Back in the 80s I thought Don Johnson's linen suits were the real deal. All those pastel colours and unconstructed style. Complete with no socks and loafers....those were the days..
I was in high school in Los Angeles when the show was in its prime. I got a job after school and I would spend my paycheck buying clothes in the "Miami Vice" style. I joined the military right after graduating. I arrived to my first duty station in Germany in the middle of the winter and I realized that all I had was a bunch of white blazers, pastel t-shirts, thin pants, and loafers with no socks. I darn near froze my butt off! I wore my uniform clothes as much as I was allowed until I could purchase a whole new wardrobe. Man I loved the late 80's, early 90's and Miami Vice!
I watched it for the first time a couple of months ago and I have to say I was disappointed. Not what I expected. I love Don Johnson but I enjoyed Nash Bridges much much more than Miami Vice. Miami Vice became boring and repetitive after the first two seasons or so.
Mark, I do too, and I love it. Anybody that doesn't like it can kiss my ass. I went all out with a $1500 white Italian linen suit, tight t-shirts in pink and aqua, and some white Versace espadrilles. I still think it looks sexy as hell.
{Probably a very embarrassing look into my character but here goes} I remember I really got into Miami Vice in my teens, I mean I lived and breathed Miami Vice, had all the episodes on VHS, then replaced them all on DVD later on, had models of the cars like the black Ferrari Daytona and the white Testarossa dotted about in my room, I looked upon Don Johnson as pretty much the ideal man to look up to, to aspire to be and to see as a role model. Slowly but surely I started to adopt some of the style trends that Crocket used to wear, for example before I got hooked on the TV series I used to wear Sneakers, tracksuit bottoms and a sporty T-Shirt with a crew cut hairstyle (Typical fashion trend that most teens in the London area were following), after about season 4 of watching Miami Vice, I was wearing Driving Mocs without socks, Chinos, pale blue or purple high arm T-Shirts (Just wasn't brave enough for the pink), Gold Casio Watch (Gold steel version of the F91W) side parted and grew my hair out Don style. My music taste changed, it was more 80's than the (then) current 90's. The only aspects I didn't adopt was the white clothing (Except for a off white blazer I didn't wear much), I preferred dark blue, black or grey. My parents only realised I had a problem when I kept looking at black 2 seater convertible cars (Like the Mazda MX5) on Exchange & Mart 'Ebay of the day' and asking them if we could go to Miami instead of Spain for our hols. About 15 years later, long after the fad died out and I moved on. I found a photo of my 17 year old self at Goodwood: Festival of speed. It was proper cringe. I was posing next to a White Lambo Countach, wearing the driving mocs, khaki chinos with turnups that made me look like I was at the beach, bright red t-shirt, the gold Casio watch shining in the sun, the fake wayfarer sunglasses and the hair, oh boy the hair. I was trying way to hard and probably used far to much product and hair dryer which made the hair look more Wham! or Lady Diana than the Don. It was funny to look at but in a way, I did look like a young cosplay Crockett but with big hair but glad I didn't peruse that particular look beyond 18 LOL!
Still sounds like your style looked better than today's fads of skinny jeans and the like. I myself adopt toned-down versions of some of Crockett's clothes when summer arrives.
I am female and I had a female version of dressing like Sonny Crocket back in the 80s at 10 years old. The basket weaved style sandals they were back in the day were fucking awesome. I want to dress like this again, but a more modern version that isn't too cliche 80s.
The backdrop fits seamlessly with their fashion, but I never ever see a video that talks about the architecture and design of Miami Vice. It's 2023 and I'm in the middle of working on putting a video out about just that. FINALLY someone has to do it!
Omg, please do! The architecture in Miami Vice played just as important role as the outfits the two detectives were wearing. I mean, they literally gave the city of Miami this iconic pastel colored buildings and aloft atmosphere. Not to mention the Ocean Drive buildings that were nearly demolished if it weren't for Miami Vice's influence
I always loved the Crocketts style and funny cause I adopted that style especially not wearing belts or socks with vans slip ons or loafers and it was before I even watched Miami Vice being way ahead of my time so when I saw it everything made sense I was connected with the show & started carrying my EDC in a shoulder holster as well, lol. I used to carry appendix which I still do when I carry my back up gun but love the shoulder holster.
Jodie Tillen (sp?)...designer for the first season... It's because of HER, the whole Miami "look" went mainstream across the country, if not the world! Thanks Jodie...I drove my mother nuts, with me not wearing socks and knock off Ray Bans to middle school every day!
Something I never noticed when the show was running is that Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas are the same height. This really enhances their unity as partners.I wonder if it was a conscious decision in the casting.
In the pilot episode script Tubbs is depicted as being younger (mid 20s) than Crockett (35 years old). Both actors though are same age being born in 1949....
Who else but Sonny Crockett could wear pink or lavender pants and look great doing it. Don Johnson and PMT were and still are the best looking duo in TV history
in Miami it is slowly creeping back, with more pressed tight pants, nice Ferragamo loafers, with Versace shirts and t-shirts as well. Plus the jackets are slowly making a comeback too, that is the cheesy part, but still worn. The Ray Bans are still popular, never left.
Inspired by the Miami Vice look, I bought an Italian designer suit. Then I got married and gained weight. After a while, the suit no longer fit. It was good while it lasted.
I managed to get my hands on all seasons of Miami Vice this year and the show itself made me modify my dressing style. Although before it was not too much different, show itself narrowed it down.
I used to really dig this show as a youngster. It was slick and hip, very different from most of the shows at the time. Those boys swag was way high. I'm 42 now and I cannot remember a single episode specifically. But do remember how dope and influential it was.

Old Sonny Crockett's clothes in Miami vice is the best clothes even for car was not bad either that's what makes left my device the best and the baddest show TV show of all time
People asked, how can a police officer afford a fancy car and fancy clothes? It's easy, DRUG BUSTS. Confiscate cars, cash, invest in nice clothes that the drug dealers themselves would wear, and the cars they would flaunt themselves in, and you've got cops who fit the part.
Yeah I believe the cars and clothes were all confiscated from drug busts. Though it made me wonder if anyone would recognize a car from a friend who got arrested or something.
I have an ex friend that modeled his life and mannerisms on Crocket, even down to the way he held his mouth. I never noticed until I watched the series about 4 years ago just how like him he was.

Quite a few people think that Sonny's style is dated. Actually, pop culture dated his clothes. However, you can still wear this style today, just switch it up. Sonny not only wore crew neck tees, but Henleys as well. You don't have to wear a blazer, especially when it's hot. Wear a short sleeve shirt instead. Imitate his color combinations and you got the modern day vice style.
Yeah, it's only a stereotype that arose from cliche 80's "nostalgic imagery". You could rock white pants, pastels and loafers all up and down the street. All the men's styles from that period were really neat, I think.
I preferred the Carrera sunglasses and I actually bought some linen fabric which I brought to my tailor and I made him do some blazer Sonny's style, so I can wear them in the summer too

Well many lovers after that the request would be made by me to those poor guys, at the moment I`m by myself, but my fantasies with you babe are still going strng. pause at 0:03 and look at the gun barrel size difference between the two characters and tell me that Don isn't compensating for small man syndrome...🤣🤣🤣🤣
Actually the real reason why PMT’s gun is smaller is because he doesn’t like guns. It was kinda explained in an interview with the gun instructor on the show that DJ liked going to practice, but PMT was more hesitant. Heck, even in a behind the scenes photo you can see him making a “😖” at the gun he’s holding
@@carliekweenSonny Crockett carried the then brand new & state of the art handgun called the Bren Ten, 10mm auto pistol by Dornaus & Dixon. The gun was specially built by hand for the show & was modified to shoot 45 cal blanks because there were no blanks available for the 10mm auto caliber, as it was a brand new caliber that had just come to the market in 1982 or 1983, before Miami Vice started. The Bren Ten was only in commercial production from 1983 to 1986, when the company, Dornaus & Dixon went bankrupt & out of business.

Agree! I changed my boring style with the pastal colors of miami vice, and I'm actually surprised by the amount of compliments I received from people
Crocket had the best hair of all time
During which time? He had it short to pretty dang long, so to which style are you referring?

John Roberts "cocaine cowboy" was wearing this style of clothes and was modeled in Sonnys wardrobe.

Hi! Just curious, what year and channel did this spot air on?
5:47 says "20 years later...." so we must assume this video aired circa 2005

GTA VC was postcard from the show
Oh my god! darling I`m from that golden age of the 80`s my beloved Donnie, I was in love with you from the very first episode of Miami Vice, so much so. that I made sure that my husband at the time wore the same cloths and colours, that you wore, needless to say that next to you he did`nt look close to your beauty and style, all our friends tried to look like Sonny Crockett, we chicks dressed also alike Trudy and Gina. but let me tell you something else, from than on I made a pact with my ex husband, that whenever we made love, he had to pretend, to be Sonny it worked quite well for a time, after that he said that no longer would be prepared to play along with my fantasie. Well many lovers after that the request would be made by me to those poor guys, at the moment I`m by myself, but my fantasies with you babe are still going strng. I LOVE YOU PASSIONATLELY babe. forgive me guys but that`s the way it his, take it or leave it
Aww that's the way I feel for PMT!!
And how I feel about Rutger Hauer! Although I do think Don Johnson was pretty handsome too!

pause at 0:03 and look at the gun barrel size difference between the two characters and tell me that Don isn't compensating for small man syndrome...🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pure POWER
GIORGIO ARMANI
The Miami Dolphins will raise again with the N.Y. Jets to give the New England Patriots.
These fashion were copied from Japanese 1975 two detective show called Oretachi no Kunshō. those guy are the one wear those linen suit with t-shirt and white shoes, double breast suit. people who loves Miami Vice then should look for this detective drama "Oretachi no Kunshō".
Japan has always been the forefront of fashion. Just they don't host fashion weeks.
The idea of men carrying leather totes and handbags came from Japan. It's there a decade ago and now in 2023 autumn fashion we see houses from Milan, Paris and NY showing it off.
Will have to check that out! Only one photo online and they're both just wearing suits and doesn't look anything like what Crocket and Tubbs wore. Will have to find out how to see the actual show.
The fashion of the fastest F1 driver in AMS2 😂 big diff from ur modern vids

He probably had to spend another 400 bucks to fix his feet lol
The thing is Miami Vice style doesn't look that good when worn by men in Wigan in 1984,
Tbh in the UK everyone is a bit of a chav with sweatpants
I remember wearing the cotton jackets and trousers, t shirts, plimsoles, in Ireland in spring 86.
