    A variable ND filter should help with backlight. But I do agree the lens flare can be very nice of that's the look you want.

      I prefer not to use variable ND as I don't like the polarisation effect coming with it. I prefer proper ND filters and CPL separately :)

    The MK1 85mm is a great lens, no need for an upgrade 😀

    • @holdmylenscap7241

      If you already have the Mk1 and you do mainly photography then there is not much reason to upgrade as you are right, the Mk1 is already a great lens.
      But if you shoot videos then it is a very worthy upgrade.

      Without hesitation. The Samyang has a special optical formula as it has no aspherical element which makes its bokeh gorgeous and smooth. It has a really beautiful rendering which makes it to one of the best portrait lenses.

    • @holdmylenscap7241
      @holdmylenscap7241  2 года назад +1

      It is sharp, you get really good details even at f1.4, but when you stop down just to f2.8 then you will see what the lens is really capable of. But this is expected, first of all no large aperture lens has peak performance wide open, second just like the Mk 1, this lens has no aspherical elements and I believe that's the real strength of this lens, absolutely gorgeous bokeh rendering. I checked almost all reviews of the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN especially the ones where they compare image quality with GMaster and the Mk1 and in my opinion the three lenses perform very similar (Sigma might have a extremely minor advantage in sharpness when it comes to wide open, negligible in real word use), except when it comes to rendering Samyang has the best bokeh :)
      If you ever used the Mk1 then you know what these lenses are capable when it comes to sharpness, and I never really seen people complain about the Mk1 in that regard, apart from the yellow tinting, which is gone in the Mk2

    The second version left the strengths of the first, getting rid of its shortcomings, which mainly concerned autofocus, plus, as I understand, they replaced the autofocus motor with STM, which should increase reliability. I don’t know how at 85 I, at 35mm I version often crashed when using tracking focus.

    • @holdmylenscap7241
      @holdmylenscap7241  2 года назад +1

      Sigma is a great lens, and is very sharp, but bigger and heavier than the Samyang and has a very modern rendering. The Samyang might be a little softer wide open, but it has a beautiful rendering like vintage lenses. Both lens has their own strength and weaknesses. Personally I prefer the rendering of the Samyang as the pictures made with it have life in them while the Sigma ones look almost like CGI render.

    After 7 years of doing adverts and commercial with my 35 and 50, I'm finally stepping off into portraiture world and I'm shopping for my first ever 85mm! (Yes, I have never in my life owned an 85mm lens!) I have to say, I am kind of disappointed with the lens choice I'm offered! I haven't yet found a good 85mm and this Samyang is no exception. I've been shooting with Zeiss, Leica and Hasselblad 35, 50 and 55 lenses all my career so I'm used to that smooth dimensional rendering, micro contrast and those apochromatic aspherical lens designs, which I can't seem to find anywhere. :( Even the Zeiss 85mm (Batis) doesn't have that typical dimensional rendering and micro contrast I'm used to. So far I looked (and tried) the Sonys GM, the Sonys 1.8, the Zeiss Batis, all three of Samyangs 85mm lenses, Sigmas ''new'' 1.4 and Tokinas 1.8 - all of which are disappointing. Next monday I'll be testing out the Zeiss Loxia 2,4/85 which is supposed to have the same dimensional rendering and micro contrast as the Sony-Zeiss E mount 50mm 1.4 but that still sounds below what I'm used to.
    At the moment, the two main lenses I am using for my work are the 35mm and 50mm f2 APO ASPH from Voigtlander and when I need Auto-Focus I have the Sony-Zeiss 55mm 1.8 which renders almost as good as the Voigtlander 50mm f2 APO ASPH. I wish Voigtlander made a newer version of their old 85mm APO ASPH, like they did with their 35 and 50...
    Does anyone here maybe know any good 85mm lenses on par with the aforementioned lenses? Price doesn't matter as long as it's a native E mount lens - and preferably a newer lens so I don't have to buy an adapter again.

    • @holdmylenscap7241
      @holdmylenscap7241  2 года назад +3

      It's not the year, it's physics which will be always a limit. Even the GMaster (which is double the price) and the Sigma are not razor sharp at f1.4 in the middle, and with such wide apertures it is most likely near impossible. But for the type of shots you do at f1.4 you don't need the same razor sharp image quality that you will need when stopped down. Portraits actually benefit from a bit softness (hence the portrait lenses with built in softening are still well sought after and going for crazy high money), and for landscapes you are not using f1.4. The Samyang is fairly sharp in the middle with nice amount of details wide open which can be further improved with software like Topaz Sharpen AI and you only need to stop it down to f2.8 to achieve really good sharpness from corner to corner. But in return _in my opinion_ wide open you have one of the most pleasing bokeh, which is more important in portraits than razor sharp pores on the model's face ;)

      @@holdmylenscap7241 Thanks for the very informative reaction. I appreciate it. As a vintage lens user, I do appreciate the character of the lenses, and I don’t always look for clinical sharpness , especially for portraits work. My favorite 85mm lens is the Canon FD 85mm 1.2L, which is a manual focus one, but nice and sharp enough in the middle even wide open and with beautiful bokeh as well. I do own the first version of Samyang as well, and the manual focus version too. No complains really. However, I thought an update will bring an improvement of sharpness in the middle, for those who like pixel peeping. I don’t 😀. I just don’t see much justification for an upgrade. Yes, the weight, the dimensions, the buttons, but at the end of the day, the first version seems to be just as capable, to be honest. The 135mm 1.8, well that one seems to rock and the Sony GM doesn’t seem to be better, while much more expensive. Anyway, I looked at more of your videos, I subscribed, because I truly enjoy your work. Keep it up and all the best!

    • @holdmylenscap7241
      @holdmylenscap7241  2 года назад +2

      I 100% agree with you. For photographers the MkII does not offer much apart from the newer, smaller design and the more quiet AF. If you have the MkI and you love it then carry on using it as it is a marvellous lens. With the 85mm f1.4 (both versions) Samyang aimed at portrait photographers that's why they left out the aspherical elements to create this more pleasing bokeh and I think many people love the Mk1 and will love the Mk2 for it's "classic vintage" rendering. The 135mm is a more sophisticated lens, with more sharpness and better CA (especially LoCA) performance and flare resistance, but it has a more "modern" rendering. I believe Samyang did choose very well when they kept the two lenses apart from each other in terms of rendering as 85mm and 135mm are quite similar so normally there would be no reason to get both, but due to the characteristic difference I believe it makes sense to have both.
      Thank you very much for your subscription, it's really appreciated :)
