Hank if you and, your lovely wife Gina get a, chance to watch the movie called Black Dog cause that's were I picked up phrase Nothing runs better like a,Caterpillar engine Hank even though you driven a,few Trucks back in the day you would still be a, Awsome Truck driver 10-4 buddy
@@jasonleeloveless2183 Yes, Jason I get that. I've run Cat 3406s in trucks, scrapers and even motor graders. And yes, I saw Black Dog in the theater in 1998, I'm familiar with the movie quote. I said, "but...nothing screams like a Detroit.." The word "but" is a claus, an inserted uncertainty. That was a joke, but I still stand by what I joked about, nothing screams like an olde Detroit, discussion closed....
Awesome truck to work on, my dad has over a million miles on his 03 Peterbilt 379, running strong. He only swapped his CAT engine to a 2013 or 14 Cummins due to CA smog laws which is a huge bummer. I miss listening to the old engine brake too.
YES big bummer about Ports in LA area. Will not let a truck on Port property unless it's brand new or has a inspection. Very hard on guys buying a used class 8 to just move cantainer from Port to Port, big demand for that as Ships will unload at one LA port, fast turn around, then they steam to sea. The cantainer just needs to be moved to Long Beach. Good jobs for guy starting out with a affordable used truck. But now he must meet these strict emission standers with his truck, just to go on Dock Port Property. Plus there a charge to truckers for Air pollution, that truckers have no control over.
Hank, I spent quite a few years at the Pete dealer in Auburn Hills Michigan, what determined a long or short nose Pete was front axle location....I remember when Cat went from the mechanical injection to electronic injection..be safe!! May the Lord Bless ya'll!!!
Those paperwasps have a very nasty sting, I use spraypaint or brake cleaner on them. Love your battery set up, good tight connections, especially on 12 Volt systems. 500 or 600 Amps will make a bolt glow very quickly. Great start. good engine.
long nose versus short nose is pretty easy to identify from the outside of the truck with petes. long nose the hood extends past the front wheel fender arch at the cab, while on the short nose the fender arch meets the end of the hood at the cab
A good wasp spray is about 1/4-1/2 cup of Dawn dish soap in a gallon of water in a pump up garden sprayer. Or mix up a small batch for use in a hose fed garden sprayer container. Add the soap to the water; not the water to the soap to keep foaming down. This mixture will knock out the wasps just as fast as the chemical spray stuff and is a lot cheaper. You can also add peppermint extract to the mixture to keep wasps from returning to the nest since they do not like the smell. And you don’t even need a Crescent Wrench or Vise Grips to do this!
Heinz Guderian's tactics against American Killer Wasps: a flamethrower! Lol! But seriously, I have a tip for you: what about applying some grease or Kroil to the terminals? That should ease contact a bit, as you need as much power as possible to get old engines turned over!
Thanks for the Awesome startup video, nothing more satisfying than an old diesel coming to life. How’s the ram been treating you? I know someone who is thinking of buying a new gen aswel.
The people that say brake clean for wasp killer are correct. It melts their wings and exoskeletons, AKA DEAD wasp!! I drove for over 20 years and have 3, 1 million mile safety awards. I put 2.5 million on a L9000 Ford day cab. It had a super 300 cummings and was a fast truck, 76 mph all day long. It's all in the pump settings, it still got got the best mpg of the whole fleet!!
The short nose, part of the engine is under the Cab(I would call them the "FOOT WARMER") My Dad used a 1967 INT Day Cab, to haul grain, a 4 hour around trip. How he keep his on the gas, I'll never know, because the heat would heat up the foot
A Million Miles??? It's just getting comfortable now! Everything knows it's place, it flows and it works good. We'd get them warm to operating temp, a little higher than idle, and sprinkle Comet like a dust cloud over the air intake, about 4 cups, then drizzle 3 quarts of Automatic transmission fluid down the intake keeping the idle up just a hare, not too much to overrun the engine. With all the smoke there wasn't a mosquito for miles😂, but the comet broke loose all the caked oil and grime on the rings while gently honing the cylinder walls, and the ATF goes through and washes it clean as well as removing carbon around the valves and injector tip. Usually wakes them up again. Then a cup of graphite powder in the manual transmissions to wake up the synchros and you've got harmony again, we called it "Fingertip Floating" the gears.
You can tell the difference between a long hood and short hood by the front fenders. If it has a filler panel between the cab and fenders like this truck has it's an extended hood. If the fender goes right into the body it's a short hood.
Seems like Hank would at least park the truck on the side with the batteries, Wiley, might help you a little bit brother! lol 😂 y’all need a jump pack, might help!

Let one of those so-called fuel-efficient rigs nowadays sit for 2 years it would never start but these old girls like that Peterbilt far up with some loving care thanks for the video
The 3406 Cats are really great engine, the only thing I don't, like is replacing the water pump, Man what a pain in the rear. Never seen pressure on a cooling system for 2 years, That's odd!!
Thats a short nose or what they called a 378 back then. Theres about 10 or 12 inches more hood extension from the windshield to the hood. Starting fluid will drop their butts
Easiest was to see if it's a long or short nose is the hood behind the front tires will be about 13 to 14 inches wide from the over fender to the cab. On a short nose fender is dam near flush with the rear of the hood and cab. It's that easy I could tell right away that this was a long nose. I drove peterbilt for 6 years. Had both. Then ended up with a 579 slant nose. Sure miss seeing that hood in front of me.
Sure ain't. I cant even see the hood sitting up. I'm no 1st year driver so I dont put any air in the seat!! U can always tell a rookie driver. They be sitting with all the air in that seat lol hitting their head on the headliner! Shoot in my 379 sitting on the floor u couldnt see me from the drivers side window! People said I looked like a little kid driving!
a truck engine has a maximum useful life of approximately 2.5 million kilometers (with ring and piston change every million depending on previous maintenance) after that it may require complete rectification to run another million more
