I love the Maserati Quattroporte, but you have to remember that Doug reviewed a 2005 model, yours is a 2012 model. So obviously the car would be improved as new models came out.

Thanks for your comment. This is the refreshed version (of the SAME generation) which can be obtained for the price he quoted. The QP Generation 5 was out from the Model year 2005-2013 in the United States It's NOT the Gen 6. Think of it like gen 5.5. In fact, that's what I stated in the first minute. I see you think the 2005 Turo (Rental Car) stripper Doug reviewed is indicative of all Gen 5s, well...that is my point exactly.

Besides choosing a very used base-model ‘05 Quattroporte, much of what Doug complained about were unique to that vehicle. Ferraris themselves have similar basic dashboards and gadgets without all the high-tech bells and whistles he’s probably accustomed to. Ferraris are known for their designs, lines and power. My recently-acquired, previously garaged ‘05 QP [just north of 17.5k miles] is a pure powerhouse and turns heads everywhere I go. It’ll be a classic next year (2025) and doesn’t give me any electrical or mechanical problems. It’s a very well-maintained “Neiman Marcus Edition” with a sunroof, heated seats and the khaki interior which matches your QP - but with burgundy piping which matches the exterior’s beautiful paint job. And most of all, I love the “F1” gearbox which isn’t loose and shaking. It looks delicate but trust me, it’s very sturdy. People who either complain, breaks or burns out the clutch probably never owned a manual/stick shift to understand and gauge the transmission and engine in between gears. ⚙️

    • @econseer
      @econseer  2 месяца назад +1

Very good points. I own 2 Ferrari and wrench on this car, and you are 100% correct, it's a Ferrari. Also, the F1 gearbox is seeing a resurgence, it's actually the connoisseurs choice among some enthusiasts. Even Doug DeMuro has been saying he's appreciating F1 more and more. Appreciate hearing about your car, and congrats and enjoy your 4 door Ferrari sedan.

In all fairness, you could make the counter-argument that Maserati should have gotten at least some of this stuff right to begin with. Early adopters were stuck with a transmission and interior that weren't quite fully sorted out, and it's not like they can download a patch to update their cars.

This is a good point, which I addressed in the very first minute of the video, hence I said one should get the 5.5 (if you plan to buy it.) This car first came out in 2005. Almost 20 years ago, easy to 2023 Monday morning quarterback.

Good rebuttal. I personal stopped watching Doug's videos after he bagged the quattroporte GTS. He seems to have a vendetta against the brand. I agree with the other comments in that it is probably just too refined for him. Yes the old ones had their quirks but that was part of the romance of such a prestigious Italian machine. Was then and still is now one of the finest sedans ever built. I have a 6th gen and it is by far the best car I've ever owned. Recent improvements have all been good, drive's like a dream and very reliable if maintained properly despite the bogus claims.

Thanks, Ciego, First, let me say I like DeMuro, this is not a knock on him. IN fact, in his latest videos, he's said the QP is a good car - his problem was twofold - everyday drivability of the Duo-Select and Price when new. With depreciation, we can no longer be critical of the high price, so what we're left with is the Duo-Select criticism. My friend was the general manager for Ferrari Silicon Valley when Ferrari owned Maserati. I can tell you that some folks actually prefer the Duo-Select, it is more sporty - something at home at the track or backroads.

I actually prefer the F1 gearbox. I prefer a more engaging driving experience more authentic to driving a Ferrari…having that gearbox pretty much makes it a 4 door Ferrari. The ZF just makes it more friendly for the market that ended up being the majority consumer. But to enthusiasts that wanted a true supercar experience in a four door package which is who they were originally targeting, duo select was just fine because they drove it correctly.

Hello Dhruv, I would stick with 2012-2013 MY - they resolved a lot of the issues. That said, these are still pretty much Ferrari, so you should expect everything that having a bespoke low production car entails. I don't mind wrenching on these cars, so it's not a problem for me. So far I've replaced the alternator, header gaskets and window regulator. I have a leaking power steering rack that's easily replaceable too. These things the dealer would charge about 10K at least. For me, it cost about $2,000 + my own labor. I own 2 other Ferrari too, so it's par for the course and I'm used to it. Just go into this with eyes wide open. It's no Toyota (which is sort of the point in the first place.)

I honestly really enjjoy Doug's reviews - although I do find the way he expresses himself to be a little whiny and annoying at times, I really appreciate the amount of detail he goes through when he reviews a car. It's genuinely interesting to get see many of the odd little quirks about some cars that you just wouldn't otherwise hear of and that most reviewers don't mention.
That being said, having seen all of his Maserati reviews it seems clear that he has a personal bias against the brand, because there are so many things he picks on so severely in these cars that either aren't big issues, are misunderstood, or are just as bad on other cars of the era. The Quattroporte sadly seems to have copped it the worst.
Firstly, it seems blatantly obvious that the particular car he reviewed was in really poor shape. One of the angles you can actually see the steering wheel airbag cover is falling off, and on top of that there was the wobbly aircon trim he mentioned and buttons that arent working - the fact that he just brushed things like this off as "probably just normal" is a clear display of his bias for the brand, as I feel in any other top end car (merc, BMW, etc) he'd have given it the benefit of the doubt.
Secondly is the fact that throughout the review, he actually says a number of positive things about the car - particuarly about the way it drives. And yet when he is concluding the video he says something like "its a terrible car in pretty much every possible way". Which really makes no sense, because when driving the car the only thing he really criticised was the gearbox - and even then he openly acknowledged that the later models replaced it with a ZF.
Another thing that makes his bias obvious is that as much time as he spent criticising the car, he made zero effort to really highlight good things. I recently sat in one of these Quattroporte models and the quality of the leather is like nothing else. That, combined with the beautifully finished wood, the salcantara headlining, etc - it's truly a special place to be. Yet he didnt say a thing about any of that from what I remember.
Hell even when he reviewsd the Granturismo, which he actually didnt hate, I was amazed how much of a big deal he made over the multimedia interface - I believe he reviewed something like a 2015 or 2016 model, and he was raving on about how modern cars have big fancy toucscreens etc. But I currently drive a 2014 Mercedes C250 (W204) with upgraded premium MM system, and the system in the Merc is almost identical as the one in the Granturismo. You navigate the system the same general way, and it even has the phone dial pad liek the Maserati does - yet I bet if he revirews a C63 AMG from that year he wouldn't have complained about any of those things.
I'm actually looking to buy a new "special" weekend car in a year or so and one of these Quattroportes is high on my list of options - I just think it's such a unique car given that you have all the style, elegance, space and luxury of an Audi A8, and yet at the same time you also have the sportiness, performance, handling and character an Aston Martin. I think that's a truly intoxicating combination and I also believe that this shape QP is absolutely one of the most beautiful cars (not just sedans, but cars period) ever made.

really good summary. I would describe my Sport GT in the same way. It smells luxurious let alone looks luxurious when you climb in. Wide kick plate heavy doors, low seat with bolsters and the trident embossed in the headrest. The leather is a deep red wine colour with piano black interior. Double glazed windows. It has higher performance than most hot hatches I've owned and in sport the power band really let's you know a Ferrari engine sits at the heart of this car. The exterior in black has speckled flakes with big 20 inch wheels and massive Massaratti badged calipers. I get so many comments when I park it up. A truly special car. Make sure you look carefully and make sure for full service history and Warranty. You should have a bit of disposable income as well. They are not a cheap car to own long term. BTW in the short term I've owned the car it's value has risen. Worth noting. I suspect the ZF F1 has reached its limit in depreciation.

I'm not sure about the other brands, but specifically about Italian cars, Doug has a lot of inaccuracies and false statements in his videos. I am especially annoyed sometimes by the way he presents a particular car. I don't think it's particularly objective about and also accurate about dynamics and mechanics. But Doug has his audience and that helps him.

I love Doug quite a bit, with the number of reviews, he's bound to have mistakes. That said, he pointed out later on all the things in my review were correct. So that's a credit to him. Hello Ameer. It does have a USB connection but not for music (I know very lame) - no USB in the back.
I do highly recommend though the NaviPlus upgrade. This allows you to use Android Auto/Apple CarPlay without disturbing the original system (which has a lot of stuff that is linked to the car) - it is an overlay.

Can't wipe off the smile that the Ferrari F430 engine gives, plus the Pininfarina design, and is always the only car of the kind in a sea of cookie-cutter BMWs, MBs, Audis, Lexus, etc... In my 2 years of driving, I've only seen another QP V 5.5 once. :)
