How Pacino has only ever won one Academy Award is beyond me. The man has been part of so many iconic movies, playing so many iconic roles that it's an injustice that he's only a one time winner.

    • @NewbWorksDwarven

its because he was bred from the east coast, broadway and the actors studio... he was looked down upon for many years by the west coast hollywood industry. They did not even want him to play in the godfather, it was almost a miracle he got the role, even though he was well deserved and earned.

The one time he won was the one time he shouldn't have won.
      Not because he wasn't great.
      He was.
But Denzel Washington gave the performance of a lifetime in Malcolm X.

Three things tip Carlito off in this scene: #1, He's denied the bathroom, and notices that if its "out of order", then why is somebody in there? #2 They turn the music up knowing shits is not far away from going down to muffle any gunfire or screaming. #3 Carlito notices the rack doesn't make one lick of sense after they mentioned they're playing eight ball. - after the culmination of these things.... Carlito takes action. Street smarts at its finest. Excellent scene.

@@harveyking5038it’s a tough world for sure, the acting. But this is actually the point here, to shine where it’s almost impossible. Al Pacino has been shining in the industry for decades, he deserves that title of One of the most brilliant actors of all times. To tell only one is the best, that’s always subjective.

@@harveyking5038 I agree with you for sure. There is a luck component here, but also think about it just a little. The fact is that there is a Pacino, a De Niro, a Nicholson, a Streep for one reason, that’s the point you are talking about. It must be this, the good luck seems to be random. I think is luck, she defines by herself but there is a work hard thing here as well. We can’t resume that this artist people for example they can’t work hard over the years. They had luck? Sure. But they work hard? Another sure.
So for me there is luck and there is hard work and the gift that you have to be good at this sector or another. I mean, I probably could try acting because I love cinema and I will probably gonna be a bad actor, even if I work hard I could possibly be a bad actor. If I have luck doesn’t mean I’m going to be one of the best actors of all time. It needs a whole career and a lot of hard decisions over the years. These people are good, very good at their business. They had luck? Probably a little bit, but the luck is not the only material here to create this alchemy. Don’t you think?
Thanks for the talk by the way.
      Have a good day.

Of all the legendary roles he played, the one that struck me the most was his interpretation of a disillusioned author having to take care of 5 or 6 children while his wife has left him and he is in the middle of depression regarding the play he is struggling to write. The film is a romantic comedy entitled ''Author! Author!'' (1982) and I must have seen it a hundred times. I still look at it today from time to time, like an old comforting blanket. For me, this is my favorite role of his. I was shocked to read recently that he didn't get along at all with the director during filming! Can you imagine that!?!
Him and De Niro will always be my favorites.

I am a late convert to the Al Pacino fan club. The very first movie where I saw and noticed him was the one in which he plays a blind veteran. ( am too lazy to google the name now..but the fans will know this movie). The court room scene where he makes an argument against ratting out fellow friends was one awesome master class in diction and delivery. I am from India so did not have that much exposure to him earlier in the pre-internet days. (edit : the move is scent of a woman)...saw it in teh sidebarr just now)

The scene in Carlito was a set up from the beginning, they planned to kill John Ortiz before they arrived. The Scarface scene was played with Pacino being conscious of his pain from being shot the whole time - real method acting. He acted like someone who had been shot, sweating & exhausted.

Of all his great films, I think I like "Heat" the most. He also did a low budget gem called, "Stand Up Guys," a film I guarantee you will LOVE, especially if you like Chris Walken, his partner in crime.

Number 1 scene is the Sollozzo and McCluskey murder in Louis’ restaurant where Michael becomes a real man and we see a glimpse of the godfather to be. We watch Michael, face swollen from McCluskey’s slap days before, grow up in minutes as Sollozzo and the dirty cop eat their last meal. All done while Pacino’s character said little in words, but poured everything into the emotions and thought process of the moment. That was consummate acting.
