In cowboy action I did Gun Fighter style. As a police officer I practiced shooting left handed in case I had injured right hand. I trained to draw and fire from the hip as soon as my weapon cleared the holster with my right. It paid off yrs later when I started shooting Cowboy Action. I broke my right foot in soccer and had to use my left foot to kick with. Now my left foot is stronger and better than my right foot. Now both feet are very good when kicking. ...as would be both hands, and much practice shooting. Pay close attention on grip feel, when hip shooting, and duplicate. Owning several Single Action Revolvers from 22lr to 454 I totally understand how much practice you have done to get to the level your at. The training I have had is Self Defense, Force on Force with Simuntions and Air Soft with both Pistols and AR's, my Single Actions are for Hunting and having fun shooting out to 100 plus yards with them. Again I am so thankful one of your videos popped up because I really have enjoyed watching you shoot and explain how and why you do what you do the way you do. I learned to do this 50 some years ago, pretty much the same way you are describing here. It’s a very good thing that you mentioned the berm because I think that something a lot of people forget. I would sometimes hit the target and sometimes I’d hit low and to the left. Many years later I found out that my dominant eye shifted about three times a minute and that my eyes didn’t focus on the same point. So, I would briefly close my left eye to force my right eye to be the dominant eye and after that my shooting improved quite a bit.
Great video! I tried to hip-shoot a while ago with my stock Vaqueros. Now I know that I started too far away from the target to actually get a feeling for it. Will give it another try using the method you've shown here.

I started training left (off) hand only a while back to get ready for ccw, now i'm better with left hand only then I am right hand only. I still prefer two hands with right on frame, left supporting if possible. But it surprised me after only a few weeks of live fire how I went from hardly able to keep shot on Is silhouette target, to now hitting all inside 6 inch ring and hitting bullseyes one hand off hand. The work pays off! Start close and move back for sure! Build confidence and competence 👍👍🎯

Really good vid. maybe 40 or so years ago I really started to realize that I needed to work on hip and point shooting. shooting at running jacks I actually was doing a lot of point shooting. Hip shooting felt a little like a gimmick at the time but it was fun and then a challenge. I have no idea how many rounds I have shot hip and point shooting... many thousands. To this day I still fire a few rounds both hip and point shooting every time I go out. hip shooting I use soda cans on the ground. Ten feet is about what I feel confident at but get close at 15' ? the strange thing is that I bought a laser and honestly I do worse with it than live ammo! What does seem to give me 'realistic' practice is those BB guns... LOL... I am talking those realistic 1911's and 1873 SAA that even have the Colt brand on em. the 1911 has a sorta realistic slide movement/recoil. That is where I beat my buddies LOL.. same thing tho....10' is decent with all shots either on the can or pretty darn close. 15' is? Well... sodas do not fear me but close enough for bad guys maybe. One thing not mentioned is grip angle. The grip angle is the most important thing. the 1911 and the 1873/clone SAA just ..... point well.. Something like a target gun... a Ruger Mk 1 or Colt woodsman or glock..... are useless they ignore the human wrist/forearm I don't have to prove this.. you can prove it simply by holding the guns mentioned and pointing em... see where the gun is actually pointed and if your wrist is in line with your forearm. I would take a SAA over a glock 100% of the time in a tense hip shoot situation and maybe 75% of the time for point shooting... cause... point shooting does allow for some adjustment. Using sights grip angle is a non issue. target guns don't care about grip angle. but if you are using your gun or think you may have to use your gun for something up close and personal? Grip angle is THE most important thing.

Its good info and pretty much how I do it except at the end when my accuracy starts to deteriorate, I then move in closer for 1 more good round. It makes for ending on a positive note. As for self defense carry.. I mostly agree with you. Most people will be better off using semi-autos but they do come with their own set of issues. I carry a SAA 45 Colt clone for SD in a belly band. Its super comfortable, concealable, and easy to draw. I am more accurate and familiar with my SAA. I have several semi-autos but dont shoot them as often. Thanks for the video...

Sometimes we let the nostalgia take over our brains and do stupid things like deluding ourselves we are in a movie that we are starring in! This is real life - not a piece of celluloid! I've heard of this referred to as point shooting. Kinda like point my finger and the barrel follows. I enjoy playing with it. When practicing the draw with my carry guns I practice to aim immediately after clearing the holster when the target is 10' or less. When the distance is farther I'll do the same but be at full extension after 3 to 4 shots. It's fun to have 15 rounds.

I practice with a BB gun. I have a Glock BB gun that fits in my duty holster and a Sig 365 BB gun, because that's what I carry off duty. Whole lot cheaper, quieter and no need to go to the range, plus the added benefit of working on recoil anticipation. Just a modern twist on Bill Jordan's wax bullets.
I am really impressed with the minimal barrel tilt you have when cocking your SAA's. Most people really tilt the barrels up to reach the hammer with their thumbs. You must have long thumbs. Unfortunately, I was really waiting for you to reverse draw with your left hand instead of drawing with your right and handing off to your left. When you finally did reverse draw, the camera was on your right. ARRRGGGGHHH! LOL. As you might notice, I admire Mr Hickok and carry my SAA's reverse draw style. No, I don't own Navy style revolvers in cap and ball .38 like Wild Bill.
That's a tough question. Longer barrels make muzzle flip easier to handle but are much slower drawing. One of my race guns has a 2 ounce lead weight in the grip that makes drawing very natural and quick but it doesn't mitigate recoil much because it's weight in the back.
Do you think I’d be that much ahead to start off with my pair of wranglers before I started using 45 colt vaqueros? I was just thinking I could get pretty close with a wrangler or my single six and 22lr is much less expensive than 45 colt.
I heard somewhere that you shouldn’t shoot at the same target twice because your brain starts to rely on shooting a practice shot to see where the bullet will end up. Not sure if that is true but found it interesting

I got real good shooting pool off hand.😂😂. Guess pistol would be similar. It just takes time. Training etc.. Your power eye is the thing that takes up the time
About 25 years ago I burnt my right hand at work so I learned to shoot left handed and kept the skill up. It paid off this past year when I had a right shoulder injury and could seamlessly just put on a left handed holster and carry that way. I've even repeated shooting classes shooting the second time left-handed only. Its a very good skill to have.
Now I want to get me a cross draw rig from Old Trading Post for my vintage Colt Frontier Scout and my Colt Peacemaker both in .22LR so I can do some can rolling and other tricks as well for it's more affordable than my Colt SAA .45's !!!

Hey sir. Great video. I understand why you say don't quick draw with live ammo but that's the old school westerners fought! Back then I guess it was live or die so if you shot yourself in the foot learning, that's just part of the process. Would you say that's why you don't recommend training that way? Too many accidents can happen? Also, I've never shot a 45. I've only owned 9mm handguns outside of my rifles. How much recoil, stress and danger does that put on you? Firing a 45 from the hip with one hand like that? Thanks in advance if you get around to answering these questions. Liked the video =)
There's a big difference between historical old west gun fights when 99% of the time men started with a gun draw under the table or under a coat and as likely as not shot the other guy in the back just like gangsters do now and high speed fast draw with an SAA. In the old west a 2 second draw was fast. When guys start pushing it faster than a half second, thumb cocking in the holster they get shot. THOUSANDS shot themselves in the late 1950s- the 70s doing just that. They eventually stopped doing any SAA fast draw competitions using live ammo. A few shot themselves and others by accident in the old west too.
I looked into the laser cartridges for at home quick draw practice but decided the Umarex CO2 BB SAA replica was a viable tool for at home quick draw training and hip shooting practice.
Hey another fine video. Well I took the plunge. With your advise I bought 2 Alchimista II 357 mag 4 3/4 barrels. Of course they are for Cowboy Action. Who is the supplier of the kits to slick um up? One thing that helps is that some of the newer replicas do have conversion models that use 9mm or 45 acp. Big help even for handloaders. Hip shooting not a skill I've been able to get past mediocre either hand

I know you don't consider the colt SAA a self defense weapon (no do I, for any single action other then maybe naa for those who can make those tiny things work) but if you could legally open carry one on each hip you'd be plenty effective at defending yourself if that last drill is any indication 😂👍👍

I was smart enough to get a couple of usfa single actions before they became collectors items. I have the speer plastic bullets for the 38 special that just use a primer for propellant and they work pretty well and as long as you can recover them they are reusable. I recognized something that I am doing wrong from reading your comments. I am trying to do too much at once by drawing and positioning and firing. Thanks for the course correction

Yep start close, relax and pay attention but don't try. Make sure you can see your bullets impacting safely. You will get a feel for it.

This is great, those laser cartridges don't fit my replicas. This helps a heap.
That similar technique I used to shoot my recurse bow instinctively, short distance and move back, let your muscle memory take over.
Great! When a guy gets decent, try drop and level up after each shot. That seems to accentuate muscle memory. Plus its real hard!

I heard somewhere that you shouldn’t shoot at the same target twice because your brain starts to rely on shooting a practice shot to see where the bullet will end up. Not sure if that is true but found it interesting

I got the cross draw holster from AR American.
I got real good shooting pool off hand.😂😂. Guess pistol would be similar. It just takes time. Training etc.. Your power eye is the thing that takes up the time
About 25 years ago I burnt my right hand at work so I learned to shoot left handed and kept the skill up. It paid off this past year when I had a right shoulder injury and could seamlessly just put on a left handed holster and carry that way. I've even repeated shooting classes shooting the second time left-handed only. Its a very good skill to have.
That's how to stay on top of your shooting! Most people never try off hand shooting.

Now I want to get me a cross draw rig from Old Trading Post for my vintage Colt Frontier Scout and my Colt Peacemaker both in .22LR so I can do some can rolling and other tricks as well for it's more affordable than my Colt SAA .45's !!!

Hey sir. Great video. I understand why you say don't quick draw with live ammo but that's the old school westerners fought! Back then I guess it was live or die so if you shot yourself in the foot learning, that's just part of the process. Would you say that's why you don't recommend training that way? Too many accidents can happen? Also, I've never shot a 45. I've only owned 9mm handguns outside of my rifles. How much recoil, stress and danger does that put on you? Firing a 45 from the hip with one hand like that? Thanks in advance if you get around to answering these questions. Liked the video =)
There's a big difference between historical old west gun fights when 99% of the time men started with a gun draw under the table or under a coat and as likely as not shot the other guy in the back just like gangsters do now and high speed fast draw with an SAA. In the old west a 2 second draw was fast. When guys start pushing it faster than a half second, thumb cocking in the holster they get shot. THOUSANDS shot themselves in the late 1950s- the 70s doing just that. They eventually stopped doing any SAA fast draw competitions using live ammo. A few shot themselves and others by accident in the old west too.
I looked into the laser cartridges for at home quick draw practice but decided the Umarex CO2 BB SAA replica was a viable tool for at home quick draw training and hip shooting practice.

Hey another fine video. Well I took the plunge. With your advise I bought 2 Alchimista II 357 mag 4 3/4 barrels. Of course they are for Cowboy Action. Who is the supplier of the kits to slick um up? One thing that helps is that some of the newer replicas do have conversion models that use 9mm or 45 acp. Big help even for handloaders. Hip shooting not a skill I've been able to get past mediocre either hand
I bought one with a 45acp extra cylinder and it fits and times in the others. A most convenient accessory.

❤...I can personally testify that carrying a Single Action Army revolver around will save your ass in court because if you get in a situation where you have to use it it looks so good in court when you're like no I carry a Single Action Army 1880s revolver.. they asked me why do you carry that and I said because it looks beautiful

I know you don't consider the colt SAA a self defense weapon (no do I, for any single action other then maybe naa for those who can make those tiny things work) but if you could legally open carry one on each hip you'd be plenty effective at defending yourself if that last drill is any indication 😂👍👍

I was smart enough to get a couple of usfa single actions before they became collectors items. I have the speer plastic bullets for the 38 special that just use a primer for propellant and they work pretty well and as long as you can recover them they are reusable. I recognized something that I am doing wrong from reading your comments. I am trying to do too much at once by drawing and positioning and firing. Thanks for the course correction

Hey Tuco! Could you show us how to properly dual weild a revolver? I'm not ambidextrous, so it confuses my muscle memory a bit. Shoot, cock back, shoot, with another revolver it became real hard real quick, couldn't seem to find the rythm

I'm good I can get off 3 shoots in under a sec either hand. My 44 single action all 6 in 5 seconds at 25 yards all kill hits.
