Thank Jonathan and Shelise so much for letting me share more of my story! Meeting y’all in person was so fun and y’all are just as amazing in person as you are online ❤
This was great, thanks! I get to watch 2 of my subscribed-to channels in one video! The ex-scientoligists are putting out so much content that I feel like I've neglected your channels😅
Davey you are a good man. You are enough. Know your worth and your value. Also, please know, most of us trauma survivors, any trauma not just cults, aren't in a competition. Pain is pain. You have a right to tell your story and to share your pain. Pain is pain regardless. My hope for you is healing and for you to be well.
I was born into IBLP and also eventually diagnosed with autism at 32. I was a critical thinker from the outset. You can probably imagine how much I suffered at the hands of my authorities because of my logical, critical, and inquisitive disposition. I escaped via emancipation at 15. It's been a hell of a journey. Thanks for the post!
I wasn’t involved in the IBLP, but I was involved in the Southern Baptist Convention, which is adjacent to the IBLP, and I remember church members talking about the “umbrella of protection,” “submitting wholly to your spouse,” and “women must remain silent in church and yield to the leadership of men.” I also remember one church member who was going on about “How to Train Up A Child,” and at the time, I didn’t know what it was, but more recently I found out about it, and I realized they were essentially telling us that they were ab*sing their kids without explicitly telling us that they were ab*sing their kids. Some other members were more open about their ab*use such as, when their 3 year old was talking back, they immediately used the belt until their child could no longer cry and claimed that, “I’m raising my child biblically, this is how we make Christ-like kids.” I was horrified, but I also knew I dared to not even come close to speaking out about anything. As I got older, I realized that all of us were being be*ten at home to a certain extent, but we all knew to never speak about it. Ever.
As one of those that grew up in ATI with horrifically abusive parents, please do not invalidate your own trauma because some had it worse. I say this all the time. You will always find someone who had it worse and always find someone who had it better. Your trauma is valid. Thank you for sharing!!
Yeah I kind of thought the same thing. I also have a very very traumatic childhood and always did the same thing. So many have it worse than me so im fine, only im not…😅everyone’s trauma is valid. We should all have a chance to heal and come to terms with that trauma.
If I could ask one favour of all podcasts, it would be that no one uses the term "under-age women". This whitewashes the fact that they are children and that grooming and sexual crimes against them is paedophilia. Maybe this term is used to get by the censors, but these girls deserved to be protected and properly identified as minors. On the bright side, every interview with Davey is interesting and hopefully helps with his healing as well as that of the people listening. Jonathan, you do a great interview ... lots of empathy, not afraid to ask questions, and a nice touch of humour.
I noticed that. Thanks for the good point. I don’t think they are aware they say that. But I agree call it like it is for truth and honoring the victims.
This! It's becoming really common in general usage and it really bothers me. It's really weird to me that boys who are CSA survivors are not referred to in a similar manner. Language is more important than we realize - it shapes society as a whole in a subconscious way.
The way I was not expecting balling my eyes out today. At 52 I finally heard someone verbalize the connection between my high control upbringing and my drug abuse in my 20's.
I am so impressed with Johnathan. Not only did you present really well, you moderated the discussion so well and somehow made it flow so smoothly when circling back to questions. You must of had a great example to learn from! But in all seriousness if I hadn’t already known, I couldn’t have guessed this was your first solo interview.
I loved how Jonathan conducted the interview! It was as empathetic as I have come to expect from this channel, and it was heartening to see the deep communication style he brough to the table
I think Jonathan did great!! They have a great vibe together too. When Davey describes how the place smelled and Jonathan says “smells like regret?” 😂 I love his style and genuine curiosity but still really profound understanding and empathy. You guys are killin it! Keep it up!
Great job, Jonathan! Shiny Happy People was the catalyst that motivated me to look for more and find Cults to Consciousness. I was never in a cult, yet still I often relate to the trauma, and find it really eye-opening and moving to hear all these brave survivors' stories. Very valuable work you're doing.
Davey, ExMo here. Thank you for sharing your story. Hearing other people stories helps me heal from my trauma. Congrats on your years of sobriety. That’s not easy. Amazing you were able to go back and revisit the place where you were held. That’s not easy, shows your healing. A week of solitary confinement is truly torture and traumatic. I’m so happy for you and your healing. Keep up the good work. I’m impressed with the comedy skills of handling the audience in the Cult Kid. Great work!
Davey, you have developed and earned that tough exterior, but we can see your sweet, squishy core and we love you for every side of you. Jonathan, you did great! Thanks for giving us a different side of Davey! It is so exciting to see this channel grow day by day.
Davey, you are not a horrible person--you're a person who has survived some horrible things. In my opinion, you've done so quite admirably. Please remember to give yourself credit! Thank you for sharing your experience.
Jonathan, you are a really great host. You ask good questions, astute and sensitive. You and Shelise could have been very wonderful therapists! Glad you are hosts of this podcast. You bring on great guests (like Davey, who has a really powerful story and is a very inspiring person). Both of you are a gift to your guests and to us, who watch your program, and you complement each other very well.
Take no offense to this but i almost changed it when i didnt hear shelise but you fumbling the intro and having a smooth recover made me laugh. So here i stay 😂😂
Johnathan you did a great job and I look forward to seeing you in more videos👍 Davey was so incredibly woke here especially around the 41:30 minute mark where he’s discussing the escape that alcohol and illicit substances gave him. Thank you for being vulnerable in this moment, it made me emotional as I can relate, and I appreciate you candidly sharing this period of your life as it helps others relate and process as well. Very insightful and great interview
Thanks so much for this. Davey, after 32 years in an abusive marriage I left and trauma therapy has been very helpful working through the emotional and physical fall out. I wish you grace and strength.
You 2 are Rock Stars… thank you for your professionalism and story telling!! I love when men are open to share! Sounds like Davey is a normal teenage boy who was shamed for having “normal adolescent behavior” so glad you’re safe and sound ❤
Jonathan asked about the beats being from Africa and therefore bad because we saw in some other interview that IBLP actually believed that the drumbeats were associated with Africa and witchcraft 😅 it's in one of the booklets I believe 😬
I think a bit of that may have also come from the fact that Africa is full of. . . horrors. . .non-White people, who created that “evil” drum beat. As a side note, I imagine not many American Black families joined the Shiny Happy People!
Killed it Jonathan! Also man, absolutely wild how much psychotic behavior we let fly just because it has religion slapped on it. Like straight up child abuse, but its cool cause religious liberty. I'm really glad ya'll are getting these stories out there so that more people can recognize the harm that goes on in these groups, and that their religion is no excuse.
You're doing great, Davey. Sometimes our trauma tries to tell us otherwise, but it's a jerkface liar. You've got this, even on your bad days. Looking forward to seeing your stand-up sometime!
Just got up and there is a new episode! Beautiful bravery of Davey! Jonathan did an amazing job and I love his passion. I suggest to get in touch with Emily Harper, a brave young lady who survived the Christian extremist troubled teen school.
Awesome job Jonathan, two AMAZING hosts all for one INCREDIBLE youtube channel! Davey, you are so deserving, it's all an explanation of what happened to you, you're such an inspiration, don't take that away from yourself!
Great interview! I grew up in the IBLP culture also. My family attended the seminars live in Detroit for many years. When I started my own journey of deconstructing my beliefs, I truly didn't realize just how deeply ingrained these principles were in me. I have broken free from this. Perpetrators like Bill Gothard are the reason I have to believe there is a hell. 🔥 Side note: Shelise... I'm looking at your merch. Do you have a coffee mug that says, "Break the silence, break the cycle? I don't see one, but if you were to sell one, I would definitely NEED it! 😊
Jonathan, amazing interview! You both did great. Thank you, Davey, for sharing your story again. It's always a pleasure to hear you share. It helps me gain perspective on the experiences my buddies went through 🫶 much appreciated.
You have definitely helped me too! I am not deconstructing from extreme high demand christianity but there’s enough there that I am deconstructing and hearing others experiences even coming out of non Christian based type cults, has been healing to my process. There’s been a lot of similar and trauma type emotions. Makes me feel not so alone.
I attended character first training at that training center in Indianapolis. My employer drank the character first kool-aid. I had no idea what was really happening at that Center. It was so hidden
I like the different energy between male host and male guest. I think that alternating Shelise and Jonathan in interviewing male guests, and probably sometimes female guests too, could add quite a bit to the show.
Hi Shelise, thank you for all that you do! Just a thought from watching (nearly) all your videos on this channel: it seems you interview (mostly?) cult survivors/ defectors who have had moved on to living happy, successful, well-adjusted lives, but what about those whose lives didn't turn out so well? From watching channels interviewing the unhoused, I've found there are so many stories of hope, wisdom, inspiration and resilience from people who are currently derelict and struggling with serious issues, although it is may be more uncomfortable it is important to help the "underclass" in our society be seen and given a voice.
Hi! Yes, we have interviewed people who are still struggling or working through things. We are always happy to work with every type of person, regardless of where they currently are after their escape or deconstruction. 😊
I worked at a homeschool centre here in South Africa for 3 months and this homeschool centre worked with ACE and booklets and PACE and I can't even remember the rest but got bad vibes from it(and I come from a Christian private school EDUCATION) It just felt off. Reminds me of this homeschooling they're talking about
The drum thing is crazy to me. I'm in our church's worship band, & we have an awesome, Godly drummer. Also, my dad is one of the most Godly people I know, & he LOVED Metallica & Iron Maiden back in the day. 😆
Anybody here go to Bob Jones Academy or University? They practice the majority of the IBLP ways and were associated. My uncle was a pastor with these beliefs and my mom practised some of it. I was sent to the Academy( living on the campus highschool at 14 yrs of age) Not a good experience at all. It’s a very insidious abusive practice and causes serious emotional and spiritual trauma . Women and girls suffer so much and are programmed to accept male dominion over them. Everyone is constantly made to feel like they are filled with sin. Everything in the world is evil. Music, clothing , touching, tv , movies. Absolutely no music with drums or electric guitars. We were not allowed in a restaurant that served alcohol even if you didn’t partake… because you are then a supporter of ppl sinning. It’s a never ending treadmill of trying to be good enough. It’s taken me 40 years to slowly shed all of it… bits and pieces at a time.
Thank Jonathan and Shelise so much for letting me share more of my story! Meeting y’all in person was so fun and y’all are just as amazing in person as you are online ❤
It was so great meeting you in real life! Come visit anytime! You’re awesome 😁❤️
This was great, thanks! I get to watch 2 of my subscribed-to channels in one video!
The ex-scientoligists are putting out so much content that I feel like I've neglected your channels😅
I have a lot of respect for your journey and for you. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thank you for sharing. I’m in indiana and I had no idea there was such a place

@@kxjx ❤️ Thanks for the kindness. It means a lot!
Does your autism affect how you actually thought of IBLP?
Lord, have mercy.
I wasn’t involved in the IBLP, but I was involved in the Southern Baptist Convention, which is adjacent to the IBLP, and I remember church members talking about the “umbrella of protection,” “submitting wholly to your spouse,” and “women must remain silent in church and yield to the leadership of men.”

So very true!!! 👏🏻
I always tell people this: Just because the person beside you is in a full-body cast does not mean your broken leg doesn't hurt.
And trauma is subjective. What someone finds very traumatic another won't find as traumatic.
Exactly. Some for you doesn't mean less for others. It's not pie.
Yeah I kind of thought the same thing. I also have a very very traumatic childhood and always did the same thing. So many have it worse than me so im fine, only im not…😅everyone’s trauma is valid. We should all have a chance to heal and come to terms with that trauma.

That’s actually a really good point, never really thought about this. You learn something everyday. ☺️
Yes, absolutely. It’s become common usage, even by mainstream news organizations. An underage woman is a girl - a child.
Thank you, I literally yelled “GIRLS” at my phone
The way I was not expecting balling my eyes out today. At 52 I finally heard someone verbalize the connection between my high control upbringing and my drug abuse in my 20's.
🥲❤️
Solitary confinement is torture, no matter your age. You're very strong to have gotten through this.
Amen!
Absolutely. Solitary confinement is officially classified as torture and banned in most western countries. Not in America.
For a child no less! Like what on earth are people thinking??
46:00 Davey, you deserve every bit of happiness and success! You fought damn hard and you WON. This stranger on the internet is so proud of you.
I had been thinking that maybe it could be a good idea for Jonathan to do some of the interviews with the male interviewees, and here it is!
Proud of you, Davey! Congrats on your 11th year of sobriety! 🥰
That is so amazing! 😊
Great job, Jonathan!!
It’s really good to hear about parents that actually empathize, support, and apologize to their kids
Keep it up!
Lmao about Gothard ‘He got thrown out of his own cult’…. what a great observation and comment!
10/10 intro, Jonathan! Felt like i was in a parallel universe :)
Break the silence. Break the cycle.
Davey, ExMo here. Thank you for sharing your story. Hearing other people stories helps me heal from my trauma. Congrats on your years of sobriety. That’s not easy. Was this really Jonathan's first interview? Nah can't be. But good choice bringing Davey on.
His first solo interview 😁
He rocked it! …after fumbling the intro… he recovered. lol

Davey! 11 years is a big deal! Congratulations

Really loving Jonathan’s interview style. I’m so glad he’s officially in front of the camera as well.

Davey is awesome! Going to check out his podcast. It's cool to see Jonathan doing an interview! He did a good job.
I REALLY enjoyed hearing you do this interview. Like Davey said, it's a different experience while equally enjoyable.
Amaaaaazing interview, both of you! I always love hearing Davey expound on his story and speak out against IBLP! ❤
Jonathan, great interview dude! 🎉
You're doing great, Davey. Sometimes our trauma tries to tell us otherwise, but it's a jerkface liar. You've got this, even on your bad days. Looking forward to seeing your stand-up sometime!
That was a wonderful interview. Definitely got some different perspectives from his interview with Shalese.
Love this rare Jonathan interview 👌🏽

Great job Jonathan! Thanks for sharing your story Davey.
This was a touching interview and I definitely shed some tears by the end. Jonathan it was nice to see you in front of the camera!
Way to go Jonathan!!!! You did awesome & I’m so glad you had Davey back!!! I love Davey!!!
Nice seeing Jonathan and Davey talking together. A different vibe.
Jonathan did awesome in this solo interview. 👏
Jonathan, amazing interview! You both did great. Thank you, Davey, for sharing your story again. It's always a pleasure to hear you share. It helps me gain perspective on the experiences my buddies went through 🫶 much appreciated.
Great episode. Hang tough Davey!
I have not saw the first interview, but will definitely go back and find it. What a great guy and I wish him all if the good things in life.
Thanks. I'm so sorry to Davey and everyone who suffered this abuse ❤
1,000% agree. She has a gift! Very healing for so many people. Great job on this interview/conversation, Jonathan! 💖💖💖
Thank you for continuing to give a platform to these voices!
So fun to watch Jonathan do an interview!
Well done, Jonathan! It's good to see Davey again too
JONATHAN!! This was an awesome interview. I love C2C!!
😁🙏

Such an incredible story of healing childhood trauma ❤❤❤ great story of hope!
Davey’s podcasts are also awesome. Love seeing people give voice to those who were voiceless.
Powerful episode-and Jonathan-you did great flying solo!
Ya'll are making such a difference.
And the improvements are showing during each & every episode.
Stay blessed while staying pretty.
Thank you!

Just found your channel the other day with the Tia Levings interview and now this one. This is very helpful to me thank you and I subscribed
Johnathan is doing great and love to see him in front of the camera. love that you are job sharing! This is true partnership. ❤
Ooh a great collab between two creators I love.
Jonathan 🎉❤
I worked at a homeschool centre here in South Africa for 3 months and this homeschool centre worked with ACE and booklets and PACE and I can't even remember the rest but got bad vibes from it(and I come from a Christian private school EDUCATION) It just felt off. woohoo congrats jonathan! great solo interview 🎉
I stopped watching this. But if Jonathan does more, I'll be back to watching. Amazing job Jonathan
OMG DCtalk was the bomb!!!
Great interesting interview👍👍👍
