The FIRST Horcrux Creator (Herpo The Foul's Story) - Harry Potter Explained

  • Hey guys,
    Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In the last couple of videos, I’ve been covering some territory in Harry Potter folklore that a lot of you may have never heard. The folklore in Harry Potter is very rich, and deep, and I find it intriguing- learning about the history of spells, and investigating evil witches and wizards that existed throughout the ages. First, I discussed the story of Ekrizdis, the Dementor’s creator, and then in my last video I discussed another evil wizard known as Raczidian who was the first wizard in history to have a Patronus charm go all wrong. Telling the tales of these dark wizards is huge fun for me, so naturally, for today’s video, I’m going to continue on that path, and discuss another dark and evil wizard that you MAY have heard of: Herpo the Foul.
    Herpo the Foul was an ancient dark wizard that hailed from Greece. It’s entirely unknown when Herpo walked the earth, but we do know that it was a long long time ago, as he is commonly referred to as one of the earliest known dark wizards. I would imagine that Herpo likely lived in the same era as Raczidian-just in a different part of the world. We know that the story of Illyus and Raczidian occurred in ancient times, before the existence of any of the modern day witches and wizards that we’re accustomed to. It was a time when magic was, not new, but being pushed more than ever in terms of its limits. Witches and wizards that were pure of heart were focusing on producing magic that could make the world a better place- somewhere that was safe, convenient, and prosperous. Their goal was to make life as seamless as possible, and in a time when ‘witch hunts’ likely still existed, I would imagine that there would have been a huge magical focus on protective enchantments and other spells of that nature.
    However, just like in our own muggle world, not everyone that existed was pure of heart- and there were many rotten witches and wizards that were also pushing the boundaries of magic-just, in a negative way. These were the worst types of people: the power hungry, the bloodthirsty, the sociopathic. Herpo the Foul was one of these people.
    Herpo devoted his life to producing and creating some of the worst kinds of magic imaginable-similar to the story of Ekrizdis who solitarily dabbled in black magic on the remote island of Azkaban in the sixteenth century. One really interesting thing about Herpo was that he was born a parselmouth, which meant that he was able to communicate with Snakes. Does that remind you of someone else? We know from the Harry potter books and films that Voldemort was also a parselmouth, and it’s been widely accepted that Voldemort was a parselmouth because he was a descendant of Salazar Slytherin. It’s a hereditary trait. This always made me consider Salazar Slytherin as the original parselmouth, but it turns that the original parselmouth was actually Herpo. What this tells me is that Herpo may have been the distant ancestor of Salazar Slytherin, which really makes a lot of sense, particularly as a lot of the forms of magic that Herpo produced seem to mesh well with people like Voldemort and Salazar.

      Herpo himself could still be alive. we only know that he created a Horcrux, we have no idea if it's been destroyed and (if so) how and by whom it was destroyed.

    • @wafflingmean4477
      @wafflingmean4477 3 года назад +170

      Yeah especially because if I remember right the only methods of destroying horcruxes found in the books were discovered by accident. Harry at the time thought he destroyed the diary just by stabbing it. It was Dumbledore who understood that it had to be something more given the durability of horcruxes, concluding it had to be the venom. And then the Fiendfyre was accidentally discovered as well if I recall correctly. The crucial detail is there are no records of materials or spells that destroy horcruxes. That means Voldemort's may have been the first to ever be destroyed, so Herpo and potentially others may have never died.

    • @yf-n7710
      @yf-n7710 3 года назад +110

      @@wafflingmean4477 IIRC by the time of the Deathly Hallows there are five known methods of destroying a horcrux, and they are listed in the same book that details how to make one. With the diadem it's the other way around, they don't realize it's fiendfyre until it destroys the horcrux, at which point Hermione remembers that fiendfyre was on the list - she hadn't bothered with it before because it was too dangerous.

      Isnt it also cool he created horcruxes, but also the basilisk, which destroys horcruxes? Maybe he died because the basilisk destroyed his horcrux, and that how they found out. Even though a basilisk might be very strong, its also rare, wouldnt come up with using its venom to destroy a horcrux if they werent close together.

    That is exactly my theory too, but all you non-Greek people who have the same idea miss the most important detail, which is really hidden in plain sight.
    The name Herpo, is a direct transfer in English from Greek of the word Herpon-Έρπων (most -ων male names lose their -n in Latin/English, thus why Herpo). Herpon-Έρπων is the participle of the verb herpo-έρπω which means slither. The participle is analyzed as "ούτος ος έρπει"/"ootos os herpee". That in English is translated as "he who is slithering". You english speakers dont pronounce the -g at the end when you speak and the y makes the name sound better than with an i, not to mention that it makes the word sly appear in his name. Thus JK Rowling gave us Hepro's name directly as Salazar's surname: [he who is] Slytherin'.
    Lorewise probably Herpo or his descendants took the english version of that name as a surname when they moved to the british isles.

      I would add that in middle English 'y' was used in many words instead of 'i', and there was no formal spelling rules, so people would often write names however they hear it. "Slyther" is the middle English graphy for "slither", so indeed it is just the spelling of his time petrified in the name.

      "When a magical portrait is taken, the witch or wizard artist will naturally use enchantments to ensure that the painting will be able to move in the usual way. The portrait will be able to use some of the subject's favourite phrases and imitate their general demeanour. Thus, Sir Cadogan's portrait is forever challenging people to a fight, falling off its horse and behaving in a fairly unbalanced way, which is how the subject appeared to the poor wizard who had to paint him, while the portrait of the Fat Lady continues to indulge her love of good food, drink and tip-top security long after her living model passed away.
      "However, neither of these portraits would be capable of having a particularly in-depth discussion about more complex aspects of their lives: they are literally and metaphorically two-dimensional. They are only representations of the living subjects as seen by the artist.
      "Some magical portraits are capable of considerably more interaction with the living word. Traditionally, a headmaster or headmistress is painted before their death. Once the portrait is completed, the headmaster or headmistress in question keeps it under lock and key, regularly visiting it in its cupboard (if so desired) to teach it to act and behave exactly like themselves, and imparting all kinds of usefull memories and pieces of knowledge that may then be shared through the centuries with their succesors in office.

    I always find the commentary on the witchhunts interesting because they always capture the wizard side of it, but not the Muggle side of it. Historically (that is, in the real world), the worry was not "Witches and wizards are evil", it was "This witch or wizard did things that hurt people". That is to say, being a witch was not a crime in most places. Hurting people with your magic, however, was.
    Sounds to me like some misunderstandings were at play.

    Was the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets first let out by Tom Riddle? If Salazar intended the basilisk to purge the school of muggles, was it let out soon after the creation of the chamber? It just seems strange that he wanted to purge the school of muggles, but he locked it away in a very _secret_ chamber.
    And I've wondered this about horcruxes - do you have to murder someone and simultaneously weave some magic into the object intended to be the horcux, or does a horcux happen every time you murder someone?

I mean the ones in potter they knew going into it but lets say the opal necklace turned out to be a horcrux (a popular fan theory) would it be possible to tell who made it? and if so how?

    • @edopronk1303
      @edopronk1303 3 года назад

      It would probably be hard, but doable in the right circumstances; it has some aura and influence on the carrier. An advanced researcher like Scamander could use things like the powder he uses in the 'crimes of grindelwald' to discover what happened with the circus.
      Combine that with reverse spell, which gives the last spells done with a want. Those items/spells could be transformed to find the creator.
      If you then aren't familiar with the person itself, it would still be hard to find the creator in person.
