Hagrid genuinely deserves a spinoff book. Like what did the first Wizarding War look like from his perspective. Everyone applauds Snape for being the right hand guy of Dumbledore- but Hagrid had to have seen and had a massive hands on role. For all the reasons The Ministry would fear Hagrid, I can’t imagine Dumbledore not wanting to put that to use in the Order of the Phoenix. Heck, imagine Voldemort who had already won over the giants, now coming face to face with Hagrid again. Someone who no doubt would trigger a spark of whatever remained of Tom Riddle. Because even if Hagrid didn’t know the history they had, Voldemort would
And what about Harry almost losing his wand? The only reason he didn't was because Dumbledore reminded the M.O.M. that they couldn't destroy his wand without being convicted of his crimes.
I assumed the wand snapping had to do with his age. Newt would have completed his owls and thus was not required to attend a magical school anymore, while Hagrid hadn't .
I think age had as much to do with it or more. He never passed his owls so he was never a recognized wizard. So he would need a license or would fall under magical beast rules as a half giant for wand use.
I have a feeling Dumbledore still taught Hagdrid a bit of magic, and probably fixed and hid his wand in his umbrella. Another reason for why he was so harshly treated is probably because he has such high potential for natural magic, he lights a fire using magic from his "umbrella"...but never says an incantation.
I always thought that Hagrid's wand was destroy BECAUSE he was expelled as such a young age, and two years before he could take (and pass) his OWLS. If I'm not mistaken the OWLS are the tests that allow you to practice magic in the outside world, and been expelled in his third year meant he would never passed his OWLS. I think it would be like been barred from ever taking a driving test because you drove a car and killed people with it at age thirteen. And this actually explain why Newt Scamander, was allowed to keep his wand, as he was expelled much later in his education than Hagrid.
I want a fan fiction arc where Dumbledore kept up Hagrid's schooling in secret, and we follow Hagrid's adventures as he battles the forces of darkness as a young adult.
I also like that despite not necessarily being evil, Aragog brought nothing but negative outcomes to the story. He got hagrid expelled and wand snapped (yes I know it tom was the instigator, but it was still BECAUSE of aragog), he tried to eat harry and ron, and then he (obviously not willingly bc yknow) allowed his children to rampage across the castle during the war. May not have necessarily been evil, he surely brought nothing but trouble 😂
Harry was also threatened with the destruction of his wand by the Ministry in Order of the Phoenix - though this may just be the Ministry overreacting, rather than what he was accused of doing
Remember, this is Cornelius Fudge we are talking about. He wanted to find an excuse to silence Harry. Umbridge sent 2 dementors to Privet Drive so that Harry would be forced to use magic in self-defence. Fudge cared more about his position than the safety of others.
Harry was still unqualified at that point, not having taken his OWLs yet. I think that's the common factor. If someone who isn't yet a full wizard does something bad enough, snapping their wand is on the table. If they're a fully qualified wizard, it's unthinkable. Does it make sense? No, but neither do taboos about nudity or gender markers. They're social constructs. In the Victorian era, pink was considered a very masculine color, associated with baby boys, and it was blue that was associated with baby girls. A hundred years later, men would actively avoid anything pink for fear of being associated with weakness or being LGBTQ+. In the wizarding world, taking away a wizard's wand is the harshest of punishments, and snapping it forever is unthinkable. Preventing a child from *becoming* a wizard apparently is not, even if they're almost there. It doesn't make sense to us, because it's not our society so we can see how weird it is.
If I ever went to Hogwarts, I'd probably spend majority of my time just hanging out with Hagrid, and relax at his cozy cottage. Hagrid has become my favourite character from the HP universe. I'd very likely also end up in Hufflepuff 🤣
I join the group who ask, "When he kept werewolf pups under his bed, was it just in wolf phase or was he keeping human children under his bed the rest of the month."
When werewolves mate in wolf form, it creates beautiful and extremely intelligent wolves. I wonder if these cubs are the ones Dumbledore put in the forest.
I wonder if the Ministry of Magic expels a student and prohibits them from using magic (whether they are a pure blood, half blood, or muggle born) how does the expelled student not become an obscures? (Not sure on the correct spelling)
My assumption would be almost a probation officer situation where they meet use a bit of magic in a controlled environment then back to normal muggle life
The real question is why not just go to another country, buy a wand there and continue living as a normal wizard. As territorial as wizards are trying to cross borders to enforce their laws in another country is the sort of thing that would start an actual magical war. The sort of thing that would have one ministry teleporting magic WMDs into the other's capital.
Because when those laws were created. The wizarding world was starting to hide from the muggle world. That said, children are notoriously bad decision makers. Coupled with the fact that performing magic where muggles can notice, witch hunts and/or death usually follow. All that tied together, I can only conclude that the wizarding world out those harsh rules in place to keep themselves safe to some degree. Highly unfair, yes. But so is life.
IMO, underage magic breaking the Statute of Secrecy is considered extremely grave to Wizardkind safety. It's non intentional thus non prosecutable (logically) yet revealing to Muggles. A killing can be swept under the rug. The SoS being broken is a bother to several Ministry departments and solely creates blocage.
Because iit can easily be ignored if one is of the "right" family and hence lives in a manor with 5+ Magic users. Power keeps Power, whenever it can increases it, and shi-ite on everybody else. Always.
Goodness gracious 16 inches over a foot and 4 inches long that's insanely huge it makes me laugh how his umbrella was able to contain such a fucking massive beast of a wand
I think it has to do with the OWL's. Hagred was in his 3rd year, Newt was in his 6th year, Harry was just about to begin his 5th year when he was told that Ministry Wizards would be coming to destroy his wand.
Ah, Hagrid's wand! A poignant example of the complexities in wizarding law and prejudice. It's tragic how his gentle giant nature clashed with the rigid rules of the Ministry. But isn't it fascinating how it reflects broader themes of discrimination and the struggle for acceptance in the magical world? Dumbledore's support for him despite this setback truly shows the power of loyalty and friendship.
I always wondered if Dumbledore secretly tutored Hagrid as a student after his expulsion and that's how he kept his wand as an umbrella and can clearly cast complex spells.
One thing I think is funny is that while yes, the wand matched with the witch/wizard would be able to tell you a bit about them, nobody has EVER used that in that way. Like nobody has every identified how someone would be/act just on their wand.
That means Hagrid was allowed to use magic when he faced the Aurors Umbridge brought, but he still didn't use magic against them. Probably because he knew the real reason they snapped his wand and didn't want to gove the ministry any more reasons than they thought they already had.
I have a theory that its more he had his wand broken because they suspect Hagrid of raising the basilisk but were simply unable to find the chamber and be rid of the beast. No wand = presumably no control over deadly beast. He had a history of raising creatures and they would be able to disern what killed myrtle or at least what Riddle told them.
Imagine waking up from a exquisite nap, just to hear, "Rubius Hagrid's first wand was rather bendy, 16 inches long" with a grin faced Hagrid staring right at you..
There is a zero percent chance his wand was snapped, or at least remained snapped. Dumbledore had to have either saved it or repaired it with his Elder Wand. Even if the pieces were put into the umbrella, broken wands can’t do any magic in any controlled way. Wands that are fully snapped can’t do magic whatsoever, at least not more than a regular stick can. Hagrid performs perfectly competent, powerful, and controlled magic through his umbrella, so whatever is in the umbrella cannot possibly be the pieces of Hagrid’s wand. It absolutely must be his fully intact wand.
I figure after the Battle of Hogwarts that Kingsley Shacklebolt as interim Minister of Magic would grant Hagrid a few things; First, a new wand because he can't use his old one in public, and perhaps because the Second Wizarding War changed him as it did all others. I suggest a Chestnut wand with unicorn hair core, 18" long: for working with beasties, a sense of justice, and a strong bond with Hagrid. Length due to a growth in Hagrid's kindness and compassion. (was 16" before). Second, acceptance back at Hogwarts for madrigal learning of his choice, carefully guided by headmistress Minerva McGonagall. Third, Hagrid's entire legal and imprisonment records expunged. I think that's enough to be going on with.
it’s only natural as it was confirmed that he wasn’t responsible for the death that he was accused of in the first place…they had to retry then exonerate him allowing him to be educated legally again
He never passed his owls, so he didn't have the status to use magic. Now using magic is probably a low level crime for him but it would still be a crime. Much like driving without a license or practicing medicine without a license.
Idea for a TV show...just hagrid working at hogwarts...like all the dangerous things he has to do in the forbidden forest or when he has to go and find his brother...I feel this could also be more of a comedy if they can keep is west country accent and personality!
I've always thought that surely he can just go buy another wand, I refuse to believe that wizards only ever have a single wand for their entire life, just for accidently breaking them, losing them, wanting to 'upgrade' them. You buy a wand before you go to school, and you dont have to show that you are going to a school to purchase one, so its not like kids can't have them, and do wands shops really have a list of who and who can't have a wand legally.
The wand being snapped just seems to be part of the expulsion from Hogwarts, seeing how Harry's wand was facing the same fate in OotP. Newt's wand wasn't destroyed because he had already passed his OWLs, which is apparently seen as the threshold to allow some to stay within the wizarding community. Not allowing Hagrid to have his wand formally restored after he was cleared of all charges however might have been because of his heritage.
I think one reason Hagrid's wand was snapped, or perhaps the excuse given, was his age. Hagrid was only in his third year, so he really wouldn't know how to use a wand properly, and could potentially do a lot of accidental damage. He was *not* a wizard, only a student, so there was an opportunity to prevent a(n allegedly) dangerous person from ever becoming a wizard. His alleged crime was severe enough to warrant (or be presented as warranting) not being allowed to proceed. Newt was 16, already past his OWLs and therefore already a fully qualified wizard - remember, not all wizards stay on to take NEWT level classes, and those who leave after their fifth year are full wizards. It was too late to put the genie back in the bottle in his case, although they could take steps that would keep him out of the most prestigious and highest-ranking positions in society, by keeping him from any NEWTs. In wizarding society, a wizard without a wand is helpless. Taking away their wand would be like stripping them naked and chopping their hands and feet off. It's just unthinkable for most. And given how little non-magical education most wizards get, expecting them to go live as a Muggle would be both unsuccessful and endanger the masquerade, the Statute of Secrecy.
When some of the students were likely to have their parents not let them return to Hogwarts because they questioned Harry Potter and dumbledore's judgment, it was implied that they would keep them out of Hogwarts and homeschool them instead. So if he is expelled from Hogwarts, that still would not be reason enough to snap his wand in half. Also why couldn't he just go back to the one store and get another one?
Now it's important to note that Harry's wand would almost suffer the same fate as Hagrid's after he used the Patronus Charm to protect his cousin Dudley from being kissed by a Dementor, for the crime of Underage Magic, a "crime" Harry did commit, but Dumbledore was successful in convincing the Wizengamot that Harry purely acted out of defensive reasons, saving someone from a horrible fate. When I take the tons of letters Harry received until the Order Of The Phoenix brought him to their HQ, they seem very aware of this being a logical way to go and they urged Harry NOT to surrender his wand. However it's very clear that if Harry and Dumbledore lost the case, Harry's wand would have been snapped or otherwise be destroyed. The movies may not fully cover that, but the novel does. Now, I wonder since Newt appears to have escaped this fate, all three have in common that they were expelled or in Harry's case, almost expelled, but Harry's wand would have been snapped had the expulsion come through. Now Harry is NOT a half giant, but Harry was of course a threat to Fudge's career and Fudge might have realized that if Harry kept his wand that Dumbledore would see to it that Harry knew how to use it properly, so likely "corruption" may be what Harry's and Hagrid's cases had in common. Not to mention that Harry's crime should have lead to clearance from the start as he only acted in defense (and fortunately Dumbledore managed to enforce that outcome), and in Hagrid's case he didn't even commit the crime at all, but nobody (except for Dumbledore) appeared to keep the thought in mind that the real culprit was actually trying to lay off the blame to someone else and someone who's an easy target due to prejudice (we know that Dumbledore had this idea, since Riddle already stated himself that Dumbledore kept an annoyingly close eye on him since that particular incident).
I think the factor is newt had passed his owls and the other two hadn't. Remember years six and seven are optional education in the wizarding world. So getting expelled in those years still means you completed the mandatory education.
The problem is that JK does not appear to have constructed a solid and logic magical law system. She states that when children are expeled from Hogward and do not get to graduate they get banned to practice magic and their Wands are snaped. However most recently it was stated that forbid Children from practice magic is dangerous and maybe letal for Children.
The ministry was going to destroy harrys wand when he was told he was expelled for using underage magic. This is standard practice for a witch or wizard who is expelled from school before they turn 17
The thing I don't see people taking in to account for Newt vs Hargrid is that a Jarvey is a class XXX creature where as an Acromantula is a XXXXX known wizard killer and WAY more dangerous. it;s like "oh you brought a snake to school" vs "oh you brought a TIGER to school." They are two very different things.
I can totally believe some prejudice was involved in Hagrid's case, but also, Harry is threatened with having his wand destroyed after performing underage magic in the muggle world, which is way less intense than having a murder accusation over you, even if it was durting the tie Fudge tried to "cancel" Harry. I think maybe something about not being fully trained. For Newt, he would have already taken his OWL's, which appears to be sufficient to call yourself a trained Wizard. Some jobs only require OWL grades and Fred and George debate leaving without taking any NEWT's (which they eventually end up doing) and even if they did get the funding for the joke shop from Harry, you'd think they would have known if there would be any problems for example with getting permits and such, if they only had OWL's.
I always thought that the students who had not passed OWLS and were expelled got their wands snapped. But anyone who is qualified was safe from that punishment.
Tom Riddle fooled the ministry of magic as a young student. The ministry can … read your thoughts like Snape did with Potter. Or, with a device like dumbledor had. Seems odd the ministry doesn’t have a system to detect lies beyond … eye witnesses (who can also lie). The movies show issues with this on 4 separate occasions. Basically every single scene in a court setting. Feels like a pretty basic thing to get wrong. Like how they struggle to communicate with magic as effectively as a telephone would be (in the 1990s).
Tbh there is a big difference between newt and hagrid, newt had already passed his o.w.l, meaning he was a qualified wizard, before he was expelled, hagrid was not, any student what hasn't passed their owls, would have their wand snapped
Because of this video, my new head canon is Riddle framed Hagrid because if a half giant was able to graduate from Hogwarts, he’d be too powerful and could possibly stop Voldemort before his rise to power. Thank you!
Nah. But riddle was always a coward, so he did it on the pure change of what you wrote. Hagrid, as far as we know, was never talented, still, a literal tank, wielding a wand with protective and revival spells, and a huge goblin made say Hammer? Stop THAT without AK or at least 10 to 1 odds, I dare you. NO danger for truly smart people like voldy, but his minions would have been browned. On the lower ends in addition to their brown nosing. :*) 😂
If you are convicted of dangerous driving your license can be suspended for a time, if you are kicked out of driving school you are not allowed to drive period. Hagrid was expelled, he wasn't fully trained and was forbidden from learning why would he have been allowed to keep the wand.
His Wand was snapped because of his age … he couldn’t legally practice magic outside of school so the destroyed his wand … Dumbledore made the deal to keep him in with the headmaster not the minister so in the eyes of the ministry allowing him to keep the wand would be negligent
But I think newt would have counted as a qualified wizard. He’d sat is OWLs, and NEWTs are more of an extra, Fred and George didn’t get their wands taken for example.
This is a difficult thing to understand. A Wizard that is imprisoned can be rehabilitated, but a wizard that doesn't get proper training in magic shouldn't have a wand. Newt had a different accusation than Hagrid Newt wasn't part of a murder and yes Giants have a bad stereotype that is hard to look past as a wizard.
The wizard world sucks. There’s nothing magical about a world that’s supposed to be different from the “real” world being exactly the same as the real world
The whole "magic" part though. They're just a sub group of humans with extraordinary powers and culture. They assemble to protect themselves FROM other humans. They never set out to be better. People are the full range of crappy to good. So are wizards.
The whole "school where you live and get sorted into competing houses" is quite different to most peoples reality. I was blown away when I heard that this is actually how some British schools work. Also I think it is super interesting to see a magic society being in the process of getting left behind by ever evolving technological advancement. Like 400 years ago, they must have been so far ahead. Since then they even seem to have regressed, since all the cool stuff, like the mirror, the veil, the pensieve, the 3 deathly hallows, and even the 3 unforgivable curses are not even completely understood by modern wizards (it was proposed that all of that way invented by the same people). The Hogwarts hat is also unique, and the chamber of the secrets is hidden in a way that only people who were intended to find it found it. The only somewhat recent examples of impressive magic is the philosopher stone and the marauders map. The later might have be a repurposed page of ancient magical paper from a specific magical book.
Now I'm starting to wonder if giants can fly on broomsticks. Maybe they could make a broom out of a tree, although I question if they are too heavy to successfully to lift off.
The wand just signifies one is technically qualified to do magic. It's more like a driver's license or professional certification or college diploma. You may not be able to drive while in prison but when you have served your time your certification is still valid. Hagrid did not graduate, for fair reasons or not. He does not have the "legal" qualifications for wand ownership. Now this isn't perfect, because Harry & Ron both had wands and they didn't graduate. Maybe because they were aurors they got special waivers or maybe because they never got officially "kicked out" of school they could keep their wands. But getting expelled from school does not equate to going to jail.
Well I've always thought maybe someone dying was the final straw the fact that Tom riddle knew to blame Hagrid for murtles death proves that Dumbledore knew about the beasts Hagrid was raising and probably gave him plenty of warnings about the dangers of the beasts he was raising someone dies and Dumbledore is left with no choice but to expell Hagrid and snap his wand but parts of his wand was put in his umbrella well I believe Dumbledore figured something wasn't right and knew Hagrid most likely was innocent so he gave Hagrid the pieces of his wand and probably told him to put it in the umbrella because that seems to be a bit advanced for Hagrid considering he didn't make it past his third year I believe Dumbledore was helping him and gave him a job at hogwarts as the grounds keeper to basically apologize for him being expelled

Before the reveal of Hagrid’s heritage I thought he was just a straight up giant.
I thought Hagrid talked about his Mum lifting his Dad up and sitting him on the fireplace or a shelf or something?
Harry wasn't half-giant, and use of magic in the presence of a muggle is generally lesser offense, than causing someone's death.
I assumed the wand snapping had to do with his age. Newt would have completed his owls and thus was not required to attend a magical school anymore, while Hagrid hadn't .
Could have asked the ghost girl lol
Maybe Dumbledore did ask her. That's why he looks out for Rubeus.
Thanks for the explanation... bigotry is the real reason NOT the severity of the crime.
And this actually explain why Newt Scamander, was allowed to keep his wand, as he was expelled much later in his education than Hagrid.
he literally said he was allowed to keep his wand thanks to being of-age, whereas Hagrid wasn’t
Fudge cared more about his position than the safety of others.
if he had been convicted in the sham trial it would have been done
@@CritterKeeper01 they make exceptions for situations that warrant it thus Harry avoided being persecuted…sorry, prosecuted for using his magic
Always a good day when a video about Haggord drops

Ministry tries to snap the wand: It's too bendy/flexible to snap.
That would’ve really bend them out of shape now, wouldn’t it?
If I ever went to Hogwarts, I'd probably spend majority of my time just hanging out with Hagrid, and relax at his cozy cottage.
Hagrid has become my favourite character from the HP universe. I'd very likely also end up in Hufflepuff 🤣
I join the group who ask, "When he kept werewolf pups under his bed, was it just in wolf phase or was he keeping human children under his bed the rest of the month."
Werewolf pups are just larger, beautiful and highly intelligent wolf pups, from what ive read. they just grow into wolves.
Werewolf pups are the offspring of two werewolves mating
When werewolves mate in wolf form, it creates beautiful and extremely intelligent wolves. I wonder if these cubs are the ones Dumbledore put in the forest.
All that aside, there are worse places to grow up lol
@@zachpayton1079 Dumbledore put wolf pups n the forest?
Great video!!!! Hagrid is the GOAT
I love this channel ❤ i get so intrigued with the lore and the possibilities 🙌🏼
what is stopping Haggord at a later date from buying a new wand? he could have even ordered one from overseas as well
You still need a license to use a wand.
@@barbiquearea Damn Brits and their licenses!
"oi, oi, you got a loicense for that, sunshoine?"

legally barred as per his sentence…
Don’t know if I’d trust a wand from wish.spell I hear they have bad reviews.
Omg that pic baby bearded Hagrid LOL
I thought it was as he was under 15 and had not completed his OWLs yet. All the others had completed them and proven they could control their magic.
It was racism against a half breed.
Wizards always were quite racist towards half-human hybrids, so unsurprisingly Hagrid was punished, despite insufficient evidence.
I think the rason Hagrid´s wand was snapped but Newt´s wasn´t is that Hagrid didn´t take his OWL exam yet.
underage vs. of age
Why is it underaged magic is usually treated harsher than literal murder?
Pretty sus and ridiculous....
Because iit can easily be ignored if one is of the "right" family and hence lives in a manor with 5+ Magic users.
Power keeps Power, whenever it can increases it, and shi-ite on everybody else.
Always.
Why is an instant painless death spell considered unforgivable but burning someone alive with a fire spell is totally acceptable?
Goodness gracious 16 inches over a foot and 4 inches long that's insanely huge it makes me laugh how his umbrella was able to contain such a fucking massive beast of a wand
16 inches of Hagrid

Awesome video. RIP Mr. Coltrane.
A Very Good Video 👍🏻
A lot of people will not know who Myrtle warren is so basically she is moaning Myrtle
Hagrid's wand was snapped, because of the wizarding community's prejudice against giants.
no, it was snapped because he was expelled and barred from using magic
They snapped his wand to assert dominance.
Racism towards giants would be the logical reason.
Cool video
Non wizards can't have wands. They might have applied that logic to him once he was "no longer a wizard".
It absolutely must be his fully intact wand.
it was snapped, but within the umbrella it being mended is hidden
@@bostonrailfan2427or and hear me out dumbledore transfigured it to look like an umbrella
@@Allantitan that makes sense too…especially after mending it
“The significant length of his wand is representative of his large…” did not know where you were going to go with that one 🤣
I think Hagrid should do some Wizard homeschooling.
At a couple of points it sounded like you were hagrids lawyer and I was the judge and you were convincing me he’s not guilty
16 inches long bendy oak wand, now you know why Myrtle was moaning.
I figure after the Battle of Hogwarts that Kingsley Shacklebolt as interim Minister of Magic would grant Hagrid a few things;
First, a new wand because he can't use his old one in public, and perhaps because the Second Wizarding War changed him as it did all others.
Oh yes, an award for services to the school, and 200 points to his house, Gryffindor.
it’s only natural as it was confirmed that he wasn’t responsible for the death that he was accused of in the first place…they had to retry then exonerate him allowing him to be educated legally again
Why Hagrid never got a wand after being proven innocent after Chamber of Secrets is one of the bigger holes in the series.
Hagrids father was a man of taste.
5:37 "who was only a few years older at the time"
The real life equivalent of Hagrid with a full wizarding education would be Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson having the intellect of Roger Penrose.
It would have been awesome if the movie portrayed Grawp during the battle of Hogwarts
I just realized Harry didn't use the elder wand to fix Hagrid's makeshift umbrella wand
Imagine fully powered auror Hagrid vs Voldemort.
I have always compared hagrid to my grandpa because of the striking resemblence and comparable personality
I would love a miniseries all about Hagrid.
I am a noob aren't werewolf cubs human beings?
no…they’re regular wolves but with more intelligence
Hagrid's old man was a F R E A K! 😅 dude likes 'em big is an understatement..
Crawl in and rub one out in the "cave" like Gollum
Dude what is that music in this video?? I can’t figure it out..😅
sad we lost Bobby Coltraine. watching him for 30 years great actor
Hayride got a raw deal.
Thank you!
Oh oohhh this is legit!!
0:18 ................i'm sure it did and i'm sure you can 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They solved this in chamber of secrets Tom thought he did it and he got expelled but dumledore asked to let him stay as a groundskeeper
How big would be the maximum size of a giant’s wand?
Maybe like the size of a broom?
@@jaaaszczomb maybe
Now I'm starting to wonder if giants can fly on broomsticks. Maybe they could make a broom out of a tree, although I question if they are too heavy to successfully to lift off.
proportional to the size of their hand
Aren't werewolf cubs just children afflicted with lycanthropy? Like if Remus Lupin was a werewolf cub when he was 4, would that not be a werewolf cub?
It's stupid how they'll break his wand but not dangerous criminals which is asking for trouble when they do get out with their main weapon on hand.
