      iirc valve did use a similar method in order to detect spinbotters but then legit players sarted to immitate spinbotters by using a high DPI and moving the mouse fast and they got banned for that. Turns out that if Valve want's to not just kick but ban someone, they need more evidence than suspicious looking inputs. And just kicking spinbotters if there is not enough to warrant a ban wouldn't work either because they'd effectively tell the spinbotter that his cheat has been detected giving him a chance to adjust it and bypass detection.

    Controversial opinion. I don't think this should be banned given that is essentially just removing input lag. Those skills were developed to compensate for a limitation that existed in technology and now that this limitation is gone, that skill is no longer necessary. People with the best PC specs and no ping are going to be better at a game, this is essentially the same. The reason this is such a big deal is because no real keyboard advancements have really been made in recent years and this is a huge, rather than gradual jump. Even if they do ban the SOCD in other places tho there is still a real advantage to analog switches, its just a smaller one.

  • @Eijiken

    For what its worth, this became an issue in fighting games (mostly Street Fighter) because SOCD made it so that charge characters would have instant specials and allow for things that either requires frame perfect execution normally to be done with ease or simply would not be possible normally.
    Now your controller has to have it so that SOCD defaults to neutral (pushing left and right together makes it so that they cancel out) which is a solution but also allows for weird shortcuts because of how the game reads inputs
    In any case, its interesting how a different conpetitive gaming scene processes the same issue we dealt with awhile ago in the FGC

    • @FindecanorNotGmail
      @FindecanorNotGmail 4 месяца назад

      I recon this is an issue with keyboard controllers only, because with physical joysticks pressing both directions should be impossible.
      I wouldn't be surprised if gamepads do it in firmware for the D-pad though, because of how D-pads aren't supposed to, but sometimes do report two directions at once.
      I once made myself a Sega gamepad to USB adaptor, where I implemented this. The cheap knock-off gamepad I had got did not have a proper pivot and sometimes reported both left and right when I pressed up or down hard enough and I had noticed that some old games acted weirdly when that happened.

      @CubesAndPortals 3 месяца назад +4

      @@Klipik12 it's a super interesting topic tbh. Two things mainly: Games didn't expect ➡️⬅️ inputs from a lever and had unintended reactions to it, for instance walking forward while blocking. And, a lever needs to travel thru the neutral "no input" zone to go from side to side, but a leverless skips that, esp if it works like snap tap and goes from ⬇️ to ⬆️ without making you release ⬇️ first.
      These days, games expect or require that ⬅️➡️ and ⬆️⬇️ inputs cancel each other out to equal no direction input, and that your leverless controller should hand those inputs to the game to process instead of trying to "fix" it themselves with SOCD stuff like snap tap.

    • @Crushanator1
      @Crushanator1 3 месяца назад

      Yeah, it was a big enough thing that there was a brief period hitbox players were beating more established pros, simply because it let them functionally cheat charge moves. Like, walking forward with Guile and then doing an instant Sonic Boom into Flash Kick bc after you started walking you began holding back and down. SF6 just made simultaneous inputs neutral. There's still some minor speed advantages because you can get functionally zero time during where a joystick would travel, but it's not the literal cheating it was before.
      IIRC There's a firmware upgrade for the original Hitbox, the new ones have this built in, and the competing companies have all moved to do it that way as well

You're adding biology into a situation that's only the hardware level, monitor? That's hardware, internet? That's hardware, server ping? That's hardware and snap tap? That's also hardware. Snap tap just determines the function of a key when it's pressed which happens on the hardware level. Very basic setting, no one was complaining about the jump nade binds for perfect nade throws but all of sudden the crybabies started flooding when a key setting arrives on a keyboard.

    • @Mr.Reality
      @Mr.Reality 3 месяца назад +7

      @@TheRealName7 240Hz monitors, hall effect switches, and good internet being "cheating" falls flat because those are improvements within the standard boundaries of gameplay. They enhance what's already there. Better visuals, faster response, smoother gameplay. But these don’t fundamentally alter the mechanics of the game itself. They still require skill, reflexes, and strategy to make use of those advantages. They don’t automate or simplify actions in a way that bypasses skill.
      The snap tap feature you’re defending is not just a "basic setting." It's a hardware modification that changes the functionality of a key to perform complex actions with a single press. This isn't just improving your ability to execute in the game; it’s simplifying execution to a level where it’s no longer about skill but about letting the hardware do the heavy lifting for you.
      Imagine if there were a keyboard that could predict which key you meant to press and did it for you if you missed. Would you still say that's fair just because it’s "hardware"? Of course not. It’s a slippery slope, and snap tap is on that slope.

    • @roguescorner9042
      @roguescorner9042 3 месяца назад +1

      @@Mr.Reality It is a slippery slope, but it is what it is. Hardware will continue to get better and as a result, we'll continue to get features like these. It takes away skill? I guess, but skill doesn't matter as much as simply getting the win. That's all that matters. So if controller users should switch to keyboard to perform better, by that same logic, keyboard users should switch to these better keyboards.

    • @Mr.Reality
      @Mr.Reality 3 месяца назад

      @@roguescorner9042 I understand where you're coming from, but we need to draw a line between what's considered a natural evolution of gaming and what actively undermines the competitive integrity of it. Yes, hardware will always improve, and features that enhance gameplay will continue to emerge, but not all advancements are equal. There's a fundamental difference between hardware that enhance a player's natural skill like a 240Hz monitor or a high quality mouse and hardware that automate decision making or execution for the player.
      "getting the win is all that matters" seems to imply that how you achieve that win is irrelevant. But in any competitive arena, whether it's sports, games, or even chess, how you win absolutely matters. The satisfaction and legitimacy of victory come from knowing you outperformed your opponent based on skill, strategy, and mastery of the game not because your hardware made critical decisions for you.
      The snap tap feature isn't just an "upgrade" like better internet or faster visuals. It's crossing into the realm where the line between player input and automation becomes blurry. It's no longer about reflexes, timing, or strategy but about a shortcut that diminishes the need for precision and skill.
      Gaming technology will always evolve, but not all innovations are beneficial for the competitive landscape. If we start accepting features that automate critical gameplay functions, we risk turning games into contests of who has the better hardware, not who is the better player. And that, at its core, takes away from the essence of what competitive gaming is about.

    Some corrections: rappy snappy was a feature they announced a while back, that is based on furthest pressed key. In response to this, razer, who had already been losing the keyboard arms race, released snap tap. Wooting then released their SOCD feature (not rappy snappy) after everyone was like “well we bought ur keyboard to have the best, and this is greenlit by ESL and it’s much better than rappy snappy soooo” so in response they released SOCD after holding a poll. But SOCD and rappy snappy are fundamentally different.

      Rapid Trigger is literally talked about in exactly that way. You essentially need it for Valorant and Osu, and it's a bloody good bonus in CS2 as well. There is a reason nearly all Valorant pros are using Wootings/other RT enabled keyboards. For Osu, there are many, many players who consider it cheating. Honestly, it should be for Val/CS too, but RT is impossible to detect in use, unlike SnapTap/SOCD, and would have to be hardware ID banned, which is spoofable very easily.
      I went from Gold 3 to Ascendant 2 in Val inside of a month after getting a RT keyboard. I also ended up 6* (top rank/top ~2%ish or less of players) in Hunt: Showdown in about the same timeframe. At least for me it's been a crazy buff to movement in FPS games in general, like something just 'clicked' with RT, and I'm not even using the really good RT Wooting has, it's a much cheaper brand with 4x the latency.
      There hasn't been a hardware advantage this big since >125hz polling/flawless/high IPS mouse sensors became available.
      SOCD/SnapTap crossed the line into automating input, or more accurately the LACK of an input.

      SnapTap/SOCD/RappySnappy all alter your inputs by ignoring something you are still inputing in order to gain an advantage. It's not telling the game what you input, it's telling the game that you lifted off of a key when you in fact have not because it's more beneficial if you had. You did not time the action to counterstrafe, your keyboard did it for you.
      It's like using spellcheck in a spelling bee. It's doing what you SHOULD do, not what you did do.

The issue right now is if you have good timing or have movement close to the feature without even having the binds or hardware, you will still get kicked. I think they really need to adjust the cap because people who put years and years of practice to strafe properly should not be punished for being good. And that is what it feels like right now. The ban of Rappy Snappy/SOCD/Snap Tap is not just. It is the result of bad programming from Valve's side allowing such a short timer to change inputs and reach max accuracy. As much as I don't like Valorant, it does a few things correct; one of those things is an in-built timer on how fast you can actually counter strafe and reach full accuracy. It is not a slow timer by any means but it results in Snap Tap not being able to bypass that built-in timer from counter strafing and direction changes to full accuracy.
    Valve just did the scumbag approach to fixing this by kicking people for it in competitive play. What happens if you running normal rapid trigger and the game thinks you are running SOCD because it emulated the same inputs? It probably isn't possible but it could definitely happen out of a fluke. What should have been done is the Valorant method by adding that timer to limit the direction change speed to accuracy. If their player count wasn't already bad enough, it now is thanks to this move.
    TL;DR they should have programmed a timer in for counter strafing instead of banning the feature outright and taking the easy way out.

    In theory a keyboard manufacturer can mechanically connect the A and D keys via a rod so that both keys cannot simultaneously send input. At this point it would not be software automation but a physical limitation of the keyboard. Would this still be considered "cheating"? This isn't cheating, it's literally just removing hardware limitations. This is removing the need to learn unnecessary skill based around hardware limitation, not based on game mechanics. The less hardware limitations given by peripherals, the less you can blame them for your lack of skill. The REAL problem here is that the new hardware is not widespread, and this can be interpreted as an unfair advantage, but it's more that tech is just improving. It should be embraced as a new standard rather than be stomped out. To rephrase, this only removes latency from hardware, enabling you to not need to account for it in your movement, which is why I call it a skill based around the limitations of peripheral input rather than game mechanics.

    "Why remove a skill element in a skill based game" is nice sounding line, but this can be said for a lot of things in games. Why allow custom sensitivity or DPI? People can spend years to train and learn a specific DPI. I personally don't care as I don't really play games that benefit from this feature anymore, but "why remove skill from a skill based game" or "people have trained for x amount of time to develop this skill" is not really a compelling argument.
    I also wonder HOW they are detecting this yet CS has always been completely filled with other cheats like wall hacks and aim bots. Wish Value would focus their resources on actually detecting cheats that fundamentally ruin the game.
    Or develop Half Life 3, I would forgive Valve of everything if they just actually develop Half Life 3.

Wooting announced ages ago that snappy tappy was going to be released then razer tried to one up them by releasing what many assume to be cheats going out of their way to leave ethics behind. Wooting didn’t copy anyone, razer copied them. Even after it was released the community got upset so they decided to release SOCD as a business move. These features should be banned even though they are NOT an advantage for everyone, and I don’t see them banning rapid trigger and actuation. The keyboards are just fine, it’s a joke that people only bought it for SOCD but they will not regret the purchase regardless. I’ve had my wooting since I watched you and that optimum guys videos, best purchase I’ve ever made for myself gaming-wise, and I didn’t buy it expecting an advantage at all because that’s not how it works.

He even mentions in his videos it's not actually that bad in Overwatch and it's why there's not even any comparison between movement with a Wooting with and without SOCD, because you probably won't even be able to tell the difference. There's only really one particular instance where you can tell the difference, because it SOCD can bug a hero's model.

    Banning this feature is so stupid. If you own a 240hz monitor and play against somebody whos playing on 60hz, you also have a big advantage. Money buys "skill" in that case too, whys one allowed and the other one isnt? Its not as if anyone could afford a high refreshrate monitor. Same for better PC parts, headphones etc.
    Its not cheating, its just a better keyboard and a simple innovation. They didnt ban anti-ghosting when it became a thing, why ban this now?
    Companys will adapt to it. Banning it just because this replaced something that people learned over years is wrong. People that dont have a keyboard that supports this tech are still able to counter strafe, its just harder to do.
    It might be game-breaking in other genres and in that case it should be considered to get banned, but thats not the case for CS2 imo

    Counterstrafing is a pretty boring skill to have. Nowhere is it explained in the official game, it is basically an exploit, that makes you shoot precise faster after moving, because CS 1.6 was build in the half life engine and they never updated this legacy movement implementation. All modern games have no counterstrafing, look at Valorant or Spectre Divide. They should have updated their movement implementation, instead of dodging the problem like this. At least for me the game should be about teamplay, strategy, movement and of course good aim. It does not need artifical skill checks on top.

    How every key should work:
    1: As soon as I start pressing a key, it should register as a press, and as soon as you relase, it registers as a release.
    That is just how we should expect any keyboard to work. It's just that it was technically not realistic back in the days. (I assume)
    2: Only the LAST pressed key should get send.
    At least if you don't say "when I press all, I expect it to send all". Which is also a valid point of view.
    I guess a keyboard where the "flaws from the past" get removed, we can expect these 2 behaviours.

    No, rapid triggers are not affected
    And that should be the main reason to buy a keyboard like this
    Magnetic switches and rapid trigger (select activation point) for faster input
    No wooting is required and there are many cheaper alternatives.
    Even a Drunkdeer 60% with an aluminum case and new keycaps (depends on which ones) is usually cheaper or the same price as a wooting.
