    Excellent video.
    Powder weight is added to the bullet weight when figuring recoil.
    A problem a lot of new shooters have as you know, is improper grip. Use your off-hand to place the gun in the shooting hand. This will help with "milking the grip" (moving your hand trying to get a better grip). If you have to move your hand around, take it away with your off-hand and reestablish the proper grip. I still remember the day everything came together for me with the 1911 45 Auto. During the practice session, everything just fell into place and felt natural and the sights were returning to point of aim. I shot Bullseye for the guard team at the time, and at one point was shooting 3000 rds per week.

    You are exactly right, It is more important to find a grip that works for you and your body vs worry about the so called RIGHT grip. If you remember years back they used to try to teach one single golf swing as the only "Correct" swing but, as the 80s, 90s, etc rolled on they learned the bio-mechanics is not the same for everyone and people who had some of what was considered the ugliest swings were hitting further and more accurate than those who had the right swing. Moral of the story who cares what the grip is so long as you are hitting your intended target.

    In terms of grip pressure, I always tell students to grip so tightly their hands start to tremble, then back off slightly until the trembling stops. Learn that pressure and always use it.
    Grip tape works great. I buy a roll of 3M stair tread tape at Hobo Depot and it lasts for many guns. I even apply the grip tape to the top of my slides if they have flat tops. That way if my hands end up wet, sweaty, bloody, etc, I can still rack the slide without slipping.

I've tried to call my shots, realize I must be closing my eyes at critical moment or brain not processing memory or something as hard to recall what I my 'call' was for the shot(got better with practice) now I need to do those double taps to see if I can mange recoil control. Also I recently started shooting 22lr 50ft indoor bullseye, unbelievable how hard it is to keep on target(I use a red dot so easy to see the 'wobble'. I certainly have weak wrists as sometimes I get 'stovepipes' from not keeping strong enough grip for gun to recoil internally properly.

    One thing you demonstrate but didn't talk about is elbow angle.
    Jerry Miculek explained it well on a "10 minute talk" so i knew to look for it: elbows out not down. Elbows down encourage a vertical movement in the gun because of the pivot angle. Elbows out cause the gun to more or less come straight back into the body, so you can just push back out and be in the same spot.
    Anecdotally on gun size, i love big magnums. One of the more painful guns i shot was a 380 PPK clone. I was shooting that back to back with an sp101 357 mag, short barrels, the ppk clone hurt

    Tocu thanks for doing this. Grip is key and the difference between a revolver grip vs single action semiauto is huge. Getting a ambidextrous wide safety that you can rest your thumb on helps w muzzle flip plus work the safety easier. Also the tape is a low tech cheap temporary fix but the glue on a polymeric grip doesn't last long cut it in strips don't wrap around. Better, companies like Cheely aggressive grips. Best grip strength if you don't want to do single arm hangs is Farmers walk w/o the walk. Look them up. Or use the horn of an anvil. Rolling Thunder or 2" pipe run a chain thru attach weights and hold, Thanks BY

    For some people, it helps to consciously pull pretty hard with the front hand back against the pushing force of the trigger hand. It locks the two-handed grip into a sturdier assembly. Focusing on super-tight squeezing by constricting one's relatively weak finger muscles might not work so well. Plus, the trigger finger won't feel isolated and easy. At least, it's how I think. Also, I trap my thumb, too. And I think that habit might work better for people with bigger hands who often shoot compact guns.

    Nice video. I may try out your over-the-thumb grip...looks interesting.
    Several years ago I began experimenting with point shooting. I put black electrical tape over front and back sights, which forced me to not rely on them. Then I just looked at the target, not aiming, not trying to use the pistol barrel or anything but just look at the target. I started from 3 yards, then 4, 5, 6, 7, up to 10. Several thousand rounds later, I can reliably hit a 7" circle on a fast draw (perhaps 1/2 second or so) from 7 yards, put about 90% in that circle. It just amazes me how well this works. At 15 yards shooting clays set on a berm, the hits drop to about 20%, but the other 80% usually make them jump or are "close enough for government work" as they say...in other words it would have given a bad actor a very a very bad day. BTW, I mostly use just a basic S & W M & P 2.0 or a Glock 19...similar results with both.
    This idea has been around forever, as archers in medieval times and before, never aimed down the arrow shaft, but rather looked at the target, and let their hand-eye coordination and huge number of hours of practice do the rest. For a perfect example of what I mean, look up RUclips: How to Shoot The English Longbow with Kevin Hicks.,..80 paces, no aiming and everything goes within a 10" circle.

    I've found with women first time shooters a revolver like a 38spl is the best to start/carry. I've taken every girl I've dated shooting. It's one of my hobbies, so if they don't like/support then we don't need to continue. Anyway I used to start them on a 380 or 9mm, but found when I went to the 6 in S&W they did much better. It was easier to grip even for my wife at 5'0 and small framed/hands. She could control it better than the auto round guns. I dud find her a nice everyday carry since she's not a fan of larger bags or loose clothing for a holster. I bought a Beretta Pico. It's small enough I can mask it with my hands alone. The I got home defense rounds in the lightest powder load. She nails it center mass every shot. I make her keep up on pull and shoot drills regularly. Speaking of I gotta clean this tiny thing It's been awhile. Lol anyway the pistol has the weight to compensate IF you get the 6 inch barrel not a snubbed nose. In a snub you might as well carry a small plastic auto.

    Grip tape broke my tailbone haha. I don't run any on my .38 just cause the grip is so damn good (for me). Pretty much any stock semi I'll have grip tape on it. Especially, any double-stack.

    how u hold it even my 40 Glock 27 and 36 can be snappy but used to it I shot my 357 mag for years before I got pistols so used to the recoil to help I did put rubber grips on my new 357 cause the woods grips would hurt between thumb and index fingers cause the way the metal backstrap is exposed on the 686 .

    Absolutely hanging every day even with both arms this creates traction and aligns your entire body keeps your posture, correct if we all do this, you’ll never see a chiropractor again more is better for hanging💪!

    I squeeze both as much as I can, and do a similar thing with my thumbs, but my weak hand thumb sticks up instead. I can’t seem to shoot well with my thumbs on the side of the frame either. My weak hand thumb tends to not stay put.
    Back in my skateboarding days both Mob, and Grizzly grip tape seemed to last the longest. I have yet to grip any of my guns up yet tho, so I couldn’t tell you if it would be good for it. I just know those brands were good for skateboarding

      I tried Mob tap. I like slip doctors the best for bending around the tight curves of the grips without peeling off. I think you'd like a taped grip.

      @@TUCOtheratt makes sense, I remember both mob, and grizzly being pretty thick. I’ll give it a try eventually

    The only thing I’d add since you didn’t mention it, is how much work is your support hand doing? Your support hand should be doing the majority of the work. Once I stopped using my left hand as little more than a paperweight and actually put it to use my control increased and I could then double tap similar to what you are showing in the video. My biggest challenge is just focusing time and energy on becoming a better pistol shot

    • @TUCOtheratt
      @TUCOtheratt  6 месяцев назад +1

      True. It is hard to make much improvement in pistol shooting unless you are shooting several times per week.

    Dear Tuco, your one hand hanging is one of the best tips Ive got in a long time. So yesterday I monted a bar in my garage cealing. Do you know how long I culd hang in one hand?
    Five seconds....... Im 5-10, 190 pounds, dont smoke or drink (that much) walk a couple of miles every day with the dog, Im 59y and feel like in good shape.
    But this really got me thinking. Its time to shape up as best I can, and you gotto be a strong as a Grizzly 😄

      Congratulations for trying that. It's been getting harder to do the last couple years. I'm 55.

    My experience is the opposite because gripping over the thumb prevents my support hand from obtaining full contract with the support side of the pistol; allowing the pistol to move more easily out of my grip.

    • @TUCOtheratt
      @TUCOtheratt  6 месяцев назад

      That is the most common experience.

    Hmm weird that with my 40 s&w if I grip really tight I end up shooting lower vs if I have a light grip my poa and poi end up right on. OTOH 22lr works much better with a stronger grip.

    On a revolver, do you pull back into the gun with your weak hand while pushing out with your dominant hand?

    • @TUCOtheratt
      @TUCOtheratt  6 месяцев назад

      No. The push-pull thing doesn't work for me.

  • @cpnolto
    @cpnolto 6 месяцев назад

    Unretaliated to this particular video, what do you do as far as cleaning your single action army's? I don't want to underdo the cleaning but I also don't want to go to the other extreme either. I don't always break the gun down every cleaning. I run a swab down the barrel and clean up the cylinders openings with the swab. Once in a while I pull the center pin out and clean it up more thoroughly. What do you do? As far as products go - I use Ballistol.

    • @TUCOtheratt
      @TUCOtheratt  6 месяцев назад +1

      If I'm shooting smokeless just like you. After shooting black powder I start with soap and water and finish with balistal. Every third time or so I break it down to the small parts if shooting black powder.
