This is my favorite live and studio version of this song, it encapsulates the power, intensity, speed, range, vibrancy and just sheer awe-inspiring explosiveness that Led Zeppelin can muster in one song... musical perfectionist geniuses!
I agree. What's even more amazing is that (1) this was from 1969, (2) this was on their debut album, (3) and they were contemporaries of bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Because Led Zeppelin is usually associated with the '70s, it's easy for people to forget that they started in the late-'60s and that this came out in the same year as "Yellow Submarine" and "Let It Bleed." They were really ahead of their time in making this kind of heavy and intense music at a time when rock music was still pop.
You're absolutely right, and it was because they weren't like the beatles that they were vilified in the media, there's a ridiculous interview from 1970 where a journalist criticized their music on the basis that he couldn't hum or whistle to it like you could with the beatles. I think that's a compliment it emphasised how Zeppelin created more complex, nuanced and revolutionary music, rather than a catchy tune you can play on the radio (even though could've easily done that. But I always thought that the late 60's was the best time for rock n roll as it bred such an aggressive passion in music combined with avant garde styles of music fueled by an age of rebellion. In my opinion, even though they are viewed as gods by their fans and respected by most people, I steel feel like they're underrated, not of appraisal but of the acknowledgment of what the fuck they did for rock n roll and music in general, exceeding beyond bands from before them (the beatles or rolling stones) and after them (aerosmith and van halen) even though i still love them. But Page knew exactly what he wanted and how he wanted to achieve it, both on an industry level and a music level. Unlike other popular artists Zeppelin were seen as the first 'punk' type band, due to their resistance of the media and press. They were a unique band of the time who had the perfect recipe or alchemy of 4 perfect musicians.
The reason that rock n roll seemed to stagnate (excluding punk rock and other subgenres of rock) is because bands took the wrong lessons from led zeppelin. They obsessed with how they looked, fashioning their hair like them or wearing weird suits on stage because jimmy page did. They thought zeppelin was just about loudness but it wasn't, page understood the importance of the absence of sound being just as effective as the abundance of sound. He created a culmination of all the eclectic and vast styles of music and formed into one thing called rock n roll, but people seemed to miss that. They focused on communication breakdown black dog and whole lotta love but forgot about the rain song, going to California, tangerine or white summer. Rock n roll from then on had an obsession with only getting louder and louder, increasing amplification, getting thicker strings and tuning down the guitars. Out of Zeppelin's wide array of shades of music, but people only took one thing and focused on that. I find it sad that Zeppelin was as good as it got, not because they were bad, personally they're my favorite band of all time, but because music should keep getting better
I know what you mean when you say that you feel like they're still underrated. Their riffs have become such a fundamental part of the rock and roll canon that most of us take the band's impact and legacy for granted today, but they were total trailblazers back in the day. And for so many different reasons--the type of heavy music they created, their resistance to singles, their production and recording techniques, the way they integrated various influences and genres into their sound, and even the way they looked. Also, there probably has never been another band that was created with such a clear and singular vision like the one that Page had when he got those guys together. He wanted to create an intense, heavy rock sound that people had never heard before, and that's exactly what he did. Even though they were not a punk band, they had a proto-punk, DYI attitude. And yes, they were the perfect four musicians for their type of music. Page remarked that most bands up until that time had one great instrumentalist, but Zeppelin had 4 master musicians who were all great at what they did. I have to agree with him.
Exactly, and it was that vision that drove them to success, most artists lack a meaningful vision these days when that's the main component for great art
throwing his arm counting the group in so good Zeppelin was Jimmy's baby his manifestation then the stars aligned the four became one powerhouse of maybe the best rock group that will ever be :) ✨ @@KittyGrizGriz
The late 60s and early 70s demonstrates a level of musicianship in popular music that may never be replicated ever again-certainly not in the near future.
Led Zeppelin dropping masterpieces since late 60's . This song has plenty of different phases. Curiously they never let the music stop even when things get almost silent towards the end and then finishing with the same rhythm they started. Such a great band !!!
This is a whole film in one song. The agony, the intense erotic charge, the mastery of every single tone and note, not to mention the silence in between. This is sheer perfection. Thank you.

Just saw Robert Plant in Austin, on tour with Alison Krause. He sounds just as good now as he ever did. And they did 3 Zep songs. I’m not ashamed to admit I had tears streaming down my face the whole show!
As a boy I looked up to these guys as men of rock with their long hair and beards. As an old man now I look back at this video and think that they were extremely talented boys. Age changes context so much. Led Zeppelin only made one tour of Australia, however I was fortunate enough to see Robert Plant solo twice in the 80's. To this day the power of his voice still dominates my musical memories.

After all that is Led Zeppelin, to see Page be interviewed and that he does not use swear words in every sentence is quite refreshing. His true love for music and respect for other musicians just enhances his legacy. He is the undisputed (at least by normal people) GOAT and is polite and humble!
Everything he says when speaking of music is just so methodical. He glided thru interviews. And his music knowledge is unparalleled to anyone. I think he’s even above his doctrine. I’m not quite sure anyone knows more when it comes to music theory.

Nick Smucker A good drummer never needs more than a 5 or 6 piece sets.
Just a testament to the individual greatness of each member of Led Zeppelin and what each offered on full display.
the way jimmy counts in 1,2,3,4 one of the best musicians we will ever have privilege to witness a true master in many ways ,long live Zeppelin!
