I've watched the whole series on the Amish Community and I'm blown away by how happy, humble and generous everyone is. I didn't know much about the Amish before watching this, so thank you, Peter! I'm kindly jealous of their lifestyle and wish i could escape the craziness here in the UK and live a life in such a tight Community. In all seriousness I think these people live the best life in this day and age. I appreciate the way you presented the whole series without putting a spin on it but just rather inform people like me that didnt know more than what's usually mentioned about the Amish. ya I like the series , nice content . So I was wondering what their views are on clothing items like shorts or short jeans , I grow up in a culture where you don't wear shorts and you don't wear anything tight , mostly loose fit and stuff , it was mostly jeans or regular long pants that people wore , I'm no longer religious or anything but I was wondering what their views are on different clothing styles . We also were banned from drinking alcohol , I wonder how the Amish view drinking and stuff . Honestly I don't have a problem with the whole horse riding thing , I'm fine with it , its also good for the environment because your not releasing garbage into the air , its not particle for me but good for them

Peter, it needs to be said: I found your channel through the Chassidic series, specifically the Shabbat dinner video which popped up randomly on my feed. What you’re doing is here probably the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on RUclips. What you’re providing here is what people typically have to travel for, and most of us don’t have the means or the time. And even if we can explore the world, meaningfully penetrating these communities we aspire to learn about is usually too difficult for the average traveler. I’ve learned so much about life itself learning about these different cultures. I take mental notes about every community you present; how to live more simply from the Amish, how to structure family raising from the Jewish, how to overcome environmental challenges from your Brooklyn videos, and so on. This is how we overcome cultural and religious hate. Of course these communities have their internal problems, but I’ve learned that these groups that are often punchlines in the Western world are beautiful, and there’s a reason they’ve survived. Thank you.

He eventually moved down to Plain City, where I was born and raised (live in Texas now). A lot of my relatives are still Amish and live in Holmes County. The Mt Hope Auction is a huge part of my childhood. They have another similar one but for kidney-related health that was actually started by my grandmother. I remember going up every year to help with food and several other things. One of my fondest memories. We spent a lot of time in Holmes County with my Amish relatives when I was young. All these videos bring back such great memories!
Also, my grandparents had a home right there in Pinecraft where you were in Florida. We would go down every spring break and stay with them.

AScottayoder I was raised in NE Ohio Geauga Co (Middlefield, Parkman, Burton area) & my grandfather (Robert "Bob" Ohl) was the auctioneer in Middlefield @ the Livestock Auction. My father hunted all around the Holmes Co area & we all at 1 time or another had a taxi service for the Amish. Every year we took a group at Christmas to the Metzenbaum Center as some of their family who had mental handicaps put on a Program & my grandpa used to take whichever grandkids (I went w/him for many years) to support our Amish friends and neighbors. I now have lived in Tx for almost 20 yrs & before that spent many yrs on Columbus' far westside & drove through Plain City regularly, but miss the community dearly, (not the cold weather, lol) I thought I'd say hello from 1 Buckeye to another, & I'll bet we both have some great stories we could share, ie like the 1st time I saw a buggy going thru the drive thru of McDonald's in the early 80's. Peter does some of the best videos & we each had our reflections of memories watching this one. Blessings....

The Amish are NOT the most empathetic people you will ever meet when it comes to animal welfare. They will take care of their horses and cattle only as much as it takes to keep them working and producing. A buggy horse might be tied up for hours in the hot sun with no shade or water, tormented by flies because the owners won’t put fly spray on them. I’ve never seen my neighbors call a veterinarian. If an animal is sick they usually only try some home remedy. Sometimes it works, usually it doesn’t. That applies mostly to horses, cattle, and other livestock. As for cats and dogs, they are not pets. You’ll never see one inside the home or even in a doghouse and they don’t buy dog/cat food for them. They just wander about the place and are expected to feed themselves on whatever they can scrounge up. They find shelter in whatever place they can, whether it is -20 or 95 outside. The Amish will not interact with them by talking to them (other than an order) or petting them. They are never spayed or neutered so you can expect to see litter after litter running around the barnyard. Very few will survive past a year or two. Some buy a dog from a breeder for varmint control. Those are the puppy mills that others have mentioned. I’ve seen one or two of those mills and I can’t imagine a worse place to live. Great Pyrenees and Australian Shepherds are common varmint dogs. And as for outright cruelty, that’s more common than you might think. I’ve seen Amish beat a recalcitrant horse or dog mercilessly. I once saw our neighbor kids tormenting a small kitten while it cried and cried (I never saw that kitten again).

When he said they helped those outside the community as well, it touched my soul. I am sad that the industry has taken over there. Everything is a brand now. It's lost a little of the unique charm that was exclusive to the area as a consumer. However, I don't have to go far to get the same brands at home. As for the Cult question, you are right its not a Cult, its just another school of one of the 3 mainstream christian churches. their Religion is only extreme in the Rejection of modern Technology, but that is to be expected when the other part of their church went for hyper capitalism with affinity for technology.

What I discovered from this series was that the Amish are not about living in the past but are about FAMILY. Family values that extend to include your neighbors and entire community. No one is left out in the cold.

I always get my brown eggs from Solomon Weber and his wife has a beautiful greenhouse where I get our baskets in the summer and we pick strawberries for jam there too. Thank you so much Peter for recognizing our Amish and mennonites as they are the most peaceful, hard working and lovely folks we have. ( that I can think of that is, not to say their aren’t these traits in many other cultures Ofcourse… I’m just a tad bias I guess being as I was raised in their community).

This is amazing. I've lived in Ohio my whole life. I've always been around the Amish. I've worked in their communities. I've learned so much more about them watching this series than I've learned my whole life.
I used to collect blood. Their Bishop's required the whole community to donate. It always bothered me they supplied the bulk of of the Cleveland region blood supply. They donate far more than they receive. I could run a drive in the middle of a heavily populated area and not collect a lot but their small communities would keep us busy all day long. They were lined up down the street all day.

Have been to many Amish auctions as well as non-Amish auctions. My hubby is the buyer, I am the people watcher. At one Amish auction I watched as an Amish man rode a fabulous leopard spotted Appaloosa stallion down the road to the auction. The man had that horse on after burners! They arrived and the rider cooled the horse out by walking back and forth in front of the farm where the sale was. Once cooled Mr. Speedy Amishman put the horse in a shed with a big old sign on the hind end---"THIS HORSE KICKS". I'm a horse person so chatted the guy up about the horse and the fact he was training the horse and when done the horse would be sold at auction. More and more Amish families showed up as the auction went on; whole families no more singles. last of all behind all the buggies was a lady with 4 little kids in an open style cart. I had never seen a mom and kids arrive at a sale. As time passed she found a place to park the rig and bring the kids to the play area. Next time I saw her she was with Mr. Speedy Amishman. I concluded that there are even Amish guys who have midlife crises and just have to have the really fast and flashy sports model of transportation while they leave the wife and kids with the sedate van.
