    Actually Xiaomi service is pretty neat, if not the best, if you are residing in country with official warranty and sales. In South eastern Asia, xiaomi has one of the best after sales service in the market. Comparable to Sony and their TVs.

  • @nzonal
    @nzonal 6 лет назад +84

    Xiaomi has decent customer support in China, this is well known by Chinese. I don't think Xiaomi ever starts selling this notebook in North America yet, I guess that's the reason it never gets replaced easily.

    • @HoshinoMirai
      @HoshinoMirai 6 лет назад +9

      @JoelOchoa 6 лет назад +16

      Agree, it actually also has service in Latin America and in Europe. Most people i know from Spain and Mexico love Xiaomi. Xiaomi is not in US/Canada, so most US/Canadian reviews will complain about Xiaomi Service.

    • @VX2hugo
      @VX2hugo 6 лет назад +23

      Exactly right. To complain about a company's customer service you have to be the said company's customer first. Unfortunately if you bought stuff off a reseller that is not authorized by the manufacturer, you're not the manufacturer's customer and naturally not entitled to their customer service.

    • @nav_pk
      @nav_pk 6 лет назад

      The reason is that the moment they try to sell their products in the US market, the big players will wipe the floor with them by suing for patent vioations which are quite apparent.

    • @scdingundaroo
      @scdingundaroo 6 лет назад +4

      Its totally fair. Dave is a Canadian making his videos for the North American market. Likewise if someone from China (or another market that Xiaomi supports) were doing reviews about how great their customer service is in that particular market, well that would be totally fair too.

    To whoever that owns this laptop, I'm an owner too.
    Question:
    Are you sure that the expansion slot for the second SSD is SATA3 only? Several answers I found on some forums mentioned that it's actually M.2 but limited at x2 speed. But if a SATA slot can't run an M.2 SSD, then as per the evidence provided in the comment section here, it's SATA for real, I believe?
    FYI:
    - Before reinstalling Windows, REMEMBER TO SIGN IN TO MICROSOFT FIRST, otherwise Office license wouldn't be carried over. And my experience with Microsoft customer service in regards to this problem wasn't particularly a nice one, too.
    - Maybe you guys have found out by now, but you can actually change the keyboard backlit timeout to forever from BIOS.
    - BIOS update does solve the R/W speed for the original SSD (proving that it's in fact a x4 slot). But it will lock away the undervolting setting in XTU, which may not be a problem for the MX150 version owners (undervolting DOES prolong lifespan, so it's worth a shot), but owners of the GTX1050 version would really want to have a look at this link: techtablets.com/2018/08/xiaomi-mi-notebook-pro-bios-voltage-undervolt-patcher (I haven't personally tested it myself, and if it's inappropriate to post links as such, do let me know).
    - For UBUNTU users (to-be as well), newest version of Ubuntu comes with pretty shitty graphics driver. Mine is the GTX version, so I don't know about the MX150, but it was pretty surprising at first to find out that I couldn't shut down properly at all, and that Ubuntu WILL freeze after 2 minutes into the session. This can be fixed by updating Ubuntu and switching to a proprietary driver. Power management remains shitty though, so Ubuntu actually drains my battery faster than Windows in my case (around 4-5 hours tops). This may not only be the driver's fault, as switching to Intel graphics doesn't help.
    - You can only choose to boot with one GPU at once. There isn't a way that I know of that will switch seamlessly between GPUs depending on apps (at least in the GTX version).
    - ALSO, fingerprint driver for Linux isn't out yet (and I don't think it will be anytime soon), so it won't work.
    And do you notice that whenever you close the lid (mine is set to sleep on lid close) the speakers would sometimes beep or screech really strongly?

      Thanks for such an informative comment man. I was considering buying this but I need to use Ubuntu too so this helped me out a lot.

    xiaomi customer support is actually pretty great, unless you live outside of warranty area(which you definitely do), don't speak chinese(which you probably dont), did awful things to the laptop like opening the back plate(which you probably did), asked for shipping overseas(batteries are not permitted to be transported by air in China), changed important software(eg. windows edition). rip your friend's air.

    The laptop is for the Chinese market only, and Xiaomi's customer support in China is more than decent. Just don't expect to get that level of support when you are outside China with a Xiaomi product that was not intended for foreign markets. I can't believe Dave Lee neglected to mention this when every other review of this laptop warns viewers that this product does not come with international warranty.

      @Pety, there is no such thing as a Chinese keyboard. Well, there is, but nobody knows how to use it. The most popular Chinese input methods are designed for the English keyboard, therefore, Chinese laptops ship with English keyboards, but that doesn't mean they are intended for non-Chinese markets.

    The Xiaomi customer service is really great, one of the best in my opinion. But be aware this laptop is officially not released outside China. You are probably only able to purchase it via some unofficial/illegal channels from some private vendors on internet. So you have already voided your warranty when you buy it (just check the conditions). I think this is just a common practice with any other laptop OEMs. Simply because there are chances that the laptop be tampered by the unauthorized intermediate vendors, such as by installing unauthorized OS, sofeware, hardware, etc. On the other hand, if you buy official released Xiaomi products in your country, you will probably receive very good service. So this has nothing to do with the statement that "it's a Chinese company, so it has bad service" non-sense.

      I actually bought it through GearBest. I wouldnt recommend buying it through them if possible. Costumer service is way below average and the time it took for them go have it at my door from the time I ordered it was 2.5 weeks, they said it would only take about 7 days. But if you do manage to buy the computer from another retailer I would highly recommend this laptop

    Xiaomi as great service in areas they OFFICIALLY sell these products. I've had at least 7-8 Xiaomi phones, and a tablet. All the phones have worked perfectly without the problem, though the tablet died after 1.5 years. When I had to get 2 of my phones serviced because of physical damage, the process was fast and effective. In fact, they now have a system in which you can book a service center visit through an app so you don't have to wait. (They are No. 1 or No. 2 seller in India so service centers are crowded).

    If people want a good alternative, I'd check out the Lenovo 720s. It's a bezel-less 14 screen with an Mx150 and was just refreshed with 8th gen CPUs. I was able to grab it for $800 (mx150 w/ i5 8th gen and 8 gb of 2400 mhz DDR4) on Lenovo's site this holiday. And it blew me away relative to their older Ideapads which has atrocious trackpads and subpar dedicated graphics. I'd love to see Dave do a review, especially since not a lot has popped up from Lenovo since the Yoga 720. Also Asus in releasing an Mx150 thin and light ultrabook soon, so Xiaomi is no longer going to be the only one in the game at this price point.

    As far as I know, xiaomi's laptops have never been officially on sale in the US. You can certainly purchase them from some third-party resellers but do not expect to get great customer services, which makes perfect sense, doesn't it? That said, I really don't think the customer service - related complaints you made about this laptop are fair, given the fact that xiaomi has barely touched the US market. FYI, Xiaomi is known for providing outstanding customer services in its home country.

    • @scdingundaroo
      @scdingundaroo 6 лет назад

      Its totally fair because he is a Canadian reviewing for the North American market. Of course he should discuss the support situation in North America.

    • @limcheehean
      @limcheehean 6 лет назад +1

      Simon Davis He should have made it clear that he's talking about the North American market. This video is uploaded onto RUclips which is intended for audience from all around the world. For example, Xiaomi has official stores here in Singapore, which makes customer service a non issue.

    • @scdingundaroo
      @scdingundaroo 6 лет назад

      Lim Chee Hean Anyone who applies just a little bit of common sense knows he is reviewing for the North American market ... for instance in his reviews he quotes US prices!
      You don't see me complaining that is talking about a $900 laptop (here) or, for instance, a Dell gaming laptop under $1,000 (in other videos) when as an Australian none of these prices make any sense when I go to buy retail in Perth. You don't see me asking him to add a disclaimer that certain models of HP or Asus laptops (for instance) are North American models not Australian models. Do you complain when he quotes US dollar prices for laptops instead of Singaporean prices? No, I didn't think so.
      All it takes is just a little bit of common sense to realise that a Canadian, speaking English in a North American accent, quoting US prices, noting that companies that don't directly sell in the North American market don't offer support, is reviewing based on his experience in the continent that he lives for other people living in that continent.

    • @ranl.8936
      @ranl.8936 6 лет назад

      I can change my wording from "US" to "North America" and the statement still holds.

    • @scdingundaroo
      @scdingundaroo 6 лет назад

      Yes you can, but thats not the point. The point is that you say its unfair for a North American to say "beware this laptop doesn't have good support" to other North Americans when you admit that the company doesn't actually officially sell its products in North America. Given what you admit, what is unfair about his point?
