At first, i thought "Nah, this method wont work for a beginner like me" but then i drew some sketches with it and it actually feels pretty nice to use this method!
If you're a 90s kid you know how crazy it is these lessons are free. I bought Finch's figure drawing DVDs for $30 (I think) a piece back in 05. Information like this wasn't just floating around back then...
I really respect the fact that you, an artist who worked with DC, Image, Marvel, shouted out to Mikey... Most of the people I've seen on this platform, rarely "shares" the spotlight, give credit, etc... that's pretty cool.
That underwear hip shape gave me hell when trying to understand it. Thanks @MikeyMegaMega for the idea and David Finch for the demonstration. Made my life so much easier
My wife bought that bowl. It’s a 4 piece ceramic set (semi oval). We use it for mixing salads or mixing meat and veggies. Just brilliant! Thank you for sharing!!!
I work on The Harley Quinn show as a storyboard revisionist. This show being my first animated show that involves drawing women is challenging for me. Thank you, Dave! This video is So very helpful in regards to needing to speed up all the drawing I have to do for that show.
I WAS REWATCHING ALL YOUR PREVIOUS STREAM DAVID AND IT REALLY HELPED MY ART TO IMPROVE MORE, THANKS ALWAYS FOR YOUR AMAZING CONTENT, EVERYONE IN THIS COMMUNITY LOVES YOU❤️
I found this really helpful! I've been struggling a lot lately, hitting a plateau, tried a bunch of different videos but not making much progress. But I tried to quickly follow along with your examples, and actually felt like I got better with each one. By the time I did the last one, I was pretty happy with how it looked! Even gave her arms, with the left one doing a hitchhiker thumb down by her hip, right mostly tucked in front of the torso, and an outline of her head peeking over her left shoulder. The hardest part for me has always been visualizing a pose in my head. But I think I need to get better at basic anatomy and figure drawing before I can really focus on that. The "bowl" shape helped a lot as a starting point to build around. I've been absolutely confounded with how to construct all of those shapes around the hips. Thank you, I think I finally found an instructor that meshes well with my learning style, and the style of art I want to do.
Perfect technique!! I always had a problem with the standard methods because you have to draw forms right through other forms and I find that hard to do. But this is brilliant!!! Getting the bottom edge of that bowl shape places everything perfectly. It's one of those lines that once you discover it you wonder how you ever got along without it, and it gets everything shifted into position properly (at last). Must watch several times and then draw along, like with Bob Ross.
You and Mikey are my go-to for anatomy drawing.... i must admit i have to slow your videos down a bit, but they help a bunch. I use your method to draw hips much faster now
Yea that was my problem with weird dynamics poses of the legs, I always drew them as if they never had a butt, that’s why the poses look weird and I usually just leave the legs in a neutral upright position. Time to practice this
Wow! David thank you this has been an absolute game changer for me. This and your hands episode have made a massive difference in my drawing. I am applying this hips method to every photo I draw from and it works every time so far it’s like magic
At first it was too fast to suit me but boy am I glad I stuck around; soooo well done. I'm also glad you mentioned mike. He too, is an excellent artist and instructor. Glenn
That one detail about the leg cylinder hinge really opened my mind. I always used the anatomically accurate method, using the femur and the pelvis as the hinge, but always got confused of why my leg was always up so high in a "legs up" pose. This method (where the quads, sartorius and TFL approximately join) is a very simple and excellent way of displaying the external form of the figure without having to worry too much about underlying details. I guess I always over-thought things and ended up being stupid in the end. XD
I thought you were just making this look far too easy, but using this technique I can actually manage to draw a decent looking figure! Thank you! Looking forward to watching more of these amazing tutorials 🙏🏼😊💜
Great tutorial, Dave! The "bowl shape" concept really helped sink in how to anchor female hips. Took me a couple of viewings for it to sink in the bowl shape starts at the waist line. Now I've got some drawings of Wonder Woman throwing heavy objects to draw. :)
Ok, got it. Hip-bowl and butterfly-butt. 😆. For real though, I can feel my brain growing artistically whenever I watch your tutorials. And your examples you’re drawing while explaining things to us are simple, yet beautiful, and perfectly demonstrating your points! Thanks so much Dave!! 🙏 ✍️
Good Day, Mr.Finch I really wanted to know how to draw female hips because it is a bit difficult as they are 'S' shaped curves and when I draw them they do not turn out so well so thank you for the tutorial, Mr.Finch. I love your art and because of you I am now getting better and better at art Thanks a ton Waiting for the next tutorial
My first tutorial I ever watched on my journey to rediscover my drawing skills was mikeymegamega so the technique is familiar and after a few sketches I find that your styles are very complimentary. I hope you do more like this video and perhaps a live stream together. Its also great to see mikeymegamega getting noticed for being the great artists that he is.
Hi David, can you make a tutorial about the choice comics artists do about which size of panels use, horizontals, verticals and diagonals, in some of the actions or steady moments of the scripts? Thanks 🙏🏻
David, Could you do a similar tutorial with less perfect models -such as Kingpin or the Blob? Both male and female, young and old. I would greatly appreciate it.
...Wow! - I'm honoured that my stuff is even on your radar sir!!
😘
Should this even be a surprise at all? 🙃
I been hip to mikeymega for a grip this is dope Finch likes him as well
The 2 of you are literally my 2 fav youtube tutorial artists.
Eyy what's up

@@n00bi5h I'm currently working on season 3 and a season has been approved. That's all I can say. 🙂
Wow that's so cool dude! Nice to see people in the industry like you commenting on videos like these. I have so much respect for animated show staff!

Modern day comic illustrators need to watch this video. As should anyone that wants to be an animator.
David finch with another video 😳😳😳😳😳
came here via Visconde Carlo Vergara and I am now a big fan. thank you for these awesome videos!
Starting to seriously learn anatomy and the waist and hips have been the hardest yet! Thank you
The butterfly shape is very helpful . This is the first time I've drawn a good female figure 🙂

Really love these tutorials - they really help to show how artists think and draw using 3d volumes rather than 2d shapes.
Hmmmm very constructive new method. Good stuff from Mikey, guess even professionals can learn.

I like this bowl shape method. It really makes the perspective a lot easier to visualize than the underpants triangle shape

thank you again so much... your videos are so helpful!
Absolute gold!
My dude... just, thank you...
5:30 大腿和bowl的連接 bowl底面為恥骨平面,大腿有其壓縮極限所以畫成一的定量的圓很合理,又因此用大轉子也就是碗型的下邊緣來定義其邊界也很合理,畢竟不可能再更低了
This is a great tutorial!
