Being the 3rd smartest human being alive, it's not difficult for someone of his level of intellect to calculate the acceleration, speed and angle he needed his vehicle to be in, to minimise his injuries post-collision. Not to mention, sports cars are literally designed with the best safety-features for collisions because people only buy those kind of cars to show off the speed.

Watching this movie again after 10 years, I am starting to find a lot of subtleties that I can relate to based on my own life experiences. Like how proactive Gordon is when he decides to wheel out all patients. He knows right away the Joker succeeded in planting the bombs.

The amount of subtle things in this scene show how good Nolan is at writing:
Joker calls in to predict someone's death, a nod to the Joker's modus operandi in his first appearance in Dc comics
Bruce immediately thinks of finding out which of Gordon's men would have a motivation to kill Reese, something only the world's greatest detective would think of, not to mention his ability to identify officers from far away while he's driving past them.
Reese figures out Bruce is batman and blackmails Fox (a nod to the riddler)
Mr Reese sounds like mysteries, similar to how E. Nygma sounds like enigma
Gordon says maybe batman can save Reese, foreshadowing what actually happens
Bruce gives Reese a subtle nod to let Reese know that batman did in fact save him and only he knows it
The playboy car Bruce drives is a Lamborghini Murcielago, Lamborghini's fastest car at the time so a natural choice for a billionaire playboy. Murcielago is Spanish for bat.
After being in a car crash Bruce thinks he should go to the hospital and Gordon says he doesn't watch the news much because the hospital is being evacuated.
Edit: I just rewatched the video and realised there were 2 officers who had relatives in the hospital texted to Gordon. Berg was obviously in the van with them, the other was Ramires, the corrupt police woman that kidnapped Rachel and Harvey later finds out this is because she had relatives in the hospital. I don't know how I noticed that detail, nevermind how Nolan thought to put that in

I just got to say I love how this seem foreshadows the fact that Bruce/Batman is willing to sacrifice his public image to do what he believes the right thing. He wouldn’t hesitate to make himself look like a reckless, idiotic driver and potentially mess with his public image if it means saving a man’s life. A man who is actively trying to get him arrested mind you.

  • @iRazenrak
    @iRazenrak 3 года назад +42

Bruce making eye contact with Coleman was more than just, "I saved your life." You gotta look at it from Coleman's point of view:
    1. Bruce knows he knows. Alright, so Coleman told Fox and Fox told Bruce. Not a stretch by any means.
    2. Bruce knew exactly which police van he was in. When a portion of the city is trying to kill you, the fact one man can just find you whenever he wants is horrifying. Coleman knows only people with relatives in hospitals are after him, and he doesn't know, nor will he ever know, if Bruce had a relative, and if he spared his life because he didn't want Joker to win, because he planned on defeating Joker as Batman, or if he was just letting him live for now, and killing him later. Coleman doesn't know Batman's full ideology.
    3. Bruce is just talking to Gordon like normal. Coleman may not know if Gordon knows who Batman is, but whether he does or doesn't, it's still scary, because he tried blackmailing someone who may or may not be close partners with the police commissioner. Either option is scary. Revealing Batman's secret and having Bruce sent to Arkham would be like killing a cop; you will always have a target on your back for ruining the life of one of Gotham's greatest heroes.
    4. Just how much control Bruce has over the situation. Coleman must have felt like a nobody at Wayne Enterprises, and for its top CEO/Batman to single you out and look you in the eyes as if to say, "You wanted my attention, you've got it, now what?" is fucking scary. Not to mention the strings being pulled around them. How many cops know Bruce is Batman? Coleman doesn't know. For all he does know, he's in the middle of a stage where he's the only one who doesn't know what's going on. He just stumbled onto it where all the key players like Batman, Joker, and Gordon are moving around in a delicate balance where Gotham's soul is at stake. What's EVEN scarier is the reality; no one knows Bruce is Batman. This little charade could definitely go south at any point. Bruce doesn't control the police or the citizens, he can't stop Coleman from being killed. And that lack of control is even scarier than the possibility that Bruce is in control of everything and he's just pushing Coleman around like a puppet.

Gotham general is a much simpler name than listing Columbia Irving medical centre and Weill Cornell medical centre, and probably Langone Tisch, Montefiore, Long Island Jewish medical centre, and Mount Sinai before you even get out of the 1000+ bed New York hospitals. I presume this indicates, that, contrary to how else they portray it, Gotham's not actually very big (though that's kind of indicated in that Batman can have a cave in the palisades, which, even given an estate in the relatively close area of the hamptons, would be 2 hours out of the city on a good day).
