WHAT A PLEASURE it was to join Harry on this episode! So enjoyable to talk with a consummate, passionate and knowledgeable colleague around our favourite subject! Definitely a day to remember - made me feel like I was a kid in a massive toy slash candy store. Serious case of drooling and bug eyes (thanks for editing that part out Harry!). Still gushing about the day in conversations with all my friends. The 2nd half of this will go live on my RUclips channel this Thursday at 6PM U.K. time (ruclips.net/user/FrankStephensonDesign). If you’re curious to see how I experiment with a “fine-tuning” of the legendary and sacrosanct F40 design, be sure to catch it. Hoping I don’t upset the Mafia or the Pope... 😉

The Countach is a continuation of 1970s design. The F40 was a vision of the upcoming 1990s.

      @ripptorr 3 года назад +12

Even so.. the Diablo has no chance in this comparison. It's just a grown up countach. The F40 is a legend, period. From Lamborghini, I think there are 2 cars that really changed the game- The Miura - that was mindblowing when it came out ant then the Countach when it came out in the late 70's. Yeah, late 70's to see a countach was indeed something. After that all of their cars were better evolutions, but not legends. Still great cars that follow a good recipe for a supercar- Big NA engines in the back and a dramatic look. That's ok but it's no legend stuff sorry!

The Countach concept is one of the first productioncars using this sharp styling, not really a continuation but more a trendsetter. The F40 shape is still family of the 308 family styling and much more conservative. So its actually the other way around. Also F40 and Diablo cant be compared. Completely different concept. F40 was engineered and designed as a racecar suitable for roaduse. Ultimate trackday weapon. The Diablo is a luxury extreme supercar for roaduse.

You're right the Countach LP400 is a gorgeous design. Those are very rare though. The later versions may have the naughtyness due to the fleared wheel arches, air intakes and the rear spoiler but the original design by Gandini is timeless (minute 3:58 ). Also production techniques where not advanced enough for the original design leading to sharp edges at the front window line. Also the bottom rear would have looked much better if it was naked and you could see the rear tires, the rear differential and gearbox as well as suspension components.

    • @EliteRock

I once liked it (as a teenager) but now I will never allow myself to love any design which uses a steep, flat windscreen, it's bad in every way - stylistically, aerodynamically and functionally (massive un-sighting by the A-pillars). Check out Koenigsegg (or even the Miura!) to see how it should be done.

I was at the London Motor Show in 1987 - every year as my Uncle was the late David Jolliffe (ex Rob Walker Racing) he owned and ran Portman Lamborghini (Sole UK Lamborghini Concession) on George Street W1 for 31 years. See Supercar Classics ~ ‘Supercars I have Known’ article on David, September 1989 with Stirling Moss and his SLR on the cover well worth a read. I've been lucky enough to drive no end of Lamborghini and others. I worked for Davids friend David Stephens who owned Heathmans in Parsons Green (aged 18 for a few years 86/87/88/89/90) driving and selling newish/used and at the time classic Lambos and Maserati, De Tomaso Iso Griffo - all the great Italian cars and others (1950s Vette's, Modern Porsche all sorts). Countach was and is a fab distance car, crossing Europe as I did many times in one. The car other than the 288 GTO though and I mean THE CAR for me was and still is the F40. I saw that The Hairpin Company had this as I was looking only the last few days at F40's. Love the show Harry. Keep it up.

A Marcello Gandini design (in this case the Countach) will almost always win, if we are judging on looks alone. Although the the designer of the F40, Signor Leonardo Fioravanti, is also one of the all-time great designers. The F40 would be the preferred car to drive though.
The most outrageous design vs the purest drive. Two cars that reached two separate pinnacles of what a supercar should be. Both are legends

I met him once at Pebble Beach talking to him about his 2nd passion; Guitars (hand-build) from Spain and of course watches...
It was the following year we both met you, at Gooding auction of Pebble Beach, next to a countach Periscopo, sold at $1,9 milj the next day.
I enjoyed the video very much (almost as much as your report on the Testarossa to Morocco ;-)) we talked about that time and your Mille Miglia in the 550 Maranello.

Two of my absolutely favorite cars and what great insights. One of the things that must be said about the Countach is that as a 12-year old car (at the time this one was manufactured), it represents changes that were never intended for the original design. Looking at the first LP400s, the design is so clean by comparison. As the model advanced into the 1980's, it had to encompass wider rims and tires, downforce-for-show, new regulations for bumpers and bumper safety, and lights. All of these things were tacked on to increasingly make the car look more like a "bad boy" race car. While the original could easily ford a typical driveway cutout, the later editions sported tacked-on ground-scraping ground effects kits, gigantic rear wings (famously advertised as costing as much as some entry level cars), and for those who really couldn't stop themselves - FRONT wings that ensured that the car looked ridiculous on a poster or in some glam rockstar's driveway. The original intent in 1971 was based on how Italians viewed the future: clean, sharp, with that windshield and front hood almost perfectly matching in angle so that the wedge became one gigantic frontal surface, only subtly softened with a bit of curvature imbued through the handcrafted tradition of the metal-benders. The engine cover and nacelles were not a missed opportunity to showcase the engine, but were intentionally designed to imply an advanced power plant from some futuristic power source. The final Countach LP5000S Anniversary Edition, festooned with almost every surface covered like some kind of bloated tumor, was the penultimate exercise in excess.
The Countach is like a ham sandwich: after a while, customers got tired of ham on white bread and started asking for mustard, then pickles, and lettuce, and tomatoes, pepper, mayonnaise... until finally the original plain ham sandwich actually looks tasty and interesting again, as you can taste the meat and the bread for what it is. The crazy sandwich plays on as the newer Lambo models, but there's still something thrilling about the plain vanilla version.
That being said, Harry's car is quite clean and exciting, as it lacks the US-spec bumpers and the excessive tacked-on ornamentation of some later models.

Ferrari 275 P2 for me. Fast, but not so fast it's no longer public road-friendly, it still has the squared off rollbar design so it's still fairly livable with a roof if necessary, it looks purposeful but it's still a "sportscar" in terms of appearance and not just a pure 100% race prototype, and it's proportioned absolutely perfectly

After Mini ( R53 ) F. Stephenson was one of my favorite car designers. R53 was best remake of an iconic design I could imagine. Personally, I don't like huge overhangs ( allowed only on Audi... ) R53 was almost 'overhangless' car. I never saw such a small car fitted with 18'' wheels looking so good, and looking at it you'd think 19'' inches would fit good as well. It was a true design masterpiece, especially Cooper S. Proportions of that car were simply put: Perfect! They, BMW, messed with it later on and destroyed it completely.

As you know Harry, I am a regular and subscriber to your great cartube channel.
But I feel like putting something back into the online car enthusiast community, and not be typically critical!
I feel like throwing a big nugget in here to all cartubers, as I’ve not seen any of you run with it so far? Never in the History of the Automobile, in this Cov-19 Pandemic year, or never in my lifetime, I was born in 1965, has the Car become much more important to us all, other than just a means of transportation!! Many of us have been forced to live within the small boundaries of our houses and homes. Our cars are the PERFECT means with which we can all still safely go out and live somewhat during this time! With our Car’s inherent “safety cocoon”!! I am sure it has been more than just commuting, they are directly keeping us all sane, more healthy, contributing to our overall mental health and most importantly making us all feel more optimistic about our Post-Pandemic lives!!!! In my eyes, this has been the YEAR OF THE CAR!!!!
I should mention this as well. I am sure many of us here know of the inevitability of a financial recession happening world wide now. And many, many large and small companies going broke. Many larger companies crying they’ve had the worst sales this year in their short histories, ie Car Manufacturers.
BUT! I am sure I am not alone in noticing this right now! Who knows of a family member or friend, that has bought a new or even brand new car this year? For me, 2 neighbors have bought brand new cars, my niece bought a brand new SUV this year, and I have seen more trailers with old cars ontop than ever before in my street!!!! I have even added an old classic car to my Dream Garage Collection this year!! I personally think we are all buying MORE cars this year then I can remember…No matter what the media is telling us all about, with our inevitable recession, and no one having any money to spend.
In short..It really is the YEAR OF THE CAR!!!!
My 2 cents. I’ve put forward this year to our online car enthusiast community.
And thank you, if you’ve read my longish comment this far and for the couple of minutes of your time!
