      1. Cruciatus ( I do not know if i'm correct but this curse causes target ultimate suffering, worse than death and anything possible by it's definition, what's more there is also no ethical exuse to use it)
      2. Blood malediction (It's sick to curse not only enemy but also innocent descendants)
      3. Oblivate (maybe its not a curse, but it can be irreversible and can make you a vegetable, which probably even horkruxes cant prevent (Lockhart fate). It also can take all your happy memories of friends, family, ur daughter. Can break your identity, humanity, sanity , manipulate you probably worse than imperius)
4.Imperius ( Taking away your will and freedom is very sinister. Dark wizard can force u to do whatever, killing, stealing, torturing, spreading imperius (probably), commiting some unimaginable crimes, it can also take your secrets. It's also potentialy more powerfull than horkruxes.
      5. Avada kedavra (curses above has potential to lead to fates worse than death)
6 Gormlaith Gaunt's curse (if its reversible then there is still hope, thats why it's lower than kedavra.
      7.Entrail-Expelling Curse (its cruel)
      8. sectumpsepra (its almost same as above but less cruel)
      9. Fiendfire (it has potential to destroy dark objects, but casted poorly can lead to disaster, if im correct its unlimited and last even after death of a caster.
10 Reducto (i couldnt find anything worse from wiki)

Yes, I agree the imperious curse isn't that bad, or could be positive, except when the caster can literally make you end yourself against your will, or kill someone you know. Mind control is no joke. You may feel great under the curse, until it's lifted, then you remember all the horrible things you were forced to do, and now have to try to live with the consequences, and guilt of those actions.

Even in a mental health setting, being under the Imperius Curse can be more addictive than any drug in the entire world and as a book from a completely different series (The Illusion) points out, alternating Cruciatus (pain) and Imperius (pleasure) can maximise the effectiveness of the torture.

As you say, curses are dark charms. And as charms is magic that changes the properties of people and objects, I feel like Avada Kedavra simply changes the properties of targets from "alive" to "dead". It sounds simple, but the effects of the killing curse are instant. Not "VERY fast", but instant. As such, organ failure and soul ripping seems unlikely to me, as they require a proces (although I know your organs won't function as a result of you dying, but it is not the cause). Just like Wingardium Leviosa does not make objects fly/float by making them lighter or blowing air downwards, but simply changes property to "flying", Avada Kedavra is not a curse for stopping your heart, or tearing away your soul. It doesn't cut you. It doesn't hurt you. You don't explode.
You die. It is a curse that makes you dead.

Fiendfyre is pretty horrible too, potentially to even its own caster, as it's hard to control, destroys about everything and seeks out the living to engulf. Hermione knew that it would likely destroy the horcrux they had, but didn't even want to consider using it, because it's so dangerous.

  • @dom2056

In theory, you could torture someone much more effectively and gruesomly with imperio than crucio, not to mention the infinite other negative possibilities mind control can cause. Obviously the caster would have to be seriously sick and creative but it could potentially top all of the others, and the fact that it is euphoric for the victim only makes it that much more sinister

The imperious curse feels like the embodiment of the "slippery slope". A parent could make their kid focus on their tests, but it would be easily for the parent to fall into a dark hole. For instance the parent could go from making the kid do his or her homework to forbidding the child from falling in love before they graduate school.
It not that the curse itself is bad it's that humans are terrible beings who're more likely to use it for wrong doing than good deeds, not out right intentional but like a bad opiate addiction that started out with legitimate use such as surviving cancer. Imagine watching a relative survive cancer only to lose their life to a opiate addiction.

    • @Aquilenne

I mean, even used in the best possible light, the curse is pretty awful.
Taking away someone's autonomy feels like a violation, regardless of what it is you're forcing them to do. A parent forcing their child to do their homework would be disgusting. The only way that I'd see its use as being justified is if the only alternative is something more permanent like having no other alternative but to kill them. But in that case it's still not being used for good deeds, but rather a less awful one.

It would make sense to put the Cruciatus Curse near the top. One of the reasons induced coma is used as a medical tool is because, in some instances, the patient may be in so much pain that it can have a lasting psychological impact, for example in case of severe 3rd degree burns. I imagine the effects of the Cruciatus Curse emulates this to some degree, perhaps even exceeding it.

It’s infamy would have made a lot more sense if it did something more messed up: like destroying the target’s soul or somehow blocking it’s access to the afterlife.

    • @jackweaver1846

Totally agree with you, but I might have an answer. I think it’s so vilified for two reasons. One, it can’t be blocked by protection spells and there is no counter curse to it. As far as I know, it is the only spell like this, so obviously it is a terrifying curse to exist. That any duel can be ended by simply using this spell is reason enough to make it completely outlawed. The other reason is that it sole purpose is to kill. With other spells that can be lethal, there is the potential for them to be used in ways that are not. For instance, using the entrails expelling curse mentioned in this video is a horrifying way to kill someone, but could also be used to gut an animal that is being hunted. Since it has other uses, the curse isn’t necessarily evil, it just depends on how it’s used. The killing curse is only used to kill, so there is really no good use for it (unless you want to get into the ethical dilemma of whether or not it’s okay to kill bad people, which following the themes of the HP series, Rowling seems to believe that killing is never the answer.)

One reason comes to mind: There's supposedly no way to defend against the Killing Curse other than don't get hit. So while there are other spells/curses that also kill, it's possible to defend against those and survive a direct hit or prevent/weaken them by casting the Shield Charm or something.

Avada Kedavra is honestly way too overpowered. The only _potential_ defenses are a love sacrifice or placing a large object between yourself and the curse. The idea that even defensive/deflective spells can’t save you is, well, unfair, for lack of a better word. It just gives the caster too much power. Now, it’s not a very easy curse to perform. Truthfully, Voldemort is probably the only one who used it successfully from what we see (maybe. Haven’t read the books in a while). Moody/Crouch Jr. used it on a spider, so can’t really say much there; Bellatrix didn’t actually cast it in book 5; and Snape didn’t truly want to kill Dumbledore, at least not malevolently so I don’t believe that it actually killed him.

Not a curse, but quite devastating:
Bombarda (as well as Bombarda Maxima): It was essebtially like a grenade to a stick of dynamite in term of explosion effect.

I think the Imperius Curse is an exceptionally dangerous curse. In my opinion - at least from what I know from books, films and the internet - it is the worst curse there is. There are countless curses or spells or simply "Muggle methods" to torture or kill someone, etc. But our ability as humans to develop our own personality with individual character and to make decisions within that framework (regardless of whether we are wizards or Muggles) is something completely different, which is why manipulating that ability is so terrible. The ability to say "no" is what makes us human. It is an indispensable part of evolution, so in my opinion this curse should be number 1 by far.

I have to confess that I actually preferred two up to three curses in your list, you put beyond the Malediction/Maledictus Curse, definitely beginning with "Avada Kedavera", followed by the "Entrail-Expelling-Curse" and just maybe (!) with conditions (!!) "Transmogrifian Torture". Their seemingly at least extracted from the information of "HP and the Cursed Child" combined with "Fantastic Beasts" as well as Rowlings Twitter-Infos is absolutely no cure or treatment for the Maledictus Curse. You can't even prevent let alone break the heritage of the curse for future generations. If creating the most powerful protection requires willfull self-sacrifice. Than I can only imagine that such a potent curse a perversion of ancient protective magic requires. But back to the reasoning of my personal change of your list for me. As a wizard I'd be definitely so ambitious that I was completely perfect in unsaid spell-casting 😅. After all in 10 of 10 sessions I was declared to be a Ravenclaw (Pottermore) with a Silver-Lime wand. To kill me with the "usual" Killing Curse would be the goal eitherway - once, the Maledictus-Form would grow to strong. Because of the "Entrail-Expelling-Curse", I mentioned unsaid spell-casting. Once every last Counterspell failed and I had no lung I would knock out myself with unsaid shockspells towards my own head.

    The 3 Unforgivable Curses are labeled so because of the specific intent to perform;
Just the fact that one is able to successfully cast this curse upon a human being is indisputable proof of the caster's intentions and immorality; if it worked, then by definition you _have to be_ an immoral fiend. These are curses that require hatred, sadism, murderous intent, or the desire to robe someone if free will in order to operate properly. There simply cannot be the excuse "Oh, it was an accident!"
In trials regarding the Unforgivable Curses, the only question that needs to be answered is the identity of the caster.

With the three unforgivable curses you need to actually mean for it to work you can't just say the word and it would work

The transmogrifian torture could possibly be blocked by a shield charm or reversed if caught in time. The unforgivable curses can't be blocked except for dodging or physical shields like placing things infront of you. The imperious curse has to run its course of in other words it stops after a time period. So the unforgivable aren't curable or blockable magically. That is my theory. Crouch junior acting as Madeye said it best they are unblockable and irreversible and unstoppable.

I think sectumsempra should have been on the list.

*My top 5 most terrible curses:*
    1: Crucio
    2: Fiendfire
    3: Avada Kedavera
    4: Sectum Sempra
    5: Imperio
The reason why Avada Kedavera is 3rd is because it causes no pain and the victim has an ultimatly peaceful death. Crucio although not deadly. Can torture someone to madness. Fiendfire can go easily out of control and consume someone without a problem. The other two are pretty self explanatory.

Where's Dolohov's curse? Even though he cast it wordlessly against Hermione, she had to take 10 potions a day just to recover, implying it causes some pretty severe internal damage. If spoken, it could be deadly, and could've been what killed Lupin.

Avada kadavra is basically just a gun and there's no nuclear option. It's no wonder why the wizarding world is scared of muggles, they already lost to muggles before
