This video is all about drawing eyes, and placing them in the head at any angle. One of the toughest challenges facing cartoonists, and comic artists, is how to get the eyes to sit properly in the head at different angles, without having to resort to reference. We also go over the ways that eyes open and close, and the changes that happen when we look in different directions. That has a bigger impact than you may think!

Nobody ever focuses on emotions or expressions caused by the mouth. Smiling etc changes the eyes dramatically. The demonstration/lesson was very good. Thanks
That really is a good point...
Yeah but if you learn how to draw smiling eyes then the mouth makes more sense
true
@@NickGuy0320 yeah how the muscles all interact with each other
i got that in mind and it's incredible how expressions seem more natural
It’s really cool to see that even a seasoned artist who’s been drawing for decades doesn’t always get the proportions right on the first time
This dude is so badass. I still watch and re-watch his perspective video. The one where you place different characters on different planes and such. Great teacher. Very glad for his success.
Yeah it’s insane how intuitive it all is for him at this point since he is so skilled
Well this was an eye opener! Lol! I never tried drawing them this way! I will now! Thanx David for breaking it down!!💪🔥
Thanks Mighty!
I agree!
It’s so hard to find someone you can feel yourself listening to easier than the rest. You keep it simple and demonstrate in a way that I can understand better, thank you
So I just realized I can’t draw a sphere so I’m back to the fundamentals
You're the sole reason why I am improving in art, well definitely there are other artists has well but after watching your tutorials my anatomy has greatly improved. I was a fan of your artwork even without knowing it was done by you, i still have that Superman poster which I got from comics. Thanks a lot.
Can't think of a better way to do this lecture. Thank you. We are so incredibly lucky to have an artist like you teach us. Incredible.
it’s amazing that you’d give this knowledge and expertise free to the world. Thanks.
My pleasure!
David never leaves The Flock wanting for content. Whataguy.
Aye, it’s great that your doing another one of these kinds of videos again. I could use a lecture on how to draw eyes since I don’t really think much about the eyes other than to make them look good enough
theflaminfgamer... lets connected,, I love drawing,,,,
These videos have made me a much better artist, thanks for making these it’s a huge help.
Happy to hear that!
you make it seem so easy. I can understand and draw the eye as a sphere in the beginning, but constructing the head like that, placing the features, its very difficult for some reason
The only video ever to explain smth clear to my level
This was really helpful! I don't know why I've never thought to use crosshairs on the eyeballs for pupil placement
They really do help establish the form of the sphere, for sure
After watching tons of videos on how to draw eyes, I finally found one that makes a lot of sense. Very well explained! Thank you so much!!! :)
halo roxana danulescu... lets connected, I Love drawing,,
This method works the best for me. I really struggled finding actual eye tutorials that dont just say ''then add the detail'' . Lots of kisses!!!
Videos like this need the ability to hit the thumbs up more than once.
Wonderful tutorial Dave. Thanks for everything you do!
Sooo I always struggled with drawing eyes. But after watching this video and applying the technique, it became better. I had more proper proportions. I am sooo happy
This video is a dream come true
Brilliantly explained as usual. Thanks David you are my favourite comic illustrator for the last 15 years I have been following your art. Thank you for all your help. 👍🏽
Ive watched millions of tutatorial and finally I solved the problem of drawing eyes, my problem wasn't actually about the eyes, but the structure of the head and where to place it, probably because we're both left handed😊
This video was incredible. I came here to learn how to draw eyes, left with that and more. Beautifully taught man! 👏
I never really read any comics or wanted to draw them but davids tutorials are so good and in depth looks like this is the path ill take after all
I have no words to say how much is therapeutical, brother. Incredible !
It's really very interesting and I will have to remember and try it sometimes. Even through I am used to draw eyes in completly different shape, it never hurts to be able to do things differently and understand them better.
Thank you, Mr. Finch
And so many of the same rules still apply!
Thank you so much for putting this precious knowledge out there for free with your easy-to-understand explanations and instructive drawings. You're the best!
I find the step by step approach so helpful, thank you mr.finch!
Your videos are a mine of golds, thank you for doing this for free, i've learned a lot !
"Thing of it as a 3D Sphere
By using this method here"
BARS 🔥🔥🔥
I applaud you for describing your process from a logical standpoint (e.g. the eyeball sits in a skull, therefore the socket is the basis, therefore the eyebrow follows along its upper rim). A lot of art instructors on RUclips struggle tremendously with conveying their information in a way that's feasible to somebody who just doesn't get it. Even understanding the structure of an eye, I've still tremendously struggled with grasping _why_ it's laid out the way it is, and you've helped me alleviate some of these headscratchers. I think Andrew Loomis put this best when he compared constructing a figure/face to a carpenter measuring a board before cutting it; you just have to do it every time, if you want to get it right.
Seriously, the best feeling an artist can have while studying is, "how could've I not figured this out on my own?" and I find myself thinking that all the time while watching your videos. Cheers.
I feel like these videos make me improve then I watch them again and I find something else to help me improve
Cheers for the vid
Great vídeo,i remenber that someone asked it on a streaming, cool as always, greetings from Perú 🇵🇪
fantastic video, genuinely learned so much by going through every step and understanding the concepts . I hope i can apply these ideas soon to some practice drawings
That was amazing in the beginning I don't give any attention on drawing eyes but now I can draw them exactly then a cartoon eye
Thanks to the guy who likes it
You make it look so easy... I have a loooong way to go! But thank you so much for teaching, it already is starting to look like human beings.. Much love! 🤗❤
Thank you I needed this tutorial, I've learned so much. Just need to practise more so that I can visualize the proper space and draw better lines
Thanks for the video! This helped me soooo much and I can already tell a difference i how I draw eyes! Thanks a lot, Dave!
At first i got mad and really frustrated because i thought that this was for beginners or something like that, but i couldn't get anything correct or in my mind, now (4 or 5 months later) i can REALLY understand all of it. This helped a lot, thanks man :'3
Thanks a lot for another amazing lesson 🙏🏻🙏🏻I have learnt a lot by just watching your videos. Such an inspiration 😊
This is exactly what I needed! Thanks Dave!!
Really this video helped me to draw the eyes because that was the part that I always had problems or it was difficult for me, thank you Mr. Finch! A great Master!
This is so helpful! Thank you! The point on the indentation from the brow line to the start of the nose and also before the cheek bone make everything easier to understand! And thanks for explaining the bulging shape of the iris and its effect on how the eye looks at certain angles-it will help me so much as the eyes and nose are the most protruding parts of the face, thus needing as much detail and correct proportions as possible.
Maybe not both protruding, but definitely the parts that need fine details.
This is one of the best tutorial podcasts. Thanks
David, thanks for making these videos!
I am so happy to find this!! I love eyes but have lacked the knowledge to fuel my love until now
Another great video David! 🤘🏻
Drawing the other eye has always been the most challenging part for me. Thank you for this tutorial
Best eye tutorial on RUclips.. Hats off to you.... Thank you very very much....
This helped me a lot. I've watched a lot of videos, read a lot of books, took art classes, etc. but this video has had a drastic change on how I draw faces. I just drew a guy face for the first time without a reference that actually looks like a dude and it's my favorite thing I've drawn in years. Next step is learning how to draw expressions better. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, sir. It was very helpful! 💕 You're amazing
Thanks for the Video ☺️👌🏻👍🏻
Taking in consideration the iri's bump its a game changer, I never knew why sometimes my eyes felt off, thank you so much
Very good job on this one! Also Jury is getting noticeable better at editing! Well done you two!
Thanks Dr. Rocke! Yeah, I'm playing more with after effects features. But c'mon man my name is so easy to spell!! 😂😂😂😂

I just discovered the channel and this video has been very helpful and informative. Thank you!
This man is one of the best teachers online
Def keep watching him
Top Pro. I have had several of your tutorial many years, but I need to get my hand back from 3D CG before I could touch them. Moreover, I needed info on how the eye was seated and the correlation to the eye socket and relation to the skull. Exactly what I needed David thanks for a full study.
Idk if you'll read this but this is the best eye tutorial I've seen on RUclips. I learned so much from this 😭
great tutorial mr finch
Another great video Dave!! your drawings are so lovely!

Thanks to you, the way I draw eyes are slightly better than before.
It's so great and informative video for artists. Thank you!
Wow, I almost forgot this is RUclips, felt so much like a real classroom tutorial. Great job as always boss, well assimilated 👍👊
Now I realize how good I am at this 'cause I've always done this stuff without any drawing class but even though, this video has been very useful. 👏
Thanks to the teacher for your guidance, I learned a lot. I no longer draw aimlessly like before.
I love your tutorials : )
Thanks you from France
This video was so helpful thank you!❣️🙏
Thank you very much for this!
Very helpful content!
I can only give you one thump up, but you deserve way more. Thank you so much for this
I found the part about the way the eyelid shape shifts with the movement of the eye very helpful! I'd like to understand better how the eye reflection works and how to place them.
very helpful video sir!! thanks a lot
watching this made me realize how much i don't know about eyes. as always. amazing video
Merci! I appreciate all the detail :)
Thank you for this video. Very well done and extremely informative. Thanks again. Rita
Most helpful art channel of all time. Thank you :)
Thank you so much 😀
Your videos are a blessing thank you very much it helps me a lot !
Woah so much knowledge! After the first 5 minute I was like "Ok so we know how to draw the eye from all angles, what's left to do?"
Actually a lot is left: learning about eye sockets, eyebrows, how to draw in a practical manner, how eyelids move, etc.
8:43 Now I suspect that is an actually skull.
Dude, thank you so much, now I know how to draw eyes and heads!!
