  • Behind The Scenes of a Mennonite Country Store:
    My son Jacob and myself went to visit the “The Dutch Treat” a Mennonite country store located in Rose Hill Virginia.
    I met Leon and Lena Graber the owners of The Dutch Treat at a festival a few weeks ago and ask if I could come document their country store and they said come on. Come see what goes on behind the scenes of a mennonite sandwich shop and bakery.

      Define "traditional". Do you mean by the way they dress (at least the women)? Cause whenever I hear "traditional" it's 1950's-esque "women shouldn't work" type of thing. But these women are working and seem content. It's just a question. I've been to Amish country and, as a New Yorker, it was weird and interesting at the same time...weird in a good way cause their food was amazing at a Dutch restaurant I went to. I even saw Amish women walk into a Dress Barn and I was just staring so hard cause I've never seen women dressed like they do.

    • @twistedpixel2558
      @twistedpixel2558 10 дней назад

      @@cassandra2968 Traditional in values, morals, ethics, and religion. Conservative women have never 'not worked', quite the contrary. They don't generally work jobs out in general public, earning the bread that goes on the table, but their day generally starts earlier and ends later than anyone else in the house. All the housework, clothes, cleaning, cooking, shopping, making/mending/buying clothes, and all the other daily goings on are the responsibility of the ladies of the house. The men earn the money, run the farm, business, saw mill, whatever line of work they're in. Most all Amish and Mennonite people are fairly self sufficient, they can mend, make, build, or do most things for themselves. Many women and men of conservative Christianity do work for other members of their church, but working in the general public is usually avoided, mostly because there isn't a need or desire to. Some Mennonite men will work regular jobs as younger men, but eventually most of them end up in a business for themselves, either farming, carpentry, logging, or running a small country store.

    Mrs. Raber reminds me of my great granny. We were not Mennonite but what is often called “holiness” or southern Assembly of God which is similar in traditions. Women did not wear pants, cut their hair, wear makeup and were proud homemakers & mothers who were valued for their talents in sewing, cooking, canning/gardening, natural remedies etc… I remember standing in a chair to reach the stove & top shelves when cooking. It was a blessing! My skills & work are STILL highly valued by my family. My husband thanks me daily for being such a “good wife” and I owe most of it to my early childhood 🙌🏼❤🙂 If we ever travel up that way, we will surely drop by for some great food & friendly smiles.

    My best friend died suddenly 5 years ago this month. I have friends at church, but not like her. We made donuts for fashnact day every February, helped each other with sweet corn every summer, and baked cookies every Christmas time. Our families would get together to play games on Sunday evenings. But since her children all got married and she died, I am just having a hard time finding someone to really open up to like we did with each other. I am praying that soon I find someone. This has been a tough year as my mother-in-law passed away and 2 weeks later my sister died in PA (where I was originally from). Pray for me that I can soon find that circle of friends that I can open up to. Thanks for your words of encouragement.

    But that woman would be up all hours of the day and night cooking and baking. Good food made with real ingredients.

    As a child growing up in a retired USMC fathers home, we moved frequently and he moved us to work in East Tennessee for a few years until I spread my wings and left to see the world. This type of family ran business was sprinkled in our area where we lived. Way before mega grocers entered the small town environment. I miss the closeness of the mom & pop grocers that you will never get in big groceries elsewhere. It is so refreshing to know that they are still alive and well like this one obviously is.

    This store is much like the Corner Stone Market (we call Amish store), that we visit each week. Although there is no bakery in the store here, they sell homemade breads & desserts. The sandwich list and packaging, as well as set up, is very much like the store here. We enjoy the nice variety of foods we find there. Dutch Valley Foods is the same company that provides much of the same items in our local store. We have become good friends with the family members that all work there. Thank you for sharing 🕊

    I only wish that we had a store like this where I live bc I would buy all of my groceries from them. I appreciate how well kept their stores are. Their attention to quality products is almost unheard of in the big box stores. There are a couple that pay attention to quality and appearance of the products but not many. I do place online orders from Walnut Creek but there is only so much that they can ship. But man, everything I buy is truly great products. Thanks for making this video. I sure could go for one of those chicken salad sandwiches on sour dough bread right now!

    It's funny to think just how diverse the Amish and Mennonite communities are around the country. By me in Lancaster, even most Mennonites are still mostly traditionally dressed. And I couldn't imagine one having hair above the lip. They keep to their traditional facial hair yet. But one thing is for sure, it's fantastic to see just how great their work ethic and it never changes.

    The mennonite folks are some great people, there is a small community of them about 12 miles south of where i live here in southwest Louisiana and they are very hard working and can cook and make different food products, i’ve bought and eaten their foods that they sale at the local fair every October and it is delicious and some of them are very talented when it comes to building things like storage sheds and porch swings and other furniture stuff.

    I have a similar store like this near me in Madison, VA... actually I believe it's a bit larger than this one. Yoder's in Madison. ALWAYS BUSY! If your a baker
    this is the place to find FRESH ingredients that hasn't been sitting on a shelf for ages and also has harder to find baking ingredients. Also, these stores have
    great things that you can buy and assemble gift baskets with. Madison, VA is located on Rt. #29 south of Washington D.C. and north Charlottesville, VA.

    I used to work for a wood furniture manufacturing company, and I made "Amish" Chairs for the Amish to sell at their stores. They were hand made and I was not very good at it, nor was I very efficient at it either. Not a single Amish person worked there. This was almost 30 years ago in Arcola, IL. I believe there is now an Amish owned company in its place as the place I worked at burned down I had heard.
