Потому что в те годы в ходу был Хэви Метал (Мейден,Прист,Warlock'и всякие).Т.к. "арт рок" был в упадке,в тех же Genesis уже никто не верил.А они хоп-па,и выдали реально крутые песни.Лебединая песня старого доброго арта!) Шикарно звучит,конечно.Да и клип выдающийся,что тут говорить.
Слышал раньше, но не придавал значения...совсем мелкий был...теперь слушаю с наслаждением =)

@@CaptainOfTheLostWaves I’d agree with you Captain. Tony Banks’ keyboard lines remind me of Friday the 13th in places and Phil’s deranged “ha ha ha! Oooooh!” while gurning at the camera with a red lamp on him, is a bit of a nightmare scenario, but it works.

After Gabriel's departure he was a little bit shy on vocal. On 'Trick...' and 'Wind...' his vocal is cute, but little blurred. But look at 'Mama' and see how he developed and 'shy' became 'shine'.

The drama in this music is extremely high and Phil Collins vocal act one of the deepest, best performances ever.
Phil Collins voice is amazing but you can't help but appreciate how complicated that musical composition was. I've never heard anything so complex and haunting before. It's unique music like this that can stand the test of time.
It's actually a very clever use of only 4 major chords & 1 minor chord to create something far more complex.
The almost mechanical Linn Drum pattern & eerie atmospheric ARP Quadra synth patch create an dark musical picture that is ultra captivating.
Ghosts by Japan is another song that uses excellent sound programming to create an ultra complex sounding arrangement.
Both are classic 80's tracks that are unfairly overlooked for the more commercial songs of this great musical decade.
Composition of this song follows a pattern millions of songs were written: intro-verse1-chorus1-verse2-chorus2-bridge-verse3-chorus3-ending. It lacks pre-chorus part which is common in many songs. Maybe extended bridge part sounds unusual today but back then many rock acts implemented it, usually reserving it for guitar solo.

Phil takes this to another level, to the point of total insanity and depravity. But still totally controlled. A genius at work, right there!
Indeed. He had this "scream" voice between 1980 and 1992, and I miss it.
It changed in the 90's and he always sounded as if he had a cold or something. And now, with his hearing almost gone,
he barely sings with a whisper. And it sounds really weird to hear songs that were formerly performed with a FUCKING ROAR
now sound like a deathbed lullaby...

"Our manager, when he first heard it, thought it was about abortion, the kind of feeling of the, you know, the fetus, if you like, saying to the Mother 'Please give me a chance, can't you feel my heart, don't take away my last chance', all those lyrics are in the song but in fact what it is, is just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him. The opening keyboard/synthesizer riff must be one of the creepiest ever on a Top 40 hit. I can visualise this riff against a ghost story or being in an eerie environment.
