    Most lenses work well in standard situations. Most of the time you get to the differences in extreme situations: extremely low light, extremely bright light, stray light, sunlight, fluorescent light, extreme high or low contrast, fast-moving subjects. Then you might run into trouble focusing, experience flaring, ghosting, etc. The next thing you want to know is how it contributes to your workflow. You want something that gets to the desired result in a minimum amount of time. So sometimes an extra button or switch does the trick. You also might want to use the lens that works similar to the thing you are shooting most of the time with. You want to do it always the same way and not to think about where the button on this lens is compared to your other lenses.

    Great review, thanks! Made me keep my reliable Sony 85mm f1.8 . I also tested 1.4 vs 1.8 and saw that "bokeh" looks very similar. ISO performance is not an issue with Sony, so my main focus is how round bokeh is when you stop down the lens (I hate hexagon bokeh!). And you need to stop it down if you shoot more than one person to make both persons faces in focus. Also focus reliability is top priority - no matter that your picture bokeh will be nicer, if your subject face will be completely out of focus :D
    was thinking to sell my 85/1.8 and get samyang, but after your video - I will think no more :D

  • @MarcoLorenzoFlute

    This video seals it for me. If you don't need video, there is almost no reason to get the Sony's over the Samyang (Rokinon). Samyang had faster autofocus than the GM, less rounded bokeh and slightly less sharpness at 1.4. The differences become less as you go to 1.8 and beyond. For me, that doesn't justify the massive price difference. The only thing the Sony 1.8 has on the Samyang is the autofocus, but less difference in still photos. That's a worthy sacrifice for that extra stop of light IMO.

    after 3-4 years of using Samyang 85 1.4, as long as the object doesn't move too fast, it could provide good enough image quality and focus performance. And it is comfortable for low light situation. At its price, a big bang for money comparing to GM or GM II. Of course, sometime you may wonder if the 85 1.8 could focus a little bit faster and light your camera bag too.

    I'm considering getting a FF lens for my sony a6400 (so i can have lenses for a future FF camera, and also why not). the funny thing is, when you start to have a few regular goto lenses, as i do now, and think about the future, while you are also deciding what filter set up to get (as I am now) things like the filter size matter....somewhat. At the moment my largest lens filter size is 67mm on my Rokinon 12mm wide. that Rokinon 85 has a 72mm filter thread whereas that sony 85 has 67mm filter thread. I Can Not decide if I should go ahead and "Filter up" to a master 72mm (or even 77) filter set up with various step up rings, or use 67mm filter set up as my main set up for now. I'm going to order filters today or tomorrow, and I'm not getting cheap ones so it's one of those photography gear puzzles. I have the Sigma 30mm and most likely will get the 56mm (maybe), as a side note and I love Sigma's lenses so far. How bout that Sirui 50mm 1.8 1.33x Anamorphic lens as another side not though!! (also 67mm thread..HA!)

    With the Sony f1.8 being both sharp and affordable, Samyang tried to fill a space that wasn't really there. The thing about Samyang lenses (and any other non-Sony E-lens) is that camera firmware updates can really mess things up. I really like my Samyang 50/1.4, but it's totally unreliable since the A9 v5 update. I wrote the company, and they're working on a fix, meanwhile the lens is just sitting on my desk...

    Hey man! How are you? One thing I want to know about the Samyang: How's the manual focus ring? Is it long to pull focus? Because I have a Sigma 30mm which is basically impossible to use manual focus, because it is tooooooo long! Thank you

    • @SirRelith
      @SirRelith 5 лет назад

      I've heard that it is one of the better focus by wire rings. Very smooth and damped well. Heard no bad things about it, but that's just my experience. I'm thinking of buying it, but have yet to pull the trigger.

    What are your thoughts on the Rokinon 35 1.4? Have you got your hands on it yet? I'm not really sold on the 28 f2.0 and am pretty close to shopping for a 35, let me know your thoughts Jason!

    I'm so confused between Samyang 85 1.4 and Sony 85 1.8. for a7iii
    Is the difference between the two massive?
    I prefer going with native sony glass but then f1.4... at this price is just unbeatable...
    Can you suggest the best option? Please

    Both f1.4 lenses are at their sharpest at f/4. And at that particular f-stop, there is noticeably less sharpness with the Samyang in the corners, and a tiny bit less sharpness in the middle.
    Surprisingly however, with the Sony f/1.8, it is a little bit sharper in the middle and slightly sharper in the corners, than the Sony f/1.4 at f/4. It is however, marginally less light-sensitive overall, with a slightly lower t-stop rating (ref: dxomark), of around 1/5 of an f-stop. T=1.8 vs T=1.5 - This means that for any given combination of shutter speed and aperture, the superior f/1.4 will give you a lower ISO. eg 100 vs 120.
    This small difference is barely noticeable though, and given that the Sony f/1.8 is a slightly sharper lens, then unless you are a bokeh obsessive, the Sony f/1.8 is probably not only a more practical lens than the Sony f/1.4, but it's also US$1,100 cheaper.
    I'm keeping my Sony f/1.4 however, because it has an external aperture ring which I really like to use, and it's the only lens that gets truly circular bokeh balls at f/1.4 - This is something of course, that most lay people would say: "so what".

    Jason do u ever consider resale value when recommending?
    GM or an art will fetch more once it’s time to part ways than a rokinon.

    • @JamesClark1991
      @JamesClark1991 5 лет назад

      I disagree. The market will decide, not the brand name.

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  5 лет назад

      Good idea! I definitely do consider the value if I were to resell the lens in the future. Sony resale values were super low in the beginning but they are climbing their way up now that there are more alpha cameras in peoples hands. You used to be able to net a GM for 1200!

    • @LukeKwan78

      Jason Vong I scored my 85 gm net for $900! The seller sold the camera and a a7ii. Sold the camera kept the lens.

    Hey! Do those lenses have Focus By Wire? I bought the Tamron 28-75mm few months ago and i'm really struggling with FBW when i shoot on manual focus. Now i'm looking for a prime lens without Focus By Wire or at least with an indicator on it.

    • @bballer151331
      @bballer151331 5 лет назад +1

      TaSoS all Sony lenses are focus by wire, unless you get a designated manual focus lens like a vintage lens, meike lens, Samyang’s manual focus lenses, etc

    • @sirggkas
      @sirggkas 5 лет назад

      @@bballer151331 Hey thanks for response! I tried recently the Sigma 50mm 1.4 art and it didnt seem to have focus by wire. It is also really helpful that its focus ring has a start and finish point. Do you know if Zeiss Batis 85mm has FBW? Thank you!

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  5 лет назад +1

      @@sirggkas Yes Zeiss too. Sigma Art is different because the lenses were designed for DSLR and got readapted for mirrorless, hence the focusing is much better manually

    It was between the rokinon and the 85mm1.8. Went for a used 85mm 1.8 for 400 bucks because I really didn't need that 1.4. I prefer the faster af, the much much lighter body cuz I'm carrying it around all day, af mf button and the useful focus hold button. I hate heavy lenses on the Sony body without the battery grip which adds even more weight to balance it out

    Hi Jason, great video and collaboration with Kitty, that I am following as well 😊. I am just wondering how those "budget" lenses work with a a7riii. Nothing against the a7iii, but the pixels are smaller on the R, does it mater? I am starting my Batis collection as well but I would be happy to save some money sometimes 🤭 thanks a lot and keep the good content.
