An old trick I learned from an old man is to fill the fuel filter up with ATF which cleans the injector pump and injectors, he also says it primes up easier. Like the videos, keep up the good work!
I had to do the same thing with a mid 90's Cummins Ram. Ended up draining both batteries trying to start it before the shop Foreman showed me how big of a dumbass I could be. Fired right up after filling the filter housing with ATF.
A couple of things, fill the fuel filter and the pump there's a plug on top of the pump remove, there may be a filter in there, if so remove it as well then fill the pump. It can still take a while to get it started if the fuel lines from the pump to the fuel injectors are dry as well. Been there done that many times working with older Cummins engines
My dad had an old Chevy 6.2 diesel non turbo granny 4 speed with the tool box bed and a dually anyways it had a miss so my dad put a few quarts in the tank and we went to Kissimmee fl it was blowing sparks out the tail pipe. The good old days
Man, I don't know, if you've had a bad day and you watch a Hamiltonville Farm video, with Wiley and Hank, clowning around, makes the day so much better.🤙🏻
They LOOK AWESOME, but they are a real BITCH to deal with. If it's got a sleeper, u gotta climb over the transmission to get to it. The ride is rough as hell & your less likely to walk away in a serious accident. Those ole cabover drivers were the TRUCK HARD ASS' in the trucking game back on the day. MAD RESPECT FOR ALL THOSE GENTLEMAN.
When I started my truck driving career I started in a 1979 international trans star cab over and about 5 years into having this job I was hauling a 16x80 mobile home and we was going down a 2 lane state highway and got hit head on by another 18 wheeler I bearly survived it . I never drove a cab over again that was the worst time of my life lots of recovery and lots of mental recovery!!!!! .
Chevrolet Titan My Dad drove an Astro for years. It had a 318 with a 13 speed 4:11 gears and 22 inch rubber. He hauled steel. I loved to ride with him when I could get off work. Years later I started driving and he rode with me.
I owned a '76 Astro in the early '80's. It had been owned originally by the long since defunct Branch Trucking. My "Jimmy" was powered by a 290 Cummins with a Fuller 10 speed transmission, Eaton rears and Rayco suspension. I drove it for about five years hauling the piggy back trailers throughout the New England states from the terminals in Alexandria Va. I had a good times with that truck and made some $ with it. Fond memories.
I wish I had a way to send you a few pics. I just sold my dad's 1979 gmc cabover that was setting for 10 years plus . New batterys spraying lots of starter fluid and wd40 over and over it finely fired up and made about a 5mile trip to its new owners home . I didn't think I would ever see another one like it . But this one on your video looks a lot like it. My dad had a D9 cat bull Dozer he hauled on the truck to do land scapping work. It wasn't to pretty but it was always dependable .Either way just reminded me of him and his truck. God bless .
I bought a 1981 GMC Astro and drove it 450 k . I also added a Kenworth arrow-dyne roof on with a second bunk. It had a 300 Cummins and a nine speed trans. I hauled freight in a 45 foot trailer.
Ive got tons of memories going trucking with dad back in the late 80s in his 1979 astro. It was a spec'd truck. It had round tanks like this one, an was converted to hub pilot aluminum wheels with a 400 big cam and a 13 speed. I know where the truck is but there isn't much left to it, pretty much just the cab an frame rails left an the frame rails are junk. But id use the cab if i could find a parts truck.
My wife and I had a 68 crackerbox with 6 71 and a 5 and two, wish I had it now. Was the best truck I ever had ,drove it for 5 years with normal maintenance, made me more money than any other truck we had.
Oh man brings back memories from my childhood. My grandfather had a Chevrolet model, a 1979 Chevrolet Titan. He drove this truck 308 miles round trip six days a week hauling milk. Ran this truck for 18 years and racked up a little over a Million miles. My uncle said in that time it had two in frame rebuilds.
Happy Saturday morning y'all! I want to say the Chevy was the Titan if I remember correctly. The Chevy version of the General was the Bison and the Brigadier version was the Bruin, all cool trucks
I drove an 81 Astro hauling 48’ dry van for the Aldergrove Co op BC Canada eh 13 spd, 318 Screaming Jimmy. Ran awesome except with gross payloads climbing Hwy #3 Sunday Summit, lol 4th gear foot to the floor and she refused to give up did the Jimmy hop all the way up. Loved it and am hunting for one to restore back to Hwy work.
I drove my Father-in-Laws 80 GMC Astro with a 318 Screamin Detriot. 13 speed. He used to haul lumber with it and He also hauled logs. It sas a Rough ridin truck especially with that Reco Suspension under it. I would love to have that truck..Great Video...You cant beat those old Cummins.
I saved an 86 GMC Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4 4-speed. Was able to crank it up and hear it run for a few seconds. Was the first video I ever posted on my channel. My brother Chris and I are planning to work on it again here soon now that the weather is nice. Just have other stuff to get off our plates first.
I drove an Astro for a buddy while he was on vacation. We pulled a 34ft.domp trailer and hauled anything we could get in it. I was a nice truck to drive. The problem was trying to get into the sleeper. Very hard to get in the sleeper. Not sure what year it was but it looked like yours . It also had an Eaton 13 speed trans .
When you open the radiator cap and it has pressure on it, that is a good thing and don’t necessarily mean you have a bad head, the only time you have a bad head is if you have foam, or bubbles coming up in your antifreeze or coolant. That means you have a blown head gasket, and compression is getting into the coolant system, and that isn’t good. If that happens, leave the radiator cap loose so that it won’t build up pressure, because when you shut the engine off, that coolant can get into the cylinder chamber. Pressure in the cooler system is a good thing, means you don’t have any leaks, and everything is working the way it should.
The GM cabovers : GMC was an Astro 95 , Chevy was a Titan 90 . GM Conventional: Chevy was Bruin & Bison , GMC was Brigadier & General . Kroger had the daycab Astro 95's with 6V92 hauling groceries back in the day . Mack
You, Wiley and Matt must have the same DNA bro he hates seeing old things go to scrap too. Great video of getting it running and driving guys. Safe travels
I drove a 1982 Astro in 1988.It had a 335 Cummins and a 9 speed!I also drove a 1975 GMC Astro in 1991 with an 8v71 Detroit and a 13 speed!I really enjoyed driving both of these trucks! And also Chevy built an almost identical cabover to the Astro that was called the Titan 90! Happy trucking!
I can watch you guys all day.. Wiley is the man.. I know he have story for days.. this what this world is missing.. guys like y’all. Keep the videos coming
Had a 75 back in 82 with a 290 Cummins ran its butt off, till the front housing broke and the engine dropped down. Had almost 700,000 till it was majored. Had 900,000 on it when I got it. It was pretty worn!
Not a trucker, but love seeing old iron running again. Wiley just taught me a new/old trick with that ratchet strap on the oil filter! Vielen Dank for that!
My first truck was a GMC cab over drove it nation wide for over 5 years.; Worked for Allied Van Lines. Was the coldest truck ever the big window let too much cold in. And the heater never could keep up. Worked out of Montana and saw lots of cold weather and was miserable. Thanks guys nice video
Did a cold start on an 81 freightliner cabover that me and a friend bought while driving it down to texas. Now that was a fun experience, we didn't think it'd start.
Started with lawnmower engine mini bikes when I was 10, moved to motorcycles at 14, cars and trucks when I turned 17. Now 53, still doing it. Just brought a convertible Spyder back to life. Keeping this one. So much fun to drive!
Hank and Whilley show did it again that was so good made my day to see that oldie running and driving again and sounded good so it is a clutch repair and fix up the cab nice job as always thank you for sharing and your time was really great never miss a video can't wait for next one.
Love those gmc astro cabovers I grew up in my dad's single axle one he had on carnival we worked for alot of great memories and alot of miles riding shotgun in it !!!
well if you have exhaust gasses coming out of the radiator you definetly have a blown gasket , but if you check the oil and if its milky thats a true indicator for a blown gasket
That was cool! I'm not a trucker but I love old cabovers! There's an old Freightliner single axle day cab where I live that's been parked for as long as I've been here, I see it every day and cant help but day dream of driving it!
If you had to make a living driving it 50 years ago that dream would become a nightmare. I had a '73 8664 COE Freightliner I drove for 10 years. Not too many happy memories.
And another one runs and drives!! 👏👏👏👏👏 Awesome job fellas!! 😎 The twin of the Astro was called the Chevrolet Titan. They also had two conventionals during that time too: The GMC General (5 star) and the Chevrolet Bison. 👍
I ran one of those astros but I think it might have been a 78 or 79, don’t remember. Had a 12v Detroit in it. Was ugly as sin but did that thing pull. Was way way back in my early days as a trucker. Been pretty much retired for several years.
Great job getting her going Hank and Wiley and Elvis. I have got a old 1960 Bedford truck going for my uncle on his farm. It had a six cylinder petrol engine in it he got more money for it in his farm clearing sale as it was running. As normal keep up the great work can't wait to see what's next. 🇦🇺👍
Out of all the will it start videos these guys are honestly the only ones I’ve been consistent with it seems like the others don’t really idk but I enjoy watching it
I remember these old dogs! Used to see them all over the road. When I was a high schooler, my step dad gave me a job working for him. He was a bed bugger (household moving). Ogden Transfer and Storage and he worked for Cartwright Van Lines before that. He had '78 Mack Cruiseliner, 5 speed, 300 Maxadyne engine. From '79 t0 '82 I spent my summers on the road working my a$$ off and he taught me to drive it. I drove almost everywhere out west, and he did all the eastern driving. He payed me $250.00 a week and payed all my expenses. That was great money for a teen back in those days. In 1982 I joined the USMC. This sure brings back lots of wonderful memories. I always missed those days on the road....... Still do.
To check for fuel if you cant find a stick or have problems getting it into the fuel tank. I like to use the oil dipstick to help keep dirt out of the fuel. Some times it can be hard to read but it does the job.
Not often you guys don't have to lug heavy batteries around and have fully charged batteries already in place, great video and the usual excellent commentary.
I watch you guys on the big screen all the time. I have a Wally style shovel/hammer/pry bar/impact/starter switch/wrench too. 😁 I've been using them for years. I use to work for a concrete company and one of my jobs was delivering concrete septic tanks and hulling block. The truck was an 81 GMC Cabover just like that one. It had a 24 flatbed with a crane on the back. I hate cabovers they are awkward to drive and all over the road; and they hard to get in and out of when your drunk. 🤦 An old guy could get hurt just getting in one of them dang Ol' Cabovers..🤣😂🤣
Yes I have cranked on old truck thats sat for 13 years (was someone's project), a 92 Silverado I bought in Arizona, I bought it for $500, I did the lower intake gasket, rear main seal, Found out it was a 4 bolt 350 with a pretty heavy cam in it (It was hard to get it started at first with that cam), and I swapped out the stock 2 barrel TBI they had on it for some stupid reason for a EFI 4 barrel holly I bought at Summit, I had to end up doing the radiator and water pump, I installed a locker rear end, I drove that truck for 4 years, drove it back to Ohio 2100 miles away in 2019, I recently sold it for $2400, 400,000 miles on the body, but the thing was clean, no rust, paint on the frame. I bought a 99 suburban for $1700 and used the extra money to buy a new front diff and I installed another cheap locker rear diff in it I got from summit, needed rear end bearings anyway. Im 32 and im getting too old for fast stuff like my old loud 92, I wanted comfort, and able to work when I need it, And my Suburban gets better gas milage lol
I bought a new Astro in 1978 with a 290 Cummins. Then a new one in 1982. With a 300 Cummins. Hauled farm machinery for ringle express then warren transport from 1976 to 1991. Good old days. Great show.
I drove from Gulfport, MS. to Indianapolis, IN. without a clutch, got unloaded and drove back to Westmoreland, TN. where I finally got my truck repaired.
When i first started with united parcel service in 1975 i drove at first a cab over diamond reo then a gmc astro cab over pulling doubles in ohio michigan indiana also just into kentucy after 3 years i pulled tripples with mac single axels
Titan 90 chevrolet cab over, drove one from Mo to NJ in ‘81. Drove 4070 IH for 8 months in ‘81, which I really liked better than the Titan. The Titan had a 350 Cummins, the Transtar had an 8v92 detroit.
I have some fond memories of driving with my dad in a cab over Pete with a 318 cummins and a 13 speed road ranger, he had me driving at 15 years old and wanted me to quit school to drive full time with him. I thought it was really cool and now at 65 I can't imagine putting a 15 year old in that position. He grew up on a farm handling equipment at a young age and had me driving in 4th grade.
Drove one for 3 years. Hauling machinery. 400 big cam cummins. Drove a 70 astro with a 318 detroit in the mid to late 70s. Put about 400k in one of those astros
That is a sweet ride. I would love to drive it. Awesome GMC. Love the sound of it. I would love to go on will it start rescues. That would be a awesome day for me. A fantastic dream for me.. love your videos. I always get excited over them.
That's a cool looking truck. Can't believe you got it started and moving. Some work with the engine . Install a new clutch. Paint , new fuel tank and lines.
Had some seat time in a 79' Astro with a straight 7 and a Detroit, when I worked for Mayflower moving. it was just an around the town pick-up truck they had with a 45' moving van attached.
The twin to the Astro was a Bison. Grandpa hauled granite for making tombstones from Georgia to Hindman Ky back in the late 70’s through the 90’s with a GMC Astro it had a 454 gas up until the mid 80’s then it got a B model cat
First, the Astro was a cab over, the Bison was a conventional. Second, GM never put a gas engine in a class 8 (Astro/Titan) truck. I don't know what your dad was driving but it sure wasn't an Astro.
The Chevy was the Titan The Cummins always draws fuel from the driver side, if you plum it to pull from the passenger side, it may run, but it will be hard to start, and will run very poor. The fuel pump can pull easier from the drivers side. It's the distance that causes the problem And the crossover hose will allow fuel from the passenger side to the drivers side.
You know you should have Elvis with you always! Seems like the king makes your lives much easier! Lol did you get to ask your main man about the email for military rig?
An old trick I learned from an old man is to fill the fuel filter up with ATF which cleans the injector pump and injectors, he also says it primes up easier. Like the videos, keep up the good work!

I told the guy at autozone once about how Trans fluid cleans injectors and valves. Thought he was gonna have a heart attack.
My dad had an old Chevy 6.2 diesel non turbo granny 4 speed with the tool box bed and a dually anyways it had a miss so my dad put a few quarts in the tank and we went to Kissimmee fl it was blowing sparks out the tail pipe. The good old days
Gm trucks and c🎉😢ars are designed to be filled by an external filler so when you open the cap they will blow fluids out .
Man, I don't know, if you've had a bad day and you watch a Hamiltonville Farm video, with Wiley and Hank, clowning around, makes the day so much better.🤙🏻
Those old cabovers are fantastic looking trucks - I hope this one gets saved! Love your videos - I'm always amazed how clever Wiley is!
Lots of love from Kenya 🇰🇪, I really enjoy this old machine being cranked up.
I rode with my daddy from SC to Texas a many a day in a GMC Astro with a 318 Detroit with a 9 speed transmission. Miss those days.
Hauling decking out of Columbia SC
When I started my truck driving career I started in a 1979 international trans star cab over and about 5 years into having this job I was hauling a 16x80 mobile home and we was going down a 2 lane state highway and got hit head on by another 18 wheeler I bearly survived it . I wish I had a way to send you a few pics. I just sold my dad's 1979 gmc cabover that was setting for 10 years plus . Hanks laugh is one of the best parts.😂🤣😂

Thanks… but we are far from being mechanics. 🔧😂

We’re Taking Apart A 91 It’s The 80s Bodystyle With A Tbi 350 Setup. Kind Of Rare. We’re Bringing Back An Old Silverado With It
I drove an Astro for a buddy while he was on vacation. We pulled a 34ft.domp trailer and hauled anything we could get in it. I was a nice truck to drive. The man said he drove a 1982 Astro in 1988, it had a 335 Cummins and a 9 speed!
Love the show. I was a forklift mechanic for a short life 1960s. Stated with Hyster sales company in Portland Oregon right after leaving the army

I hauled grain with a 1976 Astro with a 13 speed and a 318 Detroit in 1980. I always liked the look of the Astro but not much else.
The Dynamic Duo did it again. Enjoyed this video Hank and Wiley the Engine Whisperer.
Lol.
Good old Cummins motors Way to go guys always cool to watch you fire up Those old trucks thanks for the videos I'll keep watching always a good time
Started with lawnmower engine mini bikes when I was 10, moved to motorcycles at 14, cars and trucks when I turned 17. Now 53, still doing it. Just brought a convertible Spyder back to life. Keeping this one. So much fun to drive!

Always wanted to restore one of them. Great video guys.
Hank and Whilley show did it again that was so good made my day to see that oldie running and driving again and sounded good so it is a clutch repair and fix up the cab nice job as always thank you for sharing and your time was really great never miss a video can't wait for next one.

Love the show have watched every episode from beginning to end at least 3 times
I really wish I had the money to buy it ! It would make an old man smile and bring back memories !

I love these videos keep them coming that was cool to see that truck run and drive
You two make a great team
Thank you
I love seeing these old trucks being messed with by you guys. I run a 85 Ford L9000 tri axle dump truck everyday so I appreciate what you are doing
And another one runs and drives!! 👏👏👏👏👏 Awesome job fellas!! 😎 The twin of the Astro was called the Chevrolet Titan. They also had two conventionals during that time too: The GMC General (5 star) and the Chevrolet Bison. 👍

An old guy could get hurt just getting in one of them dang Ol' Cabovers..🤣😂🤣
LOL
ol elvis watching for sparks on the batters to make sure she will fire up. you guys make for a fun day. cheers guys.
Awesome video Hank, that old Cummins sounds good!
Great show.
👍
That old truck still has plenty of life, hope someone rebuilds her and gets some use out of it.
I drove a 1982 Astro. I put 200,000 miles in it before switching to a 84 International 9670. The Astro was a good truck but dump trucks rode better.
I drove from Gulfport, MS. to Indianapolis, IN. without a clutch, got unloaded and drove back to Westmoreland, TN. where I finally got my truck repaired.
That’s cool
When i first started with united parcel service in 1975 i drove at first a cab over diamond reo then a gmc astro cab over pulling doubles in ohio michigan indiana also just into kentucy after 3 years i pulled tripples with mac single axels
My stepdad drove the exact same tractor delivering Flav o Rich ice cream back in the 80's. I went with him a few times and these tractors are beasts.
460,000 holy moly
Also love the humor and dynamic between yall. Instant sub. Hope to see more vids
This past weekend I started a 3020 and a 4020 John Deere that had been sitting for 20+ years. It only took me about 30 minutes each to get them going!
The general does it again! Got a love it.
Titan 90 chevrolet cab over, drove one from Mo to NJ in ‘81. Drove 4070 IH for 8 months in ‘81, which I really liked better than the Titan. The Titan had a 350 Cummins, the Transtar had an 8v92 detroit.
I believe the Chevy version of the Astro 95 was the Brigadier 90. You guys sure have a lot of fun. Love your laugh.
It was the titan 90 and the ASTRO was the 95 the gmc always had a bigger number for some reason
FANTASTIC, you guys truey are a great duo......Keep me laughin' all day long. Thanks.
Found an old Astro in a junkyard, had 551K miles on it. Believe it was retired due to wiring. Same rear panel issues you had
That is a sweet ride. I would love to drive it. Awesome GMC. Love the sound of it. I would love to go on will it start rescues. That would be a awesome day for me.
A fantastic dream for me.. love your videos. I always get excited over them.
I owned a 81 with a 400 Cat , 13 speed , 3.70 rears …great truck , wish I had it today
You guys are great at what you know and that’s a gift it’s amazing what you guys do on this channel keep fallowing your dreams
New fan! Love these videos, makes me remember the times hanging out with my Grandpa on his implement farm. Miss him so much. Thanks for the video.
Welcome.
That's a cool looking truck. Can't believe you got it started and moving. Some work with the engine . Install a new clutch. Paint , new fuel tank and lines.
The Chevy Titan 90. I got my license in a ASTRO 95 in Woodstock I'll. Brings back some good memories. Love those old cabovers.
Had some seat time in a 79' Astro with a straight 7 and a Detroit, when I worked for Mayflower moving. it was just an around the town pick-up truck they had with a 45' moving van attached.
I got a old foden 3330 been sat 6 years it had a old perkins engine and bit of love she fired straight up and moved like it was brand new 👌
I ran a 1977 Astro pulling a belly dump and flatbed. Great view out the windshield!!
Hank and wiley you are first start heros and funny
You 2 are some of the funnest guys on RUclips. By the way, Elvis sighting.
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing Hank and Wiley my friends, good job guys! That Wiley is an “ Engine Whisperer “! lol 😂 thanks 👌🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸
Another success! You guys do an awesome job 👍☮️
Would love to have one of these restored, One of rthe best looking cabovers in my opinion. Really big windshield with a great view
Awesome old cabover there fellas! The Chevrolet version was the Titan!
The Chevy was the Titan
The Cummins always draws fuel from the driver side, if you plum it to pull from the passenger side, it may run, but it will be hard to start, and will run very poor.
Email wiley.dec@gmail.com and he should be able to help you out
Yep that Crescent has some heft to it😉
It’s gonna be a good day, just woke up to this! Thanks fellas
Thanks for watching!
Wallie said, come on now, that's embarrassing 🤣
