    One way I learned to avoid flinch/anticipation and be able to concentrate on just grip and trigger pull (especially in indoor ranges with multiple shooters), is to double up on my hearing protection. I started wearing shooters ear plugs with memory foam with high decibel protection ear muffs. Aside from greatly protecting your hearing, you can easily get used to the recoil of any firearm by trying to eliminate the auditory distraction and be able to concentrate on accuracy and the tactile feedback of the machine on your hand. You will start to feel like you are just operating a machine instead of setting explosions in your hands each time you pull the trigger. And you will get there much faster and with lesser ammo count.

      After hearing this, I'm wondering if my in ear, earbud headphones will work for the same principal (without them on)... because I don't have in ear, foam ear plugs as I need more money first

      @Von4hunnid Год назад +2

      But on the other hand you have to remember what you are training for. In a real life situation if you are trading fire with a threat your not going to have that double ear protection to help you concentrate. When you are at the range for training purposes your are supposed to put yourself in uncomfortable situations (ofc while following the safety guidelines) but you should train to be ready for whatever whenever you can’t rely on range equipment if that’s not something you’d typically have in real life situations… just my opinion 🧏🏾‍♂️

    It's refreshing to see someone who understands biophysics and the natural and instinctive motions we make during repetitive motions/actions and skills execution. W e worked on these same drills, including for rifle, when I was an up and coming shooter by my father (ex-navy WWII commando) and a good instructor when I was in the service. The simplest things can lead to the biggest frustrations when we don't understand them.
    Relaxing and not physically anticipating something, anything including actions in competitive athletics is tougher than we think because it is such an instinctive thing.

    After not going to a range for longer than 2 months I was developing the recoil anticipation BUT of course I realized i was doing it after a while and so I focused more on isolating the trigger pull. Thanks for posting this video. It’s a quick reminder to me that recoil anticipation will in fact cause me to shoot low. It will also remind me that if In anytime I go with someone else to the range, and they shoot low after establishing proper sight alignment then they are anticipating recoil. Again, thanks.

    I overcame the recoil anticipation/flinch/jerk by amping myself up. More specifically…I think about being threatened or someone threatening my family. May seem counter productive…but when doing this I find that I go into “survival mode” and stop thinking and react so to speak. Basically I was amped or “pissed off” to the point where I didn’t care about recoil and was focusing purely grip/stance/alignment and everything else fell into place. Works for me and may or may not work for others…figured I would throw it out there. Good video as always. Be safe fellas!!!

    My best learning was from a rare book for instructors (shooters too). "Beyond the Muzzle: The Firearms Instructor & Shooter Development Guide". I forgot the author. A Google search will find it. Some of the items in this video are in the book. This material changed the way I think of gun fighting. Before I was training to shoot, today I'm training for defensive fighting. Nice quality video.

    This video has an interesting point about trusting the body. I try not to anticipate as much as I could, but I catch myself clearly doing it sometimes. I always wonder if there is something my body isn’t doing correctly enough, so subconsciously I feel the need to use anticipation to stay in control.

    I personally like to induce failures using dummy rounds (randomly) when trying to fix antsipation or flinching. I think there is some merit to 2 second limit when firing the second shot however I think that still leaves room for the person to 'antispate' the hammer just dropping thus not getting the unwanted antsipation / flinch.

    I use a two man flinch drill. Two people, the shooter and the loader, work together. The loader will load the weapon, while NOT being observed by the shooter. The loader will determine at random if a round gets chambered or NOT chambered. He then hands the weapon to the shooter who will aim and fire, not knowing if it's actually got a round in the chamber or not. If he has a flinch, and there is no round in the chamber, the flinch will be clearly revealed. KNOWING you are flinching is the first step toward getting rid of the flinch. Repeat this drill a number of times during each shooting session.

    I practice this drill, however the brain starts to learn the 2nd shoot has no recoil and you won’t flinch. Have a buddy load up a mag alternating live and snap cap rounds at random then try it….you’ll be very surprised how fast that flinch comes back when you don’t know if the next shot is a bang or click. If it’s too easy - upgrade to a more powerful round and try again.

    Instead of trying not to anticipate the recoil, learn to ride it out and time it better. The whole "be surprised by the shot" is nonsense. Especially when you're shooting quickly(which you will be 99% of the time in a real life pistol engagement), practicing this slow fire squeeze the trigger stuff is pointless. Learn how to pull the trigger quickly, learn how to keep the gun on target, learn how to anticipate the shot PROPERLY and keep it from moving that way. Shooting a pistol fast is different from shooting a pistol slow... So practice shooting it fast.
    Also, I'm always a bit wary at stuff like the instructor slapping the front of the gun to simulate recoil. Yes, it sort of simulates what makes the gun do, but it's easy to not anticipate when you've got an orange gun and someone is slapping it. I'm just not sure that it translates to good training or effectiveness in real world shooting. Maybe I'm mistaken. But imo all it teaches is how to keep a fake gun still while someone slaps it around a bit.
