Voldemort's Horcruxes RANKED (Worst to Best) - Harry Potter Theory

  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’re going to be discussing Voldemort and his horcruxes. A known proponent of dark magic, Tom Riddle was a troubled young boy who began experimenting with the dark arts at an extremely young age. As he grew older and older, Tom Riddle, who had been born with an inability to feel certain emotions- grew hungry for power- fuelled by the spite that he felt towards his parentage and a world that he felt ‘rejected’ him right from the start. Dumbledore first encounters Riddle at Wool’s orphanage in 1938, and it’s on this visit that Dumbledore informs Riddle of his magical background. Riddle knew he was different, but he didn’t know WHAT he was- he had no sense of identity, however, that certainly didn’t stop him from tormenting all of the other orphans. As the years passed, Riddle underwent a lot of change- first he got in to darker and darker forms of magic- and later he decided to get rid of his ‘filthy’ muggle name- from that point onward going by a name that would strike fear in to the hearts of wizardkind- Voldemort.
Today’s video is going to look at one particular piece of dark magic that Voldemort produced in his lifetime- the horcrux ‘wickedest of magical inventions’. While studying at Hogwarts, Tom Riddle befriended Horace Slughorn, his (then) potions professor. Slughorn had a reputation for choosing favourites- and Tom, who demonstrated an unparalleled ability to learn and uncanny ability to perform magic, became one of these favourites. However, it was this relationship that lead to Slughorn revealing pivotal information about Horcruxes to Riddle.
A horcrux is an object in which a dark witch or wizard has imbued part of their soul. The ultimate purpose of creating a horcrux is to achieve immortality. However, the truly sinister component of creating a horcrux is that in order to produce one, you must MURDER someone. There are only two known wizards who have created a Horcrux, the first being Herpo the Foul and the second being Voldemort, who produced many. In fact, Voldemort ended up creating 7.
Anyway, without further ado, let’s dive in to Voldemort’s horcruxes, where I’ll be ranking them from LEAST to MOST effective (at least in my opinion). Bear in mind this list will NOT be in order of creation.

You know what's funny I was wondering the other day which horcrux was more powerful and which horcrux was the weakest I swear to you like a few days ago I was thinking about that and I didn't know which one was which I had to look it up but I'm glad you made a video about that thank you so much
I thought the diary was the most powerful because I know he had that when he was a kid and that was his first one and because in the chamber of secrets he could literally possess Ginny and suck out all the Life in her and then it'll go to him and then he'll be an actual person again and not a memory so I was thinking that was the most powerful one or the first one he made or something like that

      3) The locket
      4) The snake
5/6) The cup and the diadem

I would have put the diadem higher than the cup, because at least in the book, the diadem was the reason for the battle of hogwarts. I would also put the diary higher than Nagini, though Nagini had a large impact on the story. The diary could control a Basilisk, nearly closed hogwarts, and almost brought voldemort back to life

    • @lotsofspots

If each Horcrux creation splits the soul in half, the Diary would be half-a-Voldemort, Nagini would be a hundred-and-twenty-eighth.

If it is being rated on the horcrux's safety, enchantments and level of danger then Harry Potter Theory nailed it! The diadem was in Hogwarts with no defense besides the room of requirement which many people have breached; the cup was in Gringotts but that could be breached also, although extremely more difficult and dangerous; the locket was somewhere hidden and enchanted by Voldemort in a potion of despair surrounded by inferi (RAB was lucky to have saved Kreacher and only Dumbledore could have penetrated otherwise and he needed Harry; the diary although not protected at all but hidden in plain site was sentient and capable of concealing and protecting itself through possession and knowledge and control of the basilisk; the ring powerfully hidden although not in a very secure location was cursed to kill and was responsible for Dumbledore's suicide mission; Nagini actually brought Voldemort back from spectral existence and killed Snape and she was impervious to magic as all spells bounced off her, nevermind he could communicate and command her; and Harry the only Horcrux that had free will and was protected by ancient magic and yet was responsible for the destruction of Voldemort himself making Harry the most protected and deadly horcrux! Just my opinion.

Yeah the locket also deserves to be higher up as it was so well protected but the ring was barley expect for the curse
Also the diary happens to have 50 precent of voldemorts soul the ring 25% the locket 12.5 the cup 6.25 the diadem 3.125% harry 1.5625% the snake 0.78125%
      And finaly voldemort 0.78125%
I dont think it makes a difference but theres a chance the effectiveness of the horcrux depends on how much of your soul is enclosed in it.

I'm going to disagree strongly with number 7. The Diadem. I think it was placed there for a two VERY exact reasons (in J.K.'s thinking that is and I am guessing), The purpose for a horcrux is to spare the cursed person aka (a horcrux is a curse on oneself, possibly like damning oneself) Tom from death.
Also Tom's thinking was so FEW would be able to access the room AND the Diadem was hidden even in there. Also Harry most likely found it the first time because of Tom's piece of soul in him otherwise I doubt it would have ever been found.
HOWEVER, should Tom EVER be like he once was and totally wandering the world and barely alive. I'll bet the Diadem would act in a similar fashion as the diary did. I also bet the Diadem IF Tom was alive and in power that if anyone placed in on their head they'd be COMPLETELY under the mental control of Tom.
So basically it was placed so that someone of import (Tom thought the room only responded to those like himself, most clever and powerful) upon finding it and Tom being in need. Would bring him back. AND if Tom was in power it would simply make them a mental slave. PERFECT.. Except Harry found it and took it.

I do think youre almost correct. The reason i think that the diary was able to take control of ginny was because of the amount of voldemorts soul was put in it, 50%. By the time voldemort makes the diadem horcrux its the last horcrux he makes before he was destroyed the first time, bringing the soul concentration down to 3.125 if we half every time he split his soul. Now, I do think that whosoever wore and kept wearing the diadem would slowly change over time especially since the diadem was suppose to enchance the wearers intelligence so by that way it already had a path straight to the mind but i dont think voldemort would be able control/take over like he does to ginny with the diary simply because of soul concentration. Really cool horcrux though and it likely wouldve stood the test of time even if it was found because whose going to destroy a beautiful diadem and even if they wanted to part it out they wouldnt be able to. And if it was ever found out to be ravenclaws lost diadem who wouldnt protect such a valuable piece of hogwarts history. Its only that harry found it and knew wxactly what it was that was its undoing like most other horcruxes

For a while I believed that Dumbledore's wand was a horcrux of his, and so even if the wand was stolen or won from him, any spell used on him by that wand would either fail or backfire as the wand would refuse to harm or kill the person that had the same soul as the soulfragment inside the wand. I thought Snape used the killing curse of Dumbledore for this exact reason; Snape was the only one who knew Dumbledore had a horcrux, and so he couldn't die, but they also had to make sure it seemed like Dumbledore was killed so nobody would suspect anything and no information would be divulged. But I was wrong...

  • @lebitelexie9350
    @lebitelexie9350 2 года назад +3

    Great video!
Although I would probably rate the Diary as second or first. Why? Because it was outright meant for causing havoc. It was created with the purpose to one day return to Hogwarts (As a possible sabotage in case he cannot take it over, I assume. Cause I don't think he planned ahead for getting busted by his how spell thanks to Harry). And this horcrux had the power to actually draw energy and manifest into an almost full body. The other ones were relatively inert and powerless compared to the diary. Presumably due to the long time they were stashed away without anyone touching them. Also if I recall right, Rowling made a comment that if the Tom Riddle from the diary could escape properly, he would've found Voldemort's main soul and they would've become more powerful.
Nagini is an interesting choice for horcrux. Dumbledore did mention that living beeings are risky but then again, Nagini was the very last horcrux to be destroyed simply because that snake is almost always at Voldemort's proximity and if he is around, a large snake might be the least of your problem. Not to mention the insane protection he put on her when it became obvious that his horcruxes are in danger.
The locket is again, one of the curious one simply because it can be worn and it was demonstrated that when worn, it can affect people. It is likely that if the locket is nurtured long enough by someone, the soul fragment could become strong and manipulative like the diary even despite the lack of ink and communication. (You said "it mainly affected Ron who wore it the most" I disagree. I think it affected Ron the most because he was the most sheltered of the trio. Harry grew up under terrible conditions, often starving and abused. Hermione simple seems to be enduring to harsh circumstances. Ron was way too used to a nurturing, loving mother and huge meals whenever he wished. Starvation and negative emotions doped up by a horcrux is a baaad combination)
I am very fine with Harry beeing the number one. It was unintended. It was a proto-horcrux, not even a fully fledged one. There is a moment in the Goblet of Fire. While Harry is telling Dumbledore what happend in the graveyard. When he gets to the part where Wormtail took his blood to revive Voldemort, Dumbledore gets up to inspect the wound and Harry swears he saw triumph in his eyes for a fleeting moment but on the second glance he cannot be sure. Was that the moment when Dumbledore realized that Harry now might have a chance to cheat death when the time comes for the soul fragment in him to be destroyed?

      To support this belief:
These are some lines from Chapter 33 (not in order)
Harry stood in the headmaster's office yet again.
Marvolo Gaunt's ring lay on the desk before Dumbledore. It was cracked; the sword of Gryffindor lay beside it.
Dumbledore sagged sideways in the thronelike chair behind the desk, apparently semiconscious. His right hand dangled over the side, blackened and burned.
"Why," said Snape, without preamble, "why did you put on that ring? It carries a curse, surely you realized that. Why even touch it?"
"It is a miracle you managed to return here!" Snape sounded furious. "That ring carried a curse of extraordinary power, to contain it is all we can hope for; I have trapped the curse in one hand for the time being--"
      In chapter 35 Dumbledore says:
"‘When I discovered it, after all those years, buried in the
abandoned home of the Gaunts, the Hallow I had craved most of all - though in my youth I had wanted it for very different reasons - I lost my head, Harry. I quite forgot that it was now a Horcrux, that the ring was sure to carry a curse. I picked it up, and I put it on, and for a second I imagined that I was about to see Ariana, and my mother, and my father, and to tell them how very, very sorry I was."
Based on this, we know that Dumbledore puts the ring on at the Gaunt house and is cursed somewhere other than Hogwarts. From the line "I lost my head...the ring was sure to carry a curse", I think he gets the curse as soon as he puts the ring on.
      My timeline of events is:
      1) Dumbledore found the ring at the Gaunts' house and puts it on.
      2) The curse takes effect
      3) Dumbledore gets back to Hogwarts ASAP.
      4) He summons Snape
      5) Before Snape arrives, he uses the sword on the ring.
      6) Snape saves Dumbledore's from dying of the curse.

    • @benwillis5840
      @benwillis5840 2 года назад

Also, the fact that Snape contains the curse in Dumbledore's hand suggests that it was designed to start there and spread. It makes most sense to me that this happened when Dumbledore put it on. I doubt he was wearing it when he tried to hit it with a sword!

If talking about effectiveness overall I agree with you, but to me I might put Harry toward the bottom of the list because he was not intently made one as a baby. There for he paid n o mind to Harry especially considering love/emotion as weakness, and not realizing love/emotion had magical properties/magic/protection. But if Voldemort knew or was made aware of this maybe he could of used harry more and play with his mind/make him go insane or serve him or somehow bring him to evil. Harry could have become an asset to the cause, and then Voldemort could have turned on him/killed him like he did Snape. First killing Harry to kill his own soul, and then a second time (a la nagini or neville with the sword) kill Harry to make sure the prophesy was fulfilled this time making Voldemort the victor.

I have questions. Hufflepuff's cup was obtained while a young Riddle was working at Borgin and Burkes. So in the late 1940s? If the cup ended up in Bellatrix's vault, was she around back then? I always pictured her and her sister as being in their 30s, or 40s at the oldest. Older than Harry's parents (would be if alive), but not old enough to have been around that early. Same with Lucius ending up with the diary. Would this mean these horcruxes had different hiding places before reaching Lucius and Bella? Also, clearly wizards and witches can murder someone and not make horcruxes. Presumably the soul is split with the act of killing, so what happens to the split soul piece? Does it just fade away? Would this make the witch or wizard weaker?
That's all, I don't wish to overwhelm you with questions.

    • @aralornwolf3140

Well... Considering that the series began in the year 1991 (Harry's first year at Hogwarts)... and Bellatrix's sister had an eleven year old son (Draco)... I surmise that Voldemort had a semi-permanent home he used before being outed as a Dark Wizard where he stored some of his treasures in (or had his own vault at Gringots... and only took his stuff out of it to prevent the Aurors from finding anything incriminating before entrusting their care to his favourite Death Eaters).
When he had a following, he had some of them aid him in hiding his horcruxes (also, keep in mind Bellatrix was Voldemort's Lover according to the author).
As for the rest, I surmise that it requires magic to force a piece of one's soul into another object. While for everyone else, their soul is harmed, but doesn't split apart.
And, it wouldn't make a witch weaker or stronger... it might make them more irrational though (the guilt of murdering a person is hard on most people).
