How Pacino has only ever won one Academy Award is beyond me. The man has been part of so many iconic movies, playing so many iconic roles that it's an injustice that he's only a one time winner.
its because he was bred from the east coast, broadway and the actors studio... he was looked down upon for many years by the west coast hollywood industry. They did not even want him to play in the godfather, it was almost a miracle he got the role, even though he was well deserved and earned.
The one time he won was the one time he shouldn't have won. Not because he wasn't great. He was. But Denzel Washington gave the performance of a lifetime in Malcolm X. Families of Malcolm visited the set, and they were shocked to see him . They said it was as if Malcolm was alive.
The Godfather, Serpico, The Godfather 2, Scarface, Sea of Love, Carlito's Way, Scent of a Woman, Heat, Donnie Brasco, Devil's Advocate, Insomnia, The Irishman, some of Al Pacino's best films
That eight ball scene always gets me breathless. It makes no difference that I know the outcome. Just incredible acting and timing by everybody. The air is so god-damn tight.
I've watched this scene a dozen times and just now realized the 'rack' at 2:32 was a shit rack, like he was just going through the motions. You can see it's not a legal/proper rack.I mean, just look at the 8-Ball.
Yeah, that close up shot of al as he walks around the pool table, for some reason it keeps the tension in the scene, i guess cause you know he is trying to distract the others and we see only his expression as he works them.
Three things tip Carlito off in this scene: #1, He's denied the bathroom, and notices that if its "out of order", then why is somebody in there? #2 They turn the music up knowing shits is not far away from going down to muffle any gunfire or screaming. #3 Carlito notices the rack doesn't make one lick of sense after they mentioned they're playing eight ball. - after the culmination of these things.... Carlito takes action. Street smarts at its finest. Excellent scene.

Of all the legendary roles he played, the one that struck me the most was his interpretation of a disillusioned author having to take care of 5 or 6 children while his wife has left him and he is in the middle of depression regarding the play he is struggling to write. The film is a romantic comedy entitled ''Author! Author!'' (1982) and I must have seen it a hundred times. I still look at it today from time to time, like an old comforting blanket.
