The Ferrari Roma is a return to Italian elegance | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 06

- The Roma is a sign that things are changing at Ferrari. For the last decade or so, Ferrari's sports cars have gotten more and more aggressive in looks - that's the opposite of the cars that Enzo Ferrari loved: comfortable, drivable GTs.
In this episode, we examine the meaning behind the Gran Turismo - and how it's an obsolete term today. But also how the Roma, more so than the Ferrari California upon which it's based, is a return to the idea of an everyday Ferrari.
It has adaptive cruise control, free scheduled maintenance, and a back seat. And while it has a rear spoiler, it has no button to make it go up and down - perhaps a way of saying, "leave those showoff antics to the Lamborghini owners."
It is a modern Ferrari, after all, so it has a twin-turbocharged flat-plane-crank V-8; light and incredibly precise electric power steering; an instant-shifting 8-speed dual-clutch automatic; and suspension tuning that makes it feel as though it weighs just 2500 lb.
And it's elegant. And beautiful. It is, alas, a real Ferrari.

Jason could make me fall in love with a mid 90s chevy fwd sedan. He makes any car seem like the greatest specimen of its time
Summed it up perfectly. I legit want a V60 polestar because of him
that's the brilliance in his approach
You're totally right! But is it me or at some angles he looks too much like Adam Sandler? LOL...
Gen 1 caravan with 2.2 turbo is where its at. Bottom end and trans can take 600/600 hp/trq at the wheels and an LSD is like $350.
Well there is one I feel in love with a 90s fwd GM car at least..
Pontiac grand prix by Mclaren. So much cool tech for the time. So cool looking. Refined by Mclaren. Shame they never sold them here in Germany
Another brilliant video review from Jason Cammisa. Great job blending perspective, wit, and essential info.
Cammisa day! 😁
that gear selector is a slap in the face
Nice Mazda.
not only the ferrari Roma but according to the rumors that ferrari is also working on an one off version off the f-40
I can look at a new Ferrari again and feel something
The Roma gives me 612 Scaglietti vibes. An underappreciated gem of a car.
I was on the fence put my deposit down after a test drive it's a wonderful Ferarri
That's definitely because of the grill
The 612 and the 456. Both were smooth and elegant and both are highly underrated even today.
True. Pretty much all the front engines GTs are underappreciated.
Lies again? Ferrero Rocher Fasting Ramadan
Jason I hope Hagerty is paying you enough because you are carrying this channel, lol. Not only is your content interesting, but you always talk about uncommon car topics and I always learn something. Damn entertaining as well. Take care and thanks!
Hey what about hagerty's red line rebuilds? I would say theyre carrying this channel more so
@@daviddefortier5970 honestly I haven’t heard of them, I’ll have to look into it.
@@curtr.5083 For real? The Redline Rebuild series is by far the most popular and viewed on the channel.
@@A-Town-ft8dx I think Jason appeals to the car history and engineering nerds. The wrenching shows are completely boring to me because on a free Saturday afternoon, I'd rather be behind the wheel than under the car.
@@HandsomeAlex25 that’s a solid argument!
5:30 - That's the only reason why I bought my last car.
The key smelled good.
Glen?! This was the last channel I thought I'd see in the comments 😅
What car was that?
Anthony Esposito, your lighting and photography work on those videos is simply outstanding!
I see a video from Jason. I click! It’s that simple!
I was about to say that. I can listen to this man ramble about basically anything. What a treasure.
@@arup02 That's why I listened to Carmuddgeon!
If only he had his own channel lol
Yep. We click before we watch
How many times has that line been used by how many people and still getting how many likes?
I just discovered this channel and already love it! I was a teenager that had many 1:18 Ferrari models and always knew the latest gossip about future models. But over the last decade it's true that they're no longer beautiful and there are soooo many special editions. I could list off all of the Ferraris from 1980 until 2000, but I don't actually know what their current range is. It'll be interesting to see what happens over the next decade.
"Do Not Attempt". Don't worry, I can't afford to.
One day you will.
The Ferrari Roma is what made me love Ferrari again, the elegance and beauty we expect is finally delivered, for fun I would rather drive a Porsche, however, this is what Ferrari should be, the beauty behind the madness, not the madness itself🙃
Well written, very well executed and performed, this guy has a great sense of humour & personality.
I like how he doesn't try to be funny all the time, nor target the casual audience. He makes content for people who are into cars and then adds enough humor so t's not so dry.
One of the best car journalists.
personality, humour, why you cry that?
Except the "dolce vita" part, I was cringing so hard
@@wolfsworkshop9095 Yes Dulce and Dolce are worlds apart (culturally) especially for someone with an Italian surname. Disgrazia!!
Imagine if Jason was your college lecturer, how much stuff would you learn? Love the tongue-in-cheek and unapologetic approach - a true petrolhead/design aficionado. His reviews on the 924 and Saab 900 Turbo are brilliant
Pretty much every single revelation and drag race videos of Jason are work of art ..
They are true masterpiece of automotive journalism ...
"Depending on your point of view. Both are probably valid" LMFAOO
Yep, I've been saying this ever since the 812 was premiered - Ferrari is swapping elegance and beauty with monstrous performance and hideously aggressive designs.
Good to see Roma taking a step back
Finally someone telling the truth that every other journalist can't tell❤️❤️ jason is the best
@Black Dad Clarkson and Hammond are still a bit of an ass tbh, I liked May more than those two. But Camissa here is so knowledgeable about the history, especially the buisness bits and the tiff between VW and Ferrari. Another classic example of ruining masterpieces by greedy corporates.
I still don't understand why exactly ferrari had to make a cheap move like sf90? They made the ultra exclusive la ferrari as one of the greatest things on road and pumped out a 1000 hp hybrid sport in half of the price! Didn't that just ruined the purpose of existence of a car like la ferrari? This is the same thing McLaren did with 720s where they made that car so fast by putting the P1 gasoline engine in that thing and it smashed every cars in a drag race, later people found out they are cheating on HP figures.
It was just a personal thought.
any Tesla is faster...
@@lucasrem True.
But that’s not the point. It’s much as I am in awe of their performance and accomplishments as I’ve driven and been driven in them... they are antiseptic experience that doesn’t capture my heart the way the Ferrari can or other cars special cars with even far less power. It’s not just about what you do, it’s how you do it.
@@lucasrem i'd rather own a proper car than a tech product. You can have your 0-200 and your 1/4 mile numbers all you want. When that corner comes up, you'll be dead in the water and I wont even bother talking about driver engagement. Keep your fast RC, i want a real car.
@@elwingy meanwhile I'm just here happy with my 180hp manual miata that gets passed by minivans on the highway :)
7:45 Marchionne "brilliant businessman, not a car guy and definitely not a brand guy"
PERFECT
I mean, you can hate on Marchionne for gutting Ferrari, that's valid. But he's also the guy who salvaged Alfa Romeo.
Love these stories. Cammisa's best work by far.
Funny, I find California like the best positioned Ferrari of its time. Between v8 high performance models and v12 GT, there should be Ferrari's version of Miata. No brains model, made usable in daily life, made for crusing mediterranean roads with your wife after you left kids at grandparents. If anyting with 450hp it was too powerfull, and with 4.5 meter of length it was too big. The price of all that was weight of 1700+ kg. With that mass I doubt the steering was exceptional and there is more than one YT video with drivers losing control because of power steering.
I think there is a place for luxurius cabriolet of: ~300 bhp, 1200 kg and size of about 4m. Not a track car but exceptional sporty daily drive designed for optimal perfromance well below 200 km/h. Something like extremely well made Miata/Elise/Boxer/356 with Ferrari branding would actualy be a great poster car, maybe even the poster card.
I am not talking about mass produced cheap ferrari. Make it rare, make it expensive. But something which is actualy a car to be driven at road, and not designed for track or to be bought as investment. Top Gun 2 has a poster shot of Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connelly standing in front of 1970's Carrera. I doubt Top Gun 3 is gonna have any 2008-2022 Ferrari in similar shot 30 years from now as nobody can sold you illusion of 458/480/812 being a "usable" car. Mass apeal is must for luxurius brand, and it seems to me that little by little Ferrari is loosing that image as modern cars are more in a "statement first car second" territory.
The GOAT of car reviews bringing the 🔥 again
11:34 Damn that tingles
How have I missed this show for TWO years???? I can't stop watching!
Montezemolo deserves all the praise he's been given, he is a genius and a madman in a good sense. He was maybe the only guy on the planet who could replace Enzo Ferrari, and look what cars he gave us in the last decades. He brought Schumacher, Todt and Brawn to the scuderia, he WAS Ferrari as much as Enzo himself. And now take a look what Ferrari has become without him, car after car that seam just like random Sportscars (SF90, F8 wtf?) this Roma is the only hope that they'll maybe not ruin the brand, but I guess with the SUV all hope is gone.
I cannot agree more but if SUV models can keep the Ferrari alive and fund the development of delightful cars in future, I can turn my judging eyes away from them. I won't welcome, but I will tolerate.
Or is it? I think the Purosangue is magnificent
@selkhadian Maybe if Ferrari focused more on making their version of the Bentley SUV or Range Rover
Cammisa’s screen presence is unmatched. Such a charismatic presenter with humor and intelligence that just draws you. Keep it up.
As an English man I can honestly say no1 comes close to Clarkson as the master of Comedy car journalism, this is also why Too gear when Clarkson Hammond and May were presenters it was the most watched TV program in the world.
I love these videos. The presentation keeps you so interested! I have been a fan of Jason since I watched his 190E vs E30 video. Great presenter!

"The key that Jason Cammisa sniffed" is definitely gonna show up on E-bay one day for thousands.
The Roma is hands down my favourite Ferrari right now, and that’s saying something considering my neighbour has a 812 SF on his driveway.
As much as J love how the Roma arouses Daytona-esque feelings of elegance and prominence in me, I’m sorry, but the 812 still takes the cake.
Completely different ends of the spectrum though considering the 812 is the V12 GT and this is the “lower” end GT.
Damn where do you live? My neighbor has needles in his driveway lol
Nice neighborhood. Mine's full of CUV's and pickup trucks.
My neighbors don’t have a driveway.
Someone must live in some absurdly fucking rich suburb of Toronto or Vancouver... -_-
Anything with a screen will age quicker than ever.
But you you make GT car without a screen in 2021, then its out dated from the factory.
@@DuBstep115 That’s why you make them so you can just put an iPad or whatever in the same location but, that might be to Toyota for The prancing horse...

It's just another generic coupe , aston vantage, jag ftype . It's striking but bland at the same time . I'd rather buy a second late 2000s aston martin dbs .
i understood that reference...
The Corvette C8 ZO6 has a flat plane crank V8 I don't know if it is supercharged or N/A but besides that, it is not even out yet. N/A V8's are dying ONLY if the manufacture kills it. Thankfully American sports cars are going to hold on to their V8's. Cross plane or Flat plane.
Holy smokes one of the best car videos ever, this Roma looks amazing and the history is fascinating. Damn the professionals are coming to kill the dumb fanboy reviewers.
"Back in the day when almost all cars sucked, GT was code for a car that didn´t suck."
Loving this straightforward explanation from Jason. :D
Always loved more front engined Ferraris more.... 250tr, 250 lusso, 500 superfast, 340 spider and even modern 550 Maranello, 456, f12 and of course this beauty
Totally 👍
This video explains why Porsche, McLaren, and Lamborghini will always be better than pretentious “Ferarri’s”
Thank you, as a Porsche guy I still think the Ferrari's of the last years looked wrong, but I loved the old Ferrari's for their looks.
But as The Grand Tour has shown us. Old cars looks stunning but they suck to drive.
Super video and good points all.
Looks....looks like an F-type. A lot. A very lot.
Yes, it really does (he says to the Ferrari owner who just paid triple the F-type)........
I actually like the Ian McCullum and team design, original, better by a lot. The Ferrari seems to be trying too hard. That is not what a Ferrari should do. And the F-type has real buttons and a better interior design. Wow....I actually said that out loud. Sorry, but it is true.
Jason is on a level no other car reviewer can even comprehend
I'm wondering when car makers (at all price levels) are going to understand we don't want adaptive cruise control and additional crap. In fact, a lot of us want as minimal electronics possible. I'm cool with roll up windows. We want F40 stlye cars as far as additional equipment and not what's currently being produced. Just because they can do certain things with tech doesn't mean we even want or need it. As long as I have a Bluetooth radio, I need nothing else. Nothing. Not even built in navigation. I have that on my 6 year old phone that still serves me very well and will work with bluetooth.
I have seen so many other channels but somehow the videos of Hagerty have that perfect combination of exceptional video, interesting in-depth topics and the most unique presentations. Im lucky to have stumbled upon this channel.
Love these videos but disagree with the California. I think it’s beautiful and is the return to the flowing lines that you lament the loss of in the other models, including the T and Portafino.
Ferrari knocked it out of the park with this one. Sophisticated and stylish, but still a performer. Like a GT should be.
love these, PLEASE keep them coming
Seen one at the store a couple of months ago, was kinda obvious the guy wearing a red Ferrari polo and a red Ferrari baseball cap was the owner.
I can't call it an attractive car to me (not that I could afford it), but I think the badge is the only thing that matters to someone wanting to buy it.
I live for Jason's Thursday episodes
I like for him to rant like this with fellow carmudgeon Derek Tham Hyphen Scott on Issimi... But this will suffice.
Jason is one of the greats. Great story telling, writing, presenting….all of it. Well done.
It still is a originally intended Maserati's project turned into a Ferrari's one (Alfieri -> Roma).
I love the fact that you can't put the spoiler up!! Biggest pet peeve...people who park their cars with them up. They were designed to be down and maintain the sleek lines.....otherwise they would have put fixed spoilers on!!
Counterpoint: Some people like them up and it's OK for the owners to be able to choose. It's their car and they should get to do with it what makes them happy. Gatekeeping spoiler placement, sheesh.
until it breaks in the up position.....
I remember the ad when it first came out. I agree this is the most beautiful Ferrari in the modern age. Hands down
And the name Roma can be a beautiful girl as beautiful as Roma the car is. Stunning
The red looks even better
Ferrari one the best bus 🚌 in the USA tho,....I remember when my black neighbour sprayed paint his wife red and but a big Ferrari sign in her forehead ((Ferrari/Blm)) tho
Knobs and buttons are what we want, yet manufacturers keep taking them away. It's madness
the screens in the cars ! We already have enough tech around us. Definitely buttons and knobs enhance the experience of being in a super car.
Bentley continental still keeps those though
Bring back actual dials and controls instead of iPads everywhere 😑
Jason, you were made for this. Ridiculously enjoyable on every episode. Keep up the great work, and the passion flowing!
The designer obviously looked at the new FType and thought yep that will do ..
I love this Roma! Beautiful simple design. Not overdoing it like some of their other cars. Less is more!
That’s what gt class meant compare to other car. Pretty crazy how those type of generic car label are phasing out. The successor for Enzo had great idea and engineering. I love the engineering, especially the modena and f430. From all of its modern line up, if I had that funds to do it, I’ll pick up a Roma.
I feel like Jason was channeling his inner Alton Brown in this episode
100%
California hideous?
Hideous all the facelift 458 Italia
This guy describes cars and how good or bad there are so well!
I'd have a real hard time buying this car, if what he says about the start button is true.
So good! I didn’t want the video to end.
He could have done a 30 minute deep dive, and we would have been captivated the whole time!
@@dougrobinson8602 yes!

Jason has an aura of multiple personalities when he speaks and doesn't need a cohost in the video to have two perspectives while reviewing.
Pronunciation game too strong!
Feels like he really cares about every named technology to preserve its originality.

Fatastic review..... btw Ferrari spent $10m developing a manual gearbox for the original California. Only 3 were sold with a manual. Porsche people may want a GT3 manual but Ferrari's customers dont.
It’s kind of fitting that the first B-reel you show is the Ferrari Pop-Up Store in front of Plaza 66 on Nanjing road…. Ferraris are ubiquitous in Shanghai/China. They are literally everywhere! And it has cheapened the brand immensely. It is no longer a special event to see one… you can find one in any car-park!
Anecdotally; a few years ago (which in reality is something like 10) a person I know in Tampa was looking to sell his Testarossa, I gave it a long, long, long thought (didn’t do it - but probably should have. Anyway…) I showed the photos to a friend here to ask him what he thought about it; his response was overwhelmingly NEGATIVE. To him it was a used car and an old-fashioned car and therefore NOT worth the $90,000 that was being asked! YIKES! Tough crowd!
Ferrari's stop being "Ferrari's" when they became TT powered. Bowing to emissions "guidelines". Which in itself is ODD to me as companies like Lamborghini continue to put out naturally aspirated cars. Audi still has their NA R8 and Porsche the 911 GT3. So why not Ferrari???
..."douchbags"...something I totally agree with but never thought a journalist would say. The reality is...sports cars and supercars ARE for douchbags. That's how they're going to be driven. Realistically. In the city along side a Prius. Driven by people with a lot of money and "street/city driving experience". 06 percent of powers I'm better have no competitive racing experience...on a race track. Were never ex-F1 champions. So no one is going to have the skill to push these cars even IF they did take them on race tracks on "Track Days" (where the public can take their cars onto the track). IRONIC.
The only cars really needed for city/suburbia driving are SUV's and GT cars. GT cars for "point and squirt" stoplight to stoplight driving. On less than perfect roads (pot holes, grease, gravel...).
It's funny. Boys grow up dreaming of owning a supercar. Some grow up and realize they would never be able to push those cars even halfway to their potential (on a track or on city roads...and live). Many don't grow up and realize this...so sports cars and supercars continue to sell. Guys keep asking their parents for money to modify their "ricers" (Fast/Furious cars) putting ugly "race" body kits on them and adding loud exhausts. Knowing full well they will be driving next to that Prius. Hoping to impress guys who don't have wealthy parents. And pickup a bimbo.
