This is why we South African's have so much respect for you. Jim you are really an honest host and you are a legend mate. Thanks for the respect you have towards the Boks. This series is so good, we love it.
I’m gonna be honest, as an irishman, even though we didn’t obviously win the team who I did want to win after us was SA…. I love how the players constantly speak about playing for South Africa!!! It was amazing to see how they constant talk about loving their country and playing for their country, and sia kolsisi is an absolute legend! Looking forward to watching this!!! Congrats again boks well played.
Likewise. The IRE vs NZ semi was an anomaly. Like the French sides of the past they can produce "that" game, but I'd be surprised if Ireland and SA don't start putting 20 points over NZ on a regular basis, because we're clearly learning from one another. The ABs are masters at killing the game in their 25 with deliberate fouls. That leads teams into becoming despondent and believing they are invincible, but SA and IRE are beginning to dispel that myth. The elimination of Bongi in the final is a classic example of that type of play, with multiple players committing deliberate fouls. Remember, for the 75 years prior to '95 the Springboks dominated the ABs. Once that memory begins creeping back into their headspace it's going to be a different playing field entirely.
Ah mate so good getting positive feedback from an irishman. Having nervous fits already for the tour later this year. Respect the irish in the same way i respect NZ. Just all round monsters in all the teams.
What struck me, playing it forward loosing Marks , the call to replace him with Pollard and then to loose Bongi 2 minutes into the final; the 3rd choice hooker at 37 years old played the game out for a win Thats Magic Thats collosal !!!!
There was nothing magical about Brannas hooker roles in the final, our line out was so bad we pretty much gave up on it and we zero parity in the scrums. What he did was tackles and carry like a warrior. But a large part of our tactics went right out the window the moment Bongi got injured. That's not magical, we were lucky.. the youngest Barret missing a kick he's nailed many a times was part of that luck
In truth your lineout disintegrated and your scrum wasn’t great against an Ab pack with a back on the side. You got through it tbf but that was mainly due to factors outside of your control
It’s great reply when kiwi mates give you kak about them getting red carded. Or in general. Marx was our best player going into WC. How ouke Ireland without sexton , France without DuPont , NZ without Savea gone ?
@@71bootneck In hindsight, I am sure Ireland would have rather left Sexton out of the squad. He was a passenger in the qtr final loss against NZ. Fair enough on Marx, tbf SA did have a few major injury problems. I’m sure you have an actual 3rd hooker in SA who can throw the ball in and scrum properly though 😉
Jim your love for the game and your levelheadedness are a credit to you! People from outside of SA have no idea how great Rassie actually has to be as a person in order to be able to pull off what he has, and to continue to do what he's doing in SA rugby. By going to the Apartheid museum you have got a taste of it, and I think you'll appreciate him more and more over time as you learn more about South Africa. Rassie's stature is so far beyond his greatness as a rugby coach, which on its own is astounding. To be able to resist pressure from all sides on all fronts, be they political, intracultural or whatever, and stay the course on the high road he took, requires something we can barely fathom. There is a marvellous poem by Rudyard Kipling called "If". Rassie is just about as close as one can get to embodying and living that poem. He'll be remembered, and studied, in South Africa for generations. And the best part of it all is revealed in that little clip from the celebrations after the RWC '23 medal ceremony - Jacques Nienaber quietly walking over to Rassie, the two of them hidden behind the celebrating Boks and letting all and sundry take the glory. Humility. God bless that man!
If you love it so much, imagine us South Africans!! The range of emotions from laughter to crying to goosebumps!! It’s a MUST watch to any rugby lover!
I cry like a baby every time I watch that show. We had tough times but so proud of who we are. And Rugby just makes it better, fact that whole nation are now involved is so special. With the World Cup, they started a "just wear it Friday" meaning any tipe of Springbok clothing. And we all do, companies distributed shirts to employees for free! Fridays, it was green and gold were ever you looked. Everyone united! And then we BRAAI!!!
We live in the US now, but we will always remain 🇿🇦 at heart. Our friends here have completely bought into rugby because of the world cup. Imagine the first game of rugby you ever watched was SA v France in the quarter final. They absolutely loved it. Bought Cheslin shirts and now watch even the MLR.
As a South African living in England I can’t wait to watch this documentary when it comes out here. I was privileged to take my wife, my 9 and 12 year old daughters to the final. Officially the greatest day of our lives. Made us so incredibly proud to be South African. Love our Boks and our people. Jim you’re a legend mate!! 👊👊
Great review Jim thanks..I’m a dual SA/UK citizen who lived in the UK for 18 years day dreaming about returning to Africa every single day..Covid cost me my job there so I drove my Toyota Hilux Invincible for 8 months back from London to Cape Town overland on my own. I miss the £ I’m not going to lie but South Africa is such an amazing country I’d rather struggle financially than live comfortably abroad and feel that constant yearning to this rugby mad country with its unique set of challenges..once Africa is in your blood it’s in your blood!
Jim, another Afrikaans guy here. Also served the British Army for 12 years. We love your show show and the way you talk about South Africa. You are always welcome here!
Irishman here. The rugby media in Ireland with the exceptions of lads who have actually played the game at the highest levels like Luke Fitzgerald, Alan Quinlan, Brian O'Driscoll, Bernard Jackman and Stephen Ferris are an absolute and utter disgrace. Off the Ball radio show both AM and PM (with Quinlan and O'Driscoll the exceptions) are utterly clueless and their daft views serve only to pump-up and motivate Irelands opposition. Well done on Rassie for calling out Off the Ball!!
Respect or your words - love Ferris and Quinlan so smart both of them with great words and thoughts and clarity on things or things in SA they know exist but can accept go deeper than they ever will clearly get - holding thumbs for a great tour !!
Don't worry mate. OTB is facing stiff competition from NZ breakdown show of late from a SA perspective. Rather we just enjoy the rugby and focus less on the white noise
Jim- I am so glad you agree that Matt Williams is a "doos", we prove to him time and again that he gets it wrong when it comes to our Boks, you on the other hand are one of the most objective pundits around, thank you for taking the time to get to know us ...
Contrast the Six Nations documentary to Chasing the Sun 2, the Netflix documentary was good. But when you watch the words of Rassie speaking to his players versus Gregor Townsend, chalk and cheese. Especially at the end of episode 2 after losing to Ireland, they way that Rassie spoke to the team, he brought them down to a level where they needed to want not to be there again. I tell you what, I cant wait for the Irish tour in July...
Sheesh, that hit my core . Jim, you are definitely the Bokke of rugby podcasting, incredible analysis... I could listen to you all day and every day talking about rugby. Best review ever❤
Thanks for this Jim. Great to hear the 'outside' perspective. Chasing the Sun 1 was the best documentary I've ever seen. They HAVE to get these on Netflix for the US market to see. Highlights for me from Ep2 1. Malherbe saying "they have some big guys too you know". He says it like any 60 yr old Afrikaans farmer and I wish I could translate it culturally for the Irish to understand that it's the biggest compliment you can get from a guy like that. 2. Rassie going for the jugular in the Monday morning was hard to watch. Imagine the amount of player respect you need to have built up to go after the captain and after the songs (remember Bongi). I'm still not sure if he was really pissed off or if it was his plan to get them ready for France (and maybe get the focus off Manie). 3. PSDT being such an incredible introvert. He doesn't even say much in Afrikaans. Good luck with that interview ;)
Big Jim, I must be honest here mate...you are by FAR my favorite rugby pundit. I absolutely love your neutral take and view on everything. I absolutely love watching your content champ and I always click when I see your pic in the thumbnail because I know it will be top quality analytical insights. Thank you mate, you are an absolute legend!
Bongi’s as a kid left the black side of his small town where all the kids were playing soccer to the white side to join the kids playing rugby. I watched an interview with his mother and she was so happy that the white kids befriended him and they just had fun together. A conservative and tough part of South Africa one cannot take these things for granted. Thank you Jim for your interest in SA rugby. Ya when Marx got injured I thought that was the end of our World Cup dreams. PSDT’s grandfather was famous in the SA side for being strong enough to pick up the hooker with one arm.
Big Jim i am so glad you were engaged when season 2 was put together. You're one of the best pundits I've ever come across and to take the time out to really understand the South African story is just great. I've said it before that i just enjoy listening to your content....gripping stuff as always.👌👌
Thank you Jim. Love the part where you mention learning the culture of South Africa and how big Afrikaans is as a language. There are almost 8 million people that speak the language as a first language and many that can hear and understand it, it's very big in South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦.
Thanks Jim - I watched your docu about South African rugby that you produced a few years back - how you interacted with communities on all levels and even had game time with several on their pitches and grounds - I was struck how honest you were to "expose" all the warts and inequalities in the game throughout SA but not for sensationalism but for letting a South African like myself see how the decks are really stacked and obviously for the wider rugby audience..
Love you for loving South Africa. Challenges plenty, but a great country with a mixture of cultures that’s making it “rich”. Diverse but not as United as we should be but we’re growing through the beautiful medium off sport. Live this country man … ❤
That final speech to end the episode, probably resonated with every man in sport and business. In Rassie's words basiscally saying I know there is more in you, and I will not be accept this level. I and every sport fan expect the best. Loved it!
Thanks Jim. Appreciate your interest on our country. Pieter Steph is a legacy player. When you go to their farm you can see old rugby jerseys, (Springboks, Wales and Lions) from his grandfather's time hanging on the walls. Very cool.
Thank you, I cry during every episode. I really don't think the rest of the rugby world gets it, but thank you for trying to learn more of our country. Weekends when it is provincial rugby, us SAFFAS are in a war with one another, but oh boy, when our boys play in green and gold, this country unites like you cannot believe!!!
Really liked your final comment. I'm going through some serious health problems at the minute and the one thing that keeps my mind off it all is the Friday and Saturday URC games, KOKO show, The Rugby Pod, even the bloody well GBR😂. Please keep it up its unbelievable how these shows/podcasts can inspire and give hope.
You are probably the only commentator that shows South Africa respect and you will never know what that means to us, especially when all the world wants to do is HATE us. Thank you Jim. You are absolute class.
@moniqueconley6468 all the main rugby podcasters do, it's just in Ireland, some, not all, of those off the Ball characters are a tad hateful. Name the '"most" that don't show respect?
Best rugby pundit by far. Massive fan.Honest , entertaining and always, although very experienced, willing to engage and learn. Hope you channel hits the 50 k mark soon.
Great watch Big Jim! Thank you for that and for making the effort to visit, look around here and understand us and our culture. For me, it's fascinating to hear how non-Saffas experience CTS in general. Respect Big Man 👊
Michael Karam I think Tim Cocker from Eggchasers Rugby Podcast gives the Boks the same respect if not more. Both very knowledgeable and unbiased in their breakdowns. Love listening to both. ...so I also agree with what you said about Jim
Great show Jim. Thank you sharing your views. We are a special breed, and one can now understand why we are so passionate about our sport, and rugby in particular. It really is one of the few things that does work, BUT we also all know just how much more could work in our country if we had the right ….. leadership. Plain and simple.
Love your work Big Jim! I left SA 9 years ago and have no regrets, but this series reminds me of just what an amazing bunch of people South Africans are. I watch this series on my own due to the way my eyes leak constantly ;-)
Love your work generally, Jim, and your respect for the social context of rugby in South Africa in particular. Outsiders with authenticity, like yourself, are always welcome in SA. To understand the passion that underpins the cultural landscape of rugby in this bittersweet complex country is no easy feat… but you’re notably above most punditry!
I have been following your comments, interviews and just your responses to our team and country. Respect mate, you are one of the few honest commentators out there that simply brings the story, with no hidden agendas or sub text. Good on ye, remain true to your craft! Your love for the game and the people invloved should serve as an inspiration to others. Greetings and good luck...
Many Fans (me included) and Commentators mentioned the words that Marx is the 1 irreplaceable player in the Bok squad; but how the dealt with that setback and Bongi's injury to follow was flipping amazing. Pollards call up was the best off-set to the loss of Marx.
Rassies speach right at the end is what I feel was a major part in the shift to become back to back world champions, I guess we will have to wacth the next episodes to find out for sure
As rugby lovers we respect people like you, you played hard but after the game all was forgiven and the (rugby) fraternity is stronger for that. As a pundit you clearly love rugby and the respect you show us (RSA) and your objectivity makes for great viewing. You will always be welcome in my house, Big Jim.
I was waiting for this since Monday. Even Goodie made an appearance 😂. Big ups to you Jim. Your love for the game is so evident and it’s so genuine. Your commentary has always been led by that love for the game, it’s unbiased and that is so refreshing. .. 👏🏾👏🏾 As for old Mat Williams, karma is definitely on him.. Grumpy old coach that never made it, desperately fighting for relevance. I actually think he got too much airtime on the episode. 😂😂
Clips of the second episode doing the rounds on social media and lots of people here in South Africa dislike the way Rassie started to speak to the players after the Ireland defeat. Can clearly see these people have never been in a cut-throat environment. Love the inside look this series offers to the public.
Nice work Jim, like you I’m also a former DHS Old Boys Club man, played u21s in 1998-2000, didn’t realise you were there too until your harrowing story about being challenged outside the club, crazy stuff!
I've just subscribed, i enjoy your content! not only this video, its all videos. if you are honest about the boks, i can trust all your views on the other team because i know you're not biased.TBH listening to your views during the wc it was no surprise seeing you on chasing the sun, and you and tim from eggchasers deserve all the respect you get from not only from south africa but the whole of the rugby world!!!
Really appreciate your insight on South Africa trying to understand our ethos for rugby. I think it's so deep don't want to write reams but I am "English" South African, with Belgium, Cornwall and Scottish ancestry. Then you have the Afrikaans rugby to them is entwined in their culture the ethos of pride, commitment, hard work, passion. And as a whole us South Africans are passionate about our country. The rugby is something to take pride in when all else is dark that shows the world what we are made of what it means to be a South African that we are scrappers underdogs that give us a chance we can become champions.
Jim, we so appreciate your objective love of rugby. Thanks for your contribution and coverage of the World Cup last year. So refreshing and easy to listen to. Cheers from a Durban boy 🤙🏼
Big Jim. Fantastic summary of in my opinion the best sports doccie since chasing the sun 1. A perfect oppertunity for you will be to follow the primary school setup ( Craven Week/u12 inter provincial weeks) to get the real feel of how these stories begin.
Been following your work for the past few years now and I must say that your views and respect resonates with us South Africans. Majority of us SAFFAs feel we dont get the respect and recognition we deserve after winning the 2019 WC so this WC in France we still felt like we needed to prove a point, I know i speak for majority of us SAFFAs, we respect you and you're welcome here anytime big guy 👊
Great work, Jim, always enjoy your analysis. Your great enthusiasm and passion for the game, getting right into the back stories, the relationships between players and teams, and the cultures, make you a true rugby legend. Thanks for reminding us of all those wonderful talking points and for appreciating Rassie's way. Well done for trying to learn more about our beautiful, complex country. I find it so difficult to answer the question, "how is SA?" Dricus got it right. A country full of committed and determined people, but so hard for us to trust enough to find the way that is good for us all. Rassie shows us that this dream is possible!!
Love your show Big Jim,we in South Africa have so much respect for you and the work, you put in for doing such a amazing show everytime. And you being such a legend in world rugby. Afrikaans:Dankie vir jou respek vir ons Springbok rugby. ( Thank you for your respect for our Springbok rugby) take care Big Jim. From South Africa Cape Town
well said, love your comments, you might want to rewatch episode 1 when Rassie tells the team "nothing works in South Africa, its all broken, except the Springboks" and tells the lads its because we are not stupid we are intelligent and that's why we are doing this for SA to show the country if we as a team stand together, work as a team we can succeed... hopefully our country's leaders where watching!
JIm you have great insight and your unbiased curiosity speaks volumes for your professionalism I have no idea what Matt Williams has ever acheived as a rugby man but please dont stop him from speaking his misinformed mind Its all the boks need to motivate themselves for the two tests in June I am sure you will be here !
What really struck me from the episode is just how angry Rassie was after the Ireland loss. I think he didn’t like the way the Boks lost. This, even though he previously said that it wasn’t a must win game.
Big Jim, mate I've always loved your straightforward nature and passion for rugby. I watched your series where you went around the world and dug your vibe. So yes I'm a Saffer and have unconscious bias towards the Springboks however I love the game and stories about human endeavor no matter from whom and from where! Keep it up!
i think the thing that stands out about rassie as a coach is the way he treats the players. He can hype them up, but also show an almost fatherly disappointment in them, like being scolded by your dad. The end op episode 2 was like, wow, rassie was really pissed off.
I love your views on the show, Rassie, Bongi and PSDT and the emotion you put in your clips. I also love the straight talking no bulsh!t view you take on. You probably the best rugby pundit/podcast at tbe momemt.
This is why we South African's have so much respect for you. Jim you are really an honest host and you are a legend mate. Thanks for the respect you have towards the Boks. This series is so good, we love it.
Could not agree more! Big Jim was brilliant during the World Cup coverage, and it continues.
bro, the fact that you are willing to learn about what really goes into what the boks are playing for makes your an honourary Saffa.
He lived and played there for a while. He has a real understanding and love for SA and the books. Quality bloke
I’m gonna be honest, as an irishman, even though we didn’t obviously win the team who I did want to win after us was SA…. I love how the players constantly speak about playing for South Africa!!! Big Jim, you're a legend. Love your show and appreciate your approach - humble, inciteful, top class!
Get well soon mate.
Mate I know the feeling too well. These podcasts are great to listen to and keep the mind off the pain.I hope you recover fully soon.
Stay strong! We are made tough!
All the very best to you. It's not easy but this too will pass.🙏🇿🇦
Check out the carnivore diet boet....fixes all auto immune issues.
You are probably the only commentator that shows South Africa respect and you will never know what that means to us, especially when all the world wants to do is HATE us. Thank you Jim. You are absolute class.
Many show respect, big Jim actually shows love
@@fomofud9479 I can agree on the love, but I do not agree that MOST show us respect.
Eggschaser is also a great show to watch, also very neutral and loved by SAFFAs
@moniqueconley6468 all the main rugby podcasters do, it's just in Ireland, some, not all, of those off the Ball characters are a tad hateful. Name the '"most" that don't show respect?
Best rugby pundit by far. Massive fan.Honest , entertaining and always, although very experienced, willing to engage and learn. Hope you channel hits the 50 k mark soon.
Great watch Big Jim! Thank you for that and for making the effort to visit, look around here and understand us and our culture. For me, it's fascinating to hear how non-Saffas experience CTS in general. Respect Big Man 👊
Bit biased as a South African, but truly love big Jim. Man of respect and insight.
Legend. Best rugby pundit out there, and the only one who gives South Africa (Boks and the country at large) the respect it deserves 🙌
I have watched a lot of rugby doccos, nothing beats chasing the sun. Thanks for the insight as always, keep it up Jim.
Great to hear your view on a superb documentary!
Mad respect for big Jim - and the time you take mate and not just see but learn/reflect on how other people live their lives🙌🏾
Magnificent series, really enjoying it..👌👌
Thanks Jim - my family and I (Saffa born kiwis) LOVE your channel and just enjoying our rugby through your eyes! Cannot wait to see Chasing the sun 2.
Love your work Big Jim! I left SA 9 years ago and have no regrets, but this series reminds me of just what an amazing bunch of people South Africans are. I watch this series on my own due to the way my eyes leak constantly ;-)
Thank you so much for giving your perspective much appreciated. I would braai for you any day boet.
It’s an EPIC series Jim! Hats off to you for diving into the back stories. I’m loving Chasing The Sun 2. It’s tough in the diaspora though!!
Great show . Durbanite South African in London. Really enjoy this and the show with Andy g . Keep it up .
Good for you. You really found a way to ditch this horrible Durban heat and humidity we're still having in April.
Yoh, Jim 🥹☺️🇿🇦 Loved your cameo, and hope we'll get to see more of you in Chasing the Sun 2
You are by far the best pundit.. Thats coming from a saffa who followed your career you were my 2nd fav hardman
Jim,South African here.Whow,respect....you the best.
I was waiting for this since Monday. Even Goodie made an appearance 😂.
Big ups to you Jim. Your love for the game is so evident and it’s so genuine. Your commentary has always been led by that love for the game, it’s unbiased and that is so refreshing. .. 👏🏾👏🏾
As for old Mat Williams, karma is definitely on him..
Grumpy old coach that never made it, desperately fighting for relevance. I actually think he got too much airtime on the episode. 😂😂
Big respect to you Jim, from a Durban boy. Hope you come to Durban for the Ireland game.
Clips of the second episode doing the rounds on social media and lots of people here in South Africa dislike the way Rassie started to speak to the players after the Ireland defeat. Can clearly see these people have never been in a cut-throat environment. Love the inside look this series offers to the public.
Big Jim's the best rugby media personality on the planet, period. From a Bok fan!! x
Came here straight after watching the show! Loving the content Jim keep up the awesome work!
Nice work Jim, like you I’m also a former DHS Old Boys Club man, played u21s in 1998-2000, didn’t realise you were there too until your harrowing story about being challenged outside the club, crazy stuff!
School!
Gotta love Jim, thanks for cool insights. Respect to Ireland see you in July 👍🏼👍🏼
Great work Jim. Think you gonna catch a lot of flack from your northern hemisphere mates for this one. 😅
Keep up the great work 👍👍👍
MATE, THE WAY YOU PROMOTE RUGBY, IS WHAT THE GAME NEED TO GROW. THANK YOU
Thank you Jim! You love the game & we love you for that! Keep up the good work!
Jim, awesome ep! Following your channel from now on. Honest review, talking sense. You are a legend!
Episode three is magnificent. Ive just finished watching it twice. Wow wow wow.
Big Jim. Fantastic summary of in my opinion the best sports doccie since chasing the sun 1. A perfect oppertunity for you will be to follow the primary school setup ( Craven Week/u12 inter provincial weeks) to get the real feel of how these stories begin.
Jim, mate... you're too humble. You starred in Chasing the Sun 2 💪🏽
I have watched a lot of your interviews with our Springbok players. Respect. Thank you. Professional work.
Loved it! And love your respect for our beautiful country brother- back at ya!
Jim thank you for the support you show to our Springbok team, your shows are epic, love them.
Loving it too Jim and love all the work you do in rugby and the respect and appreciation you have for springbok rugby culture. You’re one of us
Been following your work for the past few years now and I must say that your views and respect resonates with us South Africans.
Love your show. Always got the most objective views , but your certain understanding and love for SA and the Boks is great and tangible
Thanks for your input, we are proud of our rugby team
Youre a class act big Jim...love you buddy all the way from SA❤
Matt Williams record when coaching Scotland... 17 games, 14 loses...
@@Jesus4farrsHow many did Big Jim play in, if still around.
I am not suprised at all about those stats of clever Matt as coach@@Jesus4farrs
I honestly so enjoy your presentations. For me the best rugby podcast around. Chasing the Sun is awesome 💪🏽🇿🇦💪🏻
Awesome video Jim. Wait until you see Episode 3... damn!!
Keep it up!
The '97 Lions tour doc was epic, agree it is up there along with CTS.
i think the thing that stands out about rassie as a coach is the way he treats the players. He can hype them up, but also show an almost fatherly disappointment in them, like being scolded by your dad. The end op episode 2 was like, wow, rassie was really pissed off.
Good on you, Jimbo💪 Always a top listen.
I love your views on the show, Rassie, Bongi and PSDT and the emotion you put in your clips. I also love the straight talking no bulsh!t view you take on. You probably the best rugby pundit/podcast at tbe momemt.
Always love your videos Jim. Keep them coming❤
