      Brembo brakes
Zf 6hp26 trans (one of the best in the world)
      Ferrari f136 (extremely reliable)
      Bosch parts everywhere
      Bilstein suspension
      Etc etc.
This car has some of the best parts in the world (at the time).

Glad to see someone dispel that 50/50 weight distribution is 'perfect'. When accelerating you wish a rear weight bias for traction. Upon braking force is moved forward so a rear bias keep the center of rotation more towards the middle for cornering. My Lotus is 38/62. Given F1 cars can bias fore/aft the brakes they are in the 45/55 range to adjust as fuel loads and traction changes.

So much history to be told, the first 997cc cooper S engine made by John Cooper from spare parts (which was awful), the high revving 970cc and 1070cc, the rally pedigree, the OHC A series that never was, multiple take overs, the insane ERA Turbo.... So much to be said about this absolute gem of a car, a classless icon that literally changed affordable performance as we know it.

I bought one of these used with the F1 trans because I had no interest in driving an automatic. It's amazing, and actually it sounds better because you hear those manual shifts instead of the sloppy-sounding automatic ones. The clutch is a problem but not as bad as quoted, since that average lifespan includes tons of drivers who were treating it like automatic and burning through it. ZF is still the way to go if you want a practical car, plus some of the later models (like 09) have better / more reliable parts that I envy.

Having owned one of the later model GTS's, 2016, I can say they do have a very distinct sound that you will recognize any place. The only down side of owning a Maserati is the maintenance. It was common to spend at least $2k-$3k yearly in maintenance for the car. And that was driving it well below the 12k average miles per year. You also have the same interior issues as seen in Ferrari, sticky buttons are still an issue as with the leather dash starting to lift at the edges. If you plan on owning one be sure to budget in your maintenance costs.

V8s are great in general - whether Italian, British or American. But that Maserati IS something else - you get that angry, flaring start up and potent burbly idle - and blip-ability. And it's got that fantastic hard, but mellow and musical crescendo, with an equally wide dramatic repertoire on the overrun with everything from a husky rasp for a short fuel/ignition pause when a gear change happens, to some noticeable but very well muffled crackles on a trailing throttle or lifting completely - nothing so vulgar as spitting pops and bangs! You would travel a long way to find a more characterful, ebullient and operatic motor - truly wonderful. I also prefer it (along with many other 8-cylinder engines) to V10s whose banshee scream slightly sets my teeth on edge. In fact I'd go as far as to say I prefer a 5-cylinder to a V10!
Great article and for sure a very ressonably priced way of owning such a wonderful piece of Italian engineering with the proviso of course that the initial purchase cost is very much merely the prologue to a book where subsequent chapters entail additional commitments 😆😆

G'day Jason. Thanks for the great video. I just want to say that my parents owned a Series 1 Quattroporte, AND a Maserati Mexico (the original QP example shown in the video), both at the same time. Both were great cars. I also have to say that buying a Maserati these days has to be the same as my Laverda Formula purchase - as I was looking at the bike, & thinking; "This is the wrong thing to do. I should not buy this bike, but I just have to have it." Thanks again.

Great post! I have my QP 2006 Duoselect (4,2) 10th year now. Totally happy! Got it with 35000km, now 105000km. Clutch replaced at 75000km (with 25% material left). The initial bad press on the Duoselect was surely well deserved. But after software updates solving the issue through normal services within some years. Cars serviced at Maserati are switching gears nice and fast, at least since 2011. I have thought of changing for a newer car (2009-2012), but these cars are longer, heavier and with a torque converter. I prefer the Duoselect - it sounds much better and is faster. Today I runned it in sports mode manual without slide control - it is fantastic and it revs / sound just best of worlds!
