will be required to get out of your poop". That is the secret of Springbok success. (captions enabled)
The Springboks won against all the odds, especially the haters like the NZ press - and especially Kirwin. I see he wasn't even on the 'Sky Sport' post WC rugby tv show, probably still eating his words.

Nick Mallets got a big jaw! He has never won us a world cup. I remember once , he dropped Gary Teichman from the team and made other bad decisions and it made us lose.
True. Mallet cost SA the 1999 RWC by firstly dropping the captain (Teichman) right before the start of the tournament, secondly by not selecting the electrifying Breyton Paulse for the semi-final against Australia, and thirdly by being so naive to employ the same tactics used against England in the quarter-final against Australia in the semi-final.
@@averagerugger9713isn't Nick Mallet a Bishops guy, his father was principal there for like 50 years.. Where's the Rhodesia connection, and I thought Teichman was from Natal
@@JaemanEdwards They scored four tries against France. More than the ABs when they lost to France. The Boks have lots of guys who can score tries. @@leoncolwin8645 2023 RWC Springboks 27 tries All Blacks 49 tries That's 22 more tries. A ridiculous amount more. Against France you scored by feeding off mistakes which is your ugly rugby philosophy. Creating tries is very hard for the Springboks.

I always have a laugh when i hear NZ and other teams criticising our style of play, when their style of play is enough to lose. Stop judging our style, play your own game and devise a way to beat us, we'd love to see the results. We scored more tries than the all blacks 5 - 1, france 4 - 3, england 1 - 0, ireland 1 - 1, scotland 2 - 0, if these other nations are so good at moving the ball and playing a better style of rugby then why don't they stop talking smack and start beating us with tries and final scores and world cup wins.
I so enjoy those 'whine' podcasts by expert All Black sommeliers Wilson and Kirwan. Imagine teams not wanting to play All Black's style of rugby. It is so boring for All Blacks when they can't dominate and win.
I still agree with rassie that the video was justified. That was one of the most disgustingly unfairly refereed games i have ever had the displeasure to watch
last time i checked that doenst carry over to the next world cup lol but for context sake heading to this worldcup the boks were no the favorites world rugby had annointed they top 3 which france ,Ireland and New Zealand we were that dark horese that nobody wanted to see win hence underdog
@@averagerugger9713 So your perceived belief that nobody wanted South Africa to win it made them underdogs. What a moronic argument. For heavens sake South Africa beat New Zealand 35-7 in August but hey 'we're underdogs and New Zealand one of the favourites'. Are South Africans actually taught how to be victims at school? Anybody with an ounce of rugby intelligence knew the winners would come from either South Africa, New Zealand, France and Ireland and that's how it went. Very little between the 4 teams
It’s not exactly Australia or New Zealand’s fault that our governments managed coronavirus properly. Every country had issues. Dramatising that South Africa were only ones who played less rugby during that time is ridiculous. Yes SA won RWC 2023…could they repeat that performance 5 times and win every game? Time will tell over next few years as theoretically SA should dominate and win every test if they are true champions.
Not true, the margins at the top are way too close, depends on the day, home or away, the ref, the flights...there are many influences on who wins for the top 10 teams, any of such teams can win on a certain day. Many of the Boks are about to retire too... ❤ Springboks 🇿🇦, but also realistic, NZ, England, France, Argentina, Ireland, Wales, Australia, Scotland, Fiji are all excellent & formidable on their day.
@@johandevilliers4471 All Blacks have held the #1 spot 80% of the time. They have won 10 of 16 Tri-Nations tournaments; six of seven Rugby Championships; and retained the Bledisloe Cup for 17 years. A further four have ended in a draw. Will be great to see South Africa achieve this as would be an impressive feat and take these titles as well since they are RWChamps
South Africa also did NOT compete in the 1987 & 1991 RWC competitions due to being barred as part of the Sports Embargo against SA, so chances are the Springboks would have won at least one of those too.

I came here to have a chuckle at the sour grapes. I was not disappointed 😊
🤣🤣🤣 go bokke !!!
Honestly, the sour grapes should be coming from South Africa with a team who can't score tries.
Honestly a try-saving tackle is sometimes more satisfactory than a try. And while you are at it check how many times the engraving on the William Web Ellis trophy mentions tries scored compared to how many times the champion team is mentioned... Chuckle chuckle chuckle and a 4th chuckle😜
Edit: And while we are at it.

Gary coached us at the academy for years and would never say why his Rhodesian buddy dropped him

@@JaemanEdwards They scored four tries against France. More than the ABs when they lost to France. The Boks have lots of guys who can score tries.

Make that work.en a specialist
As if the All Black's and Australia were unbeaten after they won the World Cup...
@@johandevilliers4471 All Blacks have held the #1 spot 80% of the time. They have won 10 of 16 Tri-Nations tournaments; six of seven Rugby Championships; and retained the Bledisloe Cup for 17 years.
New Zealand and South Africa have faced each other in test matches 105 times since 1921. New Zealand have won 62 of these test matches, but South Africa have won 39.
South Africa could have long dominated World rugby, had it not been it's past racist laws. The mix they have now is a sign of the good things to come. Watch this space.
How are they underdogs
But they also showed their strength, like when they made a massive statement by defeating the All Blacks with a significant margin and scoring big in other games prior
