Watching this with 20/20 hindsight. Yes, it was a huge gamble. I hoped that the 7-1 bench split was something that we would use as a mind game. When I saw that Jacques was actually playing it IN THE FINAL, I have to admit that I was slightly worried. The saving grace though, is that we have a bona fide sevens star in Kwagga Smith on the bench and he would be able to do a decent - if not spectacular - job of covering the midfield in case of an injury. So I guess that kind of makes it a 6.5/1.5 split. Then there are a few other things to mention. The hosts did talk about South Africa's hard route to the final (through Ireland, France, England only to meet New Zealand) but also remember that we had a major blow when we lost Lukhanyo Am before the World Cup and then when we lost a game breaker in Marx. To top it all off, we had a misfiring flyhalf in Manie Libbok. Thinking back on all of these points, its a miracle that South Africa even made it to the final. Nienaber sure did take an almighty gamble but strong men makes bold decisions and you don't get much bolder than that bench call.

Interesting discussion, thank you. Like all risk management, one cannot just look at the outcome of one match and state it was the "right" decision or not. One of the risks mentioned in the video (one of the 2 hookers being replaced with a good goal kicker early in tournament) did eventuate when the only hooker (Mbonambi) got injured by an AB forward early in the final. That affected the Springboks' lineouts badly, of course. That risk (replacing hooker with goal kicker) had to be made of course, the potential benefit was bigger than the risk.

This was the most competitive World Cup and they deserve the win, the number 1 status and free drinks tonight. That’s for sure. I’m happy with that outcome. All Blacks ultimately played better overall but the the boks hung on and we didn’t get the rub of the green with Barnes calls. I put $2,000 on the bokkies to win in 2019 and won $18,000 (which is why I put $18,000 on the table for the all blacks to win in night) I thought the boks held on but I think this is a game the all blacks lost. Discipline and a few missed kicks. Flip of a coin. My winning record for picking games drops to 88%. I’m happy with that. Big loss and now I’ve got half the money I had before in my TAB account. No regrets though. I’ll stick to the numbers system I have. The boks definitely defied the odds here and truly dug deep. I did make a tiny bit back as I put $100 on Jordan, Jordie, Telea and Beauden Barrett to score a try (Beauden scored) Du Toit was exceptional. He was a sniper on defence. Definitely the man of the match. Kwagga was powerful too. Faf was brilliant. Cheslin was brilliant. Eben was huge. I’ll bite my tongue with speaking of a certain English man’s impact on the game as we can talk about those things for four years and now is time to celebrate for the rainbow nation. What a game. I really enjoyed that one. The boks backline really stood up. With the red card and two yellows, I did think we outplayed the boks to hang on, yet it is certainly not a hard thing for me to celebrate that win. What it means for the country is huge and as I said before, the boks are my second favourite team. The hope and boost of positivity is something I am thrilled with for the peoples of South Africa and I joy in that impact which is more than this game. I actually had to stop myself from cheering when Siya came back on after his yellow card. I love that guy and his journey of recovery is a miracle. He is the spiritual leader of the boks. This one was a hard loss that we had in our hands to take. My heart was happy with that win though. I know it doesn’t make sense but some understand it. why is nobody talking about how a 5-3 split means you have a lock and two loose forwards putting in an 80min shift. The intensity of those positions over an 80min period means a 6-2 split is far more desirable. South Africa has adopted the 7-1 split because it suits us tactically and because we have the depth to do it. If other teams had South Africa's depth they may consider trying it.
Suig SA se peel boys. Back to back baby. I’ve been watching these guys since the start of the WC all of you guys hate SA and honestly you’re the fuel to the fire that won us this tournament. See you in 4 years. Cheers
Rob said that South Africa would win, You must have missed all the praise he heaped on your team. Us Irish love the South Africans. Well done from Munster Ireland 🍀.
I wasn't worried for a minute about the 7-1split. Rassie's picks for the Boks squad were mostly utility players. Infact, Rassie went as far back as grade school & high school in that respect. Absolutely brilliant!
We've got bragging rights for the next 4 years but guaranteed some fans from some national teams will be saying the usual " Boks don't deserve to be WC Champions", " Boks play boring Rugby" and so on. Ag, nevermind. ✌💚💛🇿🇦
I think you should take everything Matt says with a pinch of salt. Looking at his track record as coach he is no position to criticize and comment on selections and decisions made by any of the coaches of the top 4 ranked teams.
Matt with a massive smile hoping an SA player was going to get injured with the 7-1 split. Bongi goes down and a 38 year old Flanker for 78mins pulls off a miracle. It must be hurting Matt now.
IMO the division between northern and southern hemispheres, isn't the division to understand if you want to win the RWC. There are cultures that believe in producing teams that play for a greater good and cultures that are broadly skeptical about a single unifying narrative. Cup rugby interestingly seems to reward the former consistently.
Love it or hate it, the 7 - 1 was genius in the final, won us the game didn't it. Matt, you are such a sed person, maybe retirement is best for you. ( Rob Karney and Shane, what gentleman ) bravo to you.
Thank you Ireland for not picking Jean Klein. Thank you aall Blacks for a hell of a game. Thank you Wayne Barnes for tough but fair refereeing. To Matt, forwads win matches, bacjsxdecide by how much. That saying comes from New Zealand. Rugby union has 8 forwards out of 15 players. Untill you can produce a competitive pack you will not manage the war of attrition that is world cup rugby. Trying to eliminate forwards from rugby union is a fools errand. You are no where near qualified to pronounce for those who love and understand the game what it should be and shoukd not be.
7-1 split isn’t really a 7-1 split. It’s more like 5-2 when you consider the fact that Kwanga Skith is traditionally a 7’s player. He can slot into centre and act that role to at least a 70% level. It’s risky but he can play there. Willie can play all positions in the back, not all as good as #15 but he can handle that too. Our danger would only be at #10 with the kicking.
Bringing in Faf over Reinach was no big deal (as Jacque has said there is overall not really a lot of difference between the players and Faf had RWC final experience and SA wasn't going to go for a running game so Reinach's pace was not so important). Libbok was questionable with his kicking and gave away 12 points against Ireland and was poor in the opening stage against England. Pollard is accurate with kicking to the post and had RWC final experience and demonstrated nerves of steel, so an easy call. It's amazing that so many pundits were concerned about what this would do to Libbok - maybe secretly they wanted SA to lose! Bongi went out after 2 minutes so he didn't play a full 80 minutes as the panel said he would have to. South Africa was missing a lot of key players: Bongi, Marx, Mapimpi and Am. Combined, this represents loads of experience. With Bongi injured after 2 minutes, it means in effect that SA's bench was reduced from a 7:1 split to a 6:1 split.
Spat on us from start to finish, winning this WC makes it so much sweeter. ❤🇿🇦

I’m happy with that outcome.
All Blacks ultimately played better overall but the the boks hung on and we didn’t get the rub of the green with Barnes calls.
I put $2,000 on the bokkies to win in 2019 and won $18,000 (which is why I put $18,000 on the table for the all blacks to win in night)
I thought the boks held on but I think this is a game the all blacks lost.
I did make a tiny bit back as I put $100 on Jordan, Jordie, Telea and Beauden Barrett to score a try (Beauden scored)
Du Toit was exceptional.
Go the bokkies 🇿🇦 🍻 🇳🇿
Enjoy the next few years. Hopefully we meet again in 4 years. What a game. Wow. So grateful to even be having this chat.
Cheers 🍻
Rob you are a genuine purist! Calling a spade a spade. Hope to see you commenting or coaching 👍🏻
Thanks Matt Williams for your views. BOKKE!
The funniest thing you can do is listen to a coach with a 17% win record "educate" a coaching duo who has won 2 world cups between them. Matt williams was a terrible coach and an even worse pundit.
Daarsy. Williams is such a wit kant
😂😂😂😂
MATTY MY BOY yes we were fatigued BUT you forgot one thing mate we were also BATTLE HARDNED and that is what counted in the end 😂😂😂😂😂😂.
Viva BOKKIE four times WORLD CHAMPS.
why is nobody talking about how a 5-3 split means you have a lock and two loose forwards putting in an 80min shift.
And the Munster monsters, Jean and the" Viking" did South Africa and Munster proud@@christinaforde4101
#proudlysouthafrican 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦❤❤❤
Delighted for South Africa. Munster Ireland 🍀.
I wasn't worried for a minute about the 7-1split. Rassie's picks for the Boks squad were mostly utility players. Infact, Rassie went as far back as grade school & high school in that respect. Absolutely brilliant!
Matt Williams must be very negative now since the team he hates the most just became the world champions for another 4 long years😂😂😂😂
EXACTLY 💯!
The springbok was faster than the kiwi. Danko💥
Matt Williams is the only person that can make onions cry 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
We need to see what was said after the game. The full picture
Pretty sure Matt Williams' love of his life ran off with a South African.
Well done South Africa.
2023 Springbok team is the best team ever on rugby history!!!!
We've got bragging rights for the next 4 years but guaranteed some fans from some national teams will be saying the usual " Boks don't deserve to be WC Champions", " Boks play boring Rugby" and so on. Ag, nevermind. ✌💚💛🇿🇦
South Africa appeared in only 8 rugby World cup's and won 4 jeez imagine if they'd played in 10 😢😂😂 could've been 6 world cup's .
I think you should take everything Matt says with a pinch of salt. Looking at his track record as coach he is no position to criticize and comment on selections and decisions made by any of the coaches of the top 4 ranked teams.
Love watching these panels after the game😂wonder if they eating humble pie after we won 🏆
And Rassie indeed came out as the rugby intellectual giant...
humble pie mr williams. Happy Halloween
Rassie and Nienaber brilliant !!!!
Matt Williams - Voetsek!
oooooh the chest pains in the panel. Love to see it
Thank you Bokke 🎉 united we stand 😅
The sweetest thing ever😂
Stop crisizing THE BEST in World rugby..jus take notes!.. we won!!!!🎉 viva Bokke!
No DNA just RSA 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
We trust all of our players, we just have players for different scenarios and game plans. We went back to back to prove it
Love it or hate it, the 7 - 1 was genius in the final, won us the game didn't it. Matt, you are such a sed person, maybe retirement is best for you. ( Rob Karney and Shane, what gentleman ) bravo to you.
"14 losses out of 17 games you coached" does that stats sound familiar Matty. Oops, its your legacy.......better to keep quite, very quite🤐🤐🤐
Gotta say I like this channel. One might have thought they'd disappear, after the quarters.
We did it. That one in the middle can talk all he wants. We will be busy shining the Rugby Cup here in South Africa.
Tonga was "that" game. The physicality in that game was crazy.
We did it🎉 two Bul can't stay in one kraal thank South Africa
Those crazy Springsboks.
@5:30 I think he needs to update his stats because South Africa was in the lead for 77mins of this game
South Africa and Springboks are the best 👌 🎉
Virgin media.. why did you choose Scotland's Worst Ever Coach as a pundit? By the way Matt. We're South Africans ... we're not "scared" of anything.
WE DID IT
I het that old geezer is still spewing 2 months later. Love it !
7-1 should go down in history as the Bomb squard formation 🎉
oh Matt please come out with the Irish in June You were the Extra man the Boks needeed
Matt Williams eat your heart out mate. You were so pessimistically wrong. I hope you watched chasing the sun.
Mr. Williams theory on the game of the Springboks . . . I have no words.
😂😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉 thanks for all the disrespect for years which gave us lots of motivation
Fantastic assessments!
Lol. Love Giorgio and his accent!❤
Good draw for us.
But one information is missing: what if Ukraine and there's still bad
