It starts with quite mocking and transitions into giddy anticipation for the kill into condescending sadistic sympathy to psychopathic rage then brutal honesty and finally full circle to sadistic mockery. The manic energy is palpable. Heath's delivery is chilling and the found footage format just adds that extra edge that make this scene truly terrifying.

Brian was a very brave man. You could tell the Joker scared the piss out of him yet in his own small way he stood up to him. He didnt beg or negotiate. His last words were of support for his idol and defiance for Joker and other evil men. Who is braver? An armed warrior facing a dragon? Or a small weak man who defies the dragon even as the dragon is about to turn him inside out?
Both are brave, but the warrior is smarter because he prepared himself, under the armor the flesh is the same. The other way around it could be said that Brian wasn't brave but crazy.

Hearing that "look at me" really, in my opinion at least, signifies and shows us all the true monster that lives within the Joker. Hearing him sound like that compared to when he's always just being his psychotic, peppy, upbeat, maniacal self, really just makes you realise that yes even tho he is a human being, it just seems so hard to believe. This rendition that was so perfectly done by Mr Heath Ledger himself, this rendition of Joker is literally a walking hellspawn in human form.
I can vouch for that because when I saw this movie in the theater. After he said that line it was quiet to the point where you could hear a pin drop. This whole scene the theater where I saw it was really quiet Heath Ledger was terrifying as Joker.

Help Me Get 1000 Subscribers Man...they cant be compared. Joaquin Joker perfomance is great, phenomenal! But Heath Ledger takes a better aproach to the comics book..just like Tom Holland did to SpiderMan.
Both versions are amazing imo. Ledgers Joker was great for the action thriller The Dark Knight was. And Joaquins Joker was great for the psychological thriller Joker was.
I saw an analysis somewhere i don't remember, but this is considered as one of the best Jumpscare of all time, because of its unpredictability & the setting of the scene before.
It's such a small detail, but I love how the Joker's clown act slips for a moment whenever he gets pissed off and we get split second glimpses of the pure psychopath underneath. 1:32, 1:42, 1:54.
He doesn't have a clown act thought it's just to symbolize that everything is just one big joke. He ends it off with his patented HAAHAHAHAHA to show you that

Man, this scene was fascinating seeing Heath's acting range, yet terrifying, because you honestly felt bad for Brian because the Joker was like a bear playing with it's prey. Truly and unforgettable performance by everyone.
Apparently Nolan was so impressed with these “hostage” video auditions on the first take that he let Heath do them without his supervision because he trusted his skills. Incredible chemistry from cast and crew makes legendary outcomes 👌🏻

All these years later, and having watched it well over 200 times, when Joker says, "LOOK AT ME!" a chill still runs down my back. I wish there had been a way to save Heath. I think he had the potential to be the millennium's finest actor.
The way Ledger's voice and how it dropped then went up a notch then back down, then LOOK AT ME, a pure and utter psychopath in every sense of the word. Anyone who was not scared is lying. This is a guy who locked himself in a room for a MONTH scribbling down his character's thoughts in a journal. Method acting can be bad if the actor isn't skilled enough but Heath knew what he was doing. All the actors have said that he was legit terrifying when the scene called for him to be.
So often in cinema we see "found footage" shot through a phone or by an amateur holding a camera, and it is always perfectly lit and the characters are always perfectly in fram, and the audio doesn't include any sounds of breathing or lip smacking. Not this, though. I think they threw heath an IPhone and told him to go at it.
Except the audio is too clean, more like you're watching the video with headphones on, not watching it through a TV in a large room. But anyway, sacrifices are made so you get the dramatic impact ;)
Heath thought the footage was useless because it was somewhat blurry (and he did record it himself) but Nolan thought it had something special so they used it. I can’t recall if Nolan said they tried reshooting it or not but I think they did try.
Dark Knight is from 2008. I doubt Joker had an iPhone at that time, it was still a geek item. And the rubber sounds you hear are from switching the grip on the camera.

I just realized, on like my 90th viewing, that in this scene Joker kills Brian in a Slaughter house and later on he chases the police in a truck labeled Slaughter is the best medicine, maybe a little bit of foreshadowing.
I know Heath takes all credit for this, but the guy playing the hostage killed it too. The look on his face is amazingly convicing, the dread when he can barely look at him straight, kinda does it sideways. This is probably my favourite scene.

I mean, due to the capabalities of animated DC movies, he is the most faithfull one to the comics. I forget how much I love the Dark Knight Trilogy. I need to rewatch it as an adult to appreciate it more. The "LOOK AT ME" scene gives me chills. It reminds me how much Heath Ledger deserved his posthumous Oscar.
I believe that Batman himself had no fear and decided he will face down and defeat this new monster in Gotham...once the interrogation happened though he had no idea what to do... Bruce was never trained nor prepared for this new face of evil. I doubt the League of shadows could understand the new evil...the chaos that is to come.
Bane would have no fear of this menance...he would consider taking this Devil into his service only to realize too late that The joker can't be tamed...a 2 way war between the 2 Would happen... Batman would return soon after and take the fight to both of them

I don't think you can even compare them because Joaquin's character wasn't the Joker until the last 20 minutes of the movie, before that he was Arthur slowly turning into the Joker over the course of the movie. It's two different characters even though both are technically the Joker.
This is such a great performance, that it literally gives me goosebumps when he yells “LOOK AT ME”. You can tell he put ALL of his heart & soul into this roll.
I just saw this again for the first time in many years…and I’m still completely mind blown by Heath Ledger’s performance. He took methodical acting to a whole new level with his portrayal of The Joker. I remembered his scary “LOOK AT ME,” I knew it was coming, and I still get the same chills I did when I first saw this in the theaters. I wish Heath were still here to see how much admiration many have for his amazing, definitive portrayal of an iconic villain.
You can hear so many layers of the Joker's voice you have to wonder what his real voice sounds like. Heath Ledger did intend to make it sound like ventriloquism.

I think the Joker persona is a facade he uses to cope with his mental trauma and what his life has become, and in moments such as this where his patience is pushed he drops it and lets his true self out. It always chilled me how immediately after it sounds like he's struggling to regain his composure, his voice trembles and he's breathing heavy when he says "this is how crazy Batman's made Gotham." I remember when the first teaser dropped, and this was the scene they used. Even without context, the Joker was immediately terrifying.
Got to admit watching this scene for the very first time surprised me, no one can ever expect a slight jump scare during a scene that doesn't look like anything is going to happen. Notice how that was bro saying "we're trying to help you" earlier on in this movie (the parking lot Scarecrow scene) still almost wearing the same Batsuit as Batman.
A lot of actors go along their careers playing themselves in movies. This guy Heath Ledger was no where to be found in this one. The way he changed his voice like that was another level.

An old lady died next to me in the theatre from this scene. My friends and I all ditched class to see this when it came out and the theatre's bass was to the MAX that day. When the fake batman hit the window it was like a bomb went off. An old lady sitting next to me let out a homer Simpson scream and threw her popcorn in the air, then fell over to the side. 17yr old me thought she was faking it and started laughing with my friends until some guy came over to check on her and we realized she wasn't moving.

Hearing that "look at me" really, in my opinion at least, signifies and shows us all the true monster that lives within the Joker. Hearing him sound like that compared to when he's always just being his psychotic, peppy, upbeat, maniacal self, really just makes you realise that yes even tho he is a human being, it just seems so hard to believe. This rendition that was so perfectly done by Mr Heath Ledger himself, this rendition of Joker is literally a walking hellspawn in human form.

This is a guy who locked himself in a room for a MONTH scribbling down his character's thoughts in a journal. Method acting can be bad if the actor isn't skilled enough but Heath knew what he was doing. All the actors have said that he was legit terrifying when the scene called for him to be.

So often in cinema we see "found footage" shot through a phone or by an amateur holding a camera, and it is always perfectly lit and the characters are always perfectly in fram, and the audio doesn't include any sounds of breathing or lip smacking.
Not this, though. I think they threw heath an IPhone and told him to go at it.
Except the audio is too clean, more like you're watching the video with headphones on, not watching it through a TV in a large room. But anyway, sacrifices are made so you get the dramatic impact ;)

Heath thought the footage was useless because it was somewhat blurry (and he did record it himself) but Nolan thought it had something special so they used it. I can’t recall if Nolan said they tried reshooting it or not but I think they did try.
Dark Knight is from 2008. I doubt Joker had an iPhone at that time, it was still a geek item.

This is such a great performance, that it literally gives me goosebumps when he yells “LOOK AT ME”. You can tell he put ALL of his heart & soul into this roll.
I just saw this again for the first time in many years…and I’m still completely mind blown by Heath Ledger’s performance. He took methodical acting to a whole new level with his portrayal of The Joker. I remembered his scary “LOOK AT ME,” I knew it was coming, and I still get the same chills I did when I first saw this in the theaters. I wish Heath were still here to see how much admiration many have for his amazing, definitive portrayal of an iconic villain.
You can hear so many layers of the Joker's voice you have to wonder what his real voice sounds like. Heath Ledger did intend to make it sound like ventriloquism.

I think the Joker persona is a facade he uses to cope with his mental trauma and what his life has become, and in moments such as this where his patience is pushed he drops it and lets his true self out. It always chilled me how immediately after it sounds like he's struggling to regain his composure, his voice trembles and he's breathing heavy when he says "this is how crazy Batman's made Gotham." I remember when the first teaser dropped, and this was the scene they used. Even without context, the Joker was immediately terrifying.

Got to admit watching this scene for the very first time surprised me, no one can ever expect a slight jump scare during a scene that doesn't look like anything is going to happen. A lot of actors go along their careers playing themselves in movies. This guy Heath Ledger was no where to be found in this one. The way he changed his voice like that was another level.
That is such a strong realization, he lost himself and legit became the joker.. most of this movie is looking into his eyes and I see his face but I don’t see Heath inside of there..
An old lady died next to me in the theatre from this scene. My friends and I all ditched class to see this when it came out and the theatre's bass was to the MAX that day. When the fake batman hit the window it was like a bomb went off. An old lady sitting next to me let out a homer Simpson scream and threw her popcorn in the air, then fell over to the side. 17yr old me thought she was faking it and started laughing with my friends until some guy came over to check on her and we realized she wasn't moving.
