I had wanted a Quattroporte for 10 years. After doing my research, the best advice I got from a Maserati specialist was "Buy the best one you can afford". So, I had my heart set on this very model, the rare Sport GTS (only 53 RHD examples are registered in the UK). I had test-driven a couple of different cars and 24 hours after this very video came out, I tracked the dealer down but this black on black version was sold that very same day for £34,500 (The Sport GTS cost new with options £118,000) and have bottomed out as far as depreciation goes. They are getting very collectable and sought after and so rarely come onto the market, but I found my perfect car, in the spec, I would have chosen had I ordered it new from the Maserati Factory - Grigio Granito body (Gun Metal Grey) with contrasting Marrone Corniola (Chestnut leather) interior. I have owned mine for 8 months now and every journey feels special with a real sense of occasion, whether thundering along a great driving road, or sat with my family with a boot full of luggage in a traffic jam in the rain, the cabin feels (and sounds) like a private jet. It is also one of those rare machines, like an Aston, that people will hear you coming and they smile and wave and chat to you when you park. It's not "flash" and you never see another one of the roads, the exclusivity and being different is part of the attraction, along with that Ferrari V8 and the most addictive soundtrack from those monster exhausts. Audi and BMW drivers in my experience are the only ones that tend to get upset when you leave them for dust with a blip of the throttle. In the 8 months, I have had mine, I have driven 6,000 miles and it hasn't missed a beat. My only observation is that the mighty Maserati is prone to eat rear tyres, as I just replaced a pair after only 4,000 miles of 'spirited' driving and 20" Pirelli P-Zeros aren't cheap, but it's cheaper (and more exciting) than a crack habit! However, I just paid to have the wheel alignment checked by laser today, which is well worth paying £60 for, as mine was off by 4mm which explains the uneven wear on the rear. If you are thinking of buying one, do - as you'll always regret it if you don't and they will never be better value than they are now. Just do your homework, pay to get it looked over or buy from a specialist and buy the best one you can afford for years of motoring pleasure ahead.
Hi Grant, spotted your comment and hope you're still enjoying the car. I've heard that the reason you get quicker tyre wear is because the stability control and traction control are slightly applying the brakes during your spirited drives. There's not much you can do about it unless you wanted to turn it all off, but at least you now know the cause.
@@PutSomeDsonThatBlink or is it spirited drives lose traction which causes tyres wear, wanting to take off fast needs grip. Hi Harry, I have the Awards Edition Quattroporte Sport GTS - only 126 made - and its right hand drive with just 15,000 miles. So rare. And I adore it. By the way, it was fitted with Skyhook at the factory not Bilstein in the awards spec, which is much better version than on the Granturismo- as I have owned one so can feel the difference. The awards edition is a very different experience to the standard Sport GTS , which surprised me when I tested it. It still has the wonderful sound but feels softer and more controlled - and better for it. This is my 4th Quattroporte - a 4.2, a 4.2 executive GT, 4.7 sport GTS with Bilstein shocks, and now the awards edition. Also owned a 4.7 Granturismo and the a 3.0S Ghibli, which was horrid - which is why I went back to naturally aspirated V8. Your review was spot on, exactly explained the the ownership experience - especially the more practical usability compared to the Granturismo. Most people are put off by the possible costs, but I have to say, not much has gone wrong in any I have owned - and I buy 3 year warranty packages for added protection. One thing you missed probably was that in ‘sport’ mode the gearbox mapping is different, blips the throttle on braking, holds on to gears longer and releases more power to the throttle movements, also holding onto gears longer. Stays in 5th at cruise for better response at high speed. One thing that is intoxicating is the pops and bangs and woofles of the exhaust on the overrun, especially if you hold on to 2nd or 3rd in manual mode. Thank you for making my day by reviewing what I think is a modern classic and is one of the best looking cars you’ll ever see. Your are so right - the new designs of the big cars from BMW and Mercedes don’t blow you away and can’t be differentiated from their smaller siblings. Sorry this is such a long comment - but I am a besotted enthusiast. But Finally, I know you are a fantastic driver - try the QP on a dry track as I have and experience the neutral handling that is so predictable. You’ll see how good it can be at the limit. Love your reviews here in New Zealand where my Awards Edition is the only one in North Island - the most rare car here bar none!
I’m now an old 70 year old fart, it’s taken me this long, I owe it to my father, he freelanced for this fabulous company, plus the other one. He was close friends to Giovanni Michelotti. Pinnacle of Italian engineering. Pinnacle of a good sounding engine. And very beautiful, Pininfarina at its best. And as usual excellent presentation by gentleman Harry. Thank you.
When I get in one of these beautiful machines it never fails to bring a smile to my face. It's the same engine as fitted to a Ferrari California. Pure brilliance..love it.
Perfect in every way. Elegant just enough power great sound makes every drive an occasion. Would pick it up over any modern day turbo uber saloon let alone SUV. Needless to say Maseratti completely cocked it up under Marchionne with volume chasing so thankfull to have an opportunity to enjoy one from when they were best. Thank you Harry.

Seems a hallmark of pininfarina designs (with me at least), first you dont think much of them at all but the longer you look the better it gets with time
Another wonderful offering from Harry, a proper Petrol’s heads review of very proper petrol heads car. What the hell are we going to do when cars like this are not around anymore ?
They'll always be around. They'll run out of precious metals and minerals long before every combustion engine is replaced with batteries, which incidentally have less life than an engine. But dont tell the ecomentalists that
chappy2121 not to mention man made petrol. I think Audi did it a year or two ago or almost completed the project. You’re right we will never not have these. They will outlive us and this Maserati will be at pebble beach in a hundred years.
I am so glad that Harry finally made a review on my favourite car although it is more than 6 years old and hence not yet an old timer. I bought mine which is the S version and it is the best car I have ever owned (had a 911, XJ12, Daimler Double Six and 2 750i before) As I don’t like the new model I had the chance to buy a second same Quattroporte S last year with only 32.000 km on it in order to have spare one, this to say how much I love it. Every day I enjoy driving it and looking at it and people don’t seem to realise it is also soo old.
I'm absolutely certain these will be special, cherished cars in the far future. That's precisely what separates it from the new gen... Let's hope the price doesn't go ballistic, on account of the relatively high quantity produced. Designed and sounds like no saloon before or after. Absolute gem.
I have a 2014 Quattroporte S Q4 in stellar condition with only 56000 miles. It still draws looks and comments. The 3.8L Biturbo is a monster. Magnificent vehicle with no mechanical issues. Fast, Fast, and hugs the road on 21" rims and Continental tires. Love it.
I have the most vivid memory of being on holiday in 2009; wandering the streets of Rome, hearing the most incredible exhaust note, looking for the source of said exhaust and catching a glimpse of a dark coloured Quattroporte flash past the end of the street. Marvelous!
Although my husband and I are privileged to own exceptional cars both in terms of engineering and design, I sorely miss my late stepfather’s 2008 quattroporte gts. The design of this generation of the venerable quattroporte will stand the test of time, and I’m delighted to see Harry highlight this in what I can best describe as a loving tribute to this grossly undervalued car.

Saw one of these today as I was filling up my F50 make that CRV. Thanks to Harry I was able to appreciate exactly what I was looking at. Classic, classy shape.
The sound of that car is addictive. Nursing the throttle at mid range revs, the engine sounds are so throaty and bassey. It sings to you in Italian to remind you how much horsepower is under your toes ;)

Changed out entire cooling system, variator, 3engine mounts, all suspension bushings, front control arm bushings, updated 3 (yes, three) Foçal beryllium copper front speakers w/ 30pin-to-bluetooth converter. Brand new again at 52k miles! Harry great review of this Maserati as well as the GT. It's allways great to hear the perspective of an actual owner and someone who understands the brand and what it is striving for. As a previous owner of a qp5, 2 ghiblis and a qp6 I agree that they lost a bit of their design flair in the new version. Though I will say the qp6 brings a much needed update to the interior and makes for a fantastic daily driver while still maintaining that Maserati flair and driving dynamic. This brand is misunderstood and many reviews knock it for maintenance and high cost without having any real experience with out outside of a 30min drive and a look at its quarks and features. Thanks for the honest review!
I totally agree with the styling thing. When I park my old E92 next to a new 4 series I wonder where the simple but elegant lines have gone. New cars are way too over styled these days
Torque of the Devil So true, the e92 is one of the best looking BMW’s ever made, the 4 series just doesn’t do it for me, overstyled and a bloated rear end

I did drive the same type Maserati GTS 4,7 and I do fully agree with your review. The Maserati is full emotion, not alone the sound but also the driving, the style and the comfort. This car is epic...after 20 years still very nice. Try to compare this Maserati with the design of 20 years old BMW 7 series, Mercedes class S or Audi A8...... looks like a prehystoric design.
One of these passed me in the city in which I live a few months ago. What a sound under acceleration, unforgettable and the best I've heard for a non race car.

@@davideslava3526 I miss that configurator and would kill to play about with it one more time. All configurators since - Maserati or otherwise - are clunky, annoying, slow and just an exercise in frustration. The Quattroporte's was a bonafide pastime
Same here! I remember specing all interior options as blue (because that was a thing in 03) and then just seeing how high i could get the price by selecting every option. I have £15k spare soon, I might be a bit too tempted. Slightly understated which makes it classy, and FAR better looking than the Flying Spur which is really the only 4dr that competes from a luxury manufacturer.
Totally understand it. My father had one a few years ago but sold it.
Great story, enjoy! Must be an amazing place to own such a car..
Awesome write up Nigel! Where in NZ are you? Im in Wellington, would love to photo your car!
Wow ! Any chance of posting a video ? Love to see it .
jam 68 that’s a good idea, I might just do that 😀
Dan Hayston Hi Dan, I’m in Auckland, North Shore
I’m now an old 70 year old fart, it’s taken me this long, I owe it to my father, he freelanced for this fabulous company, plus the other one. He was close friends to Giovanni Michelotti. I think your the best reviewer I have ever come across. Not many things bring tears to my eyes, and make the hairs on my neck stand up, brilliant, well done and thank you. Problem is “her” who commands, lol
Not only the best soundin but probably the best looking too. What a fantastic thing
Agree all day long ;)
I think that sums it up.
Yeah very sleek “billionaire” looking. Worth the money
Pinnacle of Italian engineering. Pinnacle of a good sounding engine. And very beautiful, Pininfarina at its best.
And as usual excellent presentation by gentleman Harry. Thank you.
This is my dreamcar. The sound , the looks , the maserati logo , the Heritage only i would take the multispoke rims.
Pick up an off-lease Jaguar XJR for a song. It rivals or beats the Quattro in every category.
John Richards If sound is also a category, then No
They’re forever depreciating. You could seriously find one for about 30-40k
When I get in one of these beautiful machines it never fails to bring a smile to my face. It's the same engine as fitted to a Ferrari California. Pure brilliance..love it.
Richard no it's not. This engine is unique to the Q4 it was developed by Ferrari but was never in one.
Except the horrible reliability and the very poor build quality of course.
@@joost6994 Not by standards back than and esp. not this particular model (GTS ) ... Skyhook suspension was told to have some problems and it was bashed mercileselly by journalist's but everything else worked fine ... especially if you consider that at that time all carmakers had big quality issues (V 10 by BMW, MB electronics, Ferraris autobox's etc.)
@@dalibormilic139 you know if you buy a Maserati, you get crap build quality. Even today. Typical Italian, and it should remain that way. Ever since Lamborghini was taken over by VAG, it lost it's identity. Let's hope Maserati stays the way they are.
I test drove a Granturismo S many years ago and have loved them since. A very classy car.
karl sumner so you wasted a dealers time, congrats well done
There's one of them in town here where I live and I always hear it coming whenever I'm out and about. Beautiful sounding car
Worldwide Darts nice to see you here Worldwide! 👌 didn’t know you were into cars!
@@hxduck Yep, I've been into cars since a liitle kid when I had Road & Track as well as Car & Driver magazines show up to the house every month.
When I got older I wanted to either work for Road & Track or work for a ski resort in Colorado. I ended up working for a ski resort most of the 1990s.
Anyone else on Autotrader looking at these right now?!
No.. This could be one of the worst financial decisions anyone could ever make..
I can only find 1 sport gts model like this one. 2010 model, same colour, 32,000 miles, £25k.
@@Aristocrafied Not as bad financially as it was for the first owner though ;-)
@@brendanfleming6584 true but theres a reason why it's nowhere near as expensive as it was. The maintenance on those cars is no joke. For a car that is supposed to get you places it sure is on the side of the road often too
@@Aristocrafied yes if you buy a 2003 with the duo-select gearbox it is not the best one financially. But the later models qp5's with the auto gearbox are really not that bad. The F430 engine is pretty strong (except for the cam chain adjusters, but there is a fix for it).
Bought one this summer. Sport GTS, 26,000kms. Silver exterior with black seats and red trim inside, every carbon option and MC Sportline pack. Absolutely loving it.
Superb video, content and commentary once again from the enthusiastic car-nut expert. Many thanks Harry.
I remember feeling very depressed when Clarkson presented the Vantage V12 as the end of an era with lots of drama. We've moved on since. Unfortunately. Good thing we've got Harry now reminding us of the good times, with more videos coming along very soon! 😉
Content like this is why Harry’s Garage is my favorite RUclips channel. Thanks again Harry!
Have just seen The Intouchables movie which starts with Quattroporte spurt through the traffic... what a great timing to have it thoroughly reviewed, thanks Harry!
I love almost everything about this car ever since I saw and heard the first one. This and maybe a V10 M5 are the high water mark in totally insane big sports saloons. They are so special cause they seam to make no sense at all. That's why they make perfect sense.
Killed me with this one, Harry. I'm glued to the classifieds. I was in one of these in Geneva Switzerland in likely 2012. My first taste of Italian metal... Bringing back the memories!! What a noise!
How are you going to handle the maintenance costs and repairs which is a very common expense?

@max Milano.. it’s just a shame that Americans don’t understand that Maserati is about passion, love and yes engines!! But thanks to guys like Dough de Muro they don’t like it because the seats are squeaking or the ash tree is to small etcetera.. and that’s ridiculous! I actually thought it was a modern car when I first saw it (I'm far from a car expert), then he said 2013 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS, still looks gorgeous. Also, I think modern BMW's look hideous.
@Adnansky Very true that, old style BMW's are some of my favourite cars of all time. I never bullied every kid at school though! :)
You will be surprised to learn that it was first introduced 15 years ago
Same here. Can’t stand BMWs look on most models now I think they look awful😩
I remember it as the car you could spec with the craziest interior colour combinations in the online configurator 😁
Love it!
Reds and blues, yellow stitching, greys, whites...
*sigh*
The same when i was 15
At first I thought it was a horrendous looking car, but now it's one of my favourite looking cars ever.
Same here.
Seems a hallmark of pininfarina designs (with me at least), first you dont think much of them at all but the longer you look the better it gets with time
I still think it's horrendous
Jaguar S type similar situation for me.
Another wonderful offering from Harry, a proper Petrol’s heads review of very proper petrol heads car.
What the hell are we going to do when cars like this are not around anymore ?
MrDallman - I really is a sad thought but it is inevitable- mind you the 2012 Fisker is a pretty good looking car but alas, not a V8 or V12 🙁
MrDallman we are going to die and the next generations will have other things on their mind
We are going to fade away . . . And I won’t mind. My final thought will be gratitude for having lived through humankind's golden moment.
17:08 Harry sounding a bit Tiff-esque there! :-D
The sound on the overrun is just heavenly!
Su-perb. People are begging for a 355 manual review.
Love it.
This car is just 4 door Masterpiece. Have to add this to my garage!
I have the most vivid memory of being on holiday in 2009; wandering the streets of Rome, hearing the most incredible exhaust note, looking for the source of said exhaust and catching a glimpse of a dark coloured Quattroporte flash past the end of the street. Marvelous!
Cooler than the coolest of cool things, perfect set of wheels for the aspiring hit man.

Yeah, Harry, ain't it grand? Now go off to that other channel.
@Harold Sweathead and proud of it
Ive loved these cars for years. Stunning lines and that engine tone is fabulous. Not bad value for money in 2019. You'd struggle to find anything better for your money. Great video Harry

Sounds awesome! That being said I think the E60 M5 sounds more epic with that screaming v10.
You've sold me on the 2012 S model. Now I have to begin the hunt.
Harry, there’s a lovely example for sale on AT. Black with a hazelnut interior, £25k. Can’t think of much else with that sort of glorious engine and timeless design for that money.
Matthew Hall I saw that one. 😎
I don't care if we reach planet Mars today. Harry's video on a first-gen Quattroporte GTS is the most relevant thing I'm seeing all day.
What a gorgeous car, especially compared to the overstyled successor. I've always rather fancied one myself.
You are not alone
And every modern german competitor. All so overstyled, no timeless designs anymore

Have my upvote.
I have a 2009 QP executive GT 4.7 since new. Changed out entire cooling system, variator, 3engine mounts, all suspension bushings, front control arm bushings, updated 3 (yes, three) Foçal beryllium copper front speakers w/ 30pin-to-bluetooth converter.
Brand new again at 52k miles!
I can afford any new cars (& hav test-driven countless) but cannot find anything worthy to replace my Maserati QP 4.7...it's a sonorous GT saloon that devours continents for the under-stated sporting gentleman.
With that noise and looks, I am willing to forgive this car for anything. This is coming from an Aston Martin Vantage V8 owner.
The vantage has alot of things you need to forgive it for xD
Ditto.
You are the most qualified and trustworthy reviewer on you tube
I own a 2005 Quattroporte with 58000 miles very reliable miles and the original clutch with 60% wear. I only drive on manual sport mode. I also a 2012 Granturismo S 20000 miles auto with mc shift and mc suspension options. I am very satisfied with the reliability of both cars and will keep them for life. They are timeless works of art that are very well engineered cars with Italian soul
What a detailed , profound, exhaustive review... not a simple ad as it has become a general rule on other channels
@@Tom-zq6um yup they are overstyled, bloated and boy-racer in mind. Makes me appreciate mazda kodo thing even more. New mazda3 dont even have foglamp at the front bumper, for a cleaner look. Simple.
Qaiyim Yes I really like the Mazda design language at the moment the new Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 are very good looking cars and a simple shape which will date nicely unlike the 4 series
They also all look the same
I did drive the same type Maserati GTS 4,7 and I do fully agree with your review. The Maserati is full emotion, not alone the sound but also the driving, the style and the comfort. I felt that this 15 yrs old type is perfection in many ways, far away from main stream - this car is a classic statement. I love it. Thank you for this great review.
Really enjoyed this one Harry, I actually felt like I was sitting in the front passenger seat during the whole driving part.
Great car, really unique. 👍
It’s such a beautiful thing when one can find enjoyment through the craftsmanship and design of an object. I really enjoy watching your videos as you transport me to another place as I sit back and listen to your story telling. I may personally never experience most of the vehicles on such a personal level but I do get a true connection through your words. Thanks for sharing. Life is good.

I'm not a Ferrari fan, but the F12 and Quattroporte/GranTurismo with the F136 engines are my favourite-sounding cars of all time.
Harry is so spot on about what a Maserati and driving a Maserati is for. "Arriving, elegance and so now and then reminding people you're driving a 'Maserahti'"

I love the way you describe the Maserati in a proper way as a masterpiece of timeless engineering. When I get mine I will definitely have some pajamas for it!! What an amazing car!
This car is epic...after 20 years still very nice. Try to compare this Maserati with the design of 20 years old BMW 7 series, Mercedes class S or Audi A8...... looks like a prehystoric design.
Wonderful film. Just love the closing blast! A lustful love story with a superb saloon. Thank you Harry, another best of breed rosette!
The only reason I came here is because Harry understands how important the Quattroporte gts is as a saloon. Thanks

How many hours did I spend on the configurator? Millions
Felice Graziano same!!! Looked dope with the colour matched door handles. Red also looked ridiculous.
Totally understand it. My father had one a few years ago but sold it. He now has a 800hp W222 S 63 AMG which is of course absolutely awesome but in terms of sound and emotions it gets nowhere near the Maserati. The sound in real life is insane. So many people shouted at us very angrily because driving this at 30 km/h in town sounds like going 100.
Was not intented as a flex :/ it's the 5.5l pre-facelifted model
