  • Joined for a second time by Mary (former Amish) and Hannah (former Holdeman Mennonite), we discuss the ways in which being gay/bi in their settlements harshly affected them and how queer plain people are generally erased from society. Bringing awareness and visibility to the LGBTQ community, they share their experiences openly and shed light on the disproportionate harm they faced.

I've heard from others who have left similar communities that if a man is willing to raise a hand to an animal he is probably doing the same to his family, I think it's a factor in the sense if a man is willing to hurt something innocent that goes towards all innocents around him

I've seen Mary interviewed before and what always strikes me is the rage behind her words. That must have taken so long to feel. I look back to my own history with religion and how I was taught to repress anger, and I can't even imagine how much worse it must have been for her. I hope that everyone, especially women, who grew up in a high control, repressive religion one day can let themselves feel all of the rage they deserve to feel.

My upbringing was fundamental evangelicalism, which is less strict about some details of the female experience, but no less shadowed and oppressive in a spiritual sense. I still struggle to feel rage because it was so forbidden for women to have strong emotions. And I was told over and over that I had a good childhood. Sometimes the fury hits me by surprise.

I had a neighbor who was arrested for having sex with his neighbors mini donkeys! I was sickened! The guy found a few used condoms in the corral/barn area. He set up trail cams and caught him! Because it was said to be a sexually deviant crime with no victim, he was sentenced to undetermined years in a mental hospital for sexual deviant. Many of us fought for him to be on the sex offender list, but because his victims weren’t human he wasn’t eligible. I can’t imagine he would not offend a child if he was given access.

I often tear up when I read posts such as yours.
I'm a senior citizen now, but 60 years ago, I knew three wonderful men who committed suicide in my very small and Christian village - - because they couldn't bear to live with the shame they assumed they'd have to experience.
I'd give anything to have them back, and to let them know that it gets better, and that there ARE places where they can live and be true to themselves.

I'm a queer addict (in recovery now) and I've never been attracted to a child. Ever. The truth is that they don't want to hear that the monsters are in their own homes, in their churches, in their workplaces...but it's easier to point the finger at the black sheep than the rest of the herd.
I feel for Mary. I can't imagine how hard it was living in that world, keeping SUCH a lid on one of the brightest, most joyful parts of yourself. She deserved to have a lady whose hair shone in the sun, whose loving hands she knew the gentle touch of, whose smile made her heart flutter....those experiences -- crushes, flirtations, those first relationships -- are some of the most beautiful, educational experiences we can have and denying people those experiences can really harm them. Especially when you're taught that you're fundamentally broken and wrong. Awful.

Extreme modesty and purity culture often includes indoctrination from very early ages. That indoctrination hyper focuses of sexuality, often exposing children early to concepts that aren't age appropriate and can be traumatizing. Constant monitoring, hyperfocus on sex, extreme discomfort with your own body and sexual repression often contributes to sexual obsessions and paraphilias. Children and teens often act out sexually in deviant ways when not properly educated on consent and informed that there are appropriate outlets for sexuality and curiosity. It's tagic that this occurs not just in Amish communities, but all over the religious spectrum and even is taught in many secular families.

It's a cult you've never touched on called oneness pentecostalism/apostolic and is very common in Missouri/Arkansas area, but exsists throughout the world.
At one point I wasn't allowed to wear chapstick-- because it was "too sexual". My cousins had it so much worse! Obvs I couldn't cut my hair, wear makeup, jewelry or pants. My cousin’s story is much wilder!
In the most extreme versions we were the "snake handlers", but normal churches are "holy rollers". Inagine people rolling on the floor bawling and "speaking in another language", screaming, casting out demons, et. cet. @@michaelar4867 I keep waiting for it too, I just think right now that people are afraid to call it out. It's almost scary to be the first person to talk about it, because of the potential backlash. I, about halfway through my childhood went from unaffiliated Oneness Apostolic to UPCI. I'm sure you know that the unaffiliated churches can be very very culty! But even mainstream, now that I'm an adult and out of it, is worrisome.

Ironically, both Hannah and Mary are righteous in their anger. Not in the biblical sense but just raw courage in their testimony about their lives. As a "member" of the CSA community my heart sings to hear their unvarnished truth. I'm 74 yo and it's taken most of my life to be able to understand the lack of safety and secure attachment which results from this childhood trauma.

Just so you know, "sexual abuse and molestation" coverage is usually available and often offered to churches and many other nonprofits. I was an insurance agent for 20 years, and I have sold this coverage. It's not because they "expect" it to happen, but it is a risk to consider. If the agent is ethical, they'll often counsel client on having a safety plan in place to prevent such things. Also, there are prevention questions in the insurance company applications. Just thought you should know. Much 💕 love.

Sorry this is so of the church is accused of this they’re protected? It protects them financially? Like there will be no financial responsibility from the church if they’re caught doing this?

    • @jennas2068
      @jennas2068 2 месяца назад +3

@@Junitunes Sort of, but it's a bit more complicated than that. Let me clarify. Insurance, by nature, reluctantly expects some losses - that the insured would be *legally liable to pay* - and this coverage has what's known as a "sublimit" which is typically a much lower amount (say, 100K - 300K) than say, a typical $1M General Liability policy. So, really? It's really for legal defence of the church/non-profit. If the church was found *negligent*, arguably, any settlement would be MUCH higher. So, for the sake of argument, let's say our friends Mary and Holly filed a claim - the most the insured church would have from the policy would be that sublimit (minus any deductible) and chances are it would only be enough for legal defense costs. Now, in reality? The insurance company could make the decision to go ahead and try to "settle" that claim and simply pay out the sublimit. It's happened. I'm not an attorney, and I'm no longer an agent, but I'd also venture to guess that a court could find gross negligence and the church would be responsible for ALL of the claim/suit. In short: insurance is designed for the good people who really do try and avoid bad things from happening. It's designed to protect from losses, but I think not in the way that your comment implies? It's NOT designed to be a get out of jail free card or a protection of bad/foreseeable acts. I hope that's clearer than mud?

I have a real problem with homophobia in religions. I find it really sad and I don't agree with it. But I understand how people can think like that. It's generational and passed down. It doesn't help it's in the Bible. People don't want to believe if the bible is wrong about sexuality maybe it's wrong about other things.
If God is loving and created us, why would he want some people to live a loveless life condemned to loneliness and believing they are an abomination?

What an epic episode! I've found that folks who have only seen liberal coastal cities think the whole US is a safe place for gay people. In reality, your experience as a queer person in the US can vary from affirming and great to oppressive and mortally dangerous, depending on what community you're born in. I related to Hannah's confusion growing up - I'm bi/pan too and it took for-EVER to figure that out. I really liked all Mary's comments about community and accountability. And her advice at the end was everything I wish someone had told me when I was a fresh ex-Mormon. Queer people are born everywhere because gender and sexual variance are natural features of humanity; we have to be reminded of this truth because all the oppression and repression obscure it from us. Love seeing all the queer Amish & Mennonite representation here!

Thanks for sharing. I'm sorry you went through that, I can hear the pain and also caring and dedication in your voices.
It's important to keep talking about these systems. The systems themselves are the issue, people being raised in abusive systems.
Many people are honestly trying to do the best they know how, but that system was the only thing they'd been taught and they don't realize the unintentional harm.
Others might be outright abusers, and can be anywhere. Some because of the systems twisting them, some because of abuses, etc.
Still others could be somewhere in between.
And others have gotten out but are still affected by it years later, even if logically they know the cause and that they don't have to be affected, yet it's still got the internal effects anyway (frustrating as hell).
Sharing helps educate, for those willing to listen, or at the very least plants a question that might be looked at more closely later. It helps comfort. It can hopefully help counteract these systems enough so that future generations won't be put through the same abuses.
