  • Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing horcruxes as well as a figure in Harry Potter folklore that you may not know very well- Herpo the Foul.
Herpo the Foul was an ancient dark wizard that hailed from Greece. We don’t have an exact date as to when Herpo walked the earth, but we do know that it was a long long time ago, as he is commonly referred to as one of the earliest known dark wizards.
It was a time when magic was, not new, but being pushed more than ever in terms of its limits- particularly on the darker side of the spectrum. This is largely in part due to the ongoing wizarding/muggle conflict where witches/wizards were being demonized and hunted by the muggle population.
The Wizard and the Hopping Pot’ - a short story from Beedle the Bard explains the state of wizard/muggle affairs accurately:
"As the witch-hunts grew ever fiercer, wizarding families began to live double lives, using charms of concealment to protect themselves and their families. By the seventeenth century, any witch or wizard who chose to fraternise with Muggles became suspect, even an outcast in his or her own community."
Many witches and wizards were forced to hide- to retreat- taking the moral high ground by not retaliating and potentially making the situation more dire. However, some witches and wizards- wizards like Herpo the Foul- used this era to practice the worst kinds of dark arts imaginable- all in the name of retribution. Where a morally GOOD magical practitioner in this time may have practiced something like a concealment charm (in hopes of better hiding the wizarding population), his evil counterpart would likely spend his efforts trying to produce a spell that could eradicate muggles.
Herpo devoted his life to producing and creating some of the worst kinds of magic imaginable-similar to the story of Ekrizdis (the possible father of dementors) who solitarily dabbled in black magic on the remote island of Azkaban in the sixteenth century. Herpo was possibly the original Parselmouth (meaning he can speak to Snakes) and for this reason I believe that he was possibly the distant ancestor of both Voldemort and Salazar Slytherin.
When one thinks of Horcruxes we most commonly jump to ‘Voldemort’ since he was able to produce 7: Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring, the Diary of Tom Riddle, Helga Hufflepuff’s Cup, Salazar Slytherin’s Locket, Rowena Ravenclaw’s Diadem, Nagini and even Harry Potter (sort of). However, what people often overlook is that HERPO is the original Horcrux creator- and this arguably makes him even more sinister because, as the first practitioner of this type of magic, I can’t even begin to imagine what sorts of dark arts experiments he overlooked in order to achieve his goal. What is also worth mentioning, however, is that Herpo and Voldemort are the ONLY witches and wizards to have ever produced a horcrux at all. This either tells me that they are particularly talented, particularly demented, or a combination of both. JK Rowling has openly stated herself that many witches and wizards had tried to create one-but none succeeded.
"...wizards would have been looking for ways to do exactly what Voldemort did for years. And some of the ways they would have tried would’ve killed them. So, I imagine it- well, they’re huge parallels- splitting the atom would be a very good parallel in our world. . . . I do imagine that other people are going to have tried. I think it would be naive not to think that people have been trying for a long time, and thought they succeeded and hadn’t, or else maimed themselves or killed themselves in the attempt. It’s such a dangerous thing to do."
So why did Voldemort create Horcruxes in the first place? Well- to achieve immortality of course. The sole function of a horcrux is to preserve and extend your life force- and one thing that I find particularly interesting is that it is unknown whether Herpo is actually alive or not in present day. If Herpo made a horcrux- then there’s still a very good chance that he’s alive, right?
By the time Voldemort came around the Horcrux creation process was outlined in a book called ‘Secrets of the Darkest Art’- and this is where I’m going to begin to piece together my argument for WHY Herpo may still be ALIVE.

By the time Harry goes to hogwarts, yes you almost HAVE to be Salazar’s descendant to speak to snakes, Ernie even says that Salazar slytherin could speak to snakes, he jumped to Salazar because he was the most known person to talk snake language. Of course, it is possible that he is a descendant, but you said that he could be related because he bred a basilisk, this makes sense but let me remind you, you should have said “He was the first to breed and control a basilisk” because many dark wizards have tried to breed the serpent and died because they didn’t speak parseltounge and couldn’t control the beast, which then killed them. I totally agree with you on this, and even better, Herpo’s real surname was never released to the public, I doubt anyone alive during the first wizarding war did. He could be “Herpo Slytherin”! 🐍

Maybe even the "the darkest arts" book that Voldemort read in the restricted section. You would have thought that Borgin, Snape, Dumbledore or someone at the Ministry would have realized what it was. Borgin did deal with dark items. The Trio discussed this when trying to think of places that Voldemort could have his one of his, and they figured Borgin would have realized in an instant what it was. After Katie's attack, Snape, Dumbledore and the Ministry would really inspect the thing. The closest we got was Snape saying that she was very lucky to be alive. But you would think that Dumbledore would have told Harry that the necklace used to be one when he told Harry about Voldemort's. That's not to say that it may have been his Horcruxe at one time, we know remorse can put your Soul back together, we don't know if putting your soul back together would damage the item like what happened when you destroy one. If Herpo's body was killed and he was a non-coperal being for hundreds of years maybe he did feel enough remorse to put his soul back together. I have two theories about this.
1.) More than Voldemort and Herpo the foul have created horcruxes. The Ministery of Magic and the previous magical governing bodies have kept it under wraps. Most people in the magical world don't even know horcruxes are a thing. If it were common knowledge then everyone would have known Voldemort must have made a horcrux or horcruxes the moment he returned. Lucius Malfoy didn't know what the diary was other than it was the key to opening the chamber of secrets. I think the ministry quietly captured other dark wizards who had made horcruxes and took the horcruxes and sent them to the department of Mysteries where they were experimented on to figure out how to destroy them.
2.) A division of the Department of Mysteries actually killed people (probably Azkaban prisoners who've had ther souls sucked out.) and created horcruxes for the sole purpose of figuring out how to put the soul back together. While experimenting on captured horcruxes to learn how to destroy them. This would explain why that information is in the book "Secrets of the darkest art". I highly doubt Herpo the Foul would have experimented on his horcrux to see what would destroy it nor do I think he would go through the process of making a horcrux only to put his soul back together again. I can see the Ministery of Magic figuring out everything there is to know about Horcruxes then using magic to edit the book "secrets of the darkest art". Magic that when you edit one copy of the book you edit all copies. The magic probably isn't strong enough to just wipe the spell out of the books but strong enough to add in the knowledge of how destroy a horcrux, how to put your soul back together, information on recognizing horcruxes and warnings that make it seem far more difficult and dangerous to create horcruxes. Warnings to deter those who are thinking about making a horcrux, information on destroying and recognizing horcruxes so if someone came across one they would recognize it and know how to destroy it and information on how to put your soul back together if are stupid and try it and immediately regret doing it. The cat was out of bag when the book "secrets of the darkest art" was made. Given the age of the book it's doubtful the Ministery of Magic would know exactly how many copies of the book exist. It's not exactly a book a witch or wizard would have on their bookshelf. It would be kept hidden away from prying eyes. This would be the best course of action to lessen the damage a spell like that could do.

I think Voldemort first heard about horcruxes from the basilisk, we don't really think about it but Voldemort must have learned a lot from the snake. it's technically his genesis, it's his legacy from Salazar the key to make and destroy horcruxes, it was left in the chamber to kill muggles there's a reason his death eater mark is a snake coming out of a head, it's the chamber of secrets. A 1000 year old beast he can speak to and command that had first-hand contact with Salazar, I think Salazar left it in the chamber not just as a weapon for his heir but also as a means to make horcruxes or maybe the snake had info on Herpo and that's why Voldemort went to Albania.

The interesting thing with Herpo is the span of history he covers as he is said to have been born in the period of “Ancient Greece”. Unfortunately that narrows it down to anywhere between 12th century BC to about 600ad. In the Wiki lore he is said to have lived for at least 900 years so the latest by that would have been about 15th century putting him in Beedle and Flamel’s era. I like to think Herpo was likely to have been born more around the change of time and his reign coincided with the Medieval or Dark Times.

You might give your theory on HOW a horcrux restores the maker. We see a couple of ways Voldemort does it, but in each case it appears to require the assistance of someone else. What if, for instance, the inanimate horcrux remains isolated in the room of requirement forever?

I have always wondered even if a wizard creates a hocrux to extend their life force their physical body still continues to age as Voldermont’s did which means they do not die a physical death but instead petrify. For a dark wizard to overcome petrification, maybe every couple of decades he/she will attempt to steal the life force of another preferable a fellow wizard to replenish their vitality similar to Tom Riddle & Ginny’s situation in the chamber of secrets. The other possibility is performing some sort of resurgence spell similar to the rebirth of Voldermont at Little Hangelton graveyard to obtain a newborn body.

    2. What if you made fawkes a horcrux
    3. Voldemort vs Darth Vader, who was more powerful (loved the LOTR comparison). Or do which franchise was more powerful.
    4. What would happen if one person owned all three of the deathly hallows and what it means to be master of death (like are you immortal or just invincible etc.)

Crazier theory, Nicholas Flamel is actually Herpo the Foul. The Philosopher's Stone was his Horcrux. He needed a part of his soul to create such a strong object, and it's how he became "immortal". But after living so long, he learned to turn away from the dark arts, especially after meeting Dumbledore. He confided in Dumbledore who he was and what he'd done, which is why Dumbledore was "particularly fierce on the subject". He saw how regretful his friend was for creating something so horrible and was trying to honor him by not allowing others to follow in his path. Maybe I'm crazy though

It’s unlikely that was the case due to how different the two were in personality when it came to muggles and power/knowledge. Herpo wasn’t bias against muggles, he’d use whatever as a means to an end for dark arts knowledge. But he didn’t want to conquer and rule. Just progression of forbidden knowledge at any cost.
Salazar however couldn’t stand muggles from jump. Now if your theory was correct that could just be summed up as change of heart. However Salazar was best friends with Godrick who was about as Griffindor as they come. Good and loyal.
Why would Someone like Godrick even remotely be friends with someone who would give off a dark presence Herbo would exude? Plus why would someone like Herpo even want to start a school? That benefits others knowledge not his.
That type of change of heart would be less likely coming from someone of that type of character with that specific end goal.

The wizarding world discussing the horcrux: This is magic most foul! Living forever and not wanting to die is unnatural!
    Nicolas Flamel: Yeah, totally unnatural… o.o O.O .>
I always found it interesting how the Philosopher’s Stone could grant you a form of immortality and wasn’t looked down upon (theoretically) yet horcruxes were. I know the Elixir had to be drunk for eternity if the person wanted to live forever and it would result in a very ghastly appearance, but both it and a horcrux lead to an unnaturally long life. This life could possibly be very empty after a time, and I think that’s why the greatest power in the books was to become Master of Death, meaning you finally accept that mortality gives life purpose and meaning.

I'm using Herpo as a villain in my fanfic, so I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks he's alive!
EDIT: So in my story, Herpo is the guy who convinced Wizards that Muggles were out to kill them, and convinced Muggles that Wizards were evil. Dividing the world like this let him play both sides to his own advantage for gain- Not hard power like Voldemort, but soft power and luxuries. He loves his Muggle cheeses and Muggle wines as much as he loves collecting Dark magical artifacts. A discerning man of wealth and taste, one who already could rule the world if he wanted to but has no interest in it. Hard power like what Voldemort wanted is a tiresome thing. There's too much paperwork, too much to oversee, too many people trying to kill you. Herpo is way, way too smart for that.

Good point about the opal necklace being a horcrux, honestly though I think Herpo hasn't fully come back. We see that voldermort needs a lot of help te return to life from his horcrux, the feeding on unicorn blood and then the ritual which Wormtail does to give him a proper body again. I believe the books speak of him as wandering about in a fragile almost ghost like form. If Herpo didn't have this kind of assistance he might still float about between life and death. Or perhaps he is living on the back of someone's head. Perhaps the back of Owl Bulluck's head (not sure if its written like that but I feel like I'll get flagged if I spell it with an o)
