I think the composition of the shot from the pro is far better. The shot is so interesting and the boots really stand out. Prove that everything needs experience. Respect to all the photographer and cinematographer.
The thing is.. This is true. There are people who take great shots with average gear, setting up the camera perfectly for the scene and do little in post edit. And I've seen close friends who provide photoshooting services who takes mediocre shots and piles on heavy editing to bring out the best of their shots. Believe me, their colour balance and scene looks skewed in my opinion.

that's what happens when you're starting out when you learn more about technicalities the creativity is stripped as you try to cater to the technical to make that aspect good
I like the premise of this, pretty cool idea, but Josh seriously deserves more credit. His shots were creative and done really well, especially for only have 5 weeks of experience!! His progress is crazy in such a short period of time!
context is key. He clearly said good gear makes a difference. Despite all these people telling us constantly you don't need good gear to make good video, we all know that good gear makes a difference. It would be foolish to think it doesn't make any difference at all. Otherwise, no one would have good gear. But it's not gonna make ALL the difference.
I’m impressed with this video. It cuts down to the real deal: skill is worth money. Period. Keep practicing Josh! I’m excited to see you keep growing! And i think you’ve got an extremely good coach there
@@JohnPratt95 They did mention the editing several times, to then it's post production and it's group in with what they consider overall being a professional.
Seeing as you’ve shone the spotlight on Josh’s lack of ability, would seem really inspiring to feature his work after 6 mo, then 12 mo, 18 mo, 24 mo, and really highlight how he’s rapidly improving. Plus, bonus for you, if he makes big gains, it will really highlight the quality of your teaching. I’m in Josh’s corner, cheering him on. Stick with the process and reach for the stars, Josh... you got this!!
Im gonna say my opinion on this, even if i dont know thing about photoshooting, yet knowing the saying equipment doesnt make the difference, experience does etc from woodwork. Josh had the best camera, didn't make the best job while doing this 5 weeks. Jake didnt have best gear, didnt make the best job. nothing is the best. Josh didnt have those colors THAT vibrant, but those shoes were colored... like real shoes. Jake had those colors, but technically lied with that shoe color. My point probably is, you can make PRO looking commercial, but sacrifice the full truth of the shot and also you can make truthful shot while sacrificing the pro-looking.
@@jakubcisar6576 That really doesn't make sense. It doesn't matter if it looks "fake", the point of a commercial is to make things look appealing so that they can sell the product. What you probably mean is a difference in editing style, Jake clearly has much more experience in editing and framing his shots whereas Josh does not.
@@jakubcisar6576 I think you are mixing things up... Professionals have different tastes. Some of them tend to prefer more natural looks while some don't. "Looking PRO" doesn't imply "less natural" necessarily. In this case, I think what he meant was out of the professionals who do tend to not mind "lying", this is the way they would do it. There are professionals who tend to stick to more natural means but they still have to tweak the pictures to add finishing touches. When you say "not pro", I'm pretty sure you mean to say the natural one done professionally. Whichever it is, "not pro looking" literally means this is what NOT to do if you want to get better from being an amateur.
Bro if you start on something you want to get better right. How would you get better if you are not able to take critisism. Im sure josh apreciates them pointing out what could be better and what went wrong. Either way you cant learn anything or get better if you yourself dont know what your doing wrong.
I feel like Josh did a better job than he is getting credit for in the video. That shot with shoes over glass was awesome and that wasn't the camera but Josh's creativity.
josh made a mistake, his video's focus was more on the guy rather than the shoe... he did get some good shots, but the veteran had shoes in every shot...c'mon you are making shoe advert !! you need to give the shoe more screentime !!
Well, they are obviously on a profesional level, with TV commercials jobs and stuff like that, of course they think 600 it's not on their level, but for us its such an amazing camera obviously
Personally I preferred the beginner one, not just because of the quality, but because of the angles. The pro did a lot of far angles which personally felt a bit less creative. PLUS he did way cooler shots such as the model walking over the glass and him looking over the fence while "TAFT" popped up. Well done, Josh.
Exactly. The pro’s version was just bad for a commercial shooting. No product, bad skin tone, and just overall boring to watch. Only the last shot was good in the “professional” one

The boots walking over the glass was one of the best shots I’ve seen in a while. Everything you said is understandable but, you should definitely shine light on the creativity. With some color correction, I’d have to put my vote for Josh. All he needed was to focus on the boots a little more and to brighten some shit up.

Josh was really good for a rookie. Like many others have mentioned, I also really liked the shot he captured with the glass! I think it’s worth noting how it was probably the first time he shot with a RED camera, so he may not have been comfortable yet. Meanwhile, Jake being a professional, he most likely has some experience with a camera similar to the one he used in this video so there is some level of familiarity. Both did a great job!! I’m learning from all three of you in this video. I just saved up and bought a camera around $600, so it makes me feel better to know what is possible with a camera of that price range (with both practice & learning to edit of course). I plan to have clients within the next year. 🙏
As someone who worked in one of Berlins best communication agencies: Josh's: - smooth artsy modern feel - needs colour work - focus could be too inconsistent - has a great alternative vibe Jake's: - classic modern ad feel - classic colouring - frame composition on point - misses an experimental uniqueness, still everything works perfect Both did an excellent work, still both have a totally different vibe of storytelling, artsy experimental vs. classic ad
misses an experimental uniqueness,-- DISAGREE, too subjective to call. If those were my boots I would be happy--and that is what matters. Its not an art film-- its a commercial. And ppl vibe with what they are familiar with. Hence why Marvel always is the same.
@@africanhistory did you read on before you chose to take on a position to feel being right? :) it's perfect as it is, still misses a little experimental attitude for me personally to standout:) you re welcome to disagree, but not act like i would have said it's a bad commercial, or that it misses the point. It's still perfect as it is
@@jimmyjones5492 I have to agree with you. I know nothing about cameras or editing. But the shots and final commercial told me, yeah that's a boots ad. Even the positioning of text and the ending shot was a classic. Not a bad thing but definitely not experimental.
Also: ehm bad color correction from Jakes side. I feel those boots do not look like red clay but more like brown. If those boots also came in red clay color it wouldn't be an issue since that option would exist. But if it doesn't it's a huge misleading information that would fool the consumer. But other than that, Jake's is the clear winner. The other kid had really amazing ideas and within a year he is going to be on a whole another level

Yes experience do make the difference, when I was in my junior high school I got into a photography competition, and at that time I can't afford to have a decent camera, so i grab my dad's Iphone 4s and shoot with it and close the gap between my competitors who are using DSLR cameras by applying my experiences on how to tell story within the picture combined with my basic knowledge of photography and the result of the competition I won 1st place. So I hate it when people who wants to start but alwats whining not having a proper gear.
I like this. I always try and become better instead of just wishing I had a better camera. I recently upgraded from a canon 70d to a canon R. I’m still trying to improve. @eye_ofthelens
@WakinTheDeadFan i did and it still the same, if you only have expensive gear and got no experience or knowledge about photography is still the same, u will only shoot a blank forest without any purpose, have you ever tried it? I bet not 😜 Edit: not even cheap camera I even borrow my friend's phone to be exact.

The main difference I notice which they did not mention is that Josh's video may work better as an ad for a clothing company or store that sells the whole fashion package rather than only the boots. It may also work if a celebrity is endorsing the boots. As the client may want to focus on both the celebrity and their product. Josh treated it like a general Cinematography project and did his best coming up with a creative solution. Jake on the other hand focused on creating an ad for shoes. All shots had the model with shoes and the focus was always on shoes. This shows how much experience Jake has working with Clients. He knows exactly what to film according to the situation.
@@sandytorreslifelessons4155 Read a few other comments on Josh's video so wanted to share my view that his video will work better for a Client looking for an ad for a store or clothing line.
I agree. At least get some of his feedback with using the Red and his creative train of thought. Instead of a comparison, they always spotlight and focus on how well the pro does with cheaper gear and get his thoughts/video time.
The gears make a huge difference when you have the skills to start with. As a senior web developer, I can write high-quality code on a computer from the 90s but it will make me very slow.
Josh's shots were way more creative than jakes, the walking through glass and the boot cross was incredible. Jake 'color corrected' the "BROWN" boots so much they look like red clay. I'd love to see what Josh is doing in 5 years.
I agree, despite the focus being off, and a few mistakes. I like how the Red camera commercial came put, and I did not like the color grading on the second video with the DSLR.
Creativity is not always good, and it also is only one factor. In general, Josh's commercial was simply not as good, aesthetic, and professional as Jake's.
@Kira you talk as if any "pro" in any profession call themselves "pro" are all scam there're always reasons they are the "pro" of their field, the hardware is just a tool mate and just as you said, it's the knowledge that make the difference
@Kira Well, yes all you need to know is composition, framing how to tell a story and know how how to post process images and all that you can gain in many years of shooting. I have a good camera and I have software to post process and I have basic understanding of photography but I am nowhere near those you call scam pros. If that is so easy why not everyone become a photographer? Why people still use their services? They have years of experience and that makes them pro. You can apply that to any skill, not just photography.
The best thing I seen from josh is he got a detailed close up shot of the boots. It not only about the shots looking good but you have to sell the product too. Those close ups of the detail on the boot was a very nice touch.
Josh's video appeals to a rugged man who prioritizes style only as a close second to actual utility. The other guy's video appeals to stylish guys who are trying to get the "rugged" look. Josh could market to adults. The other guy can market to the teenage / young adult crowd who desire to look hip.
Yeah, it is also edited way smoother to the beat. Like the beat drop in the middle and then going by the glass actually looked so good. Jake's commercial just seemed boring and unoriginal. Not hating on him or something like that, but it just seems like that his commercial missed the creativity and ambition of a rookie. Like it obviously is produced in high quality, but if the ideas themselves are boring, it'll still end up being boring. I mean it is a commercial for a pair of shoes but still just the way Josh approached the whole commercial idea was so much better imo.
@@firefly4140 Josh's commercial doesn't even show the product in many angles, and it doesn't tell you what the shoe is, it just says "taft". I personally didn't like the walking in glass part just because it's such a cringe thing I always avoid.
the thing is the camera will "see" colors differently than our eyes, color correction is meant to bring the colors closer to what a person see rather than the flat colors of the camera
@@BeetleBuns wrong, in advertising you always add colors, brighten it up, removes blemish and stuff, professionals do this because it is deemed more attractive to the eyes of many, the real world isn't really colorful and vibrant there's a difference in adjusting to colors to right amount and just blatantly overdoing it in advertising there is no such thing as color correcting, everything gets bloomed up
@@MrTytyjohn64 That's true but the colors of the boots end of looking a different color than what they really are. Joshs looked brown but the other was another brown. I guess its important to not edit so hard.
Giving someone a RED without a Gimbal, no assistant who's pulling the focus, no tripod, nothing. Just a pro body, lense and monitor. I wouldn't even try to get great shots with that setup. How should you even hold the camera steady and pull the focus by yourself? Well you could try to get decent shots in 120-200fps but you won't be able to get a nice steady shot at 25fps. IMO that RED setup would even lose against an iPhone with a gimbal. And the pro wasn't shooting a commercial which you could charge a "thousand of dollars". He did really good work. With that setup he was using I'd pay him 250 bucks. Like, wow the footage was exposed correctly, nice colors, etc.. But the short ad lacks in detailed composition. I mean the shots were mostly nice but at the end of the clip he's cutting the models head off and he's not pointing at the shoes closely enough. I mean a beginner would do these mistakes... And in one shot the camera is moving to the left and in the next one it's moving to the right. NEVER EVER DO THIS! Well in the end the Pro did a decent job with his setup but the commercial looked like it was shot by someone who's a pro freetime filmmaker. Short: The comparisons just sucks because noone would try to film on a cinecamera without any other pro gear. Like you bought a mercedes S500 but they only delivered the chassis and forgot the interior.
I work in a different area, which is slightly connected to cinematography so not a pro speaking here. Still I have to agree. This so called „pro“ did a lot of color correction but some of it was pretty bad. As a customer I would habe told him to change it cause it crazily looks unnatural. Also the cuts are quite poor. First the point mentioned above with the camera movement, but also the fact that he has really nice music and just boringly cuts it all in a line without switching some stuff up. Lets just hope thats because they „only“ had one day and in a actual professional commercial he would put more effort and maybe try several options.
@@Ash12345p Yo. I'm studying these kinds of thing. I'd never ever say that I would do it better but I'm able to criticise on a high level. I've already filmed things like these and they were looking good but yeah I also did mistakes. So I can tell out of experience and knowledge what's wrong with these clips.
Even without the magic of post production I'd still prefer the second one if I were the client, just based on the fact that in every shot my product was in it, specially at that last bit. You want to sell the product not the model. But I guess it's something you learn through experience and Josh already has the talent and creativity, just needs a bit more polishing and experience and he'll be more awesome.
I reckon Josh did super well putting a commmercial together and he definitely showed creative promise, I'm sure after he has put in the hours he'll be making some super amazing films.
So my opinion on these shots: Josh: Some things that was already mentioned; Focus and Color correction. Those two are big ones that I noticed as well immediately. But something else I noticed, was that it was perhaps too much slowmotion throughout. I feel that mixing slowmotion with standard motion will provide a more interesting story. The positive: I felt that the boots on the glass was really good, especially if the product advertise as one pro of their product being safe or good for rough terrain. Jake: Here I felt that it was good, though I didn't like the oversaturation from the postediting. It could be that it was more or less a must due to camera choice to try and mask cheaper gear, but it felt too strong. Dial it down slightly would've been more natural looking, but still pop out. What I liked about the commercial was that it was more focused on the boots in almost every shot. I wish there would be a bit more story to it, or creativity, but nevertheless, it was my favourite of the two. For Josh that has only interned for 5 weeks, I feel that he will become really good really fast from all the challenges, feedback and such to improve with :)
Am I the only one that likes Josh's commercial better than Jakes? I like how the actor didn't end up back where he started, the colors were not oversaturated/overblown, and it felt more genuine to me.
Personally I really did like Josh's better I feel like he was selling the shoe better rather then just doing some fancy shots. like it was a good touch how he made him walk through the broken glass like saying these shoes look good but they're also rugged I feel like what did jake show that displayed why should i buy theses shoes.
he said he did really well, but hes only been doing it for 5 weeks so what do you really want him to say? he doesnt have much experience to give any feedback on himself.

experience is often the most important. I personally find that today it is useless to have to invest in so much equipment for a question of image, especially if it is dedicated to be on the internet ... with compression and the majority of users who does not look in perfect conditions. An advertisement shot on semi-pro equipment does a lot of work but again, it is above all the talent behind that and control that matters! 6k, 8k and even more is in my opinion absolutely useless, just requires more power, storage and continuous inducement to overconsumption while 1080p or 2k does the job very much.
Hey,I agree totally.Especially in these Days where a Sony A 7sIII comes to the Shops. I really wonder whe the First ones will be found used ,just because they won't do the Job by itselve ! KR OLLI
I loved the point of this video: "Stop worrying about your cameras/lenses/etc!!! Instead, get out their, shoot, edit, and THAT growing skill set is what will make beautiful art. The intern's close up shot of the slow mo boot moving past broken glass WAS the best single shot of this competition, so congrats on that! So, really what was the difference? 1. the pro got the idea, that in a commercial the potential customer wants to see the product from many different angles, with the product showcased in a pleasing manner. The pro made sure to highlight the shoe in almost every shot AND created a pleasing color tone to the shoe as well. The pro's error was not in getting enough close ups, stills/very slow movements, so that the customer can clearly see from all the angles the shoes. What's my take away from this last point? KNOW AHEAD OF TIME what the GOAL is of your shoot! What should the focus be for the particular video you are shooting. :).
Keep up Josh! You're in the right hands and already displaying the best attitude accepting feedback and using your creativity freely (the glasses on the ground was an epic idea). Embrace the suck and keep learning, you'll be the veteran very soon. 😎
Yall I don't even do cinematography but you can tell that it's not just about the editing , the focus in the first one was so bad , the second look way more clean and professional.
I like where Josh's was going concept -wise - with more training his subject focus and flow will be even better - I think his eye is going to create great content! Jake's color was great to see in contrast. 5 Weeks of training - what's that? 25-50 hours? Keep up the good work!

That's actually a really good video idea.

As someone who worked in one of Berlins best communication agencies:
Josh's:
- smooth artsy modern feel
- needs colour work
- focus could be too inconsistent
- has a great alternative vibe
Jake's:
- classic modern ad feel
- classic colouring
- frame composition on point
- misses an experimental uniqueness, still everything works perfect
Both did an excellent work, still both have a totally different vibe of storytelling, artsy experimental vs. classic ad
misses an experimental uniqueness,-- DISAGREE, too subjective to call. If those were my boots I would be happy--and that is what matters. Its not an art film-- its a commercial. And ppl vibe with what they are familiar with. Hence why Marvel always is the same.

But if it doesn't it's a huge misleading information that would fool the consumer.

there're always reasons they are the "pro" of their field, the hardware is just a tool mate and just as you said, it's the knowledge that make the difference

Yeah, it is also edited way smoother to the beat. Like the beat drop in the middle and then going by the glass actually looked so good. Jake's commercial just seemed boring and unoriginal. Not hating on him or something like that, but it just seems like that his commercial missed the creativity and ambition of a rookie. the thing is the camera will "see" colors differently than our eyes, color correction is meant to bring the colors closer to what a person see rather than the flat colors of the camera
@@BeetleBuns wrong, in advertising you always add colors, brighten it up, removes blemish and stuff, professionals do this because it is deemed more attractive to the eyes of many, the real world isn't really colorful and vibrant

in advertising there is no such thing as color correcting, everything gets bloomed up

Shut up

Even without the magic of post production I'd still prefer the second one if I were the client, just based on the fact that in every shot my product was in it, specially at that last bit. You want to sell the product not the model. But I guess it's something you learn through experience and Josh already has the talent and creativity, just needs a bit more polishing and experience and he'll be more awesome.
I agree
yes, you wrote it as it is, no sugar coting.
Josh focused on the model but jake focused on the shoes and that's made all the difference!!
By the way, 600$ camera is an expensive camera for a lot of us.
yeah they said entry level yet that is like my ultimate
Its not expensive if ur pursuing a professional career, not just for a hobby..
@@rns9644 Exactly. For us, a “reasonable” price is atleast a $1600 camera
@@cinezurdo Without lense, i hope?

I reckon Josh did super well putting a commmercial together and he definitely showed creative promise, I'm sure after he has put in the hours he'll be making some super amazing films.
So my opinion on these shots:
Josh: Some things that was already mentioned; Focus and Color correction.
You're certainly in the overwhelming minority.
I think josh was better. Same thoughts.
I would agree with you. But an executive in a sales environment would not
I like it much better
Personally I really did like Josh's better I feel like he was selling the shoe better rather then just doing some fancy shots. like it was a good touch how he made him walk through the broken glass like saying these shoes look good but they're also rugged I feel like what did jake show that displayed why should i buy theses shoes.
Josh can't talk by himself. I'd like to know his opinion too.
Right he barely said anything and they didn’t compliment the things he did really well. How do you not mention the walking over glass shot ?!
Ok👍
everything is scripted
Latrice Marie poor guy was prolly just shy
he said he did really well, but hes only been doing it for 5 weeks so what do you really want him to say? he doesnt have much experience to give any feedback on himself.
Josh's face when he got roasted by his own cousin is relateable
Pro teachers tell what you need to improve more. which is such a hurtful words. But will help you to overcome it.
Not a good teacher who's always giving you a sweet words. " You're good!" Then enough.
But you will never grow because you don't know what to change or what to improve more.
Love the comparison. It definitely shines the light on experience and learning to truly work with what you have.
Ah I love this. The gear is important, but much more important is how you use the gear and your knowledge as a filmmaker.
Love this content
It took the beginner a whole day just to process the red footage on premier pro 😂
Right !
You'd be surprised. The R3D codec is amazing, playback in premiere is better than most.
@@conorlunt Exactly. R3D is beautiful...way easier than working with one of the other manufacturers log files.
LMAOOO AHAHAHAHAHAHAAH
I have an old custom pc that barely runs Sony H.264 files. However when I edit RED 5k, 6k or 8k footage, it plays and renders better.
experience is often the most important. 6k, 8k and even more is in my opinion absolutely useless, just requires more power, storage and continuous inducement to overconsumption while 1080p or 2k does the job very much.
thanks for the valuable input
Salut steelorse
Hey,I agree totally.Especially in these Days where a Sony A 7sIII comes to the Shops.
I really wonder whe the First ones will be found used ,just because they won't do the Job by itselve !

@kiyonexus even zooming in on an image won't create the same effect as different focal length lenses.
@kiyonexus as someone who makes commercials for a living yes that's what I think.
The shot where the model walks over glass is dope!
Or just buy the most expensive camera :)
I think one of the benefits of a camera like a Red is not only the recording quality, but the possibilities that it gives you in post.
One of my favorite RUclips channel is Parker Walbeck... I always learn a new technique from each of his videos...
Keep up Josh! You're in the right hands and already displaying the best attitude accepting feedback and using your creativity freely (the glasses on the ground was an epic idea). Embrace the suck and keep learning, you'll be the veteran very soon. 😎

Even though the cinematography is better, the main reason behind the quality of second video is that, it is well edited.
No, the shots where a lot better framed and connected well from one to the next and you could see the product.
That’s the only reason
Yup it’s the edit
you don't do cinematography, it shows. josh's shots were ALL out of focus, out of frame, out of depth. you don't know what those terms mean.

Keep up the good work!

such great content for us filmmakers, proving that it's not the gear its the skills. i believe it is the same way with subscribers, it's not the amount of subscribers, its the quality of the content. thank you for inspiring small channels like myself to see that.
From the point of the broken glass shot to end of Josh’s video was imo better than anything in Jake’s video. If Josh is that good after 5 weeks, I’m seriously impressed.
I think Josh's shots were pretty decent, I just think his editing was a bit lacking. But for five weeks, damn
They were doing Josh dirty in this vid.
That’s not the point. They’re just critiquing him to make him better
