History of Fenrir Greyback: From Wizard to Werewolf - Harry Potter Explained

  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing notorious werewolf Fenrir Greyback- digging in to his past and uncovering some things that you may have never known.
Believe it or not, once upon a time, Fenrir Greyback was just a regular wizard. He didn’t have sharp teeth, long yellow nails, whiskers, or hair sprouting from every part of his body. He also didn’t transform in to a horrible, dangerous magical creature when a full moon filled the sky.
There is speculation out there pertaining to whether or not Greyback was ever a wizard at all. But as it happens, Rowling has confirmed that ONLY wizards are able to transform in to werewolves after being bitten by one, and that muggles simply die. This (if it wasn’t clear already) confirms the fact that Greyback was indeed a wizard.
In fact, though information on him is sparse, the available evidence would suggest that Greyback was perhaps even once a student at Hogwarts just like Harry, Ron and Hermione. This fact would explain his magical skills, his connections within the Death Eaters, and his hatred of ‘normal wizards’.
But on one fateful day, presumably after his wizarding education had finished, wizard Greyback (who likely was already of dubious morality) had an encounter with a werewolf where he was bitten.
At this moment Fenrir was infected with Lycanthropy by the un-named werewolf, a magical affliction that transforms witches and wizards in to werewolves. One who is infected with Lycanthropy is henceforth known as a ‘Lycanthrope’.
There are two ways to become a Lycanthrope, but regardless of HOW it is contracted, it is still considered to be a curse (for which there is no cure) that will completely alter the victims existence.
The first (and most common) way to contract Lycanthropy is through being bitten by a werewolf, though in some circumstances the bite can/will kill you. You must also be bitten by a werewolf in their wolfish form at the time of the full moon- ensuring that the werewolf’s saliva mingles with the victim’s blo*od.

I'm really disappointed that it wasn't Lupin who defeated Greyback, ending the suffering he knows so well and finishing the call for justice his father had first spoken. Something about Greyback having somewhat of a point considering werewolf equality, but nothing justifies attacking small children. Being a werewolf does not define you as less human.

In all fairness guys, many many witches and wizards were already being killed. And considering the fact that people were still afraid because of the war 13 years prior, they decided it'd be easy to just have more kids than to try and save those. And also Molly is a very capable witch. Anyone who was even remotely capable either switched sides to the death eaters, or they were killed or went into hiding assuming that the war was already lost. But these are all speculations. I would've loved to see the final battle to be filled with witches and wizards from all over. Only problem i think is, most people didn't even know about the battle until after it was over.

    • @thecajunphoenix
      @thecajunphoenix Год назад +3

      True enough.
In "Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery", though, there is an example of a Muggle Werewolf -- Penny Haywood's Muggle friend Scarlett Sparks was bitten by a Werewolf, though hopefully not by Fenrir Greyback, and survived the bite, though she also had to cope with the shame and isolation after being infected with Lycanthropy and becoming a Werewolf.
Many werewolves like Scarlett Sparks, Chiara Lobosca, and Remus Lupin keep their condition a secret and try to get by with their lives as best as they can. Fenrir Greyback really brought a lot of the Werewolf's bad reputation upon them and every other Werewolf by setting out to infect as many children with Lycanthropy as possible.
Wolfsbane Potion is a recent invention by Potioneer Damocles Belby. While it can't cure Lycanthropy, it can help a Werewolf maintain control over his/her/their lucidity during their transformation. Because sugar and sugar substitutes cancel out the effects of Wolfsbane Potion, the Werewolf has to drink it pretty quickly to not dwell on the taste so much.

Read books 3 and 6. In Book 3, Lupin talks about when he was bitten, how there was no cure for the bites and infection, and how Dumbledore made it possible for Lupin to come to Hogwarts as a student when no other headmaster would have allowed it. He talks about how he found out it was Greyback who actually bit him, and Greyback’s behavior after he himself got infected, in Book 6. Pretty much everything said in this video was told in the books. I love Lupin’s voice in the audiobook versions narrated by Jim Dale.

i think option 3 book version is that after greyback was left disabled in the battle of hogwarts, that someone likely killed him. He ruined countless lives on a level that any of the death eaters scarcely could even rivial. so it would not be hard to imagine that seeing him defenenceless during the battle that someone may have put an end to him once and for all to make sure this terrible man could never harm anyone ever again, whether that comes from a place of personal experiment with family or friends affected by his actions or a sense of justice. Also while stunned the chaos of the battle with the numerous beasts like arcomantula included he may have been killed by the falling of debries or perhaps a hungry young arcromantula that saw an easy meal. It would be fitting with the latter if greybacvk did meat his end at the hands of a hungry spider like he did to so many others.

He would have been TAKEN after his parents were killed...and it would be easy to manipulate his feelings for OTHER school age wizards toward hate.
In his motives to warping young children into werewolves was likely reflective in how he was treated himself.

Those years doesn't go with me, as Fenrir was born 13.1.1945 (saw it somewhere). If he was really born 1945 he attended Hogwarts in 1955 and ended his attendance in Hogwarts assuming he was bitten shortly AFTER graduation which was in 1962. So he was bitten around his 17 max 18 yo. Somewhere I read Fenrir started resenting wizarding society after Lyall's insensitive wording during trial with Fenrir pretending he's muggle; which held place in 1965. This had to string something painful inside of Fenrir's heart because he decided to bite Remus, not Lyall as a revenge. So I assume he was probably disowned by his family due to his lycantrophy and Lyall's words reminded him this. In Fenrir's head was probably: "You said that werewolves are all monsters and deserves to die. So how will you like if you'll have your own son being turned into werewolf?" By the way, RIP the great David Legeno, who portrayed Fenrir Greyback and made his character exclusive. Especially in HBP. (If there could be any replacement for Dave I'd think about Khabib Nurmagomedov but he's not an actor but retired fighter in octagon :D Dave was both :D )

No. Fenrir Greyback was bitten by a Werewolf and chose to bite and spread Lycanthropy to as many children as possible.
Remus Lupin is scared because he doesn't know that Lycanthropy is only transmissible via bite wounds and that his and Nymphadora Tonks Lupin's son Edward "Teddy" Remus Lupin would not inherit Lupin's Lycanthropy.
I can't vouch for two Werewolves actually being able to mate and procreate while they're in their Wolf forms. If they are, their puppies would look so cute.

Does that mean they are all part of the same genetic family similar to horses, zebras, and donkeys being part of the same family and interbreeding? How did the veela, goblin, and giant species come about? Spells, potions, or natural mutations? Did they come before wizards, same time as wizards or after wizards?
