Led Zeppelin Live Aid 1985 3 Stairway to Heaven Stereo (Read Description First)

- Led Zeppelin's infamous return to the stage in Philadelphia's JFK Stadium in July 1985 to support Bob Geldof's international "Live Aid" event to bring relief to the Ethiopian famine. Introduced by Phil Collins, the band takes to the stage with Tony Thompson on drums & Collins tagging along.
Part 3: The Led Zeppelin reunion takes flight on the Stairway, & carries with them 90,000+ along for the ride. Does anybody remember laughter?
This clip has been cleaned up: the green hues from the 20 yr old + tape has been removed, the brightness & contrast have been balanced out.
The audio has been synchronized to the FM broadcast captured on an old cassette tape. That audio was pretty messed up & had lots of dropouts, hopefully the results are satisfactory.
Enjoy!!!

Damnn i wish i was there, if only i was born in that time tho😔. At least i can still seeing them in here
It makes me wonder....

Robert's giant smile after saying "Does anybody remember laughter?" makes up for any mistakes made.
Led Zeppelin for ever... In this century And for another...!!!
I think the reason he smiled was because he said that on the 1973 live version of Stairway to Heaven on the Song Remains the Same live album

These guys literally came from different places on earth to be together to play this one off gig, with only about one hour of practice time before hitting the stage. With that in mind, I think they sounded great. I remember watching this event on live tv with friends as it was happening, and we were all overjoyed and stoked that the remaining members of Zeppelin were actually performing again. Listen to the joy and cheering from the crowd at the end....they all thought it was great. The VJ's from MTV were beside themselves from happiness. This was an historical moment in rock history, and for those who criticize this performance can go screw themselves, because EVERYONE back then enjoyed the experience and thought it was awesome.

No band writes songs Like Zeppelin, they were magic, so blessed to have watched them perform from 70s-80s and beyond, just to see them in Philly again was magical
the problelm is , they never come back. Those who know them suffer from this.
How can anyone not be moved by this masterpiece? There are no words to describe the sheer poetry of this track. If you close your eyes when listening to this you will be transported into another time and place!!

the world's knew you're legend when a lot of human beings pay to watch a stoned man playing guitar.
You do know Led Zeppelin wasn't the only band playing at this concert ?
@@roberts.6575 yes i do ..
Well, it's not like they knew the performance was gonna suck.
"stoned" is an understatement
Led Zeppelin started the show with equipment and sound problems. They were having trouble getting thru " Rock n Roll " and " Whole Lotta Love " and then they did an amazing version of " Stairway to Heaven " IORR.
High or not.
Jimmy Still and always a legend.
I think.. that's the best song from LED ZEPPELIN..Now and Forever..
That's why Zeppelin is my favourite band, their essence of Rock music is pure. It's about raw energy and feeling good. Even the highly precise & technical Eddie Van Halen said it "Don't stop and don't let the audience know you made a mistake. Or, smile and do it twice, then people will think you meant it! "
Jimmy so high he don't need a stairway to get to heaven
He will never get to heaven he worships Satan
Your high
God and Satan both took credit. There's God, there's Satan, and then there's. LED ZEPPELIN
Most rock songs would have never been written without the help of diacetylmorphine, better know as Heroin the Hero!
he may be high but he can kick your ass on a guitar anyway He is a God
For all those complaining about this performance remember you are still watching and talking about it 31 years later .... Not many bands can fuck up that magnificently!

+Tim Bennett ... they talked about tiny tim for a long time ... and they still talk about hitler. this is one crap performance no matter how 'famous' they were.
+Tim Bennett true i cannot stop listening/playing this song it's a amazing song
+The Nexus if I remember correctly, it was the band itself that asked the people who made the DVD to cut out the performance
Tim Bennett and
I was there about 10 ft off stage left. I don't care what Jimmy or Robert feel about this day, it was awesome to be there.
Two guitars in one hand that's rock n freakin roll. Legends
when a band's "bad performance" gets revisited by thousands of people in a day, the band is truly one of the best band!
It's only considered "bad" because they are so well respected by fans that even a great performance like this is considered underperforming. I'm sure the people there live didn't give a shit. They loved it.
They are too messed up to play the drummer not playing and they are clearly not into it. They are my favorite rock band of all time and that won’t change . I had my own blues band in the 90s and if I was too messed up they wouldn’t let me play and there were many times I was. They are GOAT!
I don't think it was so bad but I know what you mean
@@maxxxmodelz4061 The fact that people didn't care doesn't make it a great performance. There were some major communication issues to say the least...

No, the drums were just not good. 🤦🏽♂️
Phil is a phenomenal drummer, but, he was WAY out over his skis here.
If only Jason could’ve played! He would’ve been about 19 in ‘85.. 🤷🏽
Would’ve been so much better.
Phil and Tommy just didn’t pull this off.
I know it's bad this or bad that. But 35 years later , how fuqn cool is it to see this again . I remember laughter ✌️
I feel very happy because in 2021 Jimmy turned 77 years old, a handsome and healthy man with gray hair. He survived drugs and alcohol, thank God! And STH remains a masterpiece, the most beautiful and iconic song ever recorded, by the best and most iconic band in the world and Jimmy will always be the greatest and most iconic guitarist of all time! 🎶🎸🎼❤️

I can't unsee 80s Led Zeppelin now that I've seen it
Ian Conery- Watch Rotterdam 1980, that show was brilliant. It shows what an 80s Zeppelin could do when they rehearsed.
It’s the death of bonzo. Jimmy felt responsible for the death because it was at his mansion. Robert and Jonsie both felt partially responsible.
Knebworth '79 sounded great, especially Kashmir. The DVD tells it all.
I know it's not their best performance but it still gives me goosebumps and misty eyes. ROCK LEGENDS!!

Amen
100% agree! That’s my uncle Paul Martinez playing bass.
Jimmy was off his head and as a result his playing was rubbish what a shame.
No. This is absolute crap. No excuses. It's an insult to everyone that has to endure it.
Unrehearsed is what lazy people say when they can't play properly, and Led Zeppelin did not play properly at all.
I think the luckiest people are those who watched Led Zeppelin perform live
Certamente 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Say what you will about this performance, but bands like Led Zeppelin are few and far between. The look that Robert gives Jimmy at 1:19, to me, is filled with memories of a time past, when they were at the height of their career, standing in those very places steamrolling the rock and roll industry, creating a type of magic that those around to witness were truly lucky to experience. Long live Led Zeppelin!
It's not a look of reminiscing. He knows JP is fucked out of his head

8:29 "That'll be enough of that."
What so many forget in retrospect is that they agreed last minute to play a few songs that they hadn't played in years to raise some money for a good cause. It was meant to be watched and heard once -on that day. It was a disappointing performance but it was never meant to be be picked apart for years to come on RUclips. The crowd loved it and money was raised. By the way, I'm old enough to have watched it. The excitement level was off the charts. If you were in that crowd, you wouldn't have gave a shit about the sloppiness. You would have had a f 'ing blast.
Red you are correct - you want Zep, go watch Song Remains The Same or any clip you can find from the 70's.... but for 20 minutes, in July 1985, for those of us watching, this was everything, sloppy and all.....
I remember staying up into the small hours to see this. Not seen it in 35 years...
Exactly- this was not Led Zeppelin, it was for a good cause- Phil Collins' drumming was too fast, & just plain lackluster- & he had the nerve to say he was embarrassed - I admit the song Rock&Roll ( not included here)was very rough, but Phil must've forgotten about his video for "You Can't Hurry Love" now THAT'S embarrassing- lol

Even Led Zeppelin on their worst day, right here, are still 5000 times better than most the modern acts on their best day
Eric Blade Thing is they were more often on bad days than good days. They were great composers and creators but Jimmy was horrible live.
timeforachange12 could get sloppy, especially in the later shows but anybody who can watch Dazed and Confused in the Song Remains movie and say he was horrible? And what about the show they did recently for the Celebration Day film. I've been playing for 38 years and he's one of my main influences. I will say the solo in this vid is pretty week. He probably hadn't been practicing much
He was a bad performer, sorry to say, but a great creator in the studio, when he was not copying old afro-american bluesmen.
yea well I disagree that he was always just a bad performer period. and I'm a guy that has stood up there and done it. he had a good stage presence and usually hit the notes. his writing was brilliant. A lot of brits from his era started out with blues. y'know that was how the whole British invasion began?
He did stole a lot from old american bluesman, do some research. I was outraged when I found out myself. Don't get me wrong man, I'm a huge fan as well.

@@wrencormier513 when they first started playing I thought it was Mick Jagger till they got up closer.
OMG People!! It's not about how he LOOKS or getting HIGH Its about his MUSIC!!! Thanks JP
Each of these men paid their dues. They solidified rock music and took songs to such high levels it became difficult for most any band to reach the heights the Zepp members took it to. While most bands play hard to reach top notch standards but fail, Led Zepplin kept going with better and better. Once bands reach that high plateau, they are unable to do so after. Zepp kept it going. They will always remain the soul of Rock and Roll from each and every song they presented. We get older, things don't quite work as they used to. They came together, on stage after many years and played. Getting to stand and watch them perform would have been an honor. Stairway will always rate number one.
You never saw Keith Richards play that badly no matter what he had consumed...now that's legendary and JP is a joke.
Was watching all day with pals - drinking beer. - then this - don't care about the ins an outs of the performance - we sat mesmerised - something we never expected to ever see or hears live again...we rocked and rocked and rocked!

+Kev G. God they played it for years!! How much rehearsal did they need? To be honest its like a bunch of armatures anyway.
+MrMetalchamp I'm not sure what armatures have to do with this? In comparison to you they are amateurs. Is that what you are saying? I'm sure as soon as you learn to play an instrument you will show everyone how amateurish Led Zeppelin was.
Should be better. But compared to their peers, Cream, they were armatures.

Live aid would have to be one of the best concerts in history. Imagine those lucky enough to be there!
No, it’s not “would have” it WAS. Live Aid was the best concert in history. Period. Back then you had to pay to have access to most music video stations as most humans had just the most basic of cable but on that day everything was free. The world opened up and channel corporations allowed the average person like me to watch this extraordinary event. Until the Gulf War a few years later I had never seen paid channels open themselves to everyone. All performers kept to their time frame, no one tried to go over and no egos got in the way - it was the most amazing concert ever! And Phil Collins tool the concord so that he could play at both the British and US concerts - he just wanted to play the drums and help out. There is a book that came out shortly after the concert, but I’m sure it’s long out of print by now, but it or the DVD are well worth the hunt. This was the concert of the century and beyond, it changed music, and it was one of the most amazing experiences watching on my living room floor settled into the shag carpet!
@@laurabaird7267 Yeah that would have been unbelievable. Even watching it on RUclips and seeing the crowd it looks amazing!

1:21 Jimmy's Dazed And Confused.
no he wasn't
bro you got me crying with this comment
Lololol
Po raz pierwszy usłyszałem ich na początku lat 70 dla mnie są i byli i będą klasykami i geniuszami rocka
I grew up on this stuff. Got a tear in my eye...thanks Jimmy.
I remember listening to this when I was 16 and watching it on TV, I'm 53 now was an amazing day.
I’m just a year behind you, brother! \v/
Same of you but ... i'm 59
me too, but 52
Me too and im 55 now here in Philippines and what im listening now a day are Goregrind Metal,Cybergrind Metal and Noisecore Metal haha yeah!
#PhilippinesKingOfMetal
Me too! I’m 51
I was there! Anyone else seeing them that was in attendance that day knows all these guys were performing in record heat in Philly ... it was a once in a life time experience to be in attendance, they could have sung and played backwards and it would have been more then alright just to see them perform again! They got the loudest roar from the audience of anyone who walked on to that stage!!!
That's a good comment to make. I know I am not at all my best self in the worst heat. I thought they seemed maybe a bit out of sorts, but I really liked the performances. I wish I could have been there, but I was only 9 at the time.
Oh, and that's so awesome you were there. Good for you pausing whatever you had going on for such an epic milestone in music history. It says something when some of the richest and most famous people out there all ate humble enough to perform for nothing and help others. I am impressed.
And I’m still stunned that people pick on this performance. You said it so well☮️
Legends ... compare it with what today hits the charts ...
Led Zeppelin навсегда!!!
You can't imaging the feeling standing up there, in front of thousands singing a song that you wrote , that is appreciated and loved by everyone there . Thankyou Robert 👍💜🇬🇧
That live version really sounds like the 1972 live recording.
It amazes me that Page was able to string 2 notes together considering the state he's in!
We clearly didn’t listen the the same performance
Smack
@@lewishore8642 cmon I love page but that solo was sloppy
A guiter god plays with his heart, doesn't matter his physical condition
He's still lucky to this day he didn't fall down
Every great artist has a bad day, it doesn’t diminish their brilliance but only serves to highlight how great they were at their peak.
REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD MUSIC,,,,REALLY REALLY GOOD MEMORIES
Jimmy is so high that the Hubble telescope cannot detect him.
Dang. That's funny.
Still played guitar better than all of us
I think it is the only way to play in front of so many people
It was Phills drumming that messed him up.
@@johnw2259 Yeah, but did Jimmy play as well as he could've played? I thought Jimmy was going to heave a few times. These guys getting ripped during concerts was always something to talk about, but looking back. I think we sometimes got ripped off, by less than optimal performance. Unless of course, we were higher than they were!
That double neck SG is absolutely priceless. A musical instrument immeasurable in worth. 🎸
Page does not need the tele neck, he nails the c in the triplet. Yeah 1st time it is awkward but you get used to it.
@@stephenvignovich8654 Page played a Fender Telecaster on the damned recording.
@@pauljordan4452 We were talking about the EDS1275. the Tele on the studio track is old news, why not tele me he used a 58 V on you shook me, old news there.
I'm truly thankful for, at the young age of 15, seeing "Stairway to Heaven" performed live at my very first concert "An Evening with Led Zeppelin" on 4/20/1977 at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati Ohio. Sadly, this concert turned out to be the very last time the mighty Led Zeppelin would ever grace my city (RIP Bonzo). It still remains THE BEST concert I have ever seen to date. Indeed, I'll never forget feeling the concrete floor of the coliseum literally bOuNcInG uP aNd DoWn from everyone stomping their feet as "Trampled Under Foot" ended their 3+ hour long show that magical night. Little did I know their last song ever performed live in Cincy would be ironically prophetic for me only a few years later and yards away, specifically at 7:26pm on 12/3/1979 as I stood half frozen outside on the coliseum's pavilion, waiting to get inside for a concert that started at 8:05pm, when suddenly, I was caught up in a stampede that came from behind me and carried me forward about 10-15 feet before I even realized what was happening, and by then I was being pushed/falling down, with my legs/arms unmovable due to the tightly packed crowd around me. That natural reaction everyone has when falling down to put their hands out in front to keep their head/face from hitting the ground was impossible. In the next moment, I just closed my eyes to accept my fate, because I knew I couldn't prevent whatever was about to happen. Only recently have I remembered thinking "Well, I guess this is how I will die". With my eyes still closed and fully expecting to feel the pain of being trampled underfoot, it instead now felt like I was being pushed directly from in front of me and back upright. The crowd was pushing back at the stampede that was carrying me forward and pushing me down. As I opened my eyes to confirm this, I silently begged this frontal force to continue, because I was almost/about to regain my footing and balance. Thankfully it did, and my first thought was being very thankful to be uninjured and happy to be standing on my own two feet. The crowd push or stampede, which in reality only took a few seconds of time, was now over and had stopped just as quickly as it had started. My next thought however was pure rage at whoever was behind me/pushing me down, because that easily could have killed me. I turned around to yell at whoever it was, but everyone behind me has this strange look in their eyes and weird expression on their faces, kind of like "WTF just happened?" I even saw a bit of remorse in the dude's face/eyes behind me. I just turned back around without saying a word, thankful just to be alive, as I stood there in a crowd of half frozen rockers still waiting to get inside the coliseum and find a seat to watch the concert. As scary and traumatic as that crowd stampede was, I know I'm very lucky to have survived it AND see The Who perform an outstanding concert on December 3, 1979. At least I was luckier than the 26 fans with Who tickets that missed the concert because they were taken instead to local hospitals for their severe crushing/trauma injuries that occurred in the same stampede and/or crowd push I was involved in. And I'm definitely luckier than the 11 rockers with tickets to watch The Who perform on that cold winter evening of 12/3/1979 at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio, because tragically, they didn't survive the stampede/crowd push, and in turn, not only missed a fantastic concert, but the rest of their young adult lives, may they all R.I.P., they are not forgotten. I apologize for going off topic, but these two iconic British bands are forever linked in my mind to an event I can simply never forget.
Sûrement la plus belle des chansons, quelle que soit les versions les frissons qu'occasionne les chants les solo l'écoute, rien ne pourra l'égaler dans sa douceur et sa violence pour une plénitude tant attendue. THANK and more and more..
Phil Collins did John Bonham proud. Amazing band such great talent with Collins filling in effortlessly.
Tony Thompson did the bulk. Phil mostly followed along.
I thought that was Phil Collins. Thank you for mentioning him.
@@danfinn2210 he still killed it though…

Jimmy Page was on an astral trip...
uh, that's heroin but maybe similar
Erick Zúñiga Mata he was 10 feet high
Yes, but then he crashed right in front of the whole world...
But did he really need to play so untuned?!
