A ferro cement boat is almost as hard as a reef, Most that stuff in there you don't need except the blender for making Margaritas and some good flip flops in case there is glass in the sand or old pop tops on the beach. Not much to know about sailing ,keep the rudder behind you, the keel pointed down and tie off good to the dock in case she springs a leak.Keep a five gallon bucket handy in case you need a pump that works. That insulated box is to keep the anchor nice and cold. That motor[Iron Jib]is optional and is useful only for backing off the reefs, really don't need that.Thats about it!Happy sailing.Thats about all you have to know, the rest is just boring trifals.Oh I almost forgot, when you see a big black cloud approaching put on all your sailcloth because the calm is finally over.Flying fish are not just for breakfast.Make sure ya stay in the shipping lanes[thats what they are for]and remember sailboats always have the right of way.If ya hear waves breaking on shore at night it probably means you were looking at the wrong chart.Don't ask me how I know that.A shark fin goes up and down and a dolphin fin wiggles side to side-I may have got that backwards never mind it doesn't matter. It is customary for the woman to pull the anchor while the man is at the helm.Any more questions sail boaters are a friendly and helpful lot. Here is a secret-most sail boaters can't even tie a bowline just like most electricians are color blind. Why?who knows!Have fun!!!I once was young too!Try to survive.Best bet during a hurricane is to get in the eye and stay there, thats what the US navy does, must be right.Krackens are real!Try not to summon one by mistake.

You should at least binge watch some of the other young sailing couples on RUclips like Sailing Uma, Learning the Ropes and Free Range Sailing. You'll get an idea of the cost of things and how much DIY you are in for with an old boat. If you read your comment section now and going forward as real input instead of angry criticism, you'll learn a lot too. There's always someone in there telling you how you did it wrong - and often times, they are correct and telling you because they care. Subscribed to your Dad's channel and now yours! Best of luck to you two. Congratulations.

You should get a survey just so the surveyor can explain things like the cold plate fridge, why the oven is hard to open, and of course to see if your cement is in good shape. Because concrete sinks. It's epoxy based cement, but it DOES still have pores.
Good luck. I already like you better than Abandon Comfort.

Hi Kate, subscribed through your dads channel. Good luck with your seaborne adventures, I'd advise you to take it slowly, do the maintenance that she needs (she looks like in need of some dire tlc. The vessel previous to that looked a lot better equipped) try and absorb everything there is to know about sailing, do some courses. Ferrocement boats need special inspection. Don't focus too much on domestic comforts, they are secondary to anything else. Feel free to ask me anytime for advice, I've skippered, cruised, chartered around the world the last 25 years. Best of luck!

Fantastic to see young people having a go. A few words of advice, 'spend money on a brand new engine', it's a big cost but it will be worth every dollar. I've sailed on a couple of concrete boats and also dived on a wrecked one. You need an engine you can trust 100% to keep you safe. Good luck!

Ferro-cement? I hope you both know how important hull maintenance is on those.
Never scrimp on the paint/coating schedule, inside and out. And if you ding it, you must have the boat lifted ASAP to prevent concrete cancer.

Hi Kate&Cameron, liked and subbed to your channel which I discovered as a follower of Andrew's channels. Wish you a lot of interesting content to post here and elsewhere, for the moment, as a sailor, I assume you have no hurry to go sailing yet with the boat. It is a nice boat but you have to learn and get to know every square inch of it, beneath and above the hull. You'll have to know to repair anything on it when offshore. And I assume in order to better know each other of the 3 of you, small distances, port-to-port sailing voyages circling or circumnavigating AUS or WA coast will be the best way to got the initial skills, practice and confidence.

I'm with that Dutch guy, a cement boat, I'd have it checked out, some were built in factories and some kit boats built in someone's back yard, which if it's a Shipwright that's good, if Johnny I ain't got no money, built it, maybe not so good. Be safe and find out everything you can. This is, I hope, going to be good, I'm going to watch this one, subscribed.

If you decide to paint the deck and interior, have a look at flow coat. It's a gloss white fibreglass resin that can be brushed straight on. I painted my deck and cabin with it recently and spattered blue 2 pack dots everywhere and it came up nice. More importantly it's easy, looks good, very hard wearing and seals the fibreglass from moisture.

The first thing to look for in a boat is the designer, a good designed will equal a good sailing boat, then look at the builder, lastly look at the interior, a concrete boat won't sail well because of all the weight in the hull, as a great designer once said, the fun in sailing is in direct proportion to the speed sailed, so you will not be having much fun

I used to live on my sailboat, it's a cheap life style or an expensive hobby. do yourself a favor and go meet some sailors....yacht club types are ok but just start walking the docks and meeting people. Learn all you can about the boats, the nomenclature, and go out sailing with anyone who will invite you along (oh yah and buy the "Sailing for Dummies" book). The community is always game to share what they know in my experience. Get some good, experienced and knowledgeable advice before making any structural deletions from your boat.

A near free boat that will cost upwards of $30,000 to fix - oh and if the ferro cement has been penetrated and the mesh is rusting then this is effectively scrap. No evidence of a survey and you are about to get a great deal poorer even if the hull is okay.
