History of the Forbidden Forest - Harry Potter Explained

  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing the complete history of the Forbidden Forest, a common backdrop for important moments throughout the Harry Potter series for both Harry, his friends, AND his enemies.
As many of you will remember, the Forbidden Forest is first introduced in The Philosopher’s Stone as a scary, dark place where students are not allowed to enter, never mind roam about and explore. Of course, one very large caveat to this rule is if those same students ever find themselves in a bit of trouble. As much as it really makes absolutely NO sense what-so-ever, a punishment bestowed upon multiple students over the years, including Harry, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom and Draco Malfoy in the first installment of the series, is to send them INTO the Forbidden Forest. This form of “detention” is meant to help Hagrid with random duties required in the upkeep of the portion of the Forest that resides on school property. As this was the detention they were given for merely being out of bed after hours, makes one wonder what the punishment would’ve been for actually going into the Forest…more time spent IN THE FOREST? Like I said…it really doesn’t make any sense AT ALL.
Anyway, I’d like to start off today’s video with a brief summary of the Forbidden Forest as we know it through Harry Potter. Because, although there are many fantastical locations and magical places in which Harry and his friends visit throughout the novels and films alike, it may not be immediately apparent just how important the Forbidden Forest is to the series.
Now, it's a very typical trope for an enchanted forest - whether filled with “light” magic or “dark” - to represent a way to achieve transformation for those who enter it. What I mean is that magical forests are often used as a literary device to be a catalyst of change for any number of fictional characters. They enter the forest as one version of themselves, and emerge forever transformed.
All this to say that I do, indeed, believe that there are quite a few transformations that take place within the Forbidden Forest, many of which I will get into later in the video. BUT, in my opinion, it’s quite evident that the MAIN transformation that takes place in the series is at the very end of the seventh book (which, as many of you will know, is the eighth movie) and is directly related to the protagonist of the story: our dear boy, Harry.

Wait wait I thought the trauma of Harry seeing death for the first time was through Cedric's in goblet of fire, not Sirius in the Ministry of Magic(UK) ...
These unknown spells that were seen in the book(the spell used to turn a death eater head into a baby) Ron wanted to kill it,but Hermione stopped him..
What spell was the one that death eater use to hit Hermione in the chest, that made a heart before she said "Oh" ..than she got knock out
Why Rowling decided to omit Frienze scene in the book for Divination sub teacher? when Sybil was sacked at not meeting Umbridges standards...
And the book: made by Snape(authored Half blood prince)
Why Ministry change the course curriculum in the book, and omitted things? To allow students to fell Advance Potions..
What was the book that had a Screaming face coming out of it,in the Restriction section when Harry attempted to read?

In the Forbidden Forest, Firenze doesn't say it's Voldemort. He suggests that is though, and as Harry is asking Firenze if he means Voldemort, he is interrupted by Hermione calling his name. And I believe the same happened in the movie. Firenze never says Voldemort name. Also, I want to know how the Centaurs knew that Voldemort still lived. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, chapter fifteen, The Forbidden Forest page 189 Firenze says to Harry "Can you think of nobody who has waited many years to return to power, who clung to life, awaiting their chance." (Forshadowing about Horcruxes) Showing that the Centaurs, or at let Firenze knew that Voldemort lived. Firenze even acknowledges that others believed Voldemort dead and says it Codswallop in his opinion. We don't really get confirmation that the cloaked figure is Voldemort until Harry is talking to Professor Quirrell/Voldemort.

As a counterpoint, I think it makes perfect sense Hogwarts is next to the Dark Forest. Especially after the statute of secrecy, I'm sure magical "real estate" became scarce. To boot, as wild magical creatures needed to be hidden from muggles, I'm sure the forest became a dumping ground for all manner of beasts. It only makes sense to build a magical school next to a magical forest. It probably benefitted them as well as a buffer, and also a place to gather resources and knowledge.

    • @elliottvaughn700
      @elliottvaughn700 Год назад +6

Right. Also while the book never fully mentions the plant-life there I imagine that the forest is rich with different potion ingredients, Herbology resources, obviously care of magical creatures... creatures, and Defense Against the Dark Arts topics for reference. It has a whole lot to teach and reference about the magical world and while students are forbidden to enter due to safety concerns there's most likely a lot to be drawn from by teachers. Also to the point of Fred and George I'd hazard a guess that some of their prank/candy creations included ingredients from the forest which is why they had taken a keen interest in it!

A note to keep in mind. Is that in Medieval Europe (where many fantasy societies are based from) forests were forbidden. They were unmapped and hard to navigate. The Black Forest in Germany alone is the source of many fairytales for this very reason.
Edit: but it could be forbidden as in a sanctuary for rare magical creatures which would explain the use in Care for Magical Creature classes (playing into the grounds keepers caring for it as well).

One thing I've always poundered upon about Book 3.
Harry sees a future version of himself casting the Patronas charm. Given how we later find out this happens due to Harry and Hermione going back in time, Harry casting the charm himself.
I believe that Buckbeak was never truly killed the initial time we see Waldon swinging his axe (it's been my theory that Harry and Hermione have gone through this time line 2 times - first time to save Harry, Sirius and Buckbeak and then a second time to save Sirius and Buckbeak - if he did die the first time around)
It says that "Harry and Hermione hear a howl and see Hagrid stumbling out of his hut drunk with happiness".this is shortly after they save Buckbeak. Given how Harry, Ron and Hermione hear this same sound after they believe Buckbeak to be dead and before they end up in the Shrieking Shack.

Harry’s only power was he inherited part of Voldemort. He looks powerful against the dark lord because Voldemort was fighting part of himself. Also Harry had ALOT of help from Friends / the school and one of the most powerful wizards of all time, Professor Dumbledore

I have three questions, so if Voldemort's power came from Harry they had the same power??? And if so Harry truly is a powerful wizard if neither Professor Mcgonagall nor Kingsley together could Does that mean Harry could beat them both??
And what if Harry received another Killing Curse? If he couldn't die while Voldemort lives, right?

  • @tamarasmith9060

    "it doesn't make sense"
True, but maybe it's not supposed to make sense. The punishments seem to be chosen to teach that student a lesson they need to learn at that time, as well as keep them on their toes not knowing what kind of punishment they will get. If they know all they get is a minor punishment, a "slap on the wrist" like cleaning the trophy case or such, for breaking certain rules, then they might be more likely to break rules all the time.
When the kids were roaming outside unsupervised at night, though a small chance, they were taking risks. So being sent on a mission where they must knowingly face danger in the forest, even supervised by Hagrid (& secretly the centaurs), is supposed to make them realize that this isn't the same as even just wandering inside the school. They needed a reminder that bad things can happen even to creatures that lived there all the time.
When Harry gets the punishment to assist Lockhart, who needs help with his fan mail, it's because Dumbledore has told McGonagall that's what he wants. He wants Harry to spend even more time with him so that Harry can see up close how Lockhart has let his ego go out of control due to fame. Dumbledore knows that when not in front of a class that's half girls sighing over him, he will relax & be even more obnoxious. He wants Harry to be confident in what he's learned, but more importantly he wants to make sure Harry stays humble & pure of heart as much as he can. Dumbledore knows that taking down Voldemort is going to be a long, hard process & Harry will not just be in physical danger but in danger of losing faith & how important teamwork will always be because even Harry won't be able to do it alone. It takes many people to keep fighting the Death Eaters & Voldemort while Dumbledore ferrets out clues about the horcruxes & then the trio go hunting them. If not for all those people in & out of the Order of the Phoenix who stood up for what was right then Voldemort would've won before Harry could even begin his destined path to end Voldemort & stop the war.

I interpreted it as having to have a compelling reason to use Crucio, not necessarily despising the target. In this case, the reason would be to help his sister. Similar to how Barty Crouch Jr (disguised as Mad Eye) tortured the bug in class in the 4th book. He probably didn't despise the bug, but rather his reason was to eventually manipulate Harry into the graveyard to restore Voldemort's power.

    1. The place was meant to deter students from being unruly. Hagrid wouldn't take them to the actually dangerous places, and he would protect them, but they would still feel fear just because of the atmosphere of the place and the darkness, that is the punishment. Hagrid took them to the area inhabited by Centaurs and Unicorns, so it was essentially just sightseeing filled with adrenaline.
    2. The Forbidden forest is scary and hostile on purpose to deter people from entering. That protects them from what is inside and the creatures inside from people. Creating a barrier between the forest and the school would unwisely detach them from the surrounding world. Students should learn to coexist with the beings there, respect their territory.

Its meant to showcase how much Cedric's death and seeing it has affected him. Same concept, just different people. Cause he blames himself for Cedric dying. He said they grab the cup together, he wouldnt be there, if not for harry it would never be a...transport item i forget what theyre called. Its at the start of book 5 where he CAN see them.

I have two questions, did the unicorn recover, or did he die? And, what does it say about Voldermort and his resilience, that he spent more than a decade attempting to get his body back? Harry was what, 14, when he finally achieved his goal? The prophecy actually was fulfilled, if you stop to think about it, that night in Godrich's Hollow in 1981
