Miami Vice being the best crime series of all time is arguable, as I believe that distinction goes to The Wire (and that is a hill I will gladly die on), but what I will agree with you on is the significance of the soundtrack, and how important of a part it played in the show. As a person who did the bulk of my growing up in the 80s and 90s, the only other crime show I can remember where the music and musical artists who were featured on the show were a significant driving force for the amount of eyes that tuned in every week was New York Undercover.
Old series were so great because they had more real-looking actors (not all the plastic and same look that you see nowadays) and because they had a future star in every episode… Also “Charlie’s Angels”, “Fantasy Island” and many more were like that…
Johnson had been making $30,000-35,000 per episode for his role as James "Sonny" Crockett during Vice's first two seasons. With the show a massive hit after the second season, Johnson felt he deserved a pay rise that better reflected the huge success the series had become (the highest-paid television actor at the time, Tom Selleck, was making $250,000 per episode on Magnum P.I.). Universal offered to increase Johnson's pay to $38,500 an episode, but he turned this figure down, reportedly pushing for a wage of up to $100,000 per episode. When this was declined, he walked off the set and refused to return to the production unless he received a level of pay that he deemed more befitting of the show's popularity. Universal began filming what was originally to be the third-season opener, "El Viejo", around Johnson's absence, but this soon proved to be an impossible task. Within a week, the studio had filed a $20 million breach-of-contract suit against Johnson, and issued the star an ultimatum: return to the series or be replaced. The two actors considered as Johnson's successor were Broadway star Treat Williams (Once Upon A Time In America, Deadwood) and Mark Harmon (NCIS), who at that time had recently left the series St. Elsewhere. In either case, Williams or Harmon would not replace Johnson as Crockett, but rather play a new partner for Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, thereby allowing Johnson to return in the future. Just a few hours after Universal filed their lawsuit, and before a definitive replacement could be named, Johnson relented and returned to work for an undisclosed amount of money, ending the holdout.

I’ve rewatched it… the stories were hit and miss. But great nostalgia (if you’re old enough - great history if you’re not), enjoyable music, little gem episodes in each season (Out Where The Buses Don’t Run), post cocaine/pre AIDS parties, cool cars & boats, and great moments with actors before they were stars. Michael Talbott (Detective Switek) and John Diehl (Detective Zito) were scene-stealing funny. Anyone with Sonny’s mouth and body count wouldn’t last long as a cop, but you just don’t care… it’s make believe - good guys make politically incorrect statements and bad guys get shot. Welcome to the 80’s.

He speaks as Mayim Bialik’s father on Big Bang Theory, but really weird hearing a young Teller. That show’s casting had a great ability to recognize future stars.
Helena Bonham Carter playing Sonny's girlfriend Theresa a Miami Doctor from England, up until the point he discovers she is addicted to painkillers due to a botched back operation
That's part of the fun of watching these old series. I find myself saying, "Hey that's, that's . . . ." Then I have to go on Wiki to get their name. Another series for hidden stars is "Law and Order."
Since Glenn Fry did Smuggler’s Blues and “You belong to the city” which were made for the show, let’s put him on the show and he looks like he’s been dabbling still with the nose candy.
- I didn’t see the following people: - Tom Cruise. - Harrison Ford. - Sharon Stone. - Gladys Knight. - Jim Brown. - Chevy Chase. - Kevin Bacon. - Danny Glover. - Jamie Lee Curtis.
Must admit that there are quite a few that I haven't really heard of, but that's probably because they are on US TV. But it was a great way for many up and coming actors and actresses to show what they were capable of and so that will be why many of them are Hollywood household names now.
Anytime James Brown was in front of a camera acting was hilarious. He always seemed like he was waiting for his big moment to say his lines in a school play and I loved every moment of it.

In the episode with Frank Zappa, you didn't mention that the great fighter, Manos de Piedra, Roberto Duran, was also in it.
That is the only time I have heard Teller's voice.
I was thinking the same 💯.
He speaks as Mayim Bialik’s father on Big Bang Theory, but really weird hearing a young Teller. That show’s casting had a great ability to recognize future stars.
WOW I had no idea how many people were on this show This is crazy so many future stars and legends !
I was like “hey it’s Lou diamond Phillips “ and the next one was him lol
Al Bundy before he was married.
I actually remember the episode with Sheena Easton. Great tv back then.
Helena Bonham Carter playing Sonny's girlfriend Theresa a Miami Doctor from England, up until the point he discovers she is addicted to painkillers due to a botched back operation
The Liam neeson bit blew my mind 🤣
That's part of the fun of watching these old series. I find myself saying, "Hey that's, that's . . . ." Then I have to go on Wiki to get their name. Another series for hidden stars is "Law and Order."
Never even realized all these actors were in this awesome video.
Since Glenn Fry did Smuggler’s Blues and “You belong to the city” which were made for the show, let’s put him on the show and he looks like he’s been dabbling still with the nose candy.
I loved the show... so many folks came on.. the music was great!
Phil Collins was in an episode and the Power Station (Duran Duran spin off) were playing on stage
Miles Davis on Miami Vice!!! Also was that Harvey Fierstein at 8:05?
Liam Neeson brought a certain set of skills to the Tv show.
I need to watch this show!!
There's still a bunch of awesome celebrity guest stars who weren't on this list.
I think the list should be a top 100.
Michael delorenzo was on Miami vice too.
Hopefully he'll do another list about the top Stars who appeared before they were actually stars (like Annette Benning and Terry O'Quinn for ex)
Mykelti Williamson...
He did two episodes. The pilot and "Tale of the Goat". Saw him recently in two episodes of the Hawaii Five O reboot.@@randytyson7262
Lee Iacocca was in an episode as well@@corkydukeII5898
- I didn’t see the following people:
- Tom Cruise.
- Harrison Ford.
- Sharon Stone.
- Gladys Knight.
- Jim Brown.
- Chevy Chase.
- Kevin Bacon.
- Danny Glover.
- Jamie Lee Curtis.
The episode with Ted Nugent was one of my favorites. It was wild! Fiona was in another one, "Little Miss Dangerous," which was super dark!
Agreed 👍 Definitely Miami and Little Miss Dangerous were two marvellous episodes.
Great show when i was teen, looking back at clips now some of the acting was amatures night.
I know you missed a couple. Mykelti Williamson ("Bubba") was one.
So many famous people on the show and it's hard to believe that it's been 4 decades since the first episode.
So Miami Vice was the Law and Order of the 80's
Just like Star Trek in the 60's.
Great research work!
3:47 Bill Russell NBA legend ( arguably the GOAT )
Not credited!!!?
Super cool, I'm re-watching this again,
Must admit that there are quite a few that I haven't really heard of, but that's probably because they are on US TV.
But it was a great way for many up and coming actors and actresses to show what they were capable of and so that will be why many of them are Hollywood household names now.
After 40 years, today is the first time I ever heard Teller speak.
Keye luke, clarence Williams III, Laurence fishburne, dr. Haing S. Ngor and Rita Moreno appeared on the show.
Teller speaks! That blew me away!
Miami Vice was't just a séries. It was a Galaxy: There were Only STARS ❤❤❤
Kelly Lynch (Doc in Roadhouse) was a beautiful model on a season 1 episode.
Z przyjemnością oglądałem wszystkie odcinki jak leciały w telewizji. Muszę jeszcze raz obejrzeć.
Anytime James Brown was in front of a camera acting was hilarious. He always seemed like he was waiting for his big moment to say his lines in a school play and I loved every moment of it.
Best tv series ever!
Nice compilation.
I thought I lost my mind but it really is Bill Russell!
