- This is a step-by-step #sewalong tutorial for McCalls #M8240 which is a long sleeve knit top with a placket. It is a great pattern if you are #beginnersewing and are looking to start doing tops with plackets or making knit tops with a few more design details like cuffs, plackets, collars and lower band.

These change (alllll the time) but to give you a reference on my measurements since we are sewing: I am 5’5” and my measurements are as follows, upper bust 44”, full bust 45.5”, waist 39”, hip 46.5”

Great sew-along-camera usage was wonderful. Really cute classic knit shirt. May make a nice knit scrap busting shirt, too, since there are plenty of pattern pieces.
Loved that you stuck with setting the sleeves in the round. I consider myself an advanced beginner but best thing I ever really learned to do was set in a sleeve in the round. It was trying to do, but well worth the effort. Especially since having the directional seam around the shoulder keeps the side bodice from rising up when you raise your arm 😮.

Yes, try to set in the sleeves when ever you can, it is harder and God knows it can be challenging for me at times when the pattern has to much cap sleeve ease, but it s a good way to learn how to set them in. I think this pattern runs large based on the pattern measurements. I just cut another one and I may be going one size down. Another lady tagged me on Instagram on her top and she added in a dart which I noticed I could use too but it's a knit so I will let it fly. Anyhow, after that long response hope you find it useful.

This looks like something I can do period i'm glad you explained it as a beginner because it does help.
I just finished making this sweatshirt. Love it! I don’t know if I didn’t do the placket right but I had to add bias binding to cover the raw edge. When I had it on and the collar laid open it wasn’t finished looking to me.
I tried to avoid adding buttons but nonetheless I think I may have to add one to give the placket some stability. I already cut a second one but I'm going to hack it. Was thinking of doing the vide of the hack but it would have veered too far off from this sew along. its a great pattern.
I had the same issue with it looking unfinished. The placket instructions are somewhat lacking.
@@rmorine6394 That is an understatement, I so agree with you!!!! I feel like the plackets should fold onto themselves so you don’t see ANY seams. I saw the Andie dress from VikiSews and I may invest in it. It feels like the finishes on it are nicer. It is a long dress but I feel like the insides look so much better than this.
Thanks for the great tutorial Alex! I've made this twice in fleece (when I didn't know any better!😅). Those are very cozy and the loft probably hides the small problems with the plackets.
Recently made it again in cotton jersey and in ITY and added buttons. Loved how they look nice enough for work but still cozy. I'm super tempted to try to hack it to add a woven collar, or make it a full button down shirt.
I actually did!!!!! But I changed the collar to be a mandarin collar because the plackets on this drove me nuts. Just watch out for the length and make sure you have enough fabric for the plackets . I made it exactly as you are mentioning but I will most likely wear it half open with a tank top under it.
Thank you for the fantastic tutorial. I followed along and mine came out great. The placket was too long so I just added a snap to the placket to,keep it closed.🎉
I did shorten mine quite a bit, I think almost 4 inches as I wanted to avoid adding a button/snap. BUT I’m so happy to hear yours looks great.

I think the lux fleece from Joann’s would be too thick. Think french terry, light weight ponte, or regular fleece.

It is a double brushed knit, I would suggest you use something with a little more weight to it, perhaps a french terry or even a light weight ponte.
