Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing the Death Eaters- delving in to the ranks of Voldemort’s most powerful followers and uncovering which of these dark witches and wizards are most dangerous.
As a young boy, Tom Riddle lacked a normal range of human emotions. However, that certainly didn’t mean he was unable to control people. His cunning and manipulative nature eventually meant that he would form a ‘gang’ of sorts- a group consisting of his fellow Slytherin students.
The gang that Riddle formed was once described by Dumbledore as “a mixture of the weak seeking protection, the ambitious seeking glory, and the thuggish seeking a leader who could show them more refined cruelty”.
This group were (at that time) known as the Knights of Walpurgis.
But, if we fast forward to the year 1970, 32 years AFTER Tom Riddle had started attending Hogwarts, and the beginning of ‘Voldemort’s’ rise to power, these ‘Knights of Walpurgis’ were known by a different name: ’Death Eaters’.
As far as dark witches and wizards went, the Death Eaters were the worst. This group was comprised of evil witches and wizards that were all hellbent on pursuing their dark ambitions.
They were the followers of Lord Voldemort- and they obeyed his every bidding in an effort to ‘cleanse’ the wizarding world- the ultimate goal being to restore pure-blood authority.
And unfortunately, Voldemort managed to amass quite a lot of them.
Today, we’ll be taking a look at each and every one of these followers, uncovering who they were and just how valuable their contributions may have been to Voldemort.
I’d also like to mention that I’ll be Sticking to OFFICIAL Death Eaters only and not just wizards who followed Voldemort (whether Imperiused or not). There were many followers of Voldemort that were not granted Death Eater status OR given the Dark Mark, but WERE allowed to wear Death Eater garments in order to command the respect they engendered. This group was comprised of individuals that Voldemort found useful but did not want to directly associate himself with. A good example of someone in this category would be Fenrir Greyback.
With all of that established, let’s get in to it.

There’s one issue that bugs me about Voldermont and I wish you can make video on it Why was he never adopted considering the fact that many orphanages at the time had babies adopted out because muggles prefer infants who they can raise as their own as they see fit. According to the caretakers at Voldermont’s orphanage he was an easy baby who never cried that much another bonus in making him the ideal baby to raise. If he was adopted and raised in a loving home by muggles how would that have changed his outcome. Also touch on why there’s no foster care system in the wizard world to have magical children cared for in the magicalWorld if there are no suitable guardians.

Having Snape at #1 is the right call. Voldemort himself said that Snape was a very capable wizard. Snape was the only Death eater who learned how to fly from Voldemort too. He was that powerful. Also, Snape invented 7+ spells of his own, and he was the most brilliant potion maker in his generation. He was a true genius in every respect. Voldemort could not break through his mental defenses to read him, Bellatrix feared him; and every other Death eater was constantly on their guard against him. His double agency not withstanding, they knew he'd smoke them in a duel.

It’s in the movie, not the book. In the book, Snape fled from Flitwick, McGonagall, Slughorn, and Sprout. He was fighting 1v4, jumped out the window, and flew, something only he and Voldemort were able to do in the books.
Snape is clearly the 3rd best Wizard in the series (assuming we don’t count Grindelwald who doesn’t really fight in his old age anyways). So many signs point to it. It’s a shame we don’t ever really get to see him seriously duel much outside of owning Harry at the end of the 6th book. He’s always holding back. It would’ve been nice if maybe he dueled Voldemort to the death when it was clear he would be killed.

He had a talent and a passion for magic, even in his youth, as evidenced by his Potions book! But he didn't go through that stage that we saw with the 3 great wizards that we are comparing him against, where there was a time where they were in love with power. I think his age is important to consider as well, he was something like 36 or 37 when he died. And especially in the wizarding world where wizards typically live well beyond 100 years of age, Snape could have continued to grow stronger for many many more years and close the gap a bit between himself and the 115 year old Dumbledore, and 71 year old Riddle. Grindy achieved the height of his power at about 60 years of age, before his loss and subsequent lifelong imprisonment. Snape did not achieve that absolute highest echelon of strength like the big three and I think his age is the biggest reason.

I disagree about Pettigrew. Even Crabbe *Jr) was able to learn Fiendfyre, even if he couldn't stop it. Not even Voldemort valued Pettigrew; no one valued Pettigrew. Surely all the characters in HP can't have been wrong? However, Voldemort had to take what he could get, especially as people weren't exactly queuing up to help him resurrect. He wouldn't even have been able to become an animagus without James' and Sirius' help (at least, according to Remus).

Voldemort valued wormtail he knew he was loyal but also knew he'd flee at any sign of danger.( he even calls him out for this in the books and movies when he says master i was loyal) If anything he was one of the more loyal death eaters who helped bring Voldemort back even though he did it out of cowardice. Him and Crouch Jr did all the work even Quirrell wasn't much of a help lol. All Quirrell was was a force to feed off of I mean he couldn't even touch harry when the rest of them could. That's cause Voldemort was in him but still useless. Snape, Bella, and Jr, are by far the most powerful death eaters. Snape being the most powerful. Crabbe would have been if he got older and learned to control his magic but a user that cannot control magic isn't powerful. The only reason he conjured that was out of fear of dying. And in turn killed himself.
By 1998, Crabbe was skilled with Dark spells, such as the Cruciatus and the Avada Kedavra Curses, and Fiendfyre conjuration. However, when he released the latter, it killed him due to him neglecting its potency.
He was powerful but also very stupid Like his father before him.
Vincent Crabbe died enclosed in the Room of Requirement, as he apparently did not have the ability to stop the Fiendfyre. After the survivors escaped from the cursed fire, they sat at the seventh-floor corridor (Goyle still Stunned) and watched as the Horcrux broke apart from contact with the fire.

\Interesting. From Books Four and Six.
From Ch1 of Goblet of Fire: 'I am not asking you to do it alone. By that time, my faithful servant will have rejoined us."
"I am a faithful servant," said Wormtail, the merest trace of sullenness in his voice.
"Wormtail, I need somebody with brains, somebody whose loyalty has never wavered, and you, unfortunately, fulfill neither requirement."'
now, I don't know about you but if I had been spoken to like that by my boss I wouldn't feel exactly valued. Even Voldemort knew what Wormtail was- and what he wasn't.
      And from ch33:
'He looked down at Wormtail, who continued to sob.
"You returned to me, not out of loyalty, but out of fear of your old friends. You deserve this pain, Wormtail. You know that, don't you?"
"Yes, master," moaned Wormtail, "please, master ... please"
"Yet you helped return me to my body," said Voldemort coolly, watching Wormtail sob on the ground. "Worthless and traitorous as you are, you helped me ... and Lord Voldemort rewards his helpers ..."'
Note that he waited quite a while to give Wormtail a new hand. It would have taken him seconds following his resurrection, and he could have done it right away, but he left his 'valued' servant writhing and sobbing on the ground in front of his other Death Eaters for a bit before he decided to keep his promise. Not the actions of one who values this particular servant IMHO.
Furthermore, in HBP he detailed Wormtail to Spinners End to serve Snape, who also didn't value him. From Ch2
'We ... we are alone, aren't we?' Narcissa asked quietly.
'Yes, of course. Well, Wormtail's here, but we're not counting vermin, are we?'
He pointed his wand at the wall of books behind him and, with a bang, a hidden door flew open, revealing a narrow staircase upon which a small man stood frozen.
And had it never occurred to you that from the end of Book3, no one refers to Peter Pettigrew as anything but Wormtail from then on. Are you really telling me that Voldemort was in the habit of using anyone's pet name? He was arrogant and evil but not stupid. He knew who and what he had and - and made sure they knew he knew. He does value some of his servants, however; he even goes so far as to tell Snape how much he valued him before having him killed.

James was an auror. He and Lily defied Voldemort thrice. James was a reasonably good student, and quite good at transfiguration. Though he was rather stupid (hence not keeping his wand with him when he knew he and Lily were being hunted for by lord Voldemort), he was extremely brave, and did what he could to help his friends.
Bellatrix was a talented witch. In fact, one of Voldemort’s favourites. She was also reasonably intelligent, not to mention utterly insane, which gave her a huge advantage. Since she had murderous thoughts at all times, torturing and killing people was no big deal. She, like her brother Sirius, was extremely arrogant, which got her killed as well. But she was not noble like the Gryffindors. When she saw a chance, she took it.
I think Bellatrix would win. She wouldn’t wait for James to wash his hands, put on a coat, kiss his wife and son goodbye, rant a few brave words at her, and then grab his wand. She would straight on kill him while his back was turned. That’s what I think would happen.

Even Bellatrix wasn't completely loyal to Voldemort. Helping Narcissa get that vow from Snape WAS a betrayal of his orders. So, she wasn't as totally loyal as she seemed.

Belatrix beaten by a mom Weasly is a result of lazy writting, or just a lack of inspiration, as the whole 7th book is.

It's Harry Potter, not Dragon Ball Z. Differences in power are real but, just like real life, violence is unpredictable. A Navy Seal can be killed by a 14 year old with a gun hidden under their shirt because they don't think they are a threat. Also thematically it makes sense. Bellatrix hated the world and enjoyed cruelty Molly loved the world and the people in it, especially her family. Bellatrix and people like her underestimated just how dangerous a loving person can be if you threaten what they love.

    8-Yaxley
    7-Wormtail
    6-Barty Crunch Jr.
    5-Lucius

    2-Snape
    1-Bellatrix

@@jihanessa4132 He still held off McGonagall while holding back, and she was one of the strongest witches of her time. I forgot that he fled immediately, but he was still able to avoid being killed or captured by the four of them, and two of them were part of the 3 v 1 against Voldy, and Flitwick was no pushover either. I feel like everyone ignores Snape's ability to fly without a broom, I feel like that gives him a pretty good advantage against most people, since he has better movement. I think the fight is hard regardless of who wins though, so if you think Bellatrix wins, that's cool, she's really strong too.
