You, sir, are a legend! I came back to this video after turning this setting on just to say thanks! Been vlogging with the a6300 / a6400 with 10-18 for years with it turned off and my footage is waayy better now.
Amazing how only just yesterday, I put the excellent Sigma 18-50 on my A7IV and noticed really terrible distortion in the background where I had straight lines. But I found this setting and was relieved to know it wasn't just my lens. And I continue to be amazed with this camera that it can take cropped lenses and the quality is excellent.
Hey Mark, your video sent me down a rabbit hole to learn more! Like you showed, lens distortion comp makes the subject less barrel-like when shooting at a wide angle. But when the lens is zoomed in (let's say 70mm), the lens creates a pincushion distortion that looks like the opposite of the barrel effect. So when you turn distortion comp on, it works in the reverse way, adding some of that barrel effect back in. It's cool that it recognizes and adapts to whatever focal length you're using. When shooting interviews and portraits at 70mm and higher, I might actually opt to keep distortion comp off because the pincushion distortion makes people appear less "balloon-like" than with it on. Of course, there's no right answer, it's all up to the individual's preference! Thanks again for making me think more about this.
I just heard about this because I bought the Sigma 60-600 and it had this line in the manual (yeah I'm actually trying to read a manual on something!) "CAUTION On cameras where lens aberration correction is controlled with 'ON' or 'OFF' in the camera menu, please set all aberration correction functions to 'ON'(AUTO)." One Google search later and I'm here! Thanks for the info. Really helpful!
**NOTE: if you are using the kit lens or certain Sony lenses the auto function is on and greyed out. But when you switch to another lens like a 3rd party from Tamron or Sigma, you will see that the distortion comp is OFF

I'm a creator on TT and the only helpful video regarding the Dist. Comp. is from your channel. Placed an order on the FX30 and been really struggling to know whether a wide angle prime is a good investment or not. Thanks in advance :)
the distortion compensation corrects for barrel distortion, but you will still find stretching in the corners of any wide angle lens regardless of compensation. it’s just the physics of the lens. Here’s a video talking about why you may not want to shoot vertically for your content. ruclips.net/video/BJeL1lvZa8U/видео.html
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I see, so the consideration is to either reframe horizontal videos using wide angle lenses and keep subjects in the middle or get a lens with minimum stretching... thank you very much sir much appreciated :)
Hey, I own a Sony A6400 but 'Distortion Comp' is set to Auto and it's greyed out, I use a 16-50mm lens mostly for wide angle shoot as that's what I have as of now, whenever I import the .arw image file in lightroom, I see this barrel distortion but after a few seconds it goes away but sometimes when I put some presets on that distortion thing comes back again. What can be the issue?
no issue there - it's greyed out because on sony lenses it's on by default. On 3rd party lenses like sigma you have to turn it on. This will apply to video and JPEGS. What you're seeing in lightroom is when importing the raw photo (.arw in sony), LR is applying the automatic lens corrections but it just takes a second. Everything is working as it should for you
Thank you! I have another advice: Buy a dummy battery! That was the only method, which fixed my overheating problem with and Sony ZV E10. And: Buy a Sandisk Extreme Card with at least 128 GB of space! I had a Sandisk Extreme 64 GB and I got a lot of image problems (red image, image fliker, corrupted files, etc.) with this card.
glad to hear the dummy battery solved your heat issue!! and yes - it sounds like your card went bad - but for sure at least 128 so you can record for a good amount of time 👍👍
Yes :) From about only 40 minutes before it shut down because of overheating, it now didnt overheate after over 4 hours of recording in 4K with the dummy battery! With the dummy battery the ZV E10 now recorded for over 4 hours straight without overheating/shutting down because of that. The overheating symbol appeared after about two hours of recording, but it never shutted down. :) Also I now have got the SanDisk Extreme 256 GB and with that card, there are now no image errors, corrupted files, etc. at all any more :). So if you have the same problems (overheating, image errors/red image for a frame, corrupted files, etc.) like I had, then buy a dummy battery and the SanDisk 256 GB Extreme and youre good to go! :) :) Youre also welcome to share this two advices from me in an upcoming video! :) Greetings from Germany! the distortion compensation corrects for barrel distortion, but you will still find stretching in the corners of any wide angle lens regardless of compensation. it’s just the physics of the lens.
Everything is working as it should for you
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis okay buddy thanks for your reply 🤗 appreciate that 👍🏻
TKS!
Also I now have got the SanDisk Extreme 256 GB and with that card, there are now no image errors, corrupted files, etc. at all any more :).
So if you have the same problems (overheating, image errors/red image for a frame, corrupted files, etc.) like I had, then buy a dummy battery and the SanDisk 256 GB Extreme and youre good to go! :) :)
Youre also welcome to share this two advices from me in an upcoming video! :)
Greetings from Germany!
SuperExtreme
Thanks💪
The issue I am having is that the shot is tight for some reason on video, but when I switch to the camera, it's wide (using 16mm). I have ZV E10 with a factory lens. I can't seem to figure it out ::tears::
The video is 16:9 and photos are 3:2. So the frame will be different. Also ion you have active stabilization on - that will cause a further crop in video
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Oh that makes sense. So there is no way to fix it? ::tears again:: Thank you for your reply :) I think I'm just going to purchase the Viltrox 13mm. I think it will do the job for me.
sony 35mm lens need distor comp auto???
always have it on auto - sometime it’s on by default, but sometimes it isn’t
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thanks for reply
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis For catalyst Stablaization, should i need steady shot off?
do they work in video?
Yes.
Will this work on Sony 11 mm ?
The sony 11 is automatically corrected - it will be greyed out in the menu
Thank you so much for the quick reply, I appreciate and love your channel, specially your humor. @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 😛
What to do if it’s disabled ?
If you're using a sony lens it will be disabled because it is automatically applied. It will be available on 3rd party lenses like sigma and Tamron
Good video
Thanks!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thanks to you, you know I don't know much English and you convinced me with your good videos, I have already been for about a month and a half if I am not wrong about subscribing to your channel, I am keeping it and it is a bit difficult about cameras and I bought the ZV E10 As the first camera and the menu is difficult but little by little again thank you I hope you understand my writing because as I told you I do not speak much Spanish 🙂🙂🤣
@@JUANASDRUBAL I understood perfectly - your English is great!! 👍
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thanks i just try
My Sony's are so old, they don't have that setting --- in the same place is a setting for "steam pressure" -- Cheers.
hahaha - nice, J.R.!!
Been correcting the distortion in post without knowing there's a setting on my a6400 haha
life changing!!
greyed out on my 16-50mm kit lens. sad
Nothing to worry about - that's because it's a Sony lens - it's automatically applied. You'll have the option on a 3rd party lens like the Sigma
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thing is, when i use 16mm there is very noticeable distortion and vignetting, I guess because its a kit lens
Also, who would want warped paper rolls!!
the people who gave me a thumbs down - obviously 🤣
haha I like your energy :D
It’s greyed out 🙄 It won’t allow me to enable it :(
if fits a Sony lens it will usually be greyer out because it’s enabled by default. if you put a 3rd party lens on, like a sigma, you will be able to select it
"i desperately want to look nice" 🤣🤣
🤣🤣
Thanks mate , you saved my *ss 🍾😍
If anyone can help me am new to filmmaking and I wanna get camera and my budget 700$ and my goal is to learn how to shoot professional video with this camera and possibly start my career with it.I wanna know if ZV-E10 (with kit lens) is better than Lumix GX85 or GH4 (with two lens under 700$)
Thank you so much brother! Damn i thought it was ON by default lol This dosent make logical sens why Sony dosent make it ON before selling there cameras... who want distortion and a big nose anyway 🤣
1:06 starts here
My a6700 refuses to enable this.
If you have a Sony lens, it will be greyed out because it’s on by default and can’t be switched off. you can turn it on or off with 3rd party lenses like Sigma
It’s greyed out for me 😩
It will be greyed out if you’re using a Sony lens - it’s automatically applied
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis oh yes it’s the kit lense
Seems like I'm the only one having color fringing problem? Is so bad specially on portraits
what lens are you using?
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 18-105g f4 crop lens
✌
I wanna look nicer!!! 😁
🤣🤣
Says sony a7s lens distortion compensation: "this function currently disabled"
If it is a Sony lens that will be greyed out because it is automatically applied
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis So why there isn't option to disable it?
You can't make me turn anything on 😲 Haha
You need to, Kevin. You need to!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis But Doug takes the perfect video every time... No warpy stuff. It is actually super easy to record with those Sony cameras. Got the ZV-1 back from repair and it works! 2 AF monsters, looking forward to some simpler recordings 👍
@@KPGuitarStudios glad to hear about the poor ZV1!! Did they tell you what happened?
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Replaced SY1112.... So detailed 😛 Perhaps it was the suck-o-meter? There was too much video suck being recorded haha
@@KPGuitarStudios good choice removing that
thank you!!!
Wow thank you! Lightroom now auto fixes the distortion (a6300). I wish I knew this existed 3 years ago 🥲
Yes - luckily lightroom has profile corrections now - but if shooting video - this setting is a MUST
My camera has a buzzing sound, I film ASMR which I need silence but the camera has a background noise:( before I start recording and during!
