  • The popularity and relevancy of Call of Duty's multiplayer is in possibly the worst state I've ever seen and I feel corrective action must be taken in order to get it back on the right track. In today's video, I share what I feel are some of the biggest factors contributing to the rapid decline of multiplayer and how I'd like to see them corrected. What do you think of the current trajectory of CoD's multiplayer?

Can we talk about how attrocious the menu system is. They've been lazy and keep using it for the past 3 years. Currently, there are 8 menu tabs, each with there own cluttered submenus. I actually had to look up a guide to find how to join a clan because i didn't see the "social" button in the top right. Why do they charge us for a blueprint with subpar attachments and expect us to use that setup especially when it can’t compete with the meta weapons? It absolutely makes no sense to me. I will agree that lobbies sticking together after games was like a trademark that only call of duty had for a long time and when they removed that it really felt like the game just became stale because if you lost to a good player 1 game and you wanted to stick in the lobby and try and get revenge the next game. Now you can’t or you found a cool bunch of guys with mic’s and everyone just stayed in the lobby and all played with and against each other for hours that was really what the good old days of cod were about not the maps or the genre or the setting of the game. Everyone agrees that lobbies disband and it sucks, but no one asks why. No it isn't SBMM as the older CoDs had it and the lobbies didn't disband(and btw the reason that made it feel that wasn't no SBMM at all was the fact that 1 it was less strict and 2 the SBMM would only kick in if you quit the lobby after the matches and try to find a new one). Disbanding lobbies is a byproduct of Quick Play(because when ppl are searching for multiple different modes at the same time you can't keep them together however the lobbies shouldn't disband if we're talking about 24/7 playlists or moshpits). Fuck it this is why I'm gonna get my hands dirty and become a game developer in the near future

  • @GhillieMaster
    @GhillieMaster 2 года назад +681

The game is no longer made for player enjoyment. It is made solely to cater to new players to the point that they won’t quit the game, in hopes that they purchase a couple of skins, and by then they already got $40 or so more out of that player than they would’ve had before, so they profit.

"Games-as-chores"... Games today are built saying "better keep playing so that way you unlock everything on time, or else you're going to be worse than everyone else" while hiding the fact that even if you do improve, you're going to be put into a lobby where you can only improve so much, where once a 6KD meant you were a badass, now a 2KD means you're a badass, but you're sweating your ass off. I really hope they start to focus on quality content rather than quantity. Perfect example: Counter-Strike 1.6. nobody played for any sort of gain, except for whenever you joined a server you frequented, you felt like part of a community or that community may know that you were going to stomp them lol. The fact that people used to have "(no mic)" next to their usernames speaks volume to the community of these quality games

One thing: Activision's SBMM is like RUclips removing the dislike button. It makes it look like it's easy for good players playing the game, and it makes bad players look good at playing the game. So as far as footage/content creators, it's difficult for good players (like an ideal 'today's FaZe') to be recognised because they could be bad. Same with a video having a lot of likes; it doesn't necessarily mean it was good (it could have 100k likes but 1M dislikes) but you can't see dislikes like you can't compare skill in MP as of 2019-.

    • @NFrmrsNFD

As someone who quit playing 1 year ago after putting 30 days into every title for 11 years, it was the strict matchmaking. You had 1 good game which would lead to getting dumpstered on for 3 games. As a solo player, it just wasn’t fun to play anymore. The other thing was when I was grinding for dark matter and some of the challenges were bugged and halted progress. At that point, I had no reason to play. It just wasn’t fun. I did the camo grind and got Damascus, I think the layout of the maps and them adding doors is what encouraged camping, and all that some of the maps were just way too bug for 6v6.
Regarding Destiny, is it actually that fun? My cousin was telling me about it and I downloaded it and played like the first 30-45 minutes of it and it felt a bit slow paced and the mechanics felt a bit aged since it’s a 4.25 year old game. I’ve recently been plying apex a lot cuz I like grinding so their ranked system for BR and their arenas mode has me hooked but I guess that is still in the same genre of call of duty. Activision, Raven, Treyarch and SHG need to stop focusing on Warzone. WZ was great as MW’s BR mode, which it was made to be. Its peak was during S6 of Mw and it was really fun then.
Then, the bs crossover happened. No one asked for that. It ruined everything. It was those turds just shafting Mw, its players and Infinity Ward. IW helped saved the franchise and they got treated like dirt. Don’t know what I mean? Think about it. Vanguard and CW were constantly advertised in MW. MW players did not want to buy them. They changed WZ just to help make those CoDs look relevant. That never should have happened.
If proper thought was put behind CW instead of just copying MW and WZ.they could have made the game properly. As an example, look at Zombies. Having loadouts and spawning in with one weapon (of ur choice - so just choose the best gun) isn’t fun. Zombies is meant to have an element of RNG & u r meant to hit the mystery box. Gunsmith added pretty much nothing valuable to the mode. If they made it more akin to BO3 Zombies, it might have succeeded. Vanguard Zombies has flopped.

However, ppl should have boycott CW. If I had that game I would be angry with the lack of content that it’s zombies mode has but I didn’t buy it bc that time period sucks, the game was a downgrade graphically, 150 health/slow ttk is horrible (didn’t want that again after BO4), it integrated with WZ (which was awful & ruined the mode), Treyarch couldn’t be trusted after BO4 (they can’t make good games anymore it seems) and they treated MW like slop (whether that was mainly Activision or Treyarch as well).

(2) Dev studios don't share the same views when it comes to the core gameplay fundamentals such as TTK, map design, respawn logic, weapon balance/tuning, etc. which leads to an extremely divided fan base that gets even more divided every year, and a competitive scene that is in complete shambles ... not sure how they can turn this around, feels like we have reached a point of no return, especially now that WZ is clearly their main focus

I think another very important factor leading to the continual burnout of the franchise among the community is the current development cycle and releasing an installment every year, without giving the current game enough time to breathe and have some form of longevity that make the items you earn or purchase relatively a waste of time, even when a lot of the current life cycle of CoD games are focused on getting rid of the plethora of bugs and glitches that hinder the individual experience.
Especially when a new CoD game comes out and a majority of the player-base shifts to the new game, leaving the previous installment more empty and less supported over the long term. I believe, at the very least, giving every game 2 years of primary focus before releasing another installment would be a good start to alleviating some of the current issues that plague the franchise, which would also have the effect of doubling the development cycle so that more time, effort, and possibly more innovation would be spent on each project.
But unfortunately, I severely doubt that Activision would do anything that would have even a remote possibility of hindering quarterly profits for their shareholders.

Used to buy the game at midnight every year. Stopped cold turkey when they went crazy with the SBMM and "retention based matchmaking". Literally giving you noob lobbies when you get frustrated. It's dumb as hell and leads to a very formulaic repetitive experience. The magic of the old CoDs is that they were entirely random and that gave it a lot of replayability.
There's zero fun in getting better at the game now. I remember getting absolutely ass-blasted in MW2 when I first started and slowly working my way to a nuke. That personal progression was a ton of fun. Now literal pro players aren't breaking a 2 KD due to SBMM.
They've dumbed down the maps and nearly randomized as much as humanly possible to let lesser skilled players win engagements more often. God this series is so tragic because I really liked the gameplay and more casual vibe. I'll play Halo Infinite, Overwatch, and Valorant if I want to play competitively. NOT COD PUBLIC LOBBIES!

Or at least they did since Vanguard isn't selling to anybody cause it's trash... it's a clone of CoD MW2019 with guns that become way more OP but take 10 times more to level up, a worse theme, even more cheesy gameplay and zero reasons to buy it if you own MW2019 (like I do)... there's a reason they made the MW2019 multiplayer mode crash and be unplayable with one of their updates for Vanguard... they wanted to force players to buy that shit... and some complete monkey brains did buy it...
I only play Warzone when my friends force me to, I can't play CoD anymore... nowadays I play Rainbow Six Siege and Apex Legends but the whole toxicity of competitive games has turned me to games that are either co-op against the AI (like the Division 2 or Borderlands 3 etc) and this year I bought FIFA again after last playing in 2019 since they finally fixed that shit and it's playable and I'm back on that train (used to be a 0.1% top player world-wide at FIFA back in 2014 and 2015... so I naturally play A LOT of football on PS but nowadays I just beat the ever-living shit out of the AI on the highest difficulty in Career mode)

I remember back in the day when MW3 was about to launch, some people saying that is the same thing every year etc, but at the very least it had some difference. The menu was different, the guns felt different, even the fucking mute button was different between Treyarch/IW. Now the game is all the same, menus are the same, maps are similar in color and design, guns are all the same, even the create a class is the same.
I get it, maybe this continuity sounds like a good thing, but for a yearly title to be the same every year? No way. If you're lauching yearly, you should 100% change stuff around, even if some changes are bad, at least there's a difference between games. Or else launch one game and stick with it for years, which is obviously the right thing and they will never do it

I came back to CoD for the first time since Black Ops 1 with MW2019 having played since CoD1 at this point. It felt like a breath of fresh air with the upgraded engine, lovely animations and gun play and grounded campaign and I bought some ingame packs from the store as it felt good to support and play. Then I kept wondering why I kept doing well one game then had some awful games, then Cold War came out and although Zombies was good, MP wasn't, then we get cw, mp feeling marginally better than CW (engine wise), but zombies being crap. Yeah I actuially dislike Vanguard more than CW and would rather play MW19 than either of the two. I'm not even a great player (due to being old and rusty at fps games) and am actually regarded as casual as I work during the week and don't get much time to play, SBMM still punishes me, why do Activision think that is a good gameplay design? Also spawning adds to the random deaths even more, yet it feels intentional, pushing me away.
Originally I lasted from 2003-2010, I am not gonna last 7 years this time around. Also unlike MW2019, I've not been recommending these last 2 CoD games, we'll have to see what CoD 22 brings to the table (I doubt it'll bring much I'm afraid).
For long tyerm retention they should have just supported MW2019 for 3 years, added CW Zombies as paid DLC (£15?), added some of the the CW guns and some maps into MW19, changed MW19's Ghost perk, added Ninja, then scrapped Vanguard enitrely (mayube adding a couple of the guns into MW). Next COD game would've had more hype and I would have tried pushing MW19 at more of my friends due to the value of the package. Let's face it, Activision is run by clueless short-term thinking suits who are actually shit at their job, not by people who really understand the gaming business, pretty much like the UK government when it comes to understanding life.

    How COD multiplayer can succeed:
1.) Do the bare minimum market research. Offer a free skin for completing a survey. What era do players want to see? What do they love about the game? What do they hate?
2.) Actually listen and make changes accordingly.
3.) Create a Ranked mode with transparent ranking and remove SBMM from casual play. I actually don't hate SBMM because playing with good people makes you better, but sometimes you just want a chill game, or want to try new setups, or want to complete camo challenges without wrecking your stats.
4.) Don't disband lobbies. I've never heard of anyone who prefers this.
5.) Map voting. Never heard opposition to this.
6.) Reduce the camo challenge grind. No one really wants to play 1000 matches on Shipment, and NO ONE wants to get 100 mounted kills or 100 hold your breath kills with every weapon, NO ONE.

I think there's a problem with the overall gameplay itself, Call of duty has mastered the casual multiplayer arcade shooter formula, and that has worked amazingly for a long time, however; People begin to lose interest. Think back on games like Counter-Strike 1.6, there was no progression, there was nothing in the way of levels or anything to that nature. People played it because it was enjoyable and very well detail oriented and community-based. The people you would play with/against in a server would be people that you would start to know and might become silent rivals, like when you go to a server to play gun game you would see people that also join that server frequently and know that you're going to have a challenge. The only reward that you would get, would be the end of the round saying you're the winner, or having the announcer say "M-M-M-M-MONSTER KILL!" The best games we've had were simple but memorable. Your goal was to have a good time, not to get everything unlocked. Even if there were things to be unlocked, they felt like the pregame, and everything afterwards where you just had fun was the real game. I feel like developers/publishers need to focus on the quality of a game instead of games-as-chores to stay relevant.

It just starts to feel like a grind. In older CODs when I would get a weaker lobby, it was a great time to work on leveling weaker guns. Now I either stick with my best builds or get my ass kicked, there's no margin for goofing around.

Grinding out battle pass tiers is exhausting, I still don't quite understand how the xp for that works, tie it to something, tie it to normal xp so if you have really good games, you get more xp and level up faster and get through the battle pass faster, battle pass xp is a mystery to me. Disbanding lobbies is huge, I use to get on with friends and we would lobby surf until we found a good one and then we stayed in it all night and competed with the other team and developed rivalries with them. It made TDM, demolition, search games so much more fulfilling when you've played with the same group all night.
Sledgehammer put in the game mode Armageddon, I played through most of December and I still don't understand how that game mode works. Was it glorified TDM? Was it Team Defender? Having to go to level 70 and grind these guns that aren't good until like level 60 is exhausting. Currently there is double xp but it still feels so slow. Sbmm doesn't help keep players playing the game. The reason MW19 was so good and people kept playing was the fact that loot boxes were gone. We got free maps and guns. I had been playing cod multiplayer since cod4, this is the 1st year where I’ve stopped playing fully. I can’t bring myself to play Vanguard, there’s no fun and boredom sets in really fast

My main issue with this game is the connection issues. Grinding aimlessly doesn't bother me. Moonwalking across the map is not enjoyable. The worse part was I got 2 weeks of amazing connection only to divert right back to worse than day 1 connection.
I also dislike the disbanding lobbies

Can you even blame people for not playing? Imagine sweating out this game after a long day at school or work, you want to relax not put maximum effort into a game that forces you to play a certain way through matchmaking and having a stale meta. There should be a casual playlist purely focused on connection and a seperate competitive playlist that is more rewarding.

Must haves for every COD. Theater mode. Custom Emblem creater. No disbanding lobbies. SBMM is a choice. Show all players stats, favorite weapon, 6 clips from theater mode like in BO1. Kill cams show class setup and attachments. No party chat in Search and Destroy. Wager matches. Unlock calling cards and emblems for actual cool challenges like 1000x tomahawk kills ect not just from leveling up

Weapon camouflages also take forever now too. I remember when it only took a reasonable amount of time to complete weapon camouflages but now it’s ridiculous how long it takes to complete them.

Besides the problems associated with Disbanding Lobbies you mentioned, it has also resulted in that there is no longer any MAP VOTING. We've therefore also lost the Self-Regulating system that dictated the frequency/prevalence of the respective maps, where the "Cream" rose to the top. With the current system, eg. more maps at launch, isn't necessarily a good thing if it means that players will be forced to play more matches on bad maps, before they'll get the chance to play a match on good map!

I totally feel exhausting due to these things that is I am personally experiencing as a COD gamer, SBMM is one of the main’s one but recently I have been getting mostly joined in game session like 80% of the time and I always join the losing teams, then after the same thing. Also recently the maps like Decoy and Oasis I am getting server disconnected specially on Blitz modes. My KD and my W/L dropped significantly because of joined in sessions. The other annoying thing about this game is launchers camo glitch, I worked days for launchers and I progressed some of it and mostly are just glitched, my operators all are maxed out but the black outfit for Barbarians squad are locked as a result of a weird glitch. Most players on lobbies are muted and whenever I try to unmute them it does not work. This game is totally feel a recycled beta game!!!!

Sledgehammer that’s the number 1 problem… I doubt the devs even play the game
