Yes you right ignore my country men mate, South Africa had an off day in the sense that England forced us into their game. They did by beating us at our own game, South Africa doesn't play like NZ we front up and play off set piece it doesn't look flashy but it's ultra effective and something our players don't have to buy into its in our school structures. I'm not saying it's always effective as it could of been a different story on any other day but credit to England they forced us into it which is how you best teams. The fact that we won though is impressive I stopped watching after 20 minutes with Mannie Libbok tossing in the 10 jumper

I watched that game, live, in a Pub, in NZ - me in my England Top, with 2 other Brits sporting the Red Rose - the Rest were Saffas - all resplendent in their Nations Colours.
It was a glorious 60 minutes.
But credit to South Africa - when they knew what they were doing wasn't working, they subbed out their entire bench, they switched up their game plan drastically and they came away with the win.
    It was heart breaking.
At the end though, I shook the hands of strangers who I'd just shared 90 or so minutes of an emotional rollercoaster, Got a hug from one of the Saffa Ladies - and remembered that this is why we watch Rugby.
I just wish it was England v the All Blacks in the final.

Yeah man, the whole thing is a headfuck tbh. As gutted as I was - and still am truth be told - from the overall result, this was the BEST ENGLAND PERFORMANCE I HAVE SEEN SINCE THE 2019 WC SF!
Yes we had a game plan to kick via 9 or 10 to the wings and put the SA wingers under pressure - which we executed.
But after winning the high ball we needed to come inside and win midfield contact to recycle or draw penalties....and we did this too!
We were also so bloody good at the breakdown and in the set piece!
I've never seen SA give away so many turnovers or lose so many of their own lineouts.
Meanwhile we were pretty much faultless on our own ball...and most of all we were so so disciplined in contact.
I wish OF had not lost his head in the 1st half - I have no idea how he got into a situation where he was penalised twice for arguing with the ref - but its hard to criticise him too much given how he played for most of the game...including the best drop goal I have ever seen!
Despite all these positives in the first 40, I found myself saying that a 12-6 lead at HT was worrying. It just wasn't a big enough gap to reflect our dominance.
Curry going off on 32 mins and not coming back for the 2nd half was also a huge loss for us.
I was almost certain that the 2nd half would bring a SA comeback and we needed a 2 score cushion.
When OF dropped that goal to make it 15-6 I thought we had enough to see it home.
Of course I expected a SA try - it was always going to happen - but when it did I thought they were too late.
I never thought our scrum would fail as badly as it did.
I know the blame has been put mainly on Genge and Sincks...I think this is partly true - they were both out scrummaged by their opposite numbers. But I also think Itoje was dead on his feet for the last 15 and Chessum simply couldn't provide the same ballast as Martin.
Other subs also cost us badly - Billy V was useless and Care didn't play the kicking game as well as Mitchell did.
On the other hand, the SA replacements were all amazing. And in the end we lost because their squad was just better than ours.

  • @malteserwfj

What I found curious in the last 10-15 minutes was that England seemed to kick the ball away a lot, putting the pressure on SA (which I get), rather than trying to kick for goal and increase their lead.

That Drop-goal drill kinda reminds me of a moment in IRE-FRA in the last 6 nations, where the French also had a set play on the opponent's ball, actually in a similar situation (fast forwards chasing to counter-ruck and turnover). You even said back then you expected to see more of this at the RWC!

Ha-ha, Erasmus is a strategic and tactical master.
5 months later, and I watched the SA-France game again. Then it struck me (and I may have the sequence and names wrong):
      (1) 20mins to go and Steph du Toit is pulled for concussion-test. Temp replacement Fourie.
      (2) 10mins later, Du Toit's concussion-test showed nothing. But simultaneously hooker Mbonambi now goes for concussion test.
So, with 10 minutes to the final whistle, there are two pairs of relatively fresh legs on the field, namely Du Toit (after a 10mins break) and Fourie now at hooker.
So apart from having used 8 regular replacements, Coach Erasmus had figured out how to make it (sort of) NINE replacements, by making use of the compulsory concussion-test!
Love him or hate him for it; Erasmus sure knows how to use / abuse the rugby rules.
