  • Claudio Sanchez, lead singer for Coheed and Cambria, does not fit the profile of a typical rock star. Certainly, he’s got the voluminous mane for the job, but in person he comes across as reserved bordering on anxious. A self-professed introvert, he overcomes the dissonance between his personality and his career by disappearing into another identity when he takes the stage. When he's offstage, he helps overcome his anxiety by streaming games like Fortnite and Call of Duty to Twitch.

I immediately had to look up the Tetris theme after his answer about the Welcome Home rift being partially inspired by it and I totally heard what he meant. Never knew that bit of trivia. Haha.

I totally get what he means about the feeling different on stage vs interaction, when I have done karaoke or did my graduation speech for HS, was in theatre back in school, speech and debate classes, stuff like that….I think it’s because it feels like I am talking at people rather than to them, it’s the lack of back and forth that takes the feeling of social pressure off. I can stick to a script and not have to worry about anything unexpected.
There’s something about being on a stage in front of people that feels far less nerve-racking as an extreme introvert with high social anxiety and ASD compared to just having a conversation, even 1 on 1.
I feel like so much of the pressure of introversion and social anxiety is in the back and forth of interaction, that is off the table when you are on a stage where everyone is an audience to your speech or performance.
It reminds me of how I hated taking part in improv, because it depended entirely on the very things I am weakest at and have the most anxiety around, compared to playing roles off a script, especially monologues…that was the easy part. That was all memorization, no need to worry about improvising or going off script when all there is to do is recite lines at a crowd with nobody else in the scene.
TL;DR: the stress of introversion and social anxiety comes from the back and forth. A stage where you just follow a script or talk at/sing at people takes that pressure off.

Way more interesting interview than I was expecting having no context going in. Surprised to hear that Vaxis II was going to have 'challenging songs' and that there was any doubt from the creators on its success. As a long time Coheed fan, I loved it from start to finish from pretty much the first listen, and only grew on me from there. Coheed has a way of creating songs that turn into serious ear worms that I can't get rid of, and this album may have been the worst offender.
